The Mets announced to reporters, including Tim Britton of The Athletic, that right-hander Tyson Miller has been designated for assignment. His roster spot will go to righty Sean Reid-Foley, whose selection was reported earlier today. Righty Reed Garrett was optioned to open a spot for Reid-Foley on the active roster.
Miller, 28, has donned quite a few jerseys in the past year. He finished the 2022 season with the Rangers but went to the Brewers via a waiver claim in November. He was then traded to the Dodgers in July before coming to the Mets earlier this month via a waiver claim. In between all of that, he’s managed to throw 13 1/3 major league innings for three different teams this year with a 5.40 earned run average.
He’s spent more time in the minors, with all of those clubs having used him as optional pitching depth this year. In 30 combined innings for the Triple-A teams of the Brewers, Dodgers and Mets, he has a 3.30 ERA, 26.8% strikeout rate and 8.7% walk rate.
Miller is in his final option year and will therefore be out of options in the 2024 season. Perhaps he wasn’t in the long-term plans in Queens and has been nudged out of the picture. The Mets are out of contention and will likely be using the rest of their schedule to evaluate players for jobs on next year’s club, which apparently won’t include Miller.
With the trade deadline long gone, the Mets will have no choice but to put Miller on waivers in the coming days. He has a very limited major league track record of just 15 appearances but has clearly intrigued teams around the league with his minor league results, based on how often he’s been shuffled around. Although he’ll be out of options next year, he could be kept in the minors as depth for the rest of this season. He has a previous career outright and would be eligible to reject another such assignment and elect free agency in the event he were to clear waivers.

I wonder if this Sean Reid Foley is any relation to John Ford Coley.
AgeeHarrelsonJones
No, he’s related to former MLB player Timothy John Foli and country western star Red Foley.
Florida=WorldsBiggestToilet
I had to look Dan England and John Ford Coley.
Quite the homely lesbian couple.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #InEpplerIsGone!!!!
I didn’t see enough of Miller but he didn’t seem that bad from what I saw
geofft
Its not about good or bad at this juncture. These guys are all marginal, at best.
Its about auditioning all of these marginal arms in order to determine who to keep and who to cut. For all we know, Miller’s demotion may actually mean the Mets have already decided to keep him.
The Mets are going to need roster spots for the 5 players currently on the 60-day IL, plus any free agents they bring in.
raisinsss
LFG will need to see him for at least two more innings to decide whether he’s the next Zack Britton or Drew Smith.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #InEpplerIsGone!!!!
@raisinsss you do know that these guys pactice certain stuff in Triple A instead of throwing the best pitch in certain situations right? ERA is not meaningless down there but these guys are trying to perfect their pitches. I dont know if Miller is good or not, I have to see more of him. I’ve seen enough of Drew Smith to know that hes one of the worst relievers in baseball. Thats the difference
JackStrawb
Miller? Kept? A 27 yo former college stud whose MLB ERA is over 7, who gets beaten up in AAA, gives up more than a hit an inning w/ a AAA ERA around 4.66, iirc, 4 BB per 9, 1.4 HR per 9… gah.
So, yeah, actually. Based on extreme luck on fly balls w/ Milwaukee this year, in 25 ip, the Mets probably did decide to keep him.
It’s a perfect Mets move, and then when he goes all Nogosek on them in 2024, they’ll be, oh noes, whuh happen??
Buzz Killington
How’s Cohen gonna react when the Rays claim him?
Keithyim
I’ll go with ‘not at all’
JackStrawb
Oh, joy. The return of SRF:
10 BB in 16 AAA innings, 4 HR in those 16 ip.
So pleased Eppler decided to go with optionability as his primary criteria for a bullpen, and that Cohen decided not to part with any of that Correa cash he saved on solid bullpen arms. Schmuckishness prevailed.

It’s the Mets relief bum of the week(or daily, lately)! Never ending burn and churn of arsonists in the pen. And why the hell did they send Lucchesi back down to Syracuse?
icantstandyous
Eppler is the reason why this team is where they are. But Cohen apparently trusts him with the keys still. When will uncle Stevie move on from ineptitude.

