The Reds reportedly targeted Royals starting pitcher Brady Singer at the trade deadline, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Needless to say, their efforts were unsuccessful, as Cincinnati’s only move at the deadline was to trade for Athletics reliever Sam Moll.
It’s no surprise that the Reds were searching for starting pitching. Entering the deadline, their starters had a 5.21 ERA, and four-fifths of their Opening Day rotation was either on the injured list or had already been released. According to a report from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Reds were even willing to trade Jonathan India, once thought to be an untouchable piece of their core, to acquire young, controllable pitching. They were also linked to Eduardo Rodriguez and were said to be scouting the Mets, possibly with interest in Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander.
The 27-year-old Singer meets the young and controllable criteria better than any of those veterans; he is under team control through 2026. Furthermore, unlike Rodriguez, Scherzer, and Verlander, he doesn’t have any no-trade protection in his contract, so he couldn’t have vetoed a deal to the borderline-contending Reds. In other words, he made good sense as a target for Cincinnati on a relatively thin trade market.
Singer looked like a solid, mid-rotation starter right out of the gate in 2020, pitching to a 4.06 ERA in 12 starts. However, he ran into trouble down the stretch in 2021, posting a 5.70 ERA in the second half. The Royals moved him to the bullpen to open the 2022 season but quickly changed their minds, sending him to Triple-A to ramp back up into a starting role. Upon his return from the minors, he looked better than ever, putting up a 3.11 ERA and 3.43 SIERA in 24 games.
Unfortunately, Singer ran into another rough patch at the start of the 2023 campaign. After 15 starts, he was sporting a 6.34 ERA and 4.67 SIERA in 76 2/3 innings pitched. Since that day, however, the right-hander has turned things around once again. In nine outings, he has a 3.05 ERA and 3.90 SIERA while averaging nearly 6 2/3 innings per game. He cut his walk rate without sacrificing strikeouts, and he’s allowing far less hard contact, too. That’s exactly the kind of pitcher he looked like last season.
Ultimately the Royals were not compelled to trade Singer. He had only just begun to reverse his fortunes by the deadline, and Kansas City had little reason to sell low on such a promising arm. He still has three years of arbitration eligibility ahead of him, and it’s possible the Royals could be competitive in the AL Central within that time. If not, they still have ample opportunity to find a trade.
Similarly, the Reds weren’t facing any pressure to make a major deal. With so many talented young players under team control for the next several years, their competitive window is just beginning to open. They could have used another starter for the stretch run, but surely they were hesitant to add a pitcher who had struggled most of the season.
If Singer continues to succeed over the next six weeks, the Reds might be inclined to check back in with the Royals this winter. Cincinnati has several promising arms on the roster, including Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Andrew Abbott, Graham Ashcraft, and Lyon Richardson, but this team could certainly use a more established starter to anchor the rotation. The Reds have one of the better farm systems in the game (N0. 12 at Baseball America, No. 5 at MLB Pipeline), while the Royals have one of the worst (No. 29 at BA and MLB Pipeline), so Cincinnati should have all the necessary pieces if they decide to make a deal.
wvsteve
The Royals are really not in a good place. Farm system is near the bottom. I expect a rebuild in the off season.

The royals do at least have some young ML guys with upside…
Pasquantino, Pratto, Melendez, Witt, Maikel GArcia could all be nice players. They hired a manager that worked with a great organization. They plucked a Dayton Moore disciple to run the org. Couldn’t understand that after Moore had obviously not been on the right track any longer.
The division is soft. The twins are middling and don’t seem to have a clear direction for more than a year or 2. The tigers have some young guys but they have plenty of work to do. The Indians can’t seem to get the most out of their hitters any longer & the white Sox are a complete and utter disaster.
