The Reds have acquired left-hander Sam Moll and international cap space from the Athletics, according to announcements from both clubs. The A’s will receive pitching prospect Joe Boyle in exchange. To make room for Moll on their 40-man roster, the Reds transferred Hunter Greene to the 60-day injured list.
Moll, 31, has spent the past three years serving as an effective reliever in the Oakland bullpen. From 2021 to the present, he’s made 106 appearances, allowing 3.65 earned runs per nine innings. His 24.9% strikeout rate and 50.6% ground ball rate are both strong, though his 11.5% walk rate is a few ticks higher than league average.
2023 has been a strange season for him, as his 4.54 ERA is higher than the previous two campaigns despite so much stuff going right in terms of his under-the-hood numbers. His 27.1% strikeout rate, 11.2% walk rate and 52% grounder rate are each improvements over recent years. It seems a .340 batting average on balls in play and 68.2% strand rate have helped some extra runs across the plate, as his 3.25 FIP and 3.71 SIERA are both career bests.
MLBTR’s Steve Adams recently took a look at Moll’s season and highlighted his increasing use of a four-seam fastball. Dating back to mid-May, he has a 3.80 ERA in 23 2/3 innings, striking out 30.9% of opponents against an 8.2% walk rate, still getting grounders on over half the balls allowed in play. He has a 2.35 FIP in that time and a 2.97 SIERA.
The Reds have leapt into contention this year on the strength of their young core of position players, currently sporting a record of 58-49 that has them atop the National League Central, half a game ahead of the Brewers coming into today’s action. Left-handed relief was an obvious area for the club to add, since Alex Young has been their only southpaw reliever for much of the year. Reiver Sanmartin recently underwent UCL surgery and won’t be back any time soon. Moll is a long-term option for the Reds, as he is slated to finish this season with between two and three years of service time, meaning he can be retained for four seasons beyond the current campaign and isn’t even slated to reach arbitration until after 2024.
The A’s had little reason to hang onto Moll, despite those years of control. He didn’t establish himself at the big league level until his age-29 season and is now 31. The A’s have been leaning hard into a rebuild recently, with their 30-77 record the worst in the majors. Ownership is going to be focused on moving the team to Las Vegas in the immediate future and might not make the necessary investments to get the club back into competitive shape for a while.
Instead, they have exchanged him for Boyle, a 23-year-old right-hander who is listed at 6’7″ and 240 pounds. He was drafted by the Reds in the fifth round of the 2020 draft and got a brief professional debut in the lower levels of their farm system in 2021. He split last year between High-A and Double-A, tossing 100 2/3 innings over 23 outings with a 2.86 ERA. He struck out 36.5% of batters but also issued walks at an eyebrow-raising 20% clip. He’s made 19 more Double-A starts this year with similar results, striking out 31.5% of opponents while walking 19.4%, leading to a 4.50 ERA.
Both Baseball America and FanGraphs currently list Boyle as the #20 prospect in the Reds’ system. The book on him seems to be that he has excellent stuff but worrisome control, which matches the stat line. He has a triple-digit fastball and quality breaking stuff as well, but will need to greatly rein in his command in order to be effective.
Greene will now be ineligible to return until 60 days from his placement on the injured list due to hip pain, which was on June 18, officially keeping him out until August 17. He’s expected to make a rehab start this weekend with a planned return in late August.

Coming from a Royal fan who claimed that the Royals was going to be champs this year I will take it as a compliment.

Phew, you’re back. After 10 A’s posts without that joke we were worried you had gotten lost in the woods or something.

@Statman – Just stop dude.
Your copy and paste of the same Post, for every A’s article, adds nothing to the conversation.

Steal Deal for the Reds. ERA isn’t doing him justice.

Yep. BABIP against is .340.
rocknwell
I’ve never understood this. If hitters are hitting .340 against, it means he’s not a good pitcher (during the time that hitters are hitting this well against him). So why do a lot of folks think “oh well he’s just running into bad luck, his era should be lower”. Well, maybe not because hitters are hitting .340 against him! He obviously needs to make an adjustment. Or maybe he’s playing injured and his compensation for that injury is causing hitters to hit him well. I don’t know. But a high BABIP should mean the pitcher needs to make changes soon. Maybe you can help me understand this strange concept.
falconsball1993
Because babip can be the result of crappy grounders finding holes, lack of rangy infielders, or favorable hitters parks. A high babip literally means things outside his control are affecting his effectiveness. New situation will hopefully fix that

