The White Sox acquired veteran outfielder Tyler Naquin from the Brewers in exchange for cash, the teams announced. Naquin will head to the White Sox’ Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte and is expected to be in the Knights’ lineup tomorrow, tweets Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.
[Related: How to acquire players after the trade deadline]
Naquin, 32, was eligible to be traded by virtue of the fact that he hasn’t been on a 40-man roster or major league injured list at any point this season. He signed a minor league pact with Milwaukee back in March and has spent the entire season to date with their Triple-A affiliate in Nashville. The seven-year big league veteran has slashed .284/.333/.432 with six homers in 160 plate appearances this season. He’s been on and off the active roster a few times due to injury — most recently some minor shoulder troubles.
A first-round pick back in 2012, Naquin made his big league debut in 2016 with Cleveland. He’s logged Major League time each season since, also making stops in Cincinnati and Queens, hitting at a .264/.318/.444 clip in 1811 MLB plate appearances. Naquin has experience in center field but is better suited to play a corner. He’s a left-handed hitter who’s been held to a meager .210/.272/.339 slash against lefties but has tagged righties for a much heartier .274/.326/.468 slash in his career.
While Naquin won’t immediately jump onto Chicago’s big league roster, the uncertain state of the South Siders’ outfield could get him a look at some point. Top prospect Oscar Colas struggled considerably in right field early in the season before being optioned to Triple-A, and he hasn’t improved in a month since his recall. Dating back to July 4, Colas has hit .229/.253/.289 with a 29.9% strikeout rate and 3.4% walk rate in 87 plate appearances. The White Sox do have some outfield alternatives in Triple-A who are already on the 40-man roster — Clint Frazier, Adam Haseley — but both have been in the minors for more than a month now.
If the Sox ultimately feel there’s no spot on the big league roster for Naquin, they could still trade him a second time this month. They’d likely only pick up cash in return, as is common in post-deadline swaps of this nature.
I’m sure he’ll be sleeping on the bench during the game
Sox got Naquin for the bench.
Jose Ramirez got Nyquil for Anderson.
Not only can Tim Anderson not hit, he also can’t take a damn hit!
Guy got dropped like a sack of potatoes from the obese Jose Ramirez lmao
Please, go tell Jose Ramirez to his face that you think he’s “obese”.
How is Jose Ramirez Obese? You don’t know the definition if you think he is lol. There are plenty of a lot chunkier dudes then JRam in the game.
If he’s obese then Vogelbach is Sally Struthers
At 5’9″ 190 lbs, Ramirez is technically overweight, but not obese. Keep in mind also that BMI does not account for muscle mass.
Who is obese.
If you watched the fight as it happened, which I did, TA landed a couple of pretty good punches to Ramirez’s noggin. He just got lucky, swinging wildly, and caught TA on the right side of his face. But T A just popped right back up and was ready to give Ramirez more. But WGN, who used to carry cubs games and are still cubs fans, only reported that TA got knocked down. Sad when even the local media got it wrong because they were too busy watching the cubs game.
The blood pressure/ scale machine at Walmart said I’m obese. Made me laugh.
I resemble that remark!!!
If you watch the fight as it happened, you’ll actually see TA didn’t really LAND anything, except on his backside. Watched it live and the fight was hilarious.
Ramirez has multiple 20-20 seasons, I don’t think you understand body composition
PEDs will do that to a young lad
Wait- both can be true
Yeah it looked more like TA lost his balance. And despite Jose’s protestations, he triggered the whole brouhaha with the poke to TAs temple. Whatevs. Fun fun. And how do the Pennant race Guards benefit from a fight with the hapless White Sox? Lose-lose- 2 games in the series plus the 4 games in suspensions. And now they’ve let the same hapless team live rent free in their noggin.
If you started getting targetted ads on your phone from Walmart for blood thinning medication, would you still laugh? 🙂
Yes
@avenger
Comon avenger: you’re usually better than that. You usually state facts. Don’t go down to Dumpster Divin’s level.
BTW Dumpster – – what team is dumpster divin now??? LOL!!!
PEDS don’t make you look like a young Khalid El-Amin yet still be one of the better players in the game
Everybody that is claiming Ramirez is obese…
Yes, he has some chunk, but he is in great physical shape. I hear he is thinking of trying out for middleweight UFC post baseball days.
Avenger – that is just a horrible take. WGN has the same take on Anderson getting knocked out as EVERYONE… Not just a few or some.
