The reasoning behind extending the trade deadline is because teams aren’t sure if they want to go for it or not? There are only 50 someodd games left on Aug 1st… if you don’t know by now, then you will never know.
gbs42
Well, two more weeks would be another dozen or so games. A particularly hot or cold streak certainly could change a team’s calculus. Just ask the Angels.
JoeBrady
That would argue for no trade deadline at all.
Melchez17
Decisions are so hard… why not wait until the end of the season to decide? No trade deadline… it’s hard to figure these things out.
JoeBrady
Decisions are so hard…
===========================
That’s the reason that I like the 7/31 deadline. You’re forcing GMs to make a decision on whether to play the cards he is holding. Moving that decision until August is like letting the player see some of the flop.
Making tough decisions on whether or not you want to hold them or fold them, is part of the fun of the trade deadline.
VonPurpleHayes
This would just lead to teams holding on to impactful talent for longer. It would lessen the significance of the deadline because impact players would have less time to improve potential contenders.
Captain-Judge99
The Yankees rotation really has been the least of their problems, but it is now. The Yankees NEED at least 2 lefty hitters in their lineup. One that hits for power and average, and a contact hitter that hits for average, with some speed. I could care less what anyone on here has to say about Estevan Florial, he’s been rotting in AAA, and would of somewhat helped this situation if he had be given a chance, nobody said he wasn’t going to strike out a lot either. Florial is an excellent defender with power and speed that was essential for the Yankees this season, but wasn’t used.
Joe says...
Now would be the time to call Florial up and give him an extended look. Should be no problem to DFA someone like McKinny to make room for him. If Florial sucks, so be it but give him the chance. Call up Pereira as well.
I like the rotation for next year providing Cortez and Rodon are healthy. Sign a mid rotation pitcher (preferably a lerty) and a third baseman. And a left fielder as necessary.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Pereira, Peraza, and Wells should all be called up soon. They’ll need to figure out what to do with Higgy for next year. Ben Rortvedt has options so they can send him down. I’ll miss Higgy if he leaves.
Captain-Judge99
Yes and a great call, Joe. I definitely agree!
Joe says...
Don’t know if any of you watch “Foul Territory” on YouTube but they have an episode that tells everything you need to know about why they aren’t developing good players right now. Absolutely worth watching.
Captain-Judge99
Thanks for mentioning it. I’ll definitely check it out.
Dr2022
What are they waiting for already. It’s not like they afraid he’s going to get exposed in the major leagues, and no other team would want him. They already tried moving him, or trading him, and the teams were not exactly lining up for his services. In fact nobody wanted him at all.
For the Yankees, of course it’s all about money. They want to manipulate service time. That’s it save as many pennies as I can for Steinbrenner. He needed to make all his other investment another sports leagues and everywhere else ,except the Yankees that is
JoeBrady
It’s not like they afraid he’s going to get exposed in the major leagues
=========================
I agree. I am all for giving prospects a decent amount of development time. But past about age 24, the minor ABs won’t do you any more good-the development stage is over. It’s like Dalbec and Chavis for the RS.
Which doesn’t mean a kid will never develop at age 27, but at some point, you need to give him a chance or try to cash in on whatever talent another GM will see in him.
Perksy
I agree as well. I’ve seen enough of watching McKinney and Bauers strike out all the time. Bauers stuck out 34 out of last 75 plate appearances. Plus neither plays good defense. At least Florial can provide that.
Captain-Judge99
Well Perksy, Florial is going to strike out a lot also. Lol, but if he can give us a .235 12-15 homers, and 10-15 stolen bases right now, we’ll definitely take it. It would certainly be an upgrade over what’s there right now as far as leftfield. We could DFA Greg Allen or Franchy Cordero.
PoisonedPens
Cashman needs to re-think his whole method of roster construction. Too many ABs to the Calhouns and McKinneys and Bauers of the world. Too much faith in having five starters; have to go 7-8 deep on pitching (ask the Dodgers about this one, as well) And too little opportunity to the on-the-verge players, which is usual.
JoeBrady
The Yankees NEED at least 2 lefty hitters in their lineup.
=============================
That’s kind of funny since I had the same conversation in 2021 when the NYY went into the season with the 37 y.o. Gardner as their only lefty.
dubinsky
Dominguez and Ohtani might fit the need
Captain-Judge99
Ohtani would be crazy to come to the Yankees, doubt the Yankees would even make him an offer truthfully. Ohtani most likely is signing with the Dodgers, Padres, or staying with the Halo’s. I bet my bottom dollar, it’s between the lst of the 2 I lst mentioned. Ohtani is a west coast guy.
Captain-Judge99
@JoeBrady- Well you think could do me a solid? Can you remind the front office yet again that this is vital? I think they have a knack for forgetting, for some reason or the other!
JoeBrady
Cash is not the worst GM in the world but has stunning blind spots.
In 2021, he insisted on playing Torres at SS, even though I think everyone agreed that he didn’t have the glove for it. Cash probably knew this, but he committed $90M to DJ, and he had no reasonable position except 2B.
They were both good players at the time, but he should’ve chosen one or the other-sign DJ and trade Torres, or just let DJ walk. DJ is still ‘okay’, but you are spending $15M per until age 37.
And promoting Volpe, and wasting a year of service time, when he could’ve gotten the same production from IKF?
And does it feel like they are forcing Volpe into SS, to duplicate the Jeter experience, even though Peraza might be the better fielder?
Dr2022
Nobody says he’d be a superstar either. But he certainly would’ve been better than the trash they’ve been putting out there. another example of the Yankee front office incompetence
Anthony maresca
I totally agree with you here and im certain Florial can provide .250/20+/75+ with 10 Triples, 40+ SB with superior defense if given 500 at bats! This is Analytics crap and Brian Cashman’s call.
YankeesBleacherCreature
You’re talking about a 4+ WAR player here. It doesn’t look like he’ll accumulate that in his MLB career.
Dr2022
