This week, host Darragh McDonald is joined by Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors to discuss the happenings of the recent trade deadline, including:
- The Mets decided to sell and sell big, maybe even for 2024 (1:15)
- The AL West turned into an arms race, with the Astros getting Justin Verlander and the Rangers getting Max Scherzer, among other deals (15:15)
- The Padres decided to go for it, holding onto Blake Snell and Josh Hader, as well as acquiring others (23:25)
- Cubs also decide to go for it, holding onto Cody Bellinger and Marcus Stroman, acquiring Jeimer Candelario (26:55)
- The Reds were surprisingly quiet (29:35)
- The Twins also sat on their hands (33:40)

Great job guys, always a fun listen! The length of the show seems fine, too. Any longer and I’d probably have to break-up the episode into 2 segments. (Which would be fine, too!)

The Twins need to bring Dallas Keuchel to their 26 man roster.
The Twins have 3, maybe 5 starters, who have been struggling for the past month from too much use, and desperately need a 6 man rotation to get them through these last 50 plus games.
We are TIRED of Ryan giving up 4 home runs a game because Joe Ryan is TIRED.
If the Twins refuse to DFA Joey Gallo, who is a detriment to the Twins offense, they can put Jose De Leon, whose injuries prevent him from returning to the roster in 2023, on the 60 day disabled list, and add Dallas to the rotation.

> We are TIRED of (Joe) Ryan
> giving up 4 home runs a game
In 54 career starts, Joe Ryan has given up 4 homeruns once in his career—Aug 2, 2023–last night.
He gave up 5 homeruns on both June 27, 2023 and July 29, 2022.

Seems like a lot more teams stood pat than making trades.
Braves – didn’t need to make a deal, 8th inning set up addition would have been good.
Gnats – held onto too many players
Cubs – no major additions in a weak division.
Yankees. – usually quiet

Candalerio doesn’t count?
BigGarg
Candelerio is 8-9 as a Cub and they’ve scored 36 run in his two games. I’d say that’s a pretty nice addition.

This is why I still come to MLBTR; for the comical takes like this. Jeimer Candelario was the best position player moved at the deadline. He already has 3.5 bWAR this year, yet you call that no major additions in a weak division. That’s the top 2023 WAR moved at the deadline, and currently ranks 25th overall in the league at ESPN (before the nightly update).

Giants did essentially nothing but frankly I think it makes more sense than most people think.

Scherzer, the truth! Too bad the Rangers traded for Scherzer, the Mariners season is over now! Oh wait, he sucks! Stupid Rangers trade good prospects for a busted old pitcher, raised their payroll by a ton, and they still suck! Best part is the Rangers have to eat his contract for another year when he’s no better than a #4 this year and probably equivalent to Corbin by next season! I won’t even get into the stupid Verlander deal the Astros signed, he might even be useful unlike Scherzer, but the contract will still be regrettable! Then the Angel’s leverage what’s left of their horrendous farm system to get Giolito, who has already been worse in two starts than what they already had in the system. Mariners are going to be a dynasty with the way the other teams are crapping the bed with their desire to acquire antiques and useless high cost veterans!

The difference is that teams like the phillies didn’t have an Ohtani like asset they were forgoing cashing in on.

Teams should start developing pitchers/dhs again, minor league thing first

Imagine a scenario in which the Padres miss a WC spot which could easily happen.
Remember, the Padres will be playing some more difficult teams over the next couple of weeks.
I would think this would spark serious changes ahead.

Curious as to why the Reds failed to improve their pitching depth at the deadline? Their pitching staff has been hammered by the rival Cubs in this most recent series.
