The Padres remain one of the league’s most interesting edge cases going into deadline day. After tonight’s loss to the Rockies, San Diego sits five games out in the Wild Card picture.
Buster Olney of ESPN tweeted Monday afternoon the Friars are evaluating the market for help in the outfield/designated hitter mix and the bullpen. Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of the New York Post relayed (on Twitter) the Padres’ asking price in talks on Josh Hader is so high that other clubs believe they’re likely to hold him past the deadline.
San Diego brass has been clear they preferred to add for a playoff push rather than tear things down after another aggressive offseason. It seems that remains the case, with last weekend’s sweep of the AL West-leading Rangers perhaps giving the front office the ammunition to buy.
In that case, adding position player depth is a sensible target. The Friars have gotten excellent seasons from Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim, while Manny Machado has been on a tear since a slow start. The bottom half of the lineup has struggled, however. Catcher was a major question mark for a while, although Gary Sánchez has provided a strong power threat there since San Diego nabbed him off waivers.
Jake Cronenworth has had a poor season at first base, while the veteran collection of Matt Carpenter, Nelson Cruz and Rougned Odor off the bench didn’t work. Cruz and Odor have already been released; Carpenter is hitting .166/.296/.302 over 207 trips to the plate.
The bullpen has been solid, even though tonight’s loss dropped them to a staggering 0-10 in extra-inning contests. San Diego relievers entered play Monday ranked ninth in ERA (3.78) and fourth in ground-ball percentage (48.1%). They’re 21st in strikeout rate (23.2%) and 19th in swinging strikes (11.4%), though, so adding some swing-and-miss could be welcome. Getting Robert Suarez back after he missed the first half of the season helps. He and Hader would form an excellent high-leverage duo — assuming the Friars indeed hold onto the latter — but Steven Wilson is the only other San Diego reliever with 10+ innings who’s striking out over a quarter of opponents.
Not anymore
I’m that bored 23 year old living in his parents basement(which is why I have time on a Monday night to watch a meaningless Rockies padres game). In these 23 pathetic years I have never seen my overall loserness be outdone until tonight. That team is a bunch of lifeless hacks who couldn’t care less if they won or lost. And I’m not even a fan, (refer above if you’re bewildered as to why I’m watching this game)
I am not sure which team you are referring to, it could be either
It was an entertaining game with some really nice defensive plays.
It’s OK to admit you’re a closet Friars fan. I know what it’s like to cheer for a s show franchise. Just hoping for meaningful ball in Sept and reaching the dance…
That’s what I’ve been saying these players are getting paid they aren’t even trying. By the way living in you’re parents basements is a blessing rent is ridiculous.
It was a wet night with sloppy play on both sides that’s game was played thru rain that ended around midnight local time after a 2 hr delay. Of course the game play didn’t look stellar.
Man you mean their genius idea to fill the bench with 2 actual corpses, Rougnout Odor and Adam Engel didn’t work out? Crazy. Who coulda seen this coming
Odor was not a corpse. He’s just not a bench piece for a contender.
Referring to cruz and carpenter of course
Maybe he was fooled into thinking he was a corpse due to the odor
Could’ve sworn Odor played a literal corpse in The Mummy.
GMoney was correct and could have added more names.
Odor can hit. He just can’t hit a baseball.
“Ouch!” Bautista added, after hearing your quip.
Engel should still be a bench piece in Chicago.
I agree.
Time to pack it in, 2023 wasn’t their year…
Why not double down? Eat 1/2 of Baez’s contract, get ERod too, and send back a lottery ticket. That’d shore up the Friars DH and solidify the rotation without costing any prospect capital.
This Padres team is too talented to be losing this much. If something clicks and they squeak into the playoffs, then they’re a legit World Series contender.
The Tigers need prospects who are two or three years away. Just the kind of commodity the Padres could afford to sacrifice for this year’s potential run.
Poor Padres… LOL!!!
Brutal loss tonight.
Idk what to do with this team. It’s the best worse team I’ve ever seen.
Maybe they need to trade away hader and snell to take the pressure off them. They just rack under the pressure every single time.
Re: “…….best worst team I’ve ever seen.”
You might get an argument about that from the denizens who inhabit Citi Field. A once-in-a-lifetime payroll and 18 games out of first place.
Like others who have posted similar thoughts, I also agree that the Padres are gonna make a run at a wild card slot. Just too much talent not to.
And for that reason, I believe they will not trade Snell or Hader today.
Padres really thought they were going somewhere after winning three in a row against the Rangers. Then they beat themselves in Colorado. It was a nice run!
Preller must have a lifetime contract with the Padres
The Padres need to explore the market for a new GM. When will they wise up and call a mistake, a mistake?
I know I’m in the minority here and people will disagree but I don’t think it’s a bad thing to just stand pat at the deadline. I’m not guaranteeing it to happen but would I be shocked if the Padres go on a run the 2nd half and make it to the playoffs? Absolutely not.
Not saying they’ll win the world series but playoff off baseball is another creature. Sometimes it takes a while for a team with new pieces to gel.
