The White Sox have placed started Mike Clevinger on waivers, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This is one of several moves today as players with notable salaries are being placed on waivers by clubs out of contention, trying to dump some salary by having a contending club put in a claim.
Clevinger, 32, is playing the season on a one-year, $12MM contract, though the structure of the deal leaves a decent chunk yet to be paid out. The veteran righty is earning an $8MM salary, with about $1.42MM of that yet to be paid out, but is also owed a $4MM buyout on a $12MM mutual option for the 2024 campaign. As such, there’s about $5.42MM in total guarantees remaining for any club that places a claim.
Steep as that price may be for a month of work (and potentially more during the playoffs), Clevinger would be an upgrade to the pitching staff of most contending clubs. He’s made 18 starts for the White Sox this season, tallying 97 2/3 innings of 3.32 ERA ball along the way. Clevinger’s 20.8% strikeout rate is down nearly seven percentage points from its peak, and he’s walked 9.3% of his opponents this year — right in line with his career mark.
Clevinger missed about six weeks of the summer due to inflammation in his right biceps but has done his best work of the season since being activated. In six post-IL starts, the right-hander has notched a 2.31 earned run average and 3.39 FIP while fanning opponents at a 23.7% clip against an 8.3% walk rate. Clevinger’s most recent outing saw him punch out 10 A’s hitters across seven one-run frames, and he also blanked the Cubs while posting seven strikeouts over seven innings back on Aug. 16.
The White Sox didn’t move Clevinger as part of their deadline sell-off, presumably because he only returned from the injured list just three days before the deadline itself. Given the injury uncertainty, a less-impressive pre-IL performance and the amount of money remaining on his contract, other teams were surely wary of giving up much of anything to acquire him in a trade. Today’s placement on waivers gives the South Siders the opportunity to at least shed some of the money he’s owed.
If Clevinger goes unclaimed, the Sox could still let him go in order to try to latch on with a contender between the expiration of his waiver period and the Aug. 31, 11:59pm ET deadline for postseason eligibility. In that scenario, the new team would only owe him the prorated league minimum, which would be subtracted from the Sox’ obligation to Clevinger.
Clevinger is essentially a rental player — mutual options are almost never exercised by both parties — and he’ll now be made available to all 29 other clubs, in order of reverse standings. Unlike the now-defunct revocable August trade waivers, outright waivers are not league-specific. (MLBTR has confirmed this with league sources on multiple occasions.) Waiver priority on Clevinger and all other veteran players who were waived today will be based on a worst-to-first basis, beginning with the A’s and ending with the Braves.

How come he didn’t get traded? Did those allegations make him a non desirable? I need perspective on this I’m seriously curious. Hopefully the article will cover it.

Cuz he sucks and also got Metoo’d

He has a 134+ ERA this season. This is LOWER than 6 out of the last 7 years he has pitched. You can say a lot of things about the guy, but him sucking at baseball is not one of them.

He was on the IL most of June and nearly all of July.

I know this sounds crazy, but the article says why he didn’t get traded.

@paleo Yeah now it does. When I made the comment it was a developing story. That’s why I said hopefully the article will cover it. Still up for debate.

The integrity of the game was officially killed today.

Postseason roster deadline is in two days. This is the last chance to add a player that would be eligible in the postseason. Just enough time for the waiver period to end. Teams are hoping a contender will take a contract off their hands.
Tigers3232
Hiflew, yes this does kind of tarnish the integrity. But in the case of the Angels it was a wise tactic to avoid and reset luxury tax for a team not afraid to spend. As for the White Sox, this move is just pathetic. Reinsdorf is pitching pennies while potentially having an impact on playoff races and possibly even playoff series(s).
Dogbone

Giants could pick him up
Spotswood
Probably won’t be around by the time the Giants get to pick. As mentioned by someone in the Angels thread, the White Sox are in the AL, so all the AL teams get first crack with worst record getting first right to claim. Then the NL teams get to pick.
fre5hwind
Yeah, if he is still available I think it’s a possibility
showmebb
That’s not the case anymore. Waiver claims are based on record for all teams. I believe the league the team is in only matters if 2 teams with equal records make a claim-the league becomes the tiebreaker.
Spotswood
It’s still a thing:
“When a player is on waivers, other teams can submit a claim. If more than one team does, those in the same league as that player’s team get first priority, starting with the club with the worst record on the day of the claim. Then, the priority moves to the other league, starting with the worst record.”