He’s definitely worth a look, and extended look, not 50 piecemeal at bats spread over a bunch of years. Nobody would be successful with that amount of playing time. The running theory around forums is that the Yankees are afraid he will be exposed in the majors, and then no other team will want him.
The reality is that they tried trading him, moving him several times and not one team was interested. So that invalidate that theory.
Samuel
Captain-Judge99;
The Yankees (and Mets) have no clue on how to develop their young players in the minors to be prepared to compete at the ML level, They might get one good one every 3-4 years or so. They’re not the only 2 organizations (not that either as even built a rudimentary organization) like that in MLB. In their cases they’ve been doing it for years.
Both teams use the ridiculous higher amount of revenue they generate due to the size of their marketing area to buy players. The new Mets owner is taking it a step further by buying prospects – by trading functioning players he radically overpaid to sign with his team, then covering much of the excess salary when trading them for the prospects he needs because his organization cannot find or develop any (as if that organization will develop the prospects he bought). .
Captain-Judge99
@Samuel- agreed, Judge is really the only player the Yankees have developed in years. I think Volpe and Peraza could be something special, and I’m curious to see how Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones are also, in the near future.
Samuel
Captain-Judge99;
I’m not high on Volpe at all. Were he in a quality developmental organization he would have been sent back to AAA within 2 months of the season to work on things. I think he’ll be a Gleyber type of player – OK, has his moments.
Peraza I like a lot more, but am concerned he’ll be next in a list of young Yankee youngsters that have ben ruined by Cashman and company. He’s a superior defensive MI – and if they can hit better over a period of years they can be extremely valuable.
For both of them I’d use as a comp Bryson Stott of the Phillies. Now 25 years-old. A former #1 draft choice. The previous administration couldn’t bring him along. Dombrowski overhauled their development the past 3 years. Last year they had Stott up with the parent team mostly playing SS with some 2B and 3B. What struck me as well as their broadcasters was his superior instincts. He knew when to circle a grounder, when to take a short path to cut it off, what arm angle to throw from, etc. And it was clear he had a great swing and hitting instincts. He worked with Kevin Long (best hitting coach in MLB) over the winter, and until the past week or so was one of 5 batters in the NL hitting .300 (now at .298). John Kruck brought up the point that he looks like a future batting champion….if Luis Arraez moves to the AL. With the signing or Trea Turner Stutt was moved to 2B, and is one of the best in the NL. Point being that while Volpe is younger, I see none of Stotts’ qualities in him.
As for Jasson Dominguez – he’s a 20 year-old hitting .240 in AA with a .741 OPS, both which rose recently as the good pitchers have been moved up to AAA and the majors. Hardly the dominant Yankee monster the PR people were pushing. Spencer Jones I don’t know – hitting .261 in A+ ball at age 22. Not exactly eye-popping. In both their cases made worse by the Yankees poor development process, which actually seems to get worse as players move up to the bigs.
Samuel
P.S.
If pigs could fly and the Yankees would hire a seasoned qualified PoBO starting next year, it’s possible their youngsters would get better. But it does take a year or two to hire in quality coaches throughout the organization and get everyone on the right page as to how they’re developing the individual players.
Captain-Judge99
Samuel it’s funny I wanted Volpe to start the year at AAA, truthfully. I knew he wasn’t ready. I think your right Peraza should of started the season with the Yankees at shortstop, where he belongs. I would of called Volpe up closer to the all star break, if I was able to move Gleyber Torres at the deadline. I do like Volpe though, but not once did I compare this kid to Derek Jeter like others did. I do think he’s a special type of player though playing out of position. He’s played a lot better shortstop then I expected, but I would of called him up by the All-Star break or after the trading deadline. Peraza should of opened up the season playing shortstop. I agree, not sure if I like him better then Volpe yet, we’ll see.
JoeBrady
It should’ve been IKF. he’s been pretty decent, before they decided that a weak bat/GG SS should play LF.
Captain-Judge99
I’m okay with IKF playing the outfield in extra inning games, or being a late defensive replacement, but as your saying his best position is 3rd base, or shortstop, not the outfield. Meanwhile Florial continues to rot at AAA. Smh
dubinsky
Florial has failed to make sufficient contact against good pitching.
the Yankees have kept him around and given him more than enough time to develop, an, given his physical gifts, it’s unfortunate for all that he has not
Samuel
dubinsky;
If the Yankees would have even a hinto of class, they’d have moved Florial to another organization 2 years ago. If you can’t develop a player – move him to another team and give them a chance.
Last night a story broke in NYC with a Yankees minor leaguer stating they get no instruction in the minors. sounds right – and most Yankee fans agree.
Cashman and Boone have been utter disasters – and truth be told, most Yankee fans know it and want them out.
Captain-Judge99
@dubinsky- oh really? Just how many bats has Florial had to prove himself, genius?
Samuel
Captain-Judge99;
He hits in AAA. Which I agree doesn’t mean it translates to MLB.
Then again, the guy plays a major league CF and is currently slashing .297 / .390 / .588 /.977 in AAA.
Since the Yankees have screwed-up so many young hitters the past 10 years what chances does he have of succeeding with them? Why not move the guy to a team that thinks they can get him to adapt to MLB pitching? They can get a decent prospect back, and they’re not doing anything with Florial.
Yankees are a lost, classless, vindictive operation.
mlb1225
The big thing the Yankees need to do at the end of this season is to clear house when it comes to their player development. Here are the last five position players and pitchers to produce at least 10 fWAR for them that the Yankees themselves either drafted or signed internationally:
Position players: Judge, Gary Sanchez, Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, Hideki Matsui
Pitchers: Tanaka, Severino, Betances, David Robertson, Phil Hughes