Anderson did just the opposite of “popped” back up. He had to be helped up, and needed Grandals help to stay up. Knees were wobbly.
Here is a link showing (2:55 mark) Anderson stumbling trying to keep his legs under him.

As Chris Tucker would say, “you got the hill knocked out.”
The clown got clowned.
Yeah, I am not sure how anybody can objectively look at the fight and not see that it was a clean knockdown. One could argue it was a lucky connection, but the point remains that Anderson got hit hard. In UFC terms I think it was a 10-8 round, if not a knockout.
Welcome to the train wreck…
SELL THE TEAM!! This organization is a complete disaster from top to bottom
Don’t blame La Russa for drinking now
La Russia is welcome to drink with White Sox nation any time now
Palehose 72: Of all the garbage the Sox have picked up, at least I’ve heard of Naquin. To Hahn, this is the equivalent of signing Trout.
I will always remember Naquin’s walk-off inside-the-park home run when he played for Cleveland in ’16
I’ll always remember Naquin letting a ball drop in front of him in game 6 of the world a series. Cubs scored 2 runs and an inning latter put the game on ice with a grand slam by Addison Russell. Who also happened to hit the bloop double. If I’m not mistaken it was Naquin and former Cubs farm hand Brandon Guyer that let the ball drop.
Hmmm yes although I had forgotten about the bloop hit that both Naquin and Guyer didn’t field. Good memories for me, but if it’s any consolation I thought Cleveland would win after how poorly the Cubbies played when the series went to Wrigley Field, Game 5 was luck at its peak for the Cubs.
One day the Spiders (sorry I hate the guardians name) will have their moment in the sun. Maybe they need Theo as their GM/PoBO
Spiders sounds better, Guardians sounds dumb I agree.
In all fairness you guys have a good team, it’s just been a rough year this year. Last year, you guys were on fire, really good playoff run. Also, you guys develop pitchers as if you have them made a lab, something that is extremely valuable for a team to be in contention every year. Theo Epstein likes to spend, he wouldn’t do well with your low payroll team.
Logjammer: Everyone could use Theo as their GM, but I can understand why he left the cubs after ’16. He knew they were going into a rebuild and he doesn’t want to do that again. Most of the teams that aren’t in a rebuild don’t really need him.
@Logjammer: But, you see, Guardians is the team’s legal and official name. Refusing to call it that is childish and ignorant.
When you own the Cleveland MLB franchise, you may name it and call it the Spiders or whatever strikes your fancy.
I’m pretty sure that no Indians fan would consider it any consolation that you thought they’d win the World Series–especially seven years later. And…”luck at its peak”…please expound.
Game 5 was Madden riding Aroldis Chapman in multi innings relief, something Chapman was never utilized as, wasn’t effective at it, he himself said he didn’t feel good being used for more than one inning. Madden literally lucked out with that move, it could have easily backfired and given Cleveland the championship that game.
I know it’s no consolation, but I personally wrote them off prior to the win in Game 5. Cleveland was riding high, especially being up 3-1.
Mom geez! Like why you got to ruin all the fun! … wait, what you mean Santa Claus is not real?
Chapman not effective at??? What are you talking about….before game five of the World Series, in the playoffs he had pitched more than a full inning TWICE—spanning three innings without give up a hit. (that’s pretty effective)
Game five was do or die–as was game six—as was game seven..
And going into game seven, in multi inning situation he pitched eight innings, giving up two hits and one run.
The Davis home run in game seven completely skews everything about that series and Chapman.
(and game five was the first time he used Chapman in the World Series for more than one inning so he wasn’t riding him)
The one thing that Maddon did admit to as a regret was bringing Chapman back out in the ninth inning of game six after the Cubs opened the lead in the top of the inning. He is on the record as to saying that. That in no way makes game five as luck at its peak.
I don’t remember Maddon using Chapman for more than one inning prior to Game 5, and Chapman himself admitted he did not feel comfortable going more than an inning. It was luck because Maddon had not used Chapman in that capacity before. And Maddon himself theorized that if Cleveland could use Andrew Miller as a multi innings reliever, he wanted to try that with Chapman.
Maddon had no confidence in his other relievers hence why he was riding Chapman in Game 5. I’m glad it worked out, but that his calculus was pure luck in my opinion. His plan to copy Terry Francona’s tactic was 50/50 this is all straight out of Chapman’s and Maddon’s mouth.