@Spotswood nice 6 year old article. Not the case anymore.
Steve Adams
It’s not for outright waivers. It never was. I’ve personally confirmed this with team and league sources multiple times in the past. Revocable August trade waivers and outright waivers are not the same thing. League-specific priority only ever pertained to revocable August trade waivers.
It’s reverse standings, regardless of league.

Further proof that there are no longer two separate leagues.

Just a note that per mlb.com, this is no longer true. League doesnt matter – just record.
Spotswood
Just pulled that from MLB.com… not sure where the confusion is…
This is the entire section. Link above:

If more than one team does, those in the same league as that player’s team get first priority, starting with the club with the worst record on the day of the claim. Then, the priority moves to the other league, starting with the worst record. For example, if a National League team puts a player on waivers, the NL team with the worst record gets the first shot at him, and the last-place American League club would be right behind the top NL club.
Cmurphy
Spotswood: That’s the old system when they had revokable waivers. It changed after 2019. The link was from 2017.

Fre5hwind and mils100- you were right on that, it has been changed.

Giants won’t mess with his reputation off the field I think the fans here wouldn’t dig it too much but hey it’s the Farhan era and I’m sure he has a spreadsheet somewhere that says he’s worth +16.8 NZOIPFS or something.
tgallagher
He has been their best pitcher. He can help a contender.

That leaves the Sox with three starters: Cease, punching-bag Kopech, and minor leaguer Scholtens. I’m sure they’ll bring up a couple of the prized dfa’s that are clogging up their farm system. Good thing it doesn’t really matter.

kenny84
He wouldn’t be eligible for the playoffs but might be worth it to have an experienced guy eat some innings to rest the regulars. He’d still get a ring if he signed with the world series winner even if he isn’t in the post season so he’d have motivation.
Simm
He will be eligible if they pick him up by Thursday which is when he will be available
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Braves, are you busy on Thursday?

Someone will be desperate enough to bite on this one. If the Reds don’t sign at least one of these castaways in the next 24 hours they don’t deserve a wildcard spot.
Cincyfan85
Agree 150%
avenger65
Unfortunately, the Reds are fading. However, the Dbacks seemed out of it when they lost ten in a row, but they have pulled themselves out of it. The Reds are a young team, but they still have time to turn things around. Clevinger has pitched well lately. He’ll go seven strong innings, leave the game with the lead, then watch the BP blow it. The Reds have to have better relief pitchers who can hold onto leads.
This one belongs to the Reds
Unfortunately pribably too late. Their GM could be sued for non support and malpractice at this point.

He’s been one of the best pitchers the second half of the season. This is a joke. Trade deadline needs to be the roster freeze
Spotswood
Yeah, this needs to be fixed in the offseason.
Edp007
Difficult because it’s not trading , on waivers for purpose of release , guys can be waived anytime during a season as long as they get paid.
Deleted Userr
Probably none of these guys get released if unclaimed.
Edp007
Yes probably right
riffraff
ED – I think its a very easy fix..any player released after the trade deadline will still be paid in full by the team releasing him. Eliminates releasing players just in the off chance someone else claims the rest of his salary.
johnrealtime
Why does it need to change? It’s been like this longer than you’ve been alive and it adds a fun element to August baseball. Very rare that a true impact player goes through waivers and gets picked up
Tigers3232
This is now the 2nd team to waive players who are true impact players tho. With the Angels, it was actually a wise move strategically. If most of those players are claimed they ll fall under luxury tax threshold and reset the penalty.
As for the White Sox, they are no where near luxury tax threshold. This is just Reinsdorf saving a few dollars.
Some % of every $ saved for any player who ends up on a playoff roster should be subtracted from teams revenue sharing $’s. These moves can have a profound impact on playoff races, which is pretty sad. In the Angels case, I absolutely get it. But what Reinsdorf has done is just cheap and petty and this move likely tipped the scales. I’d say it’s a near certainty that they ll b rule changes addressing this before next season.
Cincyfan85
So a team would have to pay the rest of his salary this year ($1.3-1.4M by my math), but he also has a 2024 mutual option with a $4m buyout. So I believe he would actually cost the new team about $5.3-5.4m, right?
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
Great point… I didn’t realize that.
Spotswood
You are correct if the #s are right
Deleted Userr
Correct
This one belongs to the Reds
With an 83 million payroll, I know someone that could easily afford him and a couple others.
CKinSTL
I believe that 2024 option is mutual. So if the team declines and Clevinger accepts, the club owes him $4 million for 2024.
If Clevinger ends up being grabbed by a contender and pitches well down the stretch.. It wouldn’t be surprised at all if his option got picked up.
Trotski
Here’s a question, what happens if the club picks up the option, but Clevinger declines? Does he owe the club $4MM? (I doubt this is true but it should be). You shouldn’t be able to turn down your half of the mutual option and the ballclub still owes you the buy-out,….. right?
CKinSTL
Trotski- the mutual option for Clevinger was referenced in another MLBTR article.. I guess if either side declines the option, Clevinger gets the $4 million buyout. If both sides pick up the option, he gets a $12 million salary.
I initially thought if the player declined the option, they would not receive the buyout.. but u guess that isn’t the case.
Deleted Userr
Nope. If the option isn’t picked up the White Sox owe Clevinger $4m, regardless of who declines it.

