TODAY: The Tigers announced that they have requested release waivers on Shreve.
AUGUST 11: The Tigers announced they’ve designated veteran reliever Chasen Shreve for assignment. The move clears a spot in the big league bullpen for Will Vest, who has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Detroit’s 40-man roster count drops to 39.
As first reported by Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free-Press (on Twitter), Shreve has already gone unclaimed on waivers. Whether by rejection of an outright assignment or a release, he’s highly likely to become a free agent.
Shreve signed a minor league pact with Detroit over the offseason. The well-travelled southpaw cracked the Opening Day roster and would go on to make 47 appearances. While he posted only a 4.79 ERA through 41 1/3 innings, he had solid underlying marks.
The 33-year-old fanned an average 23.3% of opponents against a lower than average 6.7% walk rate. He kept the ball on the ground at a 46.8% clip and induced swinging strikes on an above-average 12.6% of his offerings. While it seemed that’d lead Detroit to trade him at the deadline, they apparently didn’t find sufficient interest to make a deal. Once the deadline passed, the non-competitive Tigers have decided to move on from Shreve entirely. He was an impending free agent, and the Tigers clearly felt the marginal dip in their bullpen quality over the season’s final seven weeks is a worthwhile trade-off for getting more reps to controllable arms.
Detroit is paying Shreve a $1.25MM salary. Just under $350K is yet to be paid out. Because Shreve was unclaimed on waivers, the Tigers will remain responsible for that sum. The organization could pull in some moderate savings from the release, however. Shreve had already unlocked $300K in innings-based incentives. He’d have triggered an additional $100K at reaching 45 and 50 innings, respectively (with $125K available at 55 and 60 frames). That’ll no longer be in play.
Once he officially returns to free agency, Shreve can pursue other opportunities. The incentives wouldn’t be available on any new contract, though perhaps he’ll find an immediate spot in a contending club’s bullpen. Another team would only owe Shreve the prorated amount of the $720K minimum for time spent on the MLB roster through season’s end. If he signs elsewhere by the end of the month, he’d be eligible for postseason play with his next team.

It’s plain to see.

I only watch Tigers games to see Shreve pitch. If he’s no longer on the team, I’m going to see the Barbie movie tonight instead.

I diasagreed with them. Your comment makes zero sense. But do you.

Really? I personally only watch them to see Maton and Javy strike out and make errors. I get a lot more action
wileycoyote56
Dumbrowski runs the Phillies, their farm system will always be questionable with DD there. Remember when he was in Detroit? He kept our farm barren
Melchez17
Who won the minor league world series last year? I’d rather see major leaguers on the major league team instead of hearing about a minor league team.
JoeBrady
You cannot maintain one without maintaining the other. This year will be the first year entered into evidence.that you need a minor league system in order to have long-term success.
Rsox
Seems odd that they held on to him at the deadline only to dump him 2 weeks later. A lottery ticket or two would have been better than the nothing they will get for him now
Motor City Beach Bum
Given what the Mets got for Leone it definitely seems like they missed the boat. Hopefully he catches on with a contender for the playoffs. Good to see Vest back!
Rickover50
There was nothing offered. This wasn’t some kind of revelation
stymeedone
They could have gotten a high level prospect and a lotto or two, if HARRIS had offered either Cincinnati or Baltimore all 4 of their pending FA pitchers. They could have sent out E-Rod, Lorenzen, Shreve, and Cisnero, and asked for Encarnacion-Strand or Westburg back as the main return, and filled the hole at 3B. As he got nothing for 3 out of the 4, its a better return than what he actually did. Both teams needed starting depth, and their bullpens could have used additional depth.
Motor City Beach Bum
If he’d done something like that everyone would’ve complained he got too little.
