The Mariners announced Friday that infielder Kolten Wong has cleared waivers and been released. Seattle had designated the veteran second baseman for assignment in the waning hours before the trade deadline.
That DFA officially ended a disappointing Seattle tenure. The M’s acquired Wong from the Brewers last offseason, sending Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro to Milwaukee in a change-of-scenery deal that hasn’t worked for anyone involved. Wong opened the season as the M’s second baseman but played his way to the bench with a career-worst showing.
Over 67 games, the veteran hit .165/.241/.227 with just a pair of home runs. His walk and strikeout numbers each went in the wrong direction, while his rate of hard contact plummeted by ten percentage points. Wong’s bat-to-ball skills and strike zone awareness remained slightly above-average, but he rarely made an impact when he put the ball in play.
While power has never been Wong’s strong suit, he’s topped double-digit homers on five occasions — including each of his two years in Milwaukee. He’s stolen only one base after swiping 17 last season. The Mariners have turned to rookie José Caballero as their primary second baseman of late and acquired left-handed hitting Josh Rojas as a versatile infield piece in the Paul Sewald deal.
Wong’s defense has also dropped over the past couple seasons. A two-time Gold Glove winner, he was one of the sport’s top keystone defenders at his peak. Public defensive metrics rated him well below-average last season, however. Wong said late in the year he’d been playing through a leg issue that sapped some of his mobility. That offered some hope for a defensive rebound that hasn’t really materialized. Wong logged 513 1/3 innings at second base for Seattle. Defensive Runs Saved pegged him five runs below par, while Statcast estimated him one run worse than average.
In the immediate aftermath of Wong’s DFA, reports suggested the Red Sox had engaged the M’s in trade talks. No deal came to fruition by the deadline, making a release an inevitability. Wong long surpassed the five-year service threshold which allows players to refuse a minor league assignment while retaining the guaranteed money on their contract.
Wong is playing on a $10MM option, which the Brewers had exercised before trading him. Seattle took on that money in the deal. He is due around $3.12MM through season’s end. The M’s will pay virtually all of that sum. Any team that signs Wong would owe him the prorated $720K minimum rate for time spent on the big league roster, which comes out of Seattle’s obligations.
Step over to the Angels lol
He’s a Giant
That’s baseball.
A player is finally at the end, and another player gets his baseball beginning.
It is sad at times, but it’s the natural flow of things.
So now we focus our Mariners attention on Marlowe and others like him.
That was a crushing hr last night by the kid.
Will be fun to watch the kid grow.
Yep, and that’s the charm of this game. The next Babe Ruth or Griffey Jr might be drawing near even as we speak.
He’s already here his name is shohei ohtani
The next one then…
Dude stole over 44 million dollars during his career. Should be in a Federal Prison somewhere
Call Jack Smith and complain
Give me his number and I will
I had it somewhere on my emails , but the server has been deleted , not sure was up
Never actually stole it…Someone was crazy enough to give it to him
Lifetime WAR of 21.7 with 9 years of service time. So basically 2.4 WAR per season. But he’s a thief. Ok, buddy. I hope you don’t work in law enforcement.
You’re addressing a village idiot. Wong was good for a while.
Giants please. He’s got to be better than Isan Diaz. Wong had WAR’s of 3.1 last year and 3.4 in 2021.
Take a closer look. Not only has his offensive skills tanked, he’s a hack in the field. Wong has literally no value. You’d be better off signing Rougned Odor, and that’s coming from someone who is NO fan of his.
Christian Arroyo was just DFA’d. A former Giants first round pick. I’ll take him instead. Also Jean Segura was DFA’d so lots of middle infielder’s available.
I don’t think I’d want any of them. They have Schmitt and I think he’s a far better option at 2B for regular at bats than Diaz. Neither of them is hitting though and both play stellar defense. Schmitt showed promise until the league figured out he’s essentially Javy Baez on sliders down and away. Hopefully he can adjust back and start hitting again but in any event I would much rather let him figure things out than waste any time on washed up veterans i mean for gods sake they just picked up Pollock they don’t need any more of that.
