Adam Wainwright will not throw another pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Oliver Marmol told reporters (including John Denton of MLB.com). His season is officially over, and with that, so ends his phenomenal career.
Cardinals fans were holding out hope that the 18-year veteran might make one more start at Busch Stadium, but the pain he has been dealing with in his back and shoulder has simply become too much to bear. He twirled a gem in his last outing, tossing seven scoreless against the Brewers to earn his 200th career victory. As his manager explained, the 42-year-old used “every ounce of what was left in that arm” that evening. Indeed, it was far and away his best performance of the year; he had not thrown seven innings in a start or made a scoreless appearance since August 2022. In what has largely been a disappointing season, Wainwright mustered the strength of his former self one last time.
While Wainwright will not pitch again, Marmol kept the door open for the possibility of a pinch-hit plate appearance. Before the designated hitter came to the National League, the 6-foot-7 righty was one of the better hitting pitchers in the game. He hit ten home runs in his career, including two in 2017, when he won the Silver Slugger. If he does not take another at-bat, he will finish with a .194/.222/.294 slash line, perfectly respectable numbers for a man who made his living on the mound.
As Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, Wainwright will only step to the plate against the Reds during the final series of the season if Cincinnati has either clinched a postseason berth or already been eliminated from contention. Marmol will not give up an opportunity to play spoiler against a division rival. As enjoyable as it would be to see Wainwright take one last at-bat, that’s no reason not to play competitive baseball.
Any potential pinch-hitting appearance aside, this marks the end of a wonderful career for the Cardinals legend. In 478 games, Wainwright pitched to a 3.53 ERA, earning Cy Young votes in five separate seasons. He is a three-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove winner, and a World Series champion. Perhaps most impressive of all, he spent his entire career with a single franchise, an increasingly rare occurrence in this day and age. He ranks second all-time among Cardinals pitchers in strikeouts and third in wins.

Hats off to Waino on an outstanding career!