Holding Snell and Hader and then not winning the WS would be an absolute nightmare scenario for the Padres.
Idk it could just be me but I feel like it’s so easy to go to extremes.
Is it really an absolute nightmare scenario if they made the NLCS but didn’t win? I think there’s something to be said about a team having faith and going for it – isn’t that what we want more teams to do? It is a game, after all.
Why did you say, it is only a game after all? People say that, following most any kind of statement. I never have understood it.
Let’s trade for player. Its just a game. Let’s not trade for player. Its just a game.
Also, well we’re not just gonna give him away. Or we’re not gonna make a trade just to make a trade.
Its all meaningless statements that go without saying. That most of us would never say directly to another person while making a transaction.
Im not gonna sell that car just to sell it. Its just a car after all.
I find it strange why people say what they say.
That all almost reads like poetry
Why did you say, it is only a game after all?
========================
That’s like most of life. The important part of “fan” is that it is short for “fanatic”. The point of competing is to care whether you win or lose, even if you don’t have high expectations of winning.
In your car example, if it is transportation, who cares? But if it is a 1967 Chevelle, then you are supposed to care. If you own a Tiant collection, then you are supposed to be looking for an affordable 1968 PSA 10.
Get back to me when faith wins championships.
Not making it to the postseason is even worse. The Padres are about blow a perfect opportunity when they hold on to the top two trade chips and instead hope to grab the final wild card spot.
You know who’s in the minority with you? Preller. Well sort of. I never thought SD was selling. Don’t think they are standing pat either. I see them buying. Think of all the big trades he made. How he get all those players? He paid more than everyone else. If he is willing to out bid every other team he probably finds the offers he received underwhelming.
I hate not selling rentals. And in this sellers market x2. But all the $ they spent and all the prospects already traded. Snell Hader are a drop in the bucket. Playoff games bring in a lot of $. Don’t they have a tv deal or subscriptions to sell? 2 months is a lot of time. One hot week or two good ones and they have a wild card.
You say that like it’s just a matter of doing it.
Eric Hosmer, Wil Myers are both available as well as Jonathan Villar. They don’t need to trade and Zack Britton is still out there. Recognizable names.
Don’t forget there’s Luke Voit too!
I’m sure Tommy Pham can be had… just keep him away from titty bars and make sure he isn’t playing in any fantasy leagues with Joc Pederson!!!
Got needs? White Sox are your guys. Need bullpen arms? Bummer, Scholtens, Shaw and Middleton are still available. 1st base? Gavin Sheets and Yasmani Grandal. DH? Eloy Jimenez. Don’t forget the guys in triple A that could be useful. Clint Frazier, Adam Haseley, Billy Hamilton, Stephen Piscotty, Trayce Thompson on rehab, Erik Gonzalez, Alex Colome, Davis Martin, and Jimmy Lambert. Who you need?
The Dodgers should just gift San Diego Lance Lynn and call it reparations for stealing their purpose in life.
@YEP the Padres will take one Middleton and one Burger with no pickles.
I’m sorry, no food or drinks available.
Wow bases loaded and zilch in extras. The Friars still scare me, call it respect, way too much fire power to continue like this. I’m still expecting a winning run from them. Those 7 games coming up in the next 2 weeks will determine which one makes the playoff dance. Go Snakes!
I think SD has solid shot at wildcard. How long was Machado Soto not that good? Ringworm miss part of season? I know Musgrove was out. Snakes better get a starter tomorrow.
Since the A’s are leaving Oakland maybe they can share a facility with them in Las Vegas??? I’m sure Manfred and the owners could be bought off to pull that off. Padres need a change of scenery. How about a name change to fit the current group too. Call the NL West version of Las Vegas team The Gangsters.
How about renaming the new team The Glock 40’s??
55 seasons and zero championships to show for it. That’s brutal.
Rangers are 63 seasons and counting, so at least they’re not the worst.
That loss to the Rockies was, ummm, something to say the least
Does Preller have anything left worth trading? He’s going to try offer up magic beans and war bonds shortly
Tons. Not that he should part with the best assets.
Bader,Carpenter & Soto for DJL,Peralta,Josh Donaldson. Money washes and DJ signed for 3 more years.
Harrison Bader is a Yankee
He was referring to his younger brother, Master
Oh him!!
He fisted one out to right field last night.
You can’t even remember which player plays for which team. Stick to your fantasy beer leagues.
The legendary Martian is what will be needed plus other prospects. Leave the old awful contract guys in NY.
Not that Soto is going anywhere and wouldn’t see it being NY.
Because of the $ the Yankees won’t trade for Soto, but they definitely have the prospects to get it done, if they actually wanted to.
Not even close.
Leave it alone SD. You’ve got 4 of the theoretical best in the game in your lineup and you still can’t get it done. You’ve got no chemistry. Fire sale it all and rebuild. You’re not catching LA or AZ. Rather ludicrous you’d still be looking for more offense.
They looked pretty bad tonight in Colorado. Can’t score with bases loaded no outs in the 10th, that suggests more than pen help needed. They seem like they are out of it, but who knows, they have some bats.
