July 14: The Tigers announced that Schoop has now cleared waivers and been granted his release.
July 12: The Tigers have released Jonathan Schoop, according to the transaction tracker at MLB.com. Once he clears release waivers, he’ll be a free agent.
This was the expected outcome when Detroit designated the veteran infielder for assignment on Friday night. Schoop’s offensive struggles — he’s a .204/.248/.311 hitter going back to the start of 2022 — meant he was never likely to attract trade interest. He’s making $7.5MM this season (a little more than $3MM of which is still to be paid out), which no club is going to assume via waiver claim.
After hitting the market, the 31-year-old should be able to find some interest around the league. He’s a former All-Star who rated as a Gold Glove caliber defensive second baseman a season ago. Schoop’s offense has evaporated the past couple years, but he’s a career .254/.293/.428 hitter through parts of 11 big league campaigns.
Given his struggles at the plate, Schoop might be limited to minor league opportunities for now. If he cracks another team’s MLB roster this season, that club would pay him the prorated amount of the $720K league minimum salary for however long he’s in the majors. Detroit will remain on the hook for the rest of the contract.

“Hello Jonathan, it’s your agent. Just got off the phone with Yankees GM Brian Cashman. He says he’s interested in offering you a contract. That .213 average really impresses him and he thinks you’d fit in perfect in their lineup.”
GarryHarris
Jonathan Schoop is not a strong enough health risk for the Yankees.
CravenMoorehead
Lol GarryHarris good point!
Dogbone
Comon Craven, Cashman will have to ‘outbid’ the White Sox for his services.
thecoffinnail
Cashman is only interested in him if he is willing to switch to the OF and pitch out of the bullpen a few times a week.
rubenrosario
Nationals if u trade candelario get schoop and sign him
Wilmer the Thrillmer
Schoop could be a no risk, extremely low cost flyer for the Giants until Thairo comes back. If he hits he plays, if he doesn’t they’d DFA him.
sfjackcoke
At best Schoop would go to AAA, he’s not worth in this moment a 40 man spot. I’m sure SF has laid eyes on him, the question is to they see a fix to his swing DET did not?
Ejemp2006
Schoop is just one of the victims of the bad juju coming from Baez and the ghost of Avila. IMO Schoop has the potential to be the next Daniel Murphy, if he regains his mojo. I would love to see him on the Dodgers, where the support staff is first class.
dragonfan96
I wish Baez would leave after the season
Gtojohnr
Why wait till the end of the season, what is wrong with him leaving NOW? He is a waste , he can’t hit and is just sucking up money !
ChrisinWA360
Seattle needs to move on from kolten wong
I should sign Schoop to back up jose caballero . And I would call up Didi Gregorius and send down Dylan Moore maybe even give Nelson Cruze a shot and replace mike ford
ChrisinWA360
I would also trade for Tommy Pham and definitely get rid of AJ Pollock
Seattle isn’t that far away from going to the playoffs but we can’t continue to keep Moore , pollock , Wong , on the roster. Milk ford probably will do okay until September
Hemlock
> Milk ford probably will do okay
> until September
It’s important to know your farm animals and their limits. Still, I reckon Mr. Ford’s gonna take exception if you milk him til September.
stymeedone
You can milk anything with nipples.
thecoffinnail
Ford isn’t going anywhere. Dipoto obviously has some sort of man crush on him similar to Cashman’s love for oft injured TOR pitchers. Going back to 2017 when he took him in the rule 5 he seems to trade or sign him every year. You are willing to give Nelson Cruz a shot but not willing to let Pollock try to figure things out? At least Pollock isn’t a statue in RF. I’m not sure how DiDi is doing in Tacoma but other than his few years with the Yankees he has always been a subpar player. Something obviously clicked for him in NY but it’s been long gone for years. It’s probably a bit early to give up on Wong. He has played in the NL Central his entire career. Going to the AL West has obviously been a shock to his game. I’d give him a couple more weeks to see if some life returns to his bat before cutting bait. He might surprise ya. If not there should be plenty of 2nd baseman available at the deadline. The last few years Seattle has seemed to be a missing piece or 2 from the playoffs. Unfortunately, they are missing a lot from going deep in the playoffs. They should be sellers at the deadline not buyers.