It’s not that he didn’t have confidence in his other relievers—it’s that his other two closers during the season (rondon and strop) were both not 100% and he knew exactly what they were capable of.
Nobody ever, ever brings up the fact in game seven strop and rondon both were not used in the 10th inning or any point up to that.
Maddon knew exactly what he had and had to go with it, do or die.
The other side of the coin was that Francona relied so much on Andrew Miller, that he burned him out in the World Series games.
But I will agree with you that Maddon had to use Chapman it was do or die. I could have sworn he said something to the effect that he didn’t feel Rondon and Strop weren’t his preferred choice for high level situations, which would explain why Maddon used Chapman in Game 6 when he clearly should have saved him, but I could be wrong and if I am well it’s been a while, but I was following this series intently at the time.
I’ll always remember when they killed bin laden
I’ll always remember when they saved Rocket Raccoon
Who are “they?”
But can he fight?
They want to be the 2016/2017 Indians so bad. Clevinger, Shaw, Naquin…
Considering they collected an entire set of 90s Indians- a form of flattery?
I’m confused on this. I thought the White Sox were tanking?
Mercury: Tanking? They’re already at the bottom of the ocean
They’re actually doing an Albert Belle-putting up good numbers when the seasons over- acting as spoilers by beating playoff chasers the Guardians and Yankees. If I’m the Brewers or Cubs, approaching on their schedule, I’d be worried.
I’ll always remember Naquin being a bum for the Mets in 2022. Part of that awesome tandem with Darrin freakin’ Ruf at the trade deadline.
Ruf is currently on the brewers IL, before this trade I’ve been living in fear of having those two on the Crews active roster at some point so thank goodness for this trade as well as Carlos Santana now cant repeat mets mistakes
WHY? Maybe for the AAA World Series…nope Charlotte is like 30 games below .500 with a -220 run differential. This organization needs to clean house all the way down to the managers and player development of the MiLB.
Rick Hahn is burning this be0tcI-I to the ground.
Supreme: Hahn can only do what Reinsdorf let’s him do. And what Reinsdorf wants Hahn to do is not spend money. The only major leaguers the Sox have signed since last season are Benintendi and Clevinger, and Clevinger is gone after this year. I would say the Sox are a AAA team until you look at their AAA team.
Surprisingly Ozzie said he likes Clev in the post game, after ridiculing Clev just a few weeks ago for his many absences ( calling the Big Hurt the Clev of the team for his many absences from post game live). He went to say he’d like to have him around next year to mentor kid pitchers. So maybe he’s back?
White Sox are sure popular on MLB today, to bad it’s all negative. Sad day to be a Sox fan.
When isn’t it?
2005 and when the White Sox fleeced the Cubs out of Eloy and Cease. At least that’s what I keep getting reminded of.
I’ll say it again – I’m not sure why they want players like Naquin, Frazier and Haseley, when they have Victor Reyes playing in Charlotte- batting .305/.359/.514… I mean, if you want a washed up OF to play on the southside, might as well let Reyes waste ABs.
We need infielders, not outfielders! Need 3b, ss, 2nd and catcher!
They also need pitchers.
And a manager, GM, and most importantly, owner.
I’m a doctor, not a scriptwriter!
Hooray! Another corner player who doesn’t hit for power!
MLB Suspended Tim Anderson and as soon as he was slapped with 6 games, he fell on his butt again!
Getting away from Oakland might be just the ticket to restart his career, it has to be depressing playing for a club that wants to keep all players at minimum salary.
wileycoyote56: That’s exactly the team he’s going to.
Now that’s funny, who side will he take in the next Cleveland basebrawl ? His brothers or his new team ? Too funny, a real hoot.
Think this Naquin pickup is a deep troll on the part of Rick Hahn. Go nowhere ballclub deep sixes a team that thinks it’s in a pennant race by hanging 4 losses on them in a week, beating them with the likes of Clevinger, Touki Touissant and Bryan freakin Shaw. That’s like getting into a scrap with a pirate, stealing his wooden leg, then bashing the pirate over the head with said peg leg. Now collect even more ex Tribe- Guardians. That Rick Hahn. He’s a baaad man. Arrrr
The White Sox need to bring in a boxing instructor. Horrible form from TA.
Ooh deep
Sox were kicking the tires on him over the winter. When I had mentioned that in January/February someone that works for the site made a snide comment. He’s a good platoon hitter. Not an everyday player.
How you know- were you his guidance counselor
