The White Sox have acquired right-hander Mike Mayers from the Royals, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, with cash considerations heading in the other direction.
Mayers, 31, signed a minor league deal with the Royals in the winter and was deployed as a starter in Triple-A. He took the ball eight times for the Storm Chasers through the middle of May and posted a 6.88 ERA in 34 innings. He was selected to the Royals’ roster at that time and made six appearances, including two starts, for the big league club. He registered a 6.15 ERA through 26 1/3 innings before getting designated for assignment in the middle of June. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment and has been back with Omaha in a relief role in recent weeks.
The Sox are 38-54 and seem destined to do some selling prior to the August 1 trade deadline. They’re only eight games back in the weak American League Central but they would have to leapfrog three different clubs to get to the top and are even further back in the Wild Card race. It’s been speculated by many observers that impending free agents will be shopped and Lucas Giolito was recently ranked the #1 trade candidate by MLBTR for that very reason. Other pitchers like Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Keynan Middleton, Mike Clevinger and Reynaldo López make some sense as trade candidates to varying degrees, with the club reportedly willing to deal just about any pitcher except for Dylan Cease.
If that indeed comes to fruition and the Sox ship out a few arms from their big league staff, they may need to turn to a few of their depth pitchers in the final months of the season. Mayers has mostly served as a reliever in his career but has also made a handful of starts, including this year, allowing him to potentially fill either role in the months to come. He has a career ERA of 5.21 in 262 2/3 innings dating back to 2016. If he gets selected back to the roster at any point, he is out of options but could be retained for 2024 via arbitration if the club so chooses.

It’s just one more has-been with an ERA close 7 in AAA. He’ll go nicely with all the garbage with similar numbers jamming up the Sox’ farm system. If you’re going to rebuild you do it with prospects who might have a chance at being major league players. The guys the Sox have signed since the off-season, the dfa’s, players let go who couldn’t even make it in the A’s farm system, I would say would be place holders for the prospects that are yet to come when the FO trade quality major leaguers. But they’re not place holders. They’re it.

Be still, my heart!

Fill in #1 ahead of the purge. Might as well snag guys from the Royals if that is where the season is going to finish.
For Love of the Game
Snagging the Royals sloppy seconds is a really bad look. You know it’s bad for the Sox if a Tiger fan has pity on them!

A bit early for Halloween, isn’t it?
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Mike Mayers is welcome in the “windy city” and no longer needs to keep wearing his mask since that requirement was lifted in 2022.

So true story friends . So I actually was working part time as an Uber driver and picked up Mike at O’Hare airport. I had no clue who he even was. I was enjoying a vintage Reggie candy bar I picked up off of eBay . The weird thing about it is that it was a tad bit stale . So we started to chat and he saw the vintage wrapper with Reggie Jackson . So he asked if I liked baseball ? I said of course can’t you tell by my vintage 1986 Ron Hassey Sox jersey . Now keep in mind I just picked up this classic jersey at a garage sale in Bridgeview. So he mentioned that he was just picked up by the white Sox after playing for the royals . So after taking him to portillos in the south loop , he took out an autographed card of Bobby Witt jr and gave it to me. How about them apples ! You heard it here first my friends

This exact same thing happened to me

My Reggie bars have held up just fine. You didn’t keep yours in the freezer, huh.

Do Reggie bars still have the soapy aftertaste?

The Sox will be better next year, despite the big sell-off. You heard it here.

I find it very hard to believe. Gio could bring back someone useful, but we’re not talking a top 100 prospect. Hendriks, Graveman, Kenyon – same thing. Most of the other guys are either having garbage seasons or are on the Sox’ not-trading list: Robert, Cease, Vaughn, and Eloy. Burger may bring back someone they could use, but they’ll have no 2B of note, Moncada and his chronic underperformance at 3B (since nobody will take on his deal), Zavala at C, AB in LF, Sheets / Colas in RF, and who knows at SS? Then the rotation would be Cease and…?
If the team is going to tear down this hard, I don’t know why they wouldn’t make everyone available and just start a rebuild. There’s no way the baboons in their FO can fill that many holes, so they’d just be wasting a year of value from their core four. Only argument to keep any of them is to hope they, outside of Robert, can rebound from disappointing seasons. I know the baboons in charge of the retooling and rebuild would be the same, but I can at least hope on prospects.
cwsOverhaul
Hyrax: My “hope” is JR knows he’ll finally fire both KW/Hahn after the season since they caused the rebuild and did not even get a playoff series win for its do-over while in terrible division.
Hiring a credible POBO would involve the courtesy of at least having new regime making the decisions on trade returns for Cease/Robert rather than accept a job in which those clowns traded them for fool’s gold prospects of smart organizations (eg. DD wouldn’t deal Devers in Sale trade even though soft Moncada ranked higher + Kopech between ears issues).
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I want a poll question on which is more likely:
JR fires these two and hires competent people for a change or these two start a rebuild that actually succeeds (for sake of argument, I’ll put that as at least one deep playoff run and winning a playoff series at least one other year).
My money would be on the latter, but I put the odds of either at <5%.
IronBallsMcGinty
Earth shattering moves like this win championships.
Damn it’s difficult being a fan of this team.
The Big Yo
Purposely not read the comments on this at all. So here’s my take…..
What’s the point in this pointless trade?!!! Someone for the love of all hell please tell me why?
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
They need human bodies to pitch actual MLB innings in 2023 after they trade off all their decent to halfway decent pitchers at the deadline.
Probably "Rick hahn"
And you fanboys think Lord Jerry is cheap! For shame!

Yea,Baby !!
ChiTown Sox
Kind of fits the bill of the pitchers they just drafted.

If you think this is bad, wait until Giolito, Lynn, and Clevinger are all moved. This guy may end up taking the ball every 5th day in August and September, along with the likes of Tanner Banks and Jesse Scholtens.
nrd1138
I think that the time is right for the ‘chairman’ to sell the Sox, get a new owner in here. At least if they fire sale and trade everyone including Cease and Robert, its kind of expected and hopefully they will have an owner that wants to have competent people in his org who want to win and will make good decisions (at least better than this current org).
msqboxer
Great move…I was concerned that they actually thought they had a chance in the division and weren’t going to move Giolito, Lynn, Lopez, Middleton and others. I don’t want to see any return that has any players not in AA or above.