The guy has made $52 million. Does he walk away or try to catch on with another team?
He probably tries to latch on to another team, especially since he still a solid year last season. Someone will pick him up on a minor league deal, that’s all he should expect.
Release the Kolten!
Really good player before this season. Too bad.
He’ll catch on somewhere on a minor league deal. It’s a no-risk pickup to see if Wong can get back to anything like his value before this disastrous season.
Come back to the Cardinals. Donovan is out, Gorman has a hurt back. Edman is SS.
Somebody is bound to make Wong right!
Come back to the Cardinals
Bosox.
Sure. Two Wongs will make it right
Sox also know a song.
Two wongs makes you a movie star…
That was the idea but a deal didn’t come together and the Sox pivoted to Luis Urias instead. Maybe sign him to a minor league deal and stash at Worcester for a while and see if there is anything left in the tank
They released his brother, Kean, earlier this year. So I guess you could say two Wongs don’t make a right
Wong’s mind ain’t right. Must be thinking of girls or something just as suffocating.
The Mariners traded Kean to the White Sox, and Chicago released him a few days ago. I never have been able to find out who or what the Mariners traded him for.
Even the great Baseball-Reference lists Wong as be traded for, and I quote, “unknown compensation.”
That’s wild.
It’s classified you don’t have the proper clearance.
Always a mystery with the M’s why they take this long to get going. Only to say that given last years results you had to know that something was going to give. Seems to be their finally playing a lot more loose, could be this pending release of players who were non- performers along with a resupply has reenergize the team. I’m expecting they will continue on their winning ways, and make a playoff run.
I’m with you, Lee.
World Series here we come.
You’re right we won’t know the exact reasons why they, almost every sgl hitter except JK, struggled at the onset but I have my theory. It was not just one thing-
I think the All-Star game being held in Seattle was the main culprit behind so many of our hitters making terrible swing decisions. They were pressing, trying too hard for lack of a better term. Here was their one chance in their careers to make an AS team in their home city. Baseball is like the game of golf in that regard- if your expectations are too high or if you’re desperate to do well- you’ll never meet that goal.
I also think the extreme cold in the first 5-6 weeks of the season impacted our hitters. So many balls died at the fence or on the track. You’re kidding yourself if you think the ball flies the same in cold heavy marine air. Again- I’ll use golf as an analogy: the ball flies about one club (10 yds or so) less here at Pebble Beach than it does in warmer thinner air of Dallas or the Midwest. I know that for a fact- I work at Pebble Beach where Golfers come from all over the Nation. I’m reminded of that on a daily basis
As usual, ayrbhoy sums it up perfectly.
The good news is that we are finally out of the blight and starting to really roll.
Baseball – ya gotta love it.
Startling. Wong was a solid 3 win player in 2021-22.
It was a wong move.
And here I thought you pass away, if that’s you Frank Zappa.
Just wasn’t feeling the vibe in Seattle. Wong throughout his career has had mental hurdles to overcome and would be very streaky as a result of that. When it was bad, the fielding was bad, hitting bad, baserunning bad, etc. Just needs some positive momentum and he’s fine.
He’s a good player. Did good in STL and for a few seasons in milw. He went to Seattle and his career went to die. Must be something in the Pacific Northwest waters. where players go there and they turn to crap
How about feeding the baseball junkies? This shutout of the Angeles was something hey? Now we can expect a 14 game winning streak next, right?
Article says trade hasn’t workout out for anyone.. not true.. Abraham Toro has played well in an albeit limited and minor role/being shipped up/down to and from AAA, surprised he hasn’t been given more opportunity with Turangs initial struggles as well as now Owen Miller has been in a month+ long slump, anyway seems Toro could be the ‘guy’ from that trade