Separate trades like he tried to do was the way to go or to package a reliever with a starter like ithers did. I expect maybe he tried to package them like other teams did but the high asking price for Erod turned off buyers for the relievers too? He got a #5 prospect from someone’s system but fell off the rails on Erod. Who knows what the offers were, if any, for Shreve and Cisnero on their own, but given what the Mets got for Leone (Angels #9 prospect who is a second baseman) you’d like to think he could gave gotten something.
hitztheball
Baltimore made the decision that they were not going to trade any of their prospects – nothing there. The fact that Shreve went unclaimed shows you the market for him – none.
stymeedone
The Phillies system is pretty bad. Their #5 looks like a future utility fielder. He would have likely been a #10 in a decent system.
stymeedone
Baltimore traded prospects for Flaherty. Prieto looks like a better prospect than Lee, and is already hitting solidly at AAA. I’m sure HARRIS was looking for better, like Westburg or Mayo. So he got a big nothing when the LAD deal fell through. Shreve’s value was never great, but before the deadline, before other teams filled their needs, it was likely higher. As an add on, in the package I proposed, it might have gotten the conversation started. Baltimore has to realize they don’t have enough spots to keep all their players.
Melchez17
I think he’s a number 9 in the Tiger system, so yes, in a average system he probably is a 10.
GarryHarris
The Tiger front office inspires confidence.
Gwynning
DET FO drops the ball… again. Could have moved Shreve at the TDL not to mention enact Plan B, C or D for E-Rod. Maybe I’m being too critical?
Rickover50
There was no market for him at all. Love the gms here. I heard they turned down Juan Soto straight up
Gwynning
Please explain E-Rod then… and thanks for the prompt reply, Mr. Harris.
gotigers68
There may not have been a market with the remaining 16 teams
Motor City Beach Bum
There’s always a market for lefties
gotigers68
Maybe not, if we won’t accept magic beans and trinkets, anymore. I’d rather keep him.
Melchez17
Keep him instead of trading him? Now they are paying him to leave.
Harris is an idiot.
Motor City Beach Bum
I’ve been okay with most of Harris’ moves so far. Not all, Erod was a miss, not signing Candelario was a miss. GM’S don’t bat 1.000 either. Lots of good moves too: signing then trading Lorenzen; picking up Vierling (juries out on Maton and Sands); I think picking up Eddys Leonard could be a sneaky good move; depth pieces like Ibanez and McKinistry; sticking with Rogers and keeping Tork up; bullpen turned out pretty good, especially Holton and Foley, as did the starting pitching…if we had Erod, Lorenzen, Skubal, Manning and Olson as our starters all year we may have won the Division; and it was a great draft. I’m not disapponted he didn’t make more moves this year (except for the deadline thing). Smart to assess what you have and what you need first but assessment time is over.
This year the pressure is on. He needs to do something this offseason to add to the offence (in addition to promoting from within) because with that pitching, the team can be competitive if he does.
Rsox
You’re right, they need offense badly. Problem is the last slugger they signed left his power bat on the negotiating table. Maybe the Tigers should take a page out of their own past and see what the Mets want for Alonso. It worked for a long time with Cabrera, maybe lightning will strike twice
Gwynning
That sounds like a very rational and smart take, Bummer! I can get behind what you are saying and hope your rebuild continues accordingly. I love when teams have turned a corner/completed a rebuild (love the Orioles and Reds this year, personally!) and hope DET can be that squad next year. All good, sane points and nice to hear from a real DET fan. Cheers!
stymeedone
Castro and Castro being cut was also a miss as they have outperformed McKinstry, and Ibanez. He stuck with Rogers and Haase because Sands has been a bust and he didn’t add any other depth. It was the same with Torkelson, as there was no competition there either. Vierling has done fine, but since Maton and Sands haven’t produced, that’s very little return for a LH Closer. Candelario brought back more in trade than HARRIS got for Lorenzen. HARRIS also signed the injured Boyd. Avila could have done that.
Motor City Beach Bum
But Avila got fired due to a lengthy history of bad moves, which Harris does not have. Castro and Castro were no answer. Willi did nothing last year to merit being resigned and I thought you like Ibanez?? Candy had a crap year last year too. You’re basing your criticism on what Candelario and Willi have done this year. The crystal ball works well in hindsight. Soto is last years Lange with his poor control, which is not what you want for a closer. Vierling alone was worth it. Rogers is 2nd on the team in HRs, plays good defence and has a decent OPS. Tork has turned the corner so why did we need unnecessary competition?