Some sportswriter looking for click bait had a headline that he “Might be the last of the 200 game winners.” Really? Nobody will ever be able to average 14 wins over 15 seasons again? Or 15 over 14? Or whatever combo you want. Ever again? Just a stupid thing to write.
Deadguy
Who’s gonna average 12-15 wins a season then? Degrom? Gilbert? Alcantara? Gallen? Half these guys are too old already to make it to 150 by 36?
The sports writer was accurate? Sorry you misinterpreted the league?
Have a career Adam Wainwright! I see you making the hall on your 9th go around? If not by committee for sure? Especially by the time it comes around? There will be Kershaw and Bumgartner from this era only ahead of Wainwright? Is it only the best gets in? Ted Simmons sat on or behind the Bench for long enough, and now he’s in?
mlb1225
I think Strider has one of the best chances. He could win 20 games this year, is only 24, and will be part of the same core for nearly the rest of the deacade. Could see a lot more 18-20 win seasons from him if he stays healthy, as well as the likes of Acuna, Albies, Riley Olson, Murphy, and Harris.
PutPeteinthehall
Eventually he’s in. Borderline or no line doesn’t matter. He will be in. The good citizen/soldier aspect pushes him over. Remember these are people voting from their perspective. It’s not all numbers or a threshold decision.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I think a soft tosser like Charlie Hough has the best chance to win 200. Strider is amazing but the human arm is not designed to do things like that.
BPax
Wow Hippy, you are sharp!. It will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. EVER. NOT POSSIBLE. Have another bong hit.
Paleobros
That’s a lot of question marks you used?
Deadguy
Bpax…. read the last comment? Then talk to me about the bong? Hey uhhh didn’t that dude Chris Farley like burn down a car made with bong resin on your desk? Oh that wasn’t Chris Farely… my bad I must be high
Oh yeah the high part is sarcasm cause drugs killed my whole family? Hey why don’t you go shoot up some herion for me? I’d feel alot better about MY LIFE?
Wow the internet folks, full of itself 24/7 365…. worse than that bubble headed bleach blonde that guy from the Eagles sings about? What was his name again km kinda high? Walsh? Yeah… Don Walsh that was it…
MacGromit
@Manny
It’s possible we see another 200 game winner but I completely agree with you, @Manny that the human arm isn’t meant to throw like that long term and with the way starters are used these days — it’s not necessarily that no one *could* do it, but no one will be *allowed* to either by the coaching staff/FO or their own health.
Can you imagine what it would take in miracle surgery advancement for someone to match HOF, Jim Palmer’s 211 complete games for instance?
It’s possible, just less likely given the current game and business strategy.
Regardless, amazing career Waino. Hope you get a plate appearance and hit.
Idosteroids
Young pitchers on the braves and O’s have a good head start. Those teams will be 90+ game winners for the next 5-7 years easily.
Dock_Elvis
Yup…it’ll take a Maddux style. Ability to limit pitch count while also dominate the offense without all the K’s usually associated with dominance.
Dock_Elvis
Idosteroids. The difference between an 80 and 90 win team isn’t much as far as win opportunities for a five man starting rotation. That adds a possible 2 more wins per pitcher by appearance. IF they actually managed to pick up those two wins a season..you’re what?…adding 14 career wins if they each won those extra games over 7 seasons?
Datashark
Bumgartner would deserve it before Wainwright
they were pretty similar
differentbears
Wainwright for the Hall of Very Good. More deserving than Bumgarner, which doesn’t mean anything since they’re both short of being Cooperstown-worthy.
The Big Yo
Sensational career and what away to go. Good decision not throwing again, not much point and went out like the champ he is
Deadguy
No one called me on it?
Damn…
Gerrit Cole will be the last 200 game winner, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer were both also clearly better and more deserving of the hall? But do writers vote psychopaths like Scherzer in? If his post career is anything like Schillings, Wainwright will be voted in over Scherzer?
Funny I have to think like this when considering who was the best while PLAYING THE GAME? But oh well? At least we’re remembering how good they were on the field? Hey wait a second? Can we change it’s name to the “Hall of Morally Good Fame?” I know sounds like nails on a chalkboard? At least were remembering Barry Bonds was a 100 WAR player before his balanced breakfast picked him up 62 more from age 36-retirement? At least we got that right? Disgrace….
makaio6
Why do you end every sentence with a question mark?
rocknwell
I was going to ask the same question.
GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
I think he’ll get into the Hall eventually. More likely it’ll be through the veteran’s committee rather than the writers.
Viveleempireevil
No. He’s had a very good career. But he falls short in a number areas.

Wainwright gets in for being a golden boy… that alone? Why else didn’t Schilling get in? What about Bonds? Alex Rodriguez? Manny Ramirez? (David Ortiz is LMAO at you bro?)
If Max Scherzer with his psychopathic self is anything like Schilling, Wainwright takes his spot… hands down…
Deadguy
How is Trevor Ploufee gonna sit there and say “Ortiz got in cause of his playoff numbers alone?” Really cause Manny Ramirez posted almost IDENTICAL numbers? If not better? (David Ortiz trolling you Hella hard with that Mitchell report in hand MANNY)
Deadguy
Wainwright Career is very similar to Kevin Browns? Who didn’t get in? But if Kevin Brown pitched today he would have won multiple Cy Youngs similar to Corey Kluber? But with more longevity? I think Adam Wainwright hall case depends alot on what happens from here till then? With the Modern day pitcher? Degrom is likely to have a injury plagued back half of his career much like Dizzy Dean? But I got this strange feeling his was historically good and will make the hall regardless?

Let him just be an opener on Sunday for a couple batters and let him go out to an ovation
Jake1972
Or pitch one pitch in the last inning so he can just have that send off he deserves.
Rick Wilkins
Did you see the part about the pain he is in? He literally left it all out there the other night guys. He doesn’t need to throw another pitch. 200 wins. 2200 Ks. Ring. Dude is getting his numbered retired. Free drinks for life in the Lou.
knolln
Yes, first inning. Come out for the second. And I hate the cardinal way. Honestly I’d rather see Adam do it than the other guys. Even if it takes an 8 era to do so. Lol. I like the guy, sorry bout it
Deadguy
No drinks… Alcohol is bad mmmmmkay? Didn’t you attend DARE?