The most recent debut-ees are Judge and Sanchez (both 2016), half debuted pre-2010 (Gardner, Cano, Matsui, Robertson, Hughes), two were already well estabished in Japan before coming to the US (Matsui and Tanaka), and two others are relievers (Betances and Robertson). That’s it. .The last three Yankees first round picks to post at least 10 bWAR are Judge, Ian Kennedy, and Hughes. In today’s game, it’s all about player development. The best teams aren’t the ones who spend the most, it’s the ones who are the best at developing players.
mlb1225
Also, from 2010 to 2020, Yankees first rond draft picks have combined for 45.6 bWAR. That doesn’t sound too bad, and that’s roughly 3.3 bWAR per player (14 total draft picks). But of that 45.6 mark, 40 of it has come from Judge. He is basically their only first round success story since the 2010s. Rounds 2-10 are also bleak, with Jordan Montgomery being the lone player since 2010 to have at least +5 bWAR for the Yankees since the 2010 draft (lest you count Jon Gray who did not sign in 2011 in the 10th round).
LouWhitakerHOF
I like the Trade Deadline where it is. There are more teams in contention and possibly more trades.
MLB Pipeline came out with their team rankings for prospects. The Oakland Athletics are 26th out of 30 teams. I thought they traded every player on their mlb roster that was worth anything for top prospects. Plus high draft picks. I don’t understand why they are so low.
gbs42
The A’s have done a terrible job recently of talent evaluation, trading good players for bad prospects. I’m guessing ownership is a large part of the problem.
YankeesBleacherCreature
They also went for quantity over quality in trades. Some of their lower-level lottery tickets will take time to develop. They’ll move up in rankings soon.
SalaryCapMyth
I was nervous at first when the Braves traded for Olson and gave up Langeliers. Strong catchers are much less common than strong first baseman and especially with d’Arnaud not getting any younger but that trade is looking better and better. Especially with the trade and signing of Murphy.
Langeliers can still prove he deserves a big league roll but he’s going on 26.
BrianStrowman9
Can I get a big league roll with extra butter?
JackStrawb
@LouWhitakerHOF Agreed. The point should be to make it as interesting as possible to fans, not to streamline the decision-making on behalf of teams, most of which are concerned primarily with their bottom lines.
Captain-Judge99
I like the trading deadline where it was, like July 31st, at 3pm. This dope on a rope(Manfred) is really helping the game continue to be ruined. A pitching clock and the ghost runner is so stupid, it’s just the commissioner continuing to ruin the tradition of this beautiful game. Smh
Samuel
Injuries by teams overextending players are what’s ruining the game.
The solution is simple – limit the amount of transactions a team can make each season. Pitchers won’t be throwing their arms out, and batters / fielders will play under control.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Lol tradition has been long gone since they abolished homeplate collisions. Baseball was the last pro team sport without a clock. I do enjoy the faster pacing of games now. The players themselves agreed to the ghost runner. My hot take for the next CBA? Four less regular season games for playoffs expansion.
JoeBrady
About 100% agree. Manfred has made some very good changes. My only (small) disagreement would be to reduce the regular season by 8 games in exchange for more playoffs. How many people will actually go to an early-April against KC, unless they have season tickets?
SocoComfort
Seriously expand the playoffs again? The playoffs helps make MLB unique. MLB and college football have diminished their regular seasons already.
Captain-Judge99
@JoeBrady- Playoffs? Playoffs? My Yankees would just be happy to win another game!!
Dr2022
Will they? Only thing I can guarantee is that they will win 60 this year
JoeBrady
Keep the deadline as it is. There really isn’t much difference in the standing between 7/31 & 8/15? LAA was the biggie. Maybe the NYY, Dbacks, and Padres have fallen out, but they weren’t major buyers anyway.
And it won’t affect the calculus in any case. If you had 19 teams competing for the players of 11 teams, you will 16 teams competing for the players of 14 teams.
You will have more teams willing to trade, but less teams looking to acquire.
Captain-Judge99
@YBC- taking tradition away from the game is a big problem. I feel like I’m watching a different sport then baseball. Let’s bring baseball back, not destroy it like your favorite commissioner is doing! Smh
Dr2022
Mannford is all about getting rid of every tradition left in baseball. It’s all about making money for the owners, that’s it. That is what he’s there for.
JackStrawb
@Dr2022 Even small things, like blurring the distinction between NL and AL in how MLB dot com shows stats, seem part of the bizarre effort to eradicate tradition.
Dr2022
Yes, quite true. and what happened to the slider, now they call it a sweeper
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
My only advice to Manfred for improving the game is just add more cheerleaders, man.
SocoComfort
@Ignorant Under Manfred we will get the sisters of perpetual indulgence as the cheerleaders.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Those weren’t the cheerleaders I had in mind, but I see your point.
Old York
Get rid of the trade deadline completely. Let teams trade throughout the year, no matter what day it is. We’ve already destroyed what baseball was, especially with the Little League nonsense of putting a runner on 2nd base in extras so why not allow teams to trade for a player while they’re in the playoffs?
metzfan
that’s moronic. no sport allows trades while you were in the playoffs. you get there with the team you have after a certain point. whether they move the trade deadline a week or two is one thing but getting rid of it all together is stupid. then teams would collude and trade their best player with two games left to a playoff team with the assumption that he would be traded right back to them after the season
or teams would help their friends win championships
DBH1969
Another solution for the ghost runner is just do away with extra innings, or a max of 12 innings. Nothing wrong with a tie system.
YankeesBleacherCreature
That would be a nightmare for tie-breaker games scheduling and starting the playoffs on-time.
Dr2022
Another solution for the ghost runner is to bring it in 11th inning rather than the 10th. One extra inning of a ball game is not that onerous.
metzfan
Plenty wrong. that’s not baseball and nobody wants to go to a game where nobody wins
Dr2022
You would, if you are a Yankee fan these days lol