Things are looking up for the Tigers in my view. Like I said GM’s can’t bat 1.000 either. This offseason will be telling.
ThonolansGhost
Willi Castro has done reasonably well this year, but Harold Castro has been awful.
ThonolansGhost
In fact, Ibanez and McKinstry have each outperformed Harold Castro (by a lot) this year. Take a look at their bWAR, if you don’t Believe me.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Beamer is batting like .100.
Vierling.
Mckinistry has hope. He needs to clear his head. He’s got cobbwebs bumming him out, stopping him from being as could as he can be.
Mathematically, the Tiger have NOT.BEEN eliminated and could still…potentially….WIN THE WORLD SERIES.
And…who is the everyone entity that I keep contradicting…?
Most of us were just entertaining ourselves by slammin Al Avila during the rebuild, because frankly, there wasn’t much else to do. It was entertaining. He wasn’t great, stunk sometimes, but it was pretty much just par for the course….
Too.bad corporate policy is to be so dmn fickle…and they’re so soft….they bend with the wind……
The Illiches won’t be able to hide behind Beamer. Al had no budget, Zimmerman injured….it just went downhill…..
Al was fun. I miss Al Avila.
I.just hope Harris doesn’t go out and spend.money just because….. corporate softness.
Nuitari
Harold Castro hits for almost no power, doesn’t walk, isn’t any threat on the base paths and is below average defensively at every position….
The team is hardly missing his “production.”
Melchez17
Harris has been a failure so far. He cut candelario, Reyes and the Castro’s… Traded their lefty closer for vierling, Sands and Maton. Signed Boyd. Got a singles hitting 2b for Lorenzen. Couldn’t trade ERod, Shreve or Cisnero. Bullpen and veteran lefty starters are the easiest to deal. Chose Clark over Langsford in the draft.
One long lost season
Red Wings
Willi Castro is having a nice season
Melchez17
Willi always had streaks where he looked like a really good player and then he’d hit a huge slump. Harold was always a decent hitter… .280+ lifetime average but never walked and seldom hit a homer. Great pinch hitter off the bench. Candelario was Tiger of the year twice and had a down season in 2022. Why they just dumped him is hard to figure out, especially when they had no plan B for 3B.
Boyd and Lorenzen were picked up but hadn’t pitched 100 innings in years. Lorenzen turned out great. More like a blind squirrel type of outcome with Harris. McKinstry, Ibanez have had a decent day or two but overall are below average.
Like I said… a lost year. The team had needs on offense… they still have needs. If they could have shored up one or 2 positions this year, it would make this offseason much easier. But now, Harris has a bunch of positions to fill.
Giwesi
Hindsight is 20/20. Except for the possible miss on E-Rod and I say possible because who knows what could still happen. No one knows the return being offered on him from
non LAD teams and it’s very possible because of his opt out, not very much. Then everyone would be complaining about the return. Greene, Tork, and Carpenter all appear to be ascending which is what we want to see for young guys that are 2 years old in MLB. I think the real test for Harris will be this off season when Miggys contract comes off. If Meadows, Malloy, and Keith come up next season which is likely, fans will need to allow them time to develop and fail some in order to improve eventually in their 2nd and 3rd seasons.
Motor City Beach Bum
Or…the opposite sude of that coin. He cut 3 underperformers. Traded a train wreck closer. Signed a good clubhouse guy. Picked up Phillys #5 prospect. Agree…no way to dress up the Erod thing. Clark is the better long term bet.
You left out all the good things he did. Dude you are sooo negative!