Obviously its a matter of opinion but if I were him i would prefer to ensure i go out on a high note and not mess with my body and health any more. And if I were a cards fan I’d rather see him on the mound for a last time in an away game on TV throwing a vintage gem and hitting a milestone rather than running the risk of him getting rocked in his last start or walking off injured.

Congrats on a great career and knowing when to call it quits.

Quits should have been two years ago.

You’d be out of your mind to turn down an 18 million dollar contract after a season with a 3 era. Just a bad take, per usual
Slider_withcheese
You’d be out of your mind to have five kids you need to feed, a wife who loves her Amex card and having a fantasy football addiction like Mr Wainwright does. No wonder he had to go out there tossing 70 mph pitches while ruining his already sub-par stats.

You must have been talking to me when you said quits was two years ago?
But God had other plans? And who are you to argue?

cdouglas24000
Waino…what a career. Yes, 2023 was a rough go around but he all in all, u can look at it and say that was a damn fine starting pitcher. I remember when he came up and made carlos Beltran look absolutely foolish on that knuckle curve. He will always have a special place in the hearts of cardinal fans everywhere. I’m all for him pitching 1 inning for very last game of season. We appreciate u Waino!!
njbirdsfan
A true legend passes away, but sure, let’s make it all about you. As usual.

Wainwright literally willed every ounce of strength left in his body in his last outing for his 200th win. Dude went out like a beast for what will be a heck of a career, hats off to him!
Texas Outlaw
Vet committee will put him in the Hall of Pretty Dang Good one-day.

I hope so, I’m not a Cardinals fan but he had a lot of good games against the Cubs over his career. I can appreciate a great pitcher as a fan of baseball.
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Could be the last year we see Miggy, Waino, and Kersh. Lucky to have seen these guys play.
Hemlock
Zack Greinke and Joey Votto, too
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Definitely. Guys like Scherzer and Verlander won’t be long after them either.
Pageup
Where’s Kersh going? 13-4, 2.42 ERA, 1.053 WHIP. 9.4 SOs per nine. 180 ERA+.
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Probably to wherever his velocity went. I’m not saying he’s retiring, only that it’s possible. Not every player enjoys spending their life getting hurt. Eventually Kershaw will reach that point
Ted
Whether there’s any truth or not, there’s a lot of “chatter” among baseball analysts about Kershaw retiring soon.
Jerry Hairston Jr's Toupee
Yeah, Kersh was playing with his kids around the mound and taking group photos with the fam after Sunday’s game. Like it was his last regular season home game….
Rick Wilkins
From a lifelong diehard Cubs fan, major hat tip to a true class act. I hated his uniform, but he was definitely one of the players that you really couldn’t dislike. Great dude. Great pitcher. Well done.
websoulsurfer
So glad he got his 200th. It was such a pleasure to be able to be there in St Louis earlier this month and see him get that win in person.
Now he can ride off into retirement knowing he has that milestone under his belt.
Hemlock
Based on how difficult this year was for him, it was a great end to his career. You are fortunate to have seen it.
StupendousYappi
I figured he would come back for one more year. I would not want to end on a season like this. He was not very strong at all not trying to take nothing away from him I was just hoping for better.
njbirdsfan
He should have walked away last year, but you know, he HAD to have his 200, regardless if it took his team to the basement.
showmebb
Excellent pitcher and a better human being. See you around Adam.
mets4ever
As a Mets fan I very painfully remember 2006. However, I want to tip my cap to a fine pitcher, top notch competitor, and all around good human being on a great career. He had a tough season but that final start was vintage Waino and is the perfect way to go out. Congratulations, Adam, on a very fine career and best wishes for your future.
Noah H.
Listening to the interview he did with Kyle McClellan last week it sounded like really wanted to pitch at least more game this season. Someone must have talked him out of it. Probably for the best based on the way he described the pain from his last outing. I’ll be rooting against the Reds even more this week in hopes that he gets that bat.
Kenneth Powers
-2.1 WAR this season. Cardinals should have cut bait on this guy in June or July. Very nice career. Incredibly horrible last season.

