The Marlins made some roster moves today, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. Right-hander Tommy Nance has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and infielder/outfielder Garrett Hampson recalled from Triple-A. In corresponding transactions, outfielder Avisaíl García has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a left hamstring strain and left-hander Ryan Weathers has been optioned. There was already a vacancy on the 40-man roster for Nance’s activation.
Nance, 32, began the season on the injured list due to a strain in his throwing shoulder, an injury that has kept him away from the major league team until today. Now that he’s back, he’ll look to build off a solid showing last year. He tossed 43 2/3 innings for the Marlins, allowing 4.33 earned runs per nine frames. He issued walks at a high rate of 10.7% but also struck out 29.1% of batters faced and kept the ball on the ground at a 46.4% clip.
For Garcia, 32, this continues an incredible frustrating season. He’s only been able to play 37 games this year, missing almost all of the May-July portion of the season due to a back injury. When healthy enough to take the field, he’s hit just .185/.241/.315. It’s the second straight disappointing season for the outfielder since signing a four-year, $53MM contract with the Marlins, as he hit .224/.266/.317 in 2022 while being limited by various injuries to 98 games. He still has another two years and $29MM left on that contract.

Avisail Garcia is better for the Fish when he’s not playing.

So true.

Man, I feel bad about my immediate reaction when he came up hobbled running down the line last night. I’ve never done something like that with anyone. Obviously you never want to see someone get hurt…I guess my immediate thought wasnt about the injury more than thinking about not having him on the roster for a while
Rsox
While it is not usually something a small market team like the Marlins can afford to do, they may just be better off taking the “L” and eating the remainder of Garcia’s contract
MarlinsFanBase
It’s truly at that point. With De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez earning the playing time at the corners, and Jazz having improved in CF as the season has gone along, there is no playing time for Avi Garcia to do his routine 0-for games. It’s time to move on, or hire an investigator to track what PED Avi was using before and leak it to MLB to see if they can get him suspended. With this situation, the next part of this situation is Avi being disgruntled because of lack of playing time, so he starts being a problem in the clubhouse.

It never made sense to sign him to a multi-year deal aside from being some bizarre consulation prize for not signing Castellanos. That $12 million per year could definitely be better allocated elsewhere
MarlinsFanBase
True. And the biggest error was that they only needed one corner OF when they did it, but signed both Garcia and Soler. I wasnted Soler specifically and a Closer. We did two corner OFs, no Closer, and moved Sanchez out of position to CF, which threw him out of whack for a year.
Let’s see if the Marlins can find a taker. They may want to see if the Braves still want to do that Ozuna for Garcia deal.

As a fellow Red Sox fan, I mean no disrespect when I say this is an incredible revelation; stop the presses, call the hotline, tell him what he has won

You think Jazz is improving out there? I think it’s back to how it was at the beginning. It’s actually scary watching him…
MarlinsFanBase
@formerlyz
He’s improved on his routes. He’s slightly better on reading lines. But still a lot more work to do. Obviously that feces storm of a game where he didn’t help Sanchez and later ran into De La Cruz when De La Cruz was camped under the flyball, was a disaster game.
At this point, if we can’t get an upgrade out there, I would like to see what he looks like in Spring after a full offseason of working on it. However, I still prefer that the Marlins get a real CF and move Jazz to SS. I do know one thing though – I would not take Avi Garcia playing over Jazz.
Also with Jazz, if he gets hurt again next year and misses significant time again, I’m ready to move on from him. Trade him to the AL for something else in the 2024-25 offseason if Jazz misses a lot of time again next year.
And with the Marlins as a whole this offseason, it’s time to move on from not just Avi, but also Wendle and Stallings. Obvious moves at this point. Hopefully Ng is quick on those this offseason. No need to diddle around with whether to non-tender them or not. They’re no-brainers at this point, unless she can find a sucker to give her anything for them in a deal (which I doubt).

Jazz is the Anthony Davis of baseball at this point
MarlinsFanBase
That’s about as accurate as one can be. The only difference is that we know Anthony Davis can have a team built around him when he’s healthy. Jazz is looking more and more like a supporting cast player – a good and talented one, but really just supporting cast until he shows otherwise.

