The Braves announced a handful of roster moves Monday, optioning infielder Vaughn Grissom and lefty Jared Shuster to Triple-A Gwinnett while recalling righty Darius Vines for his MLB debut and reinstating second baseman Ozzie Albies from the injured list.
Vines, 25, was Atlanta’s seventh-round pick back in 2019 and has pitched well across three minor league levels this season after returning from a lengthy absence brought about by shoulder inflammation. Baseball America currently ranks him fifth among Braves prospects, while MLB.com has him tenth and FanGraphs pegs him 13th.
Since returning from the injured list in June, Vines has made nine starts: two with the team’s Rookie-level affiliate in the Florida Complex League, two in High-A and five with Triple-A Gwinnett once those four rehab appearances were complete. He hadn’t pitched beyond six innings until his most recent outing — a seven-inning start against the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate — but Vines has reached 90 pitches in each of his past three starts. He’ll give the Braves a long option out of the bullpen or a candidate to make a spot start, as needed.
In 43 1/3 innings this year, the Cal State Bakersfield product has posted a 2.70 ERA with a 27.1% strikeout rate, 8.2% walk rate and 44.4% ground-ball rate. Scouting reports at BA, MLB.com and FanGraphs tab Vines as a potential back-of-the-rotation arm thanks to his command of a three-pitch repertoire (fastball, slider, changeup). The changeup draws plus (60 on the 20-80 scale) or better offerings, with BA’s report noting that some scouts have put a plus-plus (70) grade on the pitch.
Vines joins Shuster, Dylan Dodd, Michael Soroka, AJ Smith–Shawver, Allan Winans and (once healthy) Ian Anderson as an in-house option who can compete for a rotation job next year. The Braves are largely set with Max Fried, Charlie Morton, Bryce Elder and a soon-to-return Kyle Wright making up the front four in the rotation both down the stretch and likely in the 2023 postseason. Morton isn’t a lock to return — the Braves have a $20MM option on him for the 2024 season — which will leave at least one and possibly two spots to be sorted out next spring. (The offseason could bring about trades and/or free-agent additions to address the starting staff, of course.)
As for Albies, he’ll return after two weeks on the shelf due to a strained hamstring. The Braves initially expressed optimism that Albies was only dealing with some minor cramping and might not even require an IL stint, but further testing revealed what wound up apparently being a fairly minor strain. Given Atlanta’s overwhelming lead in the NL East, there was every reason to proceed with caution, as they can effectively sleepwalk their way to a division title with a 12.5-game lead and just 33 games left to be played. Albies is in the midst of another terrific season, batting .267/.327/..514 with 28 home runs in 510 plate appearances.

Do it for the Vines
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
This dude has been moved up & down in the minors more than a yo yo on steroids. That could be good or not.
Braves are usually decent with pitchers, but let this guy settle down, you never know what’s in store for him or the Braves.
YaySports
Vines has never been demoted by Atlanta.. The upside is debatable but but he’s been solid to great at every stop since A ball.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
@Yay, you can be my interpreter, Vines has been moved “around” 12 times since 2017. (minus 2020) My point being they haven’t let him settle. Check out his Baseball Reference stats, it’s wildly confusing!
Braves_saints_celts
I see what you are saying, he started in rookie ball, missed 2020 of course, then started in a ball for 2021, the next year started in double a and then promoted to triple a, this year for some reason he started back in rookie ball, promoted back to a ball and then promoted again to triple a. It is very confusing.
YaySports
2017-2019 he was still in college so that’s just him transferring schools after his Sophomore year then after getting drafted he started at Rookie ball before being promoted. Brave_Saint laid the rest out above.
He spent the first half of this year on the DL so the games at A and AA this season we’re rehab assignments before getting back to AAA where he finished last season.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
But according to @Yay, he was never sent down?
Maybe for health purposes only he was still sent down, not demoted. I get it, as long as you do
Braves4410
He was drafted in 2019
BigDJohn
ROFL. You have no clue what so ever. Vines wasn’t even drafted till 2019, so how can he be moved around clear back in 2017?
BigDJohn
What are you talking about? Vines has never been moved up and down as you claim. He was injured to start the year, thus they had him in the CPX to make sure he was fine in some rehab starts, then moved his way back up after he showed he was fine.
Clofreesz
Overrated? I don’t think so.