Samuel, the government is NOT taking over everyone’s life, that is Orwellian mythology. He was grossly and profoundly wrong. What is taking over everyone’s life is this gadget that I’m holding in my hand. No, not that. 😉
Information from lord knows where in a completely unsubstantiated or thought through way is ubiquitous and constant. THAT is control and we have complicity accepted it.
The government does NOTHING about this because we are a free democracy. That means that the evil and stupid get the same platform as the good and intelligent people who are STILL in the majority in this country.
The problem is the lazy, miserable people are the easiest audience for the influencers. It’s comical to call the megaphonic morons influencers but that’s what they are.
And here we are.
Samuel
whyhayzee;
Actually I deleted my post, but I’ll say this…..
Am older. Was talking to some parents (at different times) whose children are now in their late-20’s early 30’s. Their children graduated public schools where “they weren’t taught anything”. They were committed and went on to Beauty Schools, Trade Schools and Technical Schools and are making nice livings.
The public schools are run by the Department of Education. To get funding those schools have to teach what’s mandated. In the same way federal agencies are telling business what to train people on, what language / behavior is “appropriate”. Etc. I’ve had friends that removed their children from the public schools and sent them to private schools for decades because they were basically telling their children what “rights” they had, and that their parents were not teaching them the right “values”. Most of those kids grew up to be independent in their thinking, and able go into multiple vocations and be successful. (Have had 4 families in my building that removed their children from public schools when they found out what they were being taught – none of whom are overly religious or political.)
As for the smartphones – yes, it’s finally 1984 or Atlas Shrugged or Metropolis or Brave New World. The Silicon Valley people are tied directly into the Federal Government – they get tax subsidies and contracts (Amazon makes billions a year doing work for the CIA – the same owner owns the Washington Post which publishes slanted /planted stories that are picked up by media that can’t afford their own reporters, and disseminated to the public).
Hope you read this before it’s deleted.
Let’s get back to baseball!