Do they need to eat some money to move a contract or two or attach a prospect and move them to a rebuilding club? If they free up some cash then maybe Preller will spend a little more wisely
Why does Juan Soto keep getting lumped together with Kim, Tatis and Machado? True, he gets on base a lot but mostly from walks. He cannot or will not make the necessary effort on defense. He’s not an anchor, rather an albatross. I hope the Pads don’t re-sign him.
SOSO will probably be traded OFF SEASON. His defense is IFFY. It seems when he is put in Stressful position he takes the Easy way out
WALK INSTEAD OF SWINGING
Watch the inter action with players in Dugput. Wants to be Focal Point
Soto will be traded at next summer’s deadline if the Padres are out of the race. Otherwise they will keep him until the end and tag him with the QO.
There’s no excuse for the kind of season the Padres are having. Loaded lineup, loaded pitching staff, all star closer…it makes no sense! It’s time to start firing the leadership! But hey at least they drew a hard line on luis campusano, what a difference maker!
The lineup is 18th in scoring-not loaded.
Love the Rangers ownership….got rid of Preller and Daniels at JUST the right time. total clown show kids that happen to be GMs.
Wait… Tampa has one of the best teams in baseball.
Sometimes a team just doesn’t get along well – like they don’t click. That’s how the Padres look this year. That’s how they play most of the time – without life. The FO needs to sort out who and why and remove the poison pill, there’s conflict on this team and apparently below the surface
Full – I think you are dead wrong. I’ve watched every game that mlbtv will allow me to watch and I’ve seen absolutely nothing to suggest this. Tatis has embraced RF. The starters are all in for each other. The bench is weak and a generally speaking, 2-3 starters (1b, CF, C) have underperformed for better parts of the year.
The all time lowest mark for RISP thru about 90 ish games is the problem.
See last night and any other games for example. Bases loaded and no outs in Colorado and no runs from 5, 6 and 7 hitters.
Or even, 2 runs against a 6 ERA starter in Colorado thru 8 2/3 (and the BP portion of those innings).
Trying to hard – probably. Lack of concentration as a whole – probably. Maybe a little selfish (trying to get a bomb when moving a runner would be better) – probably.
Cancer in the clubhouse – probably not.
The only possible one is Carp who isn’t likely happy about lack of playing time but #26 on the bench isn’t poisoning a clubhouse.
, 2-3 starters (1b, CF, C) have underperformed for better parts of the year.
=======================
4 starters-you have to add in the DH.
Joe you are very correct sir.
Should’ve never let Nabil Crismatt go.
They should be selling
Cashman……please call the Padres regarding Stanton……..offer to pay part of his salary….anything to move him…..he most likely would accept a move home to CA, and might just provide the offense as a part time DH and outfielder, they are looking for……in the ix of all those high priced offensive players, he just might rediscover his hitting Mojo….any way worth a try……
My feeling, as a Braves fan, is that if they can’t get Hader, Snell, or Stroman; stand pat. The team is good enough as is.
Are the Padres willing to take on Judge’s contract?
Nah, they can Stanton or Arson Judge instead though.
I feel bad for the Padres. They are in bed with Machado for a long time and he is a loser. He’ll never be part of a team that win anything. Not to say he won’t win some individual accolades, because he is a very talented ball player. I’m also Not saying he’s not a nice guy, but he just isn’t a winner. Derek Jeter, as much as I couldn’t stand him, was a winner. Guy knew how to win; refused to lose. Machado doesn’t have the same mental makeup. With him playing such a prominent role in that clubhouse, I don’t think they’ll ever win while he’s there.
Wow, I couldn’t disagree more about Machado. His contract extension was one of the few I thought to be a great investment. He’s capable and what’s more, his heart is in the game. The same can be said for Kim, Tatis, some of the pitching staff, Campusano, and Sanchez, Players who fall short include Bogaerts, Grisham, and Cronenworth. I wish the Pads could trade Cronenworth but as for Bogaerts and Grisham, they have heart and soul and are committed to the team.
Padres are hopeless- might as well try next year- we can’t even beat the Rockies
Have the Padres explored dumping Xander? I wanted the Sox to re-sign him, but after I saw 11/$280, I laughed and said “Nvm this is Jacoby Ellsbury 2.0 y’all can have him for tyhat money. Thanks for the memories, X.” They have 3 to 5 other SSs on the roster, anyway
No one wants that contract except the Padres.
How much would you pay for an almost 31-year old SS, with a mediocre glove, and a 108 OPS+?
I mean, he is still a fine SS, but aging. At this point, and I am being slightly generous with the age, maybe he is worth $125M/5? The absolute opening bid by Preller has to include a check for $100M+.
Preller has to be canned after this year, right?
After witnessing the Padres’ pathetic loss to the hapless Rockies last night, I’m convinced they should sell and sell hard.
IMVHO, the Padres should still go for it. They are still #6 in run differential. But they need a 1B & DH.
Sanchez is capable at DH.