Seems like he’ll be take over some for McHugh in long RP, for the time being. McHugh looked awful vs. SF.
Benjamin101677
I agree about McHugh I can accept the bad break bouncing ball that olson normally grabs but the walks are what killed us
YaySports
Just doing the same thing they did with Shuster last week. Bring him up now for extra depth in the pen but he’ll start when in the #5 spot when it comes back around if they don’t have an emergency before then.
bhambrave
The rotation also includes a guy named Spencer.
lukentroy
Yeah I heard that guy is pretty good. I believe he has a decent fastball.
Howiedoin
Lol how does he have zero mention?
But I Do
Seriously, how do you forget Strider? He’s the best pitcher in the Atlanta rotation and one of the best few in the league. All those guys Adams is talking about as in the mix for the fifth starter spot aren’t. Adams is a brutal writer for this site.
Edp007
Darius Vines climbing up the ladder ? Should be pitching in Wrigley
doodlebds
Uh…forgot Spencer Strider in that rotation…

What happened to Grissom being the next Swanson?
bhambrave
There’s a difference between being “the next Swanson” and being Swanson’s replacement. He was never going to be the first, and there’s still time for the second.
DCartrow
Maybe they meant Gloria Swanson and he’s just waiting for his closeup.

Grissom defense is not playing at major league level. He is a real hole in the defense in the infield. His future most likely lies as either a back up that can play 4-5 positions are maybe as a left fielder.
I still think there is a good chance that he goes in the off season in a trade piece. His defense is too shaky for Atlanta to work through where as another team maybe could afford to work through it with him.
bhambrave
He’s only 22. He may still stick at SS. If not, he’ll probably wind up at 2B.
BigDJohn
How does he end up at 2nd base when Alibes is a thing? They might as well try to move him to left, as that’s the only opening the Braves have.
bhambrave
If he winds up at 2B, it will be as a backup or as a trade.
ATLBraves21
Braves have 4 years of team control over Albies final 2 years are team options. I don’t think 2nd will be from Grissom either and with him not being a solid defensive back up on infield not sure that is his spot. I would not be surprise if he doesn’t get some work in left field and maybe split time with Eddie or another left handed hitter out there next year. Luke does have the most value due to being able to play infield and outfield if needed and not point in just letting Grissom sit in watch Braves play every day. Nicky is the backup infielder due to his defense and showed he can hit more than enough for what Braves want from a back up. When rosters expand I would think Wall will be called back gives us a back up outfielder at all 3 positions and speed for PR.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Evidently Luke Williams is more valuable on the roster than Vaughn Grissom . Hmm.
YaySports
Dumb take… Luke Williams is irrelevant. Atlanta would rather have Grissom playing somewhere than riding the bench in the majors.
bravesfan
Vines has been in the minors for quite some time. It’s well past his time to start putting up results at the show. Ie it’s essentially now or never for him
ATLBraves21
Why did they leave out Strider in rotation talk? Braves should be good for end of season with Morton, Fried, Strider, Wright and Elder. I would like to see Morton return next year but I think $20 million is high maybe $15 million would be better and have to see what Braves will be able to do with Fried. Will he sign or will Braves want to sign him to a long term deal in off season entering into final year of ARB? With the way AA does things if Braves can’t resign him I would not be surprise if AA doesn’t explore what kinds of trade options for Fried are out there.
bhambrave
I think the Braves will win arbitration against Max before 2024 and offer him a QO before 2025. He’ll sign elsewhere in 2025.
