August 15: Yacabonis has elected free agency, according to the transaction log at MLB.com.
August 14: Before this evening’s win over the Pirates, the Mets reinstated Sam Coonrod from the 60-day injured list. New York placed Josh Walker on the 15-day IL to clear an active roster spot while recalling reliever John Curtiss and placing him on the 60-day IL in a 40-man move. Additionally, New York sent righty Jimmy Yacabonis outright to Triple-A Syracuse after he was designated for assignment over the weekend.
Coonrod returned to throw a scoreless inning of relief in his season debut. The right-hander had missed the entire season after suffering a severe lat strain in Spring Training. Claimed off waivers from the Phillies in February, Coonrod is attempting to secure a bullpen spot in Queens going into 2024. He’s eligible for arbitration through ’25.
Curtiss was diagnosed with a loose body in his throwing elbow, tweets Tim Britton of the Athletic. The 60-day IL placement officially ends his season. The 30-year-old righty has made 15 appearances for New York, working to a 4.58 ERA across 19 2/3 innings. Curtiss missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s eligible for arbitration twice more but could be non-tendered at year’s end.
Yacabonis has worked 13 2/3 frames over seven outings. He’s allowed 10 runs while working mostly low-leverage relief. A journeyman who has appeared in parts of six MLB seasons with five different clubs, he’ll have the right to test minor league free agency by virtue of multiple career outrights.

Loss?
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Now it’s changed. Don’t blame you for assuming a loss.

The headache Yacabonis is gone for good. Thank goodness. It’s a shame about Curtiss, he could’ve been decent.

Where’d all the Mets fans go?

I can’t speak for anyone else but myself and tbh I can’t waste my time. I have a 6yr old a 3yr and a 25 yr old plus a wife 10 years younger than me and a 24/7 business to run. I will always be a Mets fan no matter what (I must be a masochist) but I refuse to waste my time, I read and keep up with baseball but to sit and spend hours watching meaningless games for me is just not smart.
That is no way a knock on others-just my prerogative. All love.

The selloff very much felt like 1977 all over again. When the Mets traded Seaver and Kingman they were 11.5 games behind the Phillies and it felt like they were cashing in their chips for the season. The trades were more about the Mets future than that season. Prospects and younger players came back, but they went from an 86 win team in 1976, to a 64 win season in 1977 (playing .326 after the trades).
Well, 1978 followed with 66 wins, 1979 with 63 wins, and they stayed under 70 wins through 1983 ( including playing .398 ball for the shortened 1981 season).
Also their attendance went from 4th in the NL in 1976 down towards 7th-9th-10th in the NL, bottoming out at LAST (12th of 12) in the NL in 1983.
Free agency was around, and the owners were cheapskates even before the Wilpons.
But it is just ugly to think that trading “proven for prospects” killed the franchise for 6 seasons. It took high draft picks and home-growns like Strawberry Gooden Dykstra Backman et al. To turn it around.
Much like the Astros went through from 2009-2015 with losing to the worst in baseball some years while grabbing high drafts and stocking with all the young players Correa-Altuve et al. Who took them to the 2017 WS.
So the Marlins fans posting have to enjoy this time after working their farm system to have this season. Orioles fans, too.

You forgot that Frank Cashen made a very unpopular trade that landed him Ron Darling and Walt Terrell (who later turned into Howard Johnson). That was for Lee Mazzillee, which sent your Mets fans into an uproar, which Cashen proved he was right in the end.
Great that you mentioned the late 70s and the attendance. Sometimes it seems like many Mets fans bash others teams’ fan bases like they either don’t know or want to pretend the Mets attendance wasn’t what it was in the late 70s and early 80s – specifically 1979 and 1981.

I actually responded as a Mets fan earlier but moderator deleted my comment. I thought it was a respectful comment but I did call myself a name that didnt sit well with the mods about being a Mets fan so maybe that’s what did it LOL.
My point was im here, I can’t talk for other Mets fans but what I do know is I’m 46 with a 6yr old a 3yr old a 25 yr old plus a wife 10 years younger than me and a 24/7 business that runs non stop. If the Mets aren’t playing meaningful games then I’m not watching. Way better things to do in life than sit and do nothing while watching others do something that will equal nothing. I will always be a Mets fan-just not an emotional one.
Edp007
Yup no emotion in that post. We hear ya

Maybe just a bit LOL but who’s paying attention right?

At least you admit this. All the ones I’m taking a jab at are the ones that talk like they’re all-knowing and 100% dedicated, but when the team fails, they’re gone…along with their dedication that they don’t like being called out for. And the funny thing is that they’re the ones that yap the most on these boards…and are the ones that dish it, but can’t take it…and can’t own up when they’re wrong…and are quick to block any poster that doesn’t fall into their delusional fandom.
Where are those Mets “fans” now? Gone! No surprise here.

Hey Fish Face, I still wear my Mets gear out in public, still watch the Mets daily on MLBTV, went down to Petco Park for the series against the Padres in July. I tell everybody that I’m a true Mets fan and support the team whether they win 101 games like last year or sink down to the bottom this year. Being a true fan is a humbling experience at times; you celebrate the highs, then take alternate swigs of beer and Maalox when your team sucks.