Exactly who would have replaced him? The starters behind him were just as bad.
njbirdsfan
Literally anyone in AAA.
CardsFan57
None of them that were ready for promotion have been any better.

One of my favorite Cardinals ever. Classy, ultra competitive, great role model for up & coming players. Congratulations, Waino! Enjoy your retirement!

So sad to see the last of the World Series winning crew retire. That said, way to walk away on a high with that last performance and 200th win Adam.
What a great career, I’m happy he hit the Milestone, and wish him the best in his life. Hopefully part of the future includes teaching kids that nasty hook of his.
insidethepark9
Article made it sound like he only won One World Series but he was on the team for both 2006 and 2011.
gbs42
He missed the entire 2011 season.
MacGromit
@nj
Waino took the Cardinals to the basement by himself?
Playing replacement level baseball took the Cardinals to the basement this season. Gerritt Cole can’t win the Yankees into the postseason by himself and Adam Wainwright can’t lose the team into the cellar.
Fans and writers are the ones obsessed with round numbers. Wainwright was a class act and deserves better than your sorry take.
I’d like to see you walk from millions of dollars after a sacrificing your body, a long big league career of success and after years of riding buses from minor league park to minor league park for peanuts. Holy smokes what a crock of a comment.
On the complete opposite side of things, I’m so glad for @RoyDeMeo’s and @rememberthecoop’s comments and solid baseball fan takes. Hate the rival’s colors but respect a strong competitor and tip you hat when they play hard and do the game justice. As much as I get disgusted by some opinions here, I’m so encouraged by fans of the game with level headed takes. Good reminders for me as well.
rememberthecoop
Cubs fan here. I hate the Cardinals, but I respect Adam Wainright. Congrats on a terrific career.
baseballteam
Wainright: willing to lay an egg several games in a row, meaning team losses to vet his 200. But once he got his number, vanishing act. People, this is all about players out for themselves. They don’t care about the fans. Don’t attribute great moral value because a player retires.
bhambrave
St Louis was eliminated a while back. Why shouldn’t they celebrate the career of a great pitcher?

Of course the Cardinals would celebrate, they are a business.

Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
It’s not often the Braves trade away a young pitcher and later regret it. Such was the case when, twenty years ago, the Braves traded Wainwright to the Cardinals essentially for JD Drew.
Drew never became the star many predicted while bouncing from team to team. Wainwright is at least a borderline HOFer.
I say, borderline, because some voters remain fixated on a pitcher’s Win total even when modern analytics have discounted that stat in favor of Quality Starts, WHIP and WAR.
Here’s wishing a true professional, a professional with a capital “P”, all the best while extending a hardy “Thank You” for some great memories.
I.M. Insane
“Phenomenal career”? Yeesh. 200 wins. 2,202 strikeouts and a whopping 28 complete games is a good career. Nothing more. This generation is really lowering the pedestal.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Just playing on the same team your entire career is impressive these days. This was one of the worst trade the Braves made that I can remember in the last 20 years. Congrats to Wainwright on a nice career though!
Fred McGriff HR
Quite some time back someone on here tried to tell me that Adam Wainwright was not a Cardinal legend, you can see by some of the comments above that there are those that still echo the same opinions.
Chris from NJ
I’m really happy he got to 200 but boy did he ever limp to get there. He had no business being on a roster this year. But in his day he was one the best. Not hof but Hall of very good. Rick Reuschel type stats. I’ll never forget that hammer he threw Beltran in game 7 in 2006. Still have nightmares!! Ahhhh