The division is begging for a team to take it over but nobody wants to. If the Royals went from 50 to 75-80 wins next year—-it wouldn’t completely shock me.) Might be more luck than skill (& it’s early) but the Cole Ragans transformation gave me a glimmer of hope for them.
ayrbhoy
That young Royals lineup is one of the hottest in MLB over the last month. Bobby Witt is on fire, Massey, Maikel Garci, F Fermin and Melendez are all having great 2nd halfs.
The Royals did the right thing holding on to Singer- their Pitching is behind in development compared to their hitting. KC is def on an upward trajectory
BrianStrowman9
They’re in better shape than I believe most people think but they don’t have enough. If they’re able to pull off some smart acquisitions (that may be potentially flipped like Chapman) that’ll go along way. If they were in a tougher division the outlook would be a whole lot darker for me. But they have a potentially very good infield. Outfield needs work and the pitching needs a lot of help behind the top 2.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
If it didn’t work out with the Singer, take the kids to the Moll
Maybe they can have a Sam and cheese sandwhich
Jrnomo100
Cards could use singer
bighiggy
Prieto, pages, and burelson probably gets it done if he continues to pitch well.
Jrnomo100
I give them lebitire too

I think the national anthem is the least of their worries.

Yeah this is an idea I have been tossing around in the local chat rooms recently. I think Singer makes a ton of sense for the Cardinals. 3 way deal with the Marlins we trade Herrera, Graceffo and Hudson for Singer.
DCartrow
Seemed like a good trade proposal a singer for the Reds’ second bass man.

I just watched the royals play four against Seattle’s quality pitching and came away impressed. In Witt Jr. they have one of the best young position players in the game and they have several other young players having a good year.
King of Cards
Witt is really good but they have very little besides him
Steve(shs22)
Pasquintino is going to be the sultan of swat…
You ll see
BrianStrowman9
Vinnie Pasquantino will be a nice boost to the lineup next season. MJ Melendez has excellent exit velos. He’ll be better than he is now. If they can tap into that and put him behind the plate—he’ll be a real asset. Pratto is another guy with a boatload of upside but his K issues may never let him tap into that.
Ragans and Singer isn’t a bad top 2 for a 50 win team. They need essentially an entire bullpen and a couple more starters but there’s some bones there.
You’d expect a much more impressive farm for a team that has been so bad recently.Luckily they play in the MLB toilet division and it doesn’t take a whole lot to flip the script…….
King of Cards
Pasquatino and Pratto are decent but similar players at the lowest end of the defensive spectrum. Melendez can catch but not with Perez around so he’s a negative win player. Ragans has had a good few starts looks good but no track record. Singer has upside but he’s coming off a sub par year after a 2022 breakout.
The team is a mess. It’s not quite as bad as Oakland but it’s close and their record reflects that.
BrianStrowman9
Yeah, I expect the royals to win about 65 games next year, to be clear. But the whole division is severely fractured. The White Sox are a gigantic mess. The Guardians need to overhaul their hitting coaches at the least. The Twins have dealt more talent out of their organization in the last 2 years for little to nothing than anyone in baseball. The Tigers are another team with huge holes but have young guys who could take a step forward and compete in a terrible division.
I don’t know who’s going to emerge from that division next season. It’s going to be very bad again.
The Guards can pitch and play defense so they’ll at least be a 75-80 game winner with that floor. I have no idea what the Twins will do. Half the team might miss half the season….
King of Cards
The Guardians have the pitching. If they could just spend a bit more money they could be a legit contender but as is still probably the best team in the division. I think they take a big step forward next year.
Detroit who knows lot of upside lot of question marks too. Minnesota might be losing Gray that’s gonna hurt them. The Twins will have to spend to maintain their status and I don’t think they will do that. White Sox I believe are going to sell even more players or at least I think they should. If they move Kopech, Cease, Jiminez and Moncada they could be really really bad.
This one belongs to the Reds
The Reds already had a guy throwing batting peactice every five days. They didn’t need another one like that, especially in that ballpark.