Samuel, as a former public school teacher, my math curriculum was initially driven by a consortium of math teachers until schools and states became obsessed with inter and intra competition. That happened because rating organizations spring up like weeds to provide information for the realty profession and help home prices grow exponentially.
Then the big boys got their hands even more on standardized testing and basically took control of the curriculum. Meanwhile, parents became obsessed with colleges and bragging rights. And college costs grew exponentially.
I can tell you I had complete autonomy in the classroom, no one told me how to teach, what to say, etc. But it was not my first career, so you weren’t going to keep me from doing the best possible job, test scores by damned.
The people who do actual work, sometimes known as blue collar, who had me as a teacher, did not suffer any lack of opportunity. The ones who worked in the classroom are doing well now. In fact, they fix my broken stuff, and I pay them what they charge, gladly.
There is a lot of mythology about schools out there and much comes from the students, often the ones who aren’t working and later wind up wondering what went wrong. I’ve heard much truth and much more fabrication over the years when I was in fact there to see it myself.
Samuel
whyhayzee;
I respect your points. But for decades both high schools and colleges have been readying students for some sort of state sponsored tests, so they can hang a banners out stating things like “88% of out students finished…..blah blah blah”….so they can get more funding and keep their jobs.
The sad situation I see today from so many young adults is that they can’t think. One college teacher told me years ago that she couldn’t find any “critical thinking” (her words) from students anymore. They all wrote what they thought she wanted so they could get a grade, a diploma, and a good paying job. Another long-time college teacher/ department head said that businesses and industries in the area were complaining to them after hiring their former students, that in turn had to be given rudimentary classes to do the simplest part of jobs. While they were totally lost when they had to figure something out on their own.
–
I was talking to an older black guy the other day about the movie ‘Malcom X’ that Spike Lee made. Kids were walking around after seeing it with hats that had an “X” on top along with an attitude. They took the side of the people that murdered him…..but didn’t know it. We had a nice laugh over that.
What we both agreed on is that couple of generations now know little, have no perspective, and cannot think. But they go to their smartphones and believe whatever is written by the popular sites. Along those lines medical professionals have been having major problems for decades where patients look up something that gives the background of an issue, but the patients cannot differentiate if that fits what they ae suffering from, and often argue with their doctors about the course of treatment they want to put them on…..not understanding that each human body reacts differently to exercise, medications, diet, etc. If WebMD displays in on their screen……
whyhayzee
Problem solving and decision making are the two skills we all MUST have. Those can take a lifetime to hone, but you must start working on them immediately. My rules for life are 1. Show up and 2. Do your work. It really is that simple.