Motor City Beach Bum
This is two seasons in a row he’s been on the downhill slide on offence. Too bad his D at 2B has been wicked and he was a good teammate but that putrid offensive profile is hard to overlook. It was not worth it anymore to have him soak up at bats that could go to others they are trying to develop or get a look at.
mrkinsm
He only needs about 45 days of additional service for his pension to fully vest. Hopefully, he catches on somewhere and reaches that plateau.
Airo13
He also played the worst 3b, I have ever seen. If he had defensive versatility, his leash would have been longer.
stymeedone
Obviously, you weren’t watching when Maton, Nevin, McKinstry or Ibanez attempted the position. Schoop was playing out of position at 3B because he was the best of a bad lot. Now that Keith, and Henry-Malloy have been moved off the position, cutting Candelario over $1MM in negotiations is really looking bad. Schoop could be a nice pickup for SFG. His swing may come back with regular playing time. He wasn’t even used as the right side of a platoon in Detroit.
TroyVan
He was never used because he hasn’t hit for 2 years. It’s too bad they couldn’t get him to accept an assignment to AAA at some point in the last 2 years. He really needed to go down and get it figured out. I liked him, but he was a big reason why Detroit has failed to score many runs. Not the only reason, but one of the main ones.
stymeedone
Everyone was bad last year, and this year, they didn’t really play him. Can’t be your fault while sitting on the bench. They should have put him at 2B, his best position, and let him play through the trade deadline to hopefully get some trade value. They chose to give ABs to waiver claims instead, and now had to eat $8MM. That would have covered Candelarios salary.
TroyVan
Well, Schoop deserved that extension based on how he played leading up to it. So, this offseason (when Candy was non tendered), it was already a sunken cost.
But, if you are saying you would rather have Candy on this roster versus Schoop, I say Me, too! And, if I were given a choice this past offseason between the two, I would have picked Jeimer…..over and over.
Motor City Beach Bum
Well put and I agree too. Not signing Candelario was a misstep.
Roidville Slugger
I remember watching a game at AAA Norfolk years ago. He was on deck during a pitching change and started talking to a kid in the first row the whole time the pitcher warmed up. I thought that was cool…but maybe he was just trying to impress the MILF there alone with the kid.
For Love of the Game
It’s possible he was just being a good guy, just like he was once a good ballplayer.
C Yards Jeff
Peter Angelos was averse to pursuing international talent. Somehow, Schoop and the Birds found each other. Does anyone know the back story?
Roidville Slugger
Yeah. They were pretty few and far between back then. Eduardo Rodriguez is the only other one that jumps out at me.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Schoop could be a fit in Philly. Josh Harrison on the DL and Edmundo Sosa, though versatile, ain’t much.
Maybe a shot to get into the playoffs would wake up his bat? Besides, Tigers on the hook for his contract, so the cost for Philly would be chump change.
Could also see the Brewers kicking the tires with Schoop.
Hurricane Sandy
Schoop… Schoop-a-doomp.. Schoop-a-doomp.. Schoop-a-doomp-a-doomp-a-doomp
alproof
Bring up the kids
tradepartner
Think we’ll see the kids after the trade deadline
Might as well get their feet wet
detroitfan69
He sucked
sadosfan
Get paid 3 million to sit around and play video games? A bit jealous.
nottinghamforest13
Cue Jon Heyman telling us that some contender is going to be a major player for Schoop now that he’s available.
For Love of the Game
Why not? Maybe a change of scenery heats up his bat. I know that’s unlikely after a year and a half of futility, but if it doesn’t work you just cut him.
Shapilier
Come back home Schoop, we’re saving a seat for you at the O’s keystone
baked mcbride
No, we’re not. I loved Schoop’s time in Baltimore, but that bird has flown.
Shapilier
“That bird has flown” I see what you did there XD
Candlestoked
We got dibs til Tairo Estrada is off the IL.
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
This is what Ezequiel Duran will turn into soon. Texas should really trade him away in case any of the 29 GMs are as optimistic about his as Rangers’ fans! They could end up with Giolito or maybe even Bieber with some minor leaguers. The same happened to Odor, Mazara, Guzman, Javier Baez now, etc. Few players succeed with such bad discipline. Salvador Perez is the lone exception to high K/BB rates. Bad discipline and good contact would cancel out (Beltre, Guerrero Sr, etc.), but this guy strikes out way more than he walks. This type of player has little potential.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Mets reunion with Buck? He hits like the rest of the Mets, so his performance won’t stick out on the downside. 🙂