Good discussion, agree that it is a salary dump only. he did not deserve this. Gives the WS a black eye for signing good players next year. Wonder if the previous front office would have done this.
cpdpoet
Did not deserve this?
Disagree 110%, the man is still getting ALL his money. Player movement is part of the game and he gets a chance to pitch for a contender. The game retired me in college, but if it was me, I would be ok with this happening….
nsmith12641
Maybe I just don’t understand the rule, but I thought if players were put on outright waivers they were removed from the 40 man roster immediately. But I see Renfroe and Grichuk are playing for the Angels right now. How is that possible? And I would have to assume all these players would reach free agency as they would reject the minors assignment.
kma
They haven’t been released, outrighted, or claimed yet. If they’re claimed, then they will move to new team.
mohoney
You’re confusing being place on outright waivers with being designated for assignment. Being designated for assignment removes a player from the roster, but being waived does not remove the player unless another team claims him.
Jack Buckley
Clevinger has 3 kids by 3 different Moms, Tim Anderson was in the delivery room for his newest child, his wife wasn’t there, could they be more unlikable
IronBallsMcGinty
Not as unlikable as your post.
There will always be a stigma attached to Clevinger. The league, among all it’s faults seem to take domestic violence seriously. Clevinger cooperated with police and MLB and their investigations apparently found nothing. Maybe he did what was reported, maybe he didn’t. It’s not up to us decide and also, why should anyone care how many baby mamas he has? If he was proven guilty, that’d be one thing but he wasn’t so all that interests me is his performance on the field. Any players personal life is none of my business. Unless they’re very open, I’m in no place to criticize. He hasn’t conducted himself as an a-hole, at least not with the Sox but what he has done is pitched decently this season and should provide at least a little value to another team who’s actually contending

Jaysfan1981
This has been happening for a long time.
2 memorable ones as a Jays fan.
Whitesox picked up Alex Rios and his multiple years remaining off waivers from the Jays when we couldn’t even trade him away.
Jays picked up Dave Parker in September during their first WS run, he wasn’t allowed to play in the playoff, but plugged a hole and provided some offense for the last month.
The only difference now is these players aren’t tradeable anymore, they can only be picked up via waivers
mils100
I think there is just a lot of confusion on process. There used to be revocable waivers so if a player got claimed, work out a deal, let the other team have him or pull them back.
Now, if claimed, the other team has him.
While it looks bad, this is normal baseball behavior that has gone on forever. The players are still members of their teams and might be a way to shed some salary to get under a lux tax threshold for teams going nowhere. Probably a ton more guys have been put on waivers that are not reported.
mils100
This still needs changing. Imagine if they put Ohtani on waivers. Now he is on say SF for cash for a month.
flamingbagofpoop
They wouldn’t do that because then LAA wouldn’t get the QO pick. So something you don’t understand needs to be changed cuz reeeeee? That’s all too common these days.
mils100
So to your snarky reply, say ohtani says waive me as a favor and I’ll consider playing w you moving forward. Should they be able to do that? The old way was revocable waivers. This new way is not that but thanks for being a jerk about it.