Better days ahead.
stymeedone
I have been livid since the day they cut Candelario, because he wanted $6mm and HARRIS wouldn’t go past $5mm. This is not hindsight. Jeimer was Tiger of the Year back to back seasons, and simply had one bad year. Maybe HARRIS should have used a little more hindsight himself, and not just looked at the ’22 season. Yes, as a RH side of a platoon, Ibanez has been fine. Doesn’t change what I said. The Castro’s have been better than him and McKinstry. Why did Detroit need more depth at 3B? Same as for 1B and C. Because you can’t be sure that Maton, Nevin, McKinstry, Ibanez, Short, Solak, or Camaro will work out. Haase was supposed to be the Starter, with Sands the backup. Haase has slumped. Sands has been worse. Rogers surprised HARRIS by winning the job. Torkelson has been better than last year, but is still low in the 1B rankings. What was the plan if Rogers hadn’t surprised? If Torkelson still looked completely lost? He didn’t have one. I’m sure it would have looked a lot like 3B has.
stymeedone
And both have been worse than Willi. I’ll still take the two Castros, You can even add Maton and Nevin to your side of the equation.
stymeedone
And is a solid pinch hitter, and was a fan favorite. I don’t think any of this years bench players have gained the status that Hittin’ Harold had.
stymeedone
If you cut, you need to replace. HARRIS didn’t. At least not successfully.
If he traded E-Rod and got something back, you are right, fans might have complained it wasn’t enough. Instead he got nothing back. E-Rod will opt out. HARRIS got nothing, and if a light return gives fans the right to complain, getting NOTHING gives them a licence!
Motor City Beach Bum
Nevin should NEVER wear a Tigers uni again! Maton has looked better since his demotion but he will only ever be a Utility infielder in my mind. Candy should have been signed but the Castros no. Willi’s stealing bases this year but his performance last year didn’t predict that coming. The Castro’s from last year don’t play if it’s a good team so why not take a shot to find a diamond in the rough to replace them. McKinistry and Ibanez have looked okay at times but they are not the answer either. Next test drive is Isan Diaz. Maybe one of these guys takes eventually like Thairo Estrada did in San Fran. Haase is likely going to be out of a job. Sands has been better lately but his power evaporated.
Hoping we get to see some new faces from the farm in September. Lots of work to do in the offseason but with the pitching they have and a weak division they can compete with a few additions on offence.
Melchez17
You forgot about Ibanez becoming Mike Trout and Zack Short becoming Derek Jeter.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Well, it’s just plain obvious. They should have let the Superfife run the entire team, directly.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
JIM PRICE WAS SO VALUABLE TO THE TIGERS. Especially during the rebuild. He was a savior in my experience.
gotigers68
The problem with letting Candelario go, is that we didn’t replace him with anyone.

Shreve is great evidence of how insanely talented these guys have to be to stay in the big leagues. This guy can work the zone pretty well with good stuff and doesn’t get rattled easily but the better hitters seem to tee off on him. He never gets away with mistakes and even some of his outside corner fastballs at the knees get crushed.
Maybe he should say good bye to his elbow health and throw the split finger for a year or two so he can put a nice cap on his career.
stymeedone
Shreve didn’t have a good year. He didn’t have a bad year. He did get a full year in the majors and gets his full contract. Can’t really complain.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Wow…..
JoeBrady
Feels like hw still has a little talent left. I can’t imagine he’ll last long.
GarryHarris
Even the Detroit announcers are saying absurd things like “Maton is starting to figure things out…”. What a stupid organization!
stymeedone
Maton’s stance is more compact, but he’s still hitting .170. If Maton was not hitting for average, that would be one thing. He’s also not hitting with power, and has proven he’s not a 3B. He and McKinstry should be working for the platoon 2B with Ibanez. I would rather see a full time 2B, but only one of those two should be on the team, and preferably neither.
Nuitari
Maton doesn’t belong on the big club. Ibanez, McKinstry and Short can be tolerated for the rest of the season. In truth, all 3 of them aren’t full time players though. Keith can hopefully fill the spot at 3rd or possibly 2nd next season. Preferably 3rd. I just don’t think he has the foot speed for 2nd.
Detroit is sadly stuck with Baez and he will only get worse imo. Will eventually just have to release him and eat the $$.
Nuitari
Heck, I would’ve been interested in seeing what Joe Rizzo had to offer as a platoon 3b over what Maton has shown but Detroit just released him in a move to promote Dingler to AAA.
Rizzo was a tiny bit younger than Maton btw.
Paleobros
I wonder if his player option WILL VEST.