I believe Wendle is a free agent, and Stallings should be non-tendered. Other than them, this team is going to look drastically different next year. Fortes most likely will be back, theyll probably give 1B to Johnston in spring training with Arraez, Chisholm and Burger going around the infield, and Sanchez, De la Cruz and possibly Davis back in the outfield. Hope you guys enjoyed their “success” this year, however fleeting it may have been, theyre going to be a dumpster fire next year once Bell and Soler opt out.
MarlinsFanBase
@cuban1
With their pitching staff progressing, I wouldn’t exactly label the team a dumpster fire. Pitching can carry a team.
With the lineup, for sure Soler opts out, but I’m not sure I would bring him back eitherbecause, as much as he gives on HRs, he is an all-or-nothing guy. With Burger, although he looks like a completely different type of hitter with us than with Chicago, he is expected to be an all-or-nothing guy. You can’t have too many of those in a lineup. With Bell, if he doesn’t return, that would be a loss for sure. Jazz at SS would be a major upgrade over Wendle. Arraez is Arraez. Burger, we’ll see which player is he – our version that hits pretty consistently with HRs here and there or the Chicago version of all-or-nothing, but defensively, he’s an upgrade over Segura since he’s a legit 3B. Catching, I’m fine with Fortes continuing, but I wouldn’t mind an upgrade there. With the corner OFs, I think most of us are fine with De La Cruz and Sanchez continuing to grow at those spots. With CF, if we don’t go outside of the organization, I think most of us are fine with Davis and Dane Myers being rolled out there. The issue comes down to Avi Garcia, who clearly needs to be moved at this point because there is no rooom for him on the roster, and every time he plays, he’s taking away from our lineup by taking playing time from De La Cruz, Sanchez, or others. The only thing I can think happens if we can’t move Garcia is that he roms in RF for his defense, and Sanchez becomes our new DH after Soler signs elsewhere, but that does still hurt since Avi is clearly an automatic out four times on most nights.
Bullpen, while I’m for trying to re-sign Robertson, I’d be fine with giving Puk another run at Closer. I think he, Robertson and others may have a wacky situation this year with Stallings because I noticed after Robertson blew a couple of games after being new with the team, that there tends to be HRs given up on stupid pitches in bad locations when Stallings is behind the plate (including this season with Alcantara). I’m wondering if Stallings has decline in physical movement to the point that he’s keeping pitches up in the hitter’s zone either by design or pitchers knowing he can’t block nasty breaks. I’ve notice Stallings tends to be the Catcher when we’ve seen that with Puk, Robertson, Alcantara, and others this season…and I started watching it when I saw those blown games by Robertson because I figured he was new to the team, so having the same pattern of those being blown via HRs as we saw with the same HR-giving pattern that cost Puk his Closer job was repreated with Stallings behind the plate. I’m guessing moving Stallings changes that pattern wth pitches called and location.
We’ll see how the remainder of this season goes, and then the offseason, then next year.
cuban1
I call it a dumpster fire because this team is one of the worst offensively in almost every category. Soler is their only consistent power threat, and removing him from the lineup makes them even less threatening in the eyes of an opposing pitcher.
Are you absolutely sure pitching can carry a team? The Mets record in Jacob Degroms starts during his Mets career was 113-96 despite a 2.52 career ERA, and im pretty sure the Marlins aren’t running out 5 DeGroms in their rotation.
cuban1
Also, anyone who thinks this team is going to spend money on improvements this offseason are clearly delusional/weren’t paying attention at the deadline. Sherman said Ng would have the resources available, but the trades they made proved otherwise, it was just talk. the trades of floro, cooper and segura allowed them to get rid of 2 impending free agents and Segura who had a 2 million buyout for next year while acquiring cost controlled pitchers they assume they can fix while at the same time most of that money they freed up made up for the remainder of Bell and robertsons current year salary. Robertson is free agent while bell can and most likely will opt out to seek more money elsewhere.
MarlinsFanBase
Well, the Marlins are done,
And yesterday was another observation with Stallings behind the plate – and with Robertson trying to pitch to Stallings failing again. If Alcanatara is the only pitcher that exclusively wants Stallings to catch him, it’s seriously time to move on. It isn’t like Alcantara has had a season to write home about. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t have Stallings behind the plate for only one pitcher, who is also struggling with him this year.
MarlinsFanBase
Also, a major issue with the Marlins has been their veteran hitters don’t take much pressure away from the younger players. Soler and Bell have been the only ones that have done anything to take pressure off the younger guys. And with them, Soler is still and all-or-nothing player, and Bell has his limits, so other veterans have failed – Avi Garcia, Wendle and Stallings in particular. As much as we love the good moments and get frustrated with the down moments from Arraez, Jazz, De La Cruz, Sanchez, Fortes, eventually Burger, etc., they are still younger players in the early stages of their careers and establishing themselves as players and what they can do. They should not have the added pressure of having to come through to carry the team when there are veterans on the team getting significant playing time and affecting their playing time – like Garcia taking playing time away from Sanchez amd occassionally De Le Cruz when Garcia is healthy; Stallings taking playing time away from Fortes; Wendle being placed at SS where Jazz should be, and takes playing time away from Dane Mayers (and eventually Davis when he returns). When those veteran hitters fail, that puts more pressure on the younger guys to drive in runs, which results unsurprisingly in slumps with the younger guys, even Arraez who, at times, seems like he’s trying to turn into a run producer instead of just hitting/slapping the ball, or the effects on De La Cruz, Sanchez, Jazz and Fortes (and eventually Burger) when they have to come through in pressure situations over and over again when the vets fail.
Hopefully the Marlins get this corrected this offseason with moving on from some of the issues. It’s ridiculous to take playing time away from the younger players, then having to call on them to come through when, other than Soler and Bell, the vets can’t get the job done.

Garcia is doing an excellent “I signed a multi-year deal in my early 30’s with the Yankees” impression. A masterful performance.
MarlinsFanBase
Other than a player getting hurt in this case, I couldn’t help but think during today’s telecast when our broadcasters (Rod Allen?) said that Avi wanted to contribute to the team, that Avi was giving his biggest contribution this year by landing on the IL. The only way he can do more is be out for the season, then start hanging around some of his teammates’ wives. Let nature take its course like it did in Detroit, then Ng and Sherman will be forced to move him for anything.

Nance was absolutely filthy for the Cubs before MLB cracked down on on spider tack.