My guess is this off season, assuming the Mets can find a GM who’ll accept the job

Have they dfa’d Eppler yet?
Michael Chaney
He’s pitched in 15 games in his career but still managed to play for five different teams. That’s actually kind of impressive

Man, earlier in the year and for the last few years, after a few hours, Mets fans were posting nonstop. Now, for the last several articles, for the most part, very low numbers of posts…and many of the loyal, dedicated Mets fans are gone. I’m almost tempted to call certain names out who have disappeared.
nottinghamforest13
They’re probably embarrassed because they realize they have one of the few GMs who makes Kim Ng appear semi-competent.
MarlinsFanBase
Why should they feel embarrassed? They only root for a team that spent more money than any other team in MLB history by a long margin…and very likely finish under .500…and they only boasted and made guarantees about their team succeeding and winning a championship, but may finish in either 4th or 5th in their division…and they bashed away on certain other teams who are still in the playoff hunt…and their team spent more money than the combined payrolls of many 3-team combination of current playoff contenders – which includes nearly guaranteed playoff teams in Baltimore and Tampa, and more than the combined payrolls of the three playoff hopefuls in Cincinatti, Miami and Arizona.
So, what’s there to be embarrassed about?
Roll
I will admit im one of them that hasnt spoken much because ill be honest i havent been able to keep track of the games as well and dont have much to add. I think i spoke on 2 maybe 3 threads in the last 2 weeks.
With work lately being undermanned ( please data science and report creators apply so i can sleep again ) and them now adding some physical therapy as an effort to help with complications from cancer surgery just dont have the free time other than see headlines from the phone on bathroom runs.
The only thing i have seen is they caught another mets pitcher in the minors with sticky stuff, the usual carousel of mets relievers, and vogelsong still dh (even as a die hard mets fan there is no defense to keep him there at this point). And as i can see from earlier comments LFGMets is still mad that Drew Smith wont let him be his son (LFG Smith?).
Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong this season. I have nothing but blame for the hitting coach …i thought he would keep the same things Chavez had done but EVERYONE on the team is hitting worse except for Alvarez the only common denominator is the hitting coach
Also doesnt help they had their full rotation what 1 or 2 times through. Even if you exclude quintana, maybe handful of times through? Which puts enormous strain on the bullpen especially when your top regular starting pitchers are a rookie in Senga and Carrasco othat only kept his job because they didnt want to replace 4 starting pitchers. .
I still defend what the mets did in the offseason rotation wise because at that time you needed 3 starting pitchers and you had to pick up an ace. If verlander was healthy the whole season i think he would have done better and would have made a bigger difference especially when you compare the other 2 big names in Degrom and Rodon that were injury prone and the team would have been worse off and for longer. And they lost diaz which would have pushed everyone back a spot in the bullpen and had defined roles better (shoot they kept switching otto and robertson it seemed everyother day to close with the other the setup guy). I will say it again they needed to keep bassit he was the true ace of the team last season and held it down … bassitt and senga could have kept the team in the hunt atleast and around 500 while the rotation became fully healthy again.
Hopefully im back to a set schedule or atleast handle these new wrinkles again after labor day and ill be back discussing mets by then with yall.

@Roll
Well, we’ll give you benefit of the doubt. Hopefully you don’t pull off anything like Canosucks, who seems to always have things going on when the Mets are doing bad, but then everything clears up when the Mets are doing well. Essentially, to use some of his stuff, when the Mets are struggling, @Canosucks “has a life”, but when the Mets are doing well, he’s all over these boards,
I will refrain from mentioning all of the other regulars who have disappeared recently…no matter how tempted I am to mention them
And bash LFG all you want, but I give him respect for still being around…unilke the many so-called Mets fans who have bailed on their team after yapping nonstop when the Mets were doing well. No respect there, especially the ones that like to bash, but can’t be around when the team is hurtin’ bad…laughably bad.
nottinghamforest13
There’s a weird cultural fascination which leads people to believe a job is not worth doing unless every moment of that job spiritually fulfills you. So many people sitting at home because they would need to commit effort to leave the house.
MarlinsFanBase
@nottinghamforest13
That best describes fandom for a lot of them. When it’s not going well for the team they dedicated time to and professed loyal and undying love for when the team was doing well, it’s not worth for them to support them during those rough times. The Mets Board has shown that very well now.
Where are all those Mets fans that have been here the last few years? Gone! But they’ll be back when there appears to be the slightest glimmer of someone filling the tank for the bandwagon. That’s when you’ll see @Canosucks and the many others I’m wanting to name, will come back. Sorry, but none of them can say shizzle about us Marlins fans that are on this site. At least we’re here during thick and thin for our team.

@Roll. I agree with you 100% about the hitting coach and Vogelbach