@Samuel @whyhazee Thank you for modeling constructive interaction technique on social media. For us to survive as a society we need to be able to have polite conversations again that don’t instantly devolve into insults and name calling. Just being nicer on social media can actually move the needle, well at least it can’t hurt.
JoeBrady
“They all wrote what they thought she wanted so they could get a grade”
-I ran into that. You have two processes that are contradictory-Love of learning v getting a good grade. I needed a 3.60 GPA to get into a combined BBA/MBA program, so I did what I did best. I played the teachers. Too many are a bit vain and dogmatic. I couldn’t ignore that.
“and often argue with their doctors about the course of treatment”
Doctors and science are not always right. It didn’t take me one minute to know the original food pyramid was probably exactly the opposite of what it should be, and 8 glasses of water 8x a day was hokum. I had to explain to my doctor why I wanted a C-Reactive protein test as part of my annual physical.

My rules for life are 1. Show up

That’s an old saying, “90% of getting ahead is just showing up”
Off-topic, but I spent at least an hour last Saturday watching guys framing a new house across the street. They probably (almost definitely) had more of a workout in one day than I get in a week.
They worked as a team with one guy cutting (with great precision) and 3-4 guys climbing ladders with sheets of plywood on the heads.
At the risk of sounding biased, I prefer Mexicans doing work like this.

Can I get an Alleluia?
We to learn the art of discussion and debate. The Far left were the first ones to cancel people, particularly on college campuses. The Far Right has less interest in politics, but just like everything else, it took 5 minutes to catch on. Now the Far Right will cancel almost anyone. I’m definitely right of center, but okay, you made your point, it is okay to go back to drinking Bud Light (actually, it was never okay to drink that swill, but still…)
And now kids are getting failed or kicked out of school because they don’t drink the kool-aid on trans. So five minutes from now, the right will be kicking kids out of school for advocating for trans.
Disclaimer-It is still okay to ostracize Yankee fans.
JoeBrady
Then the big boys got their hands even more on standardized testing
============================
If you don’t have standardized testing, how can you tell how well the kids are doing? Especially in math. I don’t care how you teach, but I do care about the outcomes.
And not just within the US. We should have global standards for math, but a global test. If we expect to maintain our status, then we must ensure that our kids have a better education. If Asia and Europe are scoring 90 in geometry, for example, and we are scoring 80, then we have a problem.

Ties are terrible. The “ghost runner” is fine IMO, it immediately creates instant drama and action and the potential for runs to be scored. Only fools want to see games go 16-18 innings due to lack of offense where less than 15% of the paid attendance is remaining. Those tools are on their porches daily yelling at kids to “get off their lawn”.

Trade deadline is fine where it is. If they want to go back and add a secondary trade deadline before Sept 1st I would be okay with that as well.

Dear gosh, I can’t wait until this political garbage of the followers of the former “president” (lowercase and quotation marks for sure) becomes extinct. So sickening that we all can’t enjoy the simple things in life because of that crowd. But of course, you can’t bring uneducated to anything that requires civility. There’s a reason that many places are closed to trailer trash and ghetto people. Sorry to sound like a snob on this, especially since I grew up in ‘da hood’ but I’m sick of the most ignorant people in the country having so much clout due to those sheep following the loudest blowhard member of the Lucky Sperm Club – and none of them seeing the ironic paradox in that. And your comment says a lot about you with a fitting username, flaming bag of poop.
Trying to be divisive on a message board is so weird.

Dear gosh.. can’t wait until this political garbage of the followers of our current president (sic), (lowercase and quotation marks for sure) becomes extinct.