Big whiffa
Still though. Reds offered india for singer most likely and the royals baulked at that. So Phillips/Hinds/ and some random draft pick from 23 the royals liked ? How’s that for an over pay.
Let’s go down the list –
Let’s say Scherzer and verlander both waive no trade for reds. Reds surely have the payroll room – so Marte for a 40 year old rental ? How’s that sound ?? Terrible to me !
Then E Rod, he’s better than singer so arroyo petty and blake Dunn maybe gets it done ? You really think giving up all that is worth it to just compete this year ? That’s a massive amount of controllable talent.
Krall is a trader and he’s in the middle of his 3rd, 4th, 5th rebuild. Maybe after all that failure – he’s finally got it figured out. That’s what I’m hoping for as a reds fan !
Prospectnvstr
Brady Singer is a ground ball pitcher. He’d fit in well in practically every ballpark, especially in the “bandboxes” like Cincinnati.
iverbure
I think if I’m not mistaken you said that about Lance Lynn when i suggested him for the reds. Since the deadline albeit a small sample size he’s been pretty good for the dodgers.
If the reds can’t acquire struggling pitchers and make them better, they probably shouldn’t be acquiring any players to begin with. If you’re team and this goes for any team, always needs to acquire the best pitcher in the league just to make the playoffs they aren’t ready to win. It’s not realistic to acquire such a player generally ever but certainly not every year, and that’s what fans think they’re team needs
cguy
The backbone of the Reds relief corp that has consistently took the ball from a weak rotation and handed it off to the ML leader in saves, namely Buck Farmer, Ian Gibaut, Derek Law, Alex Young and Fernando Cruz were all stuggling pitchers (dfaed) and made better. Weren’t able to accomplish as much with Weaver as a sp reclamation project.
This one belongs to the Reds
Heyman’s next story: Reds tried to go back in time and sign Sandy Koufax but the Delorean didn’t work.
They knew they could get him cheap.
Gwynning
At least they tried? Will Greene and Lodolo be too little, too late? Upgrade that rotation in the Offseason and the future is hot in Cincy. Great article!
FromTheCheapSeats
Or… leave that rotation alone and enjoy Greene, Lodolo, Abbott, Ashcraft, and Williamson blossoming into the best homegrown rotation the Reds have ever seen.
Bdonnell
Exactly. None of those guys are over 25.
Add in guys with good stuff like Levi Stoudt, Lyon Richardson, Connor Phillips, Connor Overton, and eventually Chase Petty & Rhett Lowder.
Not only do the Reds have young quality SP candidates, they have future depth to survive injuries/regressions, or swing a trade for a bigger WAR acquisition than would have been possible this year.
No one expected the Reds to be in the playoff conversation this year anyway, so the experience gained for all the young guys this year will be invaluable.
Just need to start/keep locking these key pieces up for years like the Braves have, and watch some fun baseball for the next 6-7 years.
krumbledkookie
Would have been a nice move for Cincy.
rundmc1981
Would have loved to hear the pitch to Scherzer/Verlander to waive their NTC. Ask out a supermodel, ya never know.
spooky
Singer to SFG in the off-season and the reclamation begins. The stuff plays, he needs consistency and places like SF, LAD and TB are where you find it
Butter Biscuits
Stingy move by Cindy not pulling the trigger and making it happen, for the playoffs you need to do what it takes
Foxtrot Unicorn Charlie Kilo
Over pay prospect capital for an inconsistent pitcher? Pass.
Ultimately I think the Reds pursuing old friends Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen, Lucas Giolito, Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell. They can sign 2 of the names above and trade with the Mariners or some team with excess pitching for a more consistent rotation piece reds are well on their way to contending.
I see the Reds signing Sonny Gray, signing Jordan Montgomery, and trading for George Kirby or Logan Gilbert. Reds have enough offensive prospects to get a deal done without affecting the ML roster too much.