People are way too into pitching peripherals, the science (or I should say educated guesses) work better with hitters. I remember a Tigers relief pitcher with god awful peripherals that continually pulled a sub 3 era.
AFrenchBullDog
If the dude doesn’t have a ton more barrels or HH% than his normal range and his babip is .360 when it’s normally like .280 then it should regress to the norm. Baseball is a highly variant sport
Mikey P
It’s balls in play average. You couple that with how balls are hit – soft contact v hard contact and fly balls v line drives v ground balls – to get a better understanding of things. Defense also comes into play. In Mills case, he’s had a lot of grounders go in between infielders. So it’s a lot of soft contact that has eyes. Better defense on the reds and some better luck and his era will be more like 1.89.
AFrenchBullDog
Yea I think it’s a great pickup

Finally the Reds did something.
mrflimflam
Wow!
AMiCk ĐOGEron
We need STARTING pitching. Not more average to below average relievers.
stymeedone
This doesn’t prevent them from acquiring a starter. They needed LH relief, too.
earmbrister
Anybody that they acquire is likely to be worse than Greene (due back 8/20) Ashcraft, Lodolo (due back late August), and Abbott. The starting pitching need has lessened considerably.
A stud reliever is still a need. Hader anyone?
AFrenchBullDog
They don’t really need starters unless they are pulling someone for multiple years. They have Greene coming back and Abbott / Ashcraft / Lively / Williamson and hopefully Lodolo. Who that is an average rental is really an upgrade over that
mrflimflam
Good, another left hander, that helps.
avenger65
You don’t put up numbers like Hader has without being successful against both righties and lefties.
Cincyfan85
Hopefully they get a replacement for Luke Weaver.
vamosrojos
Won’t Hunter Greene going to replace Luke Weaver?
Mikey P
Greene lodolo Ashcraft abbot Williamson. Ideally but hard to count on all the kids. Lively much better in the pen and weaver long reliever at best. But it would be really nice to have an established vet take the ball in the playoffs and not have to count on Williamson or lodolo
JTSmith Reds
Not the best of news for Hunter Greene. Would think that Reds would have to go after a starting pitcher.
Armaments216
It’s just a procedural move to open a roster spot. Doesn’t really affect Greene’s expected timeline.
joeshmoe11
He’s eligible to come off on Aug 18. That’s just a couple of rehab starts away.
Degaz
Good move nay the Reds. Moll is solid and a lefty and controlled until 2028. Joe Boyle has great stuff but has worse control than Charlie Sheehan. He will never be a MLB starter.
Mikey P
Controllable to 2028 and cheap. That’s what I missed.
Foxtrot Unicorn Charlie Kilo
Maybe.
He could also turn into an elite starter or elite reliever.
There’s been many lefties in recent memory who’ve burned out as starters only to become elite relievers.
Brad Hand Drew Pomeranz Andrew Miller Matt Moore Zach Britton
AFrenchBullDog
They are gettting a pretty damn good reliever under control for multiple years. There is a higher chance that Moll is better than he ever will be than the oppositw
Mikey P
We traded a dude who throws 100!!! Damn this looks horrible on paper. Hope I’m missing something.