The Mets should (should) know already whether there’s a likely bridge between what Alonso wants and what they’re willing to offer him. He’s clearly worth 4/100m at this point, for 2024-2027, his age 30-33 seasons, and he’s clearly NOT worth the deals Freeman got, or Goldy, or Matt Olson, which were all in the 22m to 27m range, nor is Alonso worth the deals those three got in terms of the ages those deals took those players to.
It shouldn’t be difficult to find the middle ground between 4/100m and 6/162, 5/130m, and 8/168m (iirc), which suggests that Alonso is looking for a deal far above the current market for star or near-star 1Bman. That’s fine, but if they can’t get something done fairly early in the 2023-24 offseason, the Mets taking the offseason to deal him makes all the sense in the world, albeit in the context of what they’re doing with the 2024 season.
Will they sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Julio Urias and aim for the 2024 postseason with a top rotation and an average offense, or are they actually punting? If they’re punting, then they need Alonso in order to maintain some consistency and star power, but they also need to trade him for prospects who might be useful on the next winning Mets team.
Interesting situation, either way. If they were willing to go to 8/162m for Nimmo they might see the extra years as an annuity of sorts, but it also means they’ll be paying Nimmo, Lindor, and Alonso a combined $75m a year for their dotages. Add in penalties and that’s close to $150m a year for a backup MI and occasional DH, a 4th OFer, and a platoon DH for 2028-2030. One more reason the Lindor trade-and-sign was foolishness for how it hamstrings the club during the latter half of the deal.

Used to be long ago (for those outside the borders of USA) when you met in your travels an American , for the post part you know what they stand for. Democracy freedom decency equal rights.
Now … your country is so divided , and angry we don’t know what an American is or stands for anymore. Many of you hate your own country it seems.
Politics mirror third world. Fastest way to jail ? Become president. Once you’re out of power other party puts you in jail lol
Really a shame.
Divided country can be conquered.

I love this country, but we might be too stupid to be saved. I got lucky that I grew up in the Bronx. Some had a little more, and some had a little less, but it didn’t matter. We had a good local public school, so even the kids that didn’t have a lot of interest in academics knew the king’s English and could add up their bar tab without a calculator.
IMHO, it was when kids no longer needed to have a job in HS that things went sideways.

You yourself are now contributing to how decisive on this message board because you are concerned about being divisive. I guess that’s what you feel you should stand up for on message boards right? You just decided to ad on the element of hypocrisy.

Well, hopefully I’m ok with clarifiying that I’m not a fan of the current regime either.
And that I’m actually an Independent Centrist.
I personally feel that it’s time to move past these last two individuals and have some new leadership. I’m tired of both sides catering to the worst of both sides just to get votes from the far sides of their parties (which is mostly the most ignorant, uneducated parts of their sides).
I hope that doesn’t get deleted.

I’ve never seen a time in this country when we’ve had so many important people that are insane, enfeebled, and just plain out to lunch.

@JoeBrady
Exactly. And all we see both parties doing is take platforms and make statements that cater to the worst people of both parties. All the while, most Americans (since most of us straddle somewhere in the middle regardless of party affiliation or no party affiliation) have to deal with the aftermath when most of us don’t agree with the far sides of either party. And all these leaders do when issues arise as a result, they hide in their mansions along with the blowhard “journalists” who capitalize on this garbage as well. We’re the ones that have to deal with the problems they ignite in their garbage that appeals to the ignorant, uneducated and mentally ill. For them, it’s all about winning elections through methods trying to get every single vote, even from the most reprehnsible people of society – not about serving most Americans who truly reflect the common every day person, regardles of party affiliation, race/ethnicity, religion/life philosophy, identity, etc. For these so-called leaders (and the ratings-seeking “journalists”) it’s basically, “Well, I know I’ve got these votes secure because of party loyalty, so I need to cater the far side of my party and push for policies and say or dogwhistle the worse garbage that will secure me those votes too.”
Sadly, this is where we’re at until all of us, regardless of party affiliation, demand more from them, and stop allowing the worst people, even if they vote as we do, to be catered to. They will get none of us what we want out of America as we all beome more divided because of the small few that seem to impact/influence our leaders the most.

I would not mind moving the trade deadline back a week or two, but no more. IF you play more games before a trade deadline it might clarify who is and who is not in regarding the playoffs. But that may or may not create a better trade deadline. More potential sellers, fewer buyers and it that might make buyers less likely to buy given they know more teams are out. Why make a deal if there isn’t a ton of competition for those last playoff games? The only reason would be you feel you need to to make a deep playoff run. So some trades probably do happen. But with more sellers and fewer buyers might also make buyers offer less for what they seek, which could also slow the trade deadline down. Hard to know how it would play out, every year is different. But moving the deadline back does offer the possibility that it actually hampers, not improves the trade market. MLB wanted to move the draft back and also shrank the time they have to sign their draft picks. While MLB front offices should be able to handle all of that and a trade deadline, that would be the best reason to move it back a week or two.