Foxtrot Unicorn Charlie Kilo
For instance Logan Gilbert for
Arroyo or Collier
Marte
India
Fairchild
and whatever else it takes
helps both the Mariners and Reds.
BrianStrowman9
2 top 100 guys + India is a bit of an overpay for Logan Gilbert…..
BrianStrowman9
Also it’s funny because Jerry DiPoto would be trading for his old prospects back…….
I just can’t see the Mariners moving the guy. I think there’s easier ways to make the team better now than trading their #2 starter for prospects + India.
BrianStrowman9
Yeah Gilbert has 4 more years of control too. Thought he was down to 3. Can’t imagine they’d move him without getting a plug and play ML’er like Matt McLain or something…. Obviously don’t see the man moving.
I think Seattle probably needs to lean into building up the ML roster at this point. Can’t really see a subtraction to get better somewhere else. They have some prospect chips that they can use to get better.
Foxtrot Unicorn Charlie Kilo
4 arb years of a #2 doesnt come cheap. India has completely fallen off the map and is definitely a change of scenery candidate. Hes a league average bat with ok defense. Maybe he regains his offensive form maybe he doesnt.
BTV puts gilbert at around a 75
Collier or Arroyo, Marte, India checks in around a 55 to 60
So not really an overpay based on current player values.
mgomrjsurf
Marte has been a Mariner before.
Tiger22matt
Who do you think he is Castillo? He’s not on that level and the Reds aren’t giving up anywhere near that. They would just develop Phillips if that’s the price.
This one belongs to the Reds
If the Reds just had one veteran starter to help the four young guys, they might still be leading the division.
Now the bullpen is overworked so they mostly aren’t getting it done anymore, and three starters are on the DL, even though one is not a long term solution.
The kid GM screwed up last offseason and definitely at the deadline after the young kids got them where they are. Face it.
Bdonnell
I don’t like the long-term consequences of your thinking.
Would a veteran anchor in the rotation be nice? Would I love for the Reds to make it into the playoffs this year?
Absolutely, but it would be a mistake to sell off any of their young prospect capital on this year’s team to make a playoff push. NO ONE expected the Reds to make the playoffs this year, but the talent is real and will all be here for a while. The odds of this year’s Reds team making a WS run with a bunch of rotation kids past their innings threshold and a bunch of worn out bullpen arms would be REALLY low. Give all these guys the rest of this season and off-season to continue to develop and find out which youngsters (MLB&MiLB) are real & which might be more hype. The ones that look like more hype than substance can be the trade fodder, but many of the prospects are too young to really know yet. There’s no reason to rush what could be sustained excellence for an outside shot this year.
BrianStrowman9
Reds are like the O’s last year. A year too early but they showed a whole lot of promise. They couldn’t buy enough pitching at the deadline to be a true contender. I like the wait and see at this point. They’ll obviously need to address the rotation in the off-season. Their outlook looks as bright as any in their division.
The brewers won’t have their top 2 arms much longer. The Pirates are behind the Reds in terms of talent. The Cubs are a tough evaluation given what they can potentially lose (or gain) this off-season. Good time to be a reds fan for sure though.
Armaments216
The Reds have almost no money on the books for next season and not much in arbitration salaries either. They can definitely afford to overpay for a free agent starting pitcher or two. And that’s probably all they need to supplement Greene, Lodolo, Achcraft, Abbott and their other developing starters.
The only real reason for the Reds to consider the trade market this offseason is the need to do something with the surplus of infielders continuing to pile up on their 40-man.
stymeedone
Eduardo would have looked good on the Reds. He would provide the experience to help a young staff. I don’t know if they were on his no trade list, and wonder if HARRIS circled back when the LAD trade went south.
jonzin07
The Royals have some exciting young players to watch, and they’re starting to gel, kinda reminds me of ‘13 when that core started coming together, they just need another good starting pitcher or two and a bonafide stopper in the bullpen
DarkSide830
The Royals have no farm and relatively little MLB talent. Not a good spot.
But It Do