Here’s his Scouting report on MLB Pipeline.com:
mlb.com/prospects/reds/joe-boyle-671212
75 Walks in 84 Innings? Ouch.
With that windup, looks like he might reach the Big leagues faster with the A’s if he gets moved to the Bullpen. But, therein likes the quandary, you have to throw Strikes if you are coming out of the Bullpen. We’ll see.
My A’s are going nowhere so why not? He’ll need to be placed on the 40-Man Roster by the end of the season because he’ll be Rule 5 Draft eligible.
luca brasi
Oakland opened a second spot on the 40 man roster today by DFA, Manny piña.
Asfan0780
So they’re eating his $4 mill salary for next year, what a waste even getting him in that disaster Sean Murphy deal
Degaz
Can’t find the plate and has showed zero progress in that regard in 3 year. Not a starter IMO. Could be a very good BP guy though.
FWIW I had him ranked #11 in the Reds farm system in 2022. He is now #26 in my list as I had lost all hope he could be a starter.
GL though
letmeclearmythroat74
Let me get this straight ….. you make you’re own list and rankings for minor leaguers ? Who has that kind of time ..wow
Degaz
Yep…I have lots LOL
joeshmoe11
Velocity is nice but he can’t find the strike zone. Boyle is more likely to top out in AAA than he is to make an impact in MLB.
YourDreamGM
A for Oakland. Elite arm. Awful control. If someone improves it he has closer stuff. It’s a fantasy to think to improve it enough to start. But to get it good enough to come in 6th 7th when you need a K.
C for CIN. Lots of team control. Gets leftys out. Gave up a elite arm but one they haven’t been able to teach control. Must not be confident. It’s a A if they are convinced there’s nothing more they could do. Just takes 1 coach though.
YourDreamGM
I’m never off.
earmbrister
Yeah ok. Are you my ex? She was never wrong either.
Boyle is giving up 8 BB per 9 IP in AA. Guys like him (elite stuff, no control) are a dime a dozen. Moll is actually getting the job done (and keeping the ball in the ballpark) in the majors.
Don’t quit your day job. The grades should be a B for the Reds and a C for the A’s.
earmbrister
No, bored. Anyone who claims to never be wrong, is almost always more wrong than most.
And there’s never any proof, just a lot of pompous hot air.
YourDreamGM
This is my day job.
YourDreamGM
Proof is I just made that bold statement and yet you didn’t contradict me.
YourDreamGM
Go read my Carlos Santana pirates signing or SD Bogaerts signing. Some of my finest work. It’s always good but those were exceptional.
case
A reliever with a 4.54 era in a cavernous ballpark is really not getting the job done. Your ex was right.
YourDreamGM
Look and you will see I said the same before you did. All you did was copy me and play the opps I didn’t even see yours.
ARC 2
How is a pitcher who has control problems a A? None of his stats says elite arm.
YourDreamGM
Learn about pitching and watch him. Elite fastball. Really good slider. Lottery odds of becoming a starter. Would be a heck of development job to get him good enough to be a reliever. But to get that kind of arm for Moll is a easy A.
YourDreamGM
Just got another one right. Sox fans said Verdugo for Peralta was fair trade. I said no way in h. And I was right. Happens all the time. You all must be noobs here.
jbryant0693
You can teach delivery but you cannot teach control.
YourDreamGM
Not true.
Degaz
Wow you should take your Spin talents to DC. Some politician could use. you!
Motor City Beach Bum
Boyle is a really nice get.
jimd-2
As definitely got the better if the deal. Reds over paid for a marginal LH reliever. Boyle has unreal electric stuff. He still is inconsistent with his control but the stuff plays Big Time.. this minor move by Reds doesn’t really address there need for a starter or a couple innings eaters out of pen..
JCPenny
I guess people don’t realize that the reds, at least on baseball reference, have the highest WAR from the pen and are top 10 in WAR by all pitchers. They needed another lefty and got it. Find me an example of a pitcher with Boyle’s command in AA that became a quality major leaguer.
joeshmoe11
PLUS Boyle needs to be added to the 40 man or be exposed to rule 5 draft after the season. Reds have a glut of guys who need protecting above him so he’d be exposed to be plucked over the winter for nothing anyway.
JCPenny
How did the reds overpay? I keep reading here about boyle’s stuff. His stuff is never over the plate. He’ll be 24 soon and can’t find the plate in AA. Maybe in 5 years he’s a great middle reliever.
RichP
Curious what the Reds expect Moll to bring to their club?
YourDreamGM
He gets lefties out.
octavian8
Help for Young as another lefty in the pen. Decent move for Cincy
Bdonnell
The Reds have 4 of the top 9 RP in the NL in appearances. Yes, the CIN bullpen has been a unexpected strength, but they need some reinforcements to help carry the load down the stretch & definitely needed another LHP out of the bullpen. This is a very good trade for the Reds.
Boyle has a live arm, but he’s always had control issues. Unlikely the A’s fix that, but who knows.
cguy
Not entirely about adding Moll. Alex Youn g in 13 appearances allowed 0 runs in July. Now with Moll, Bell has the opportunity to use Young in even more leveraged situations. There also was probably no room on the 40 man roster this December for Boyle. Lastly, Reds must have their eye on another international prospect this year & need cap space.
Degaz
MLBTR is wrong…Reds got the INTL cap space which makes it an even more lopsided trade.
MacGromit
holy smokes, the Reds got a gift. hate that the O’s didn’t get Moll, he seemed like a good fit for middle relief now we’ll never know
stymeedone
Shreve and Cisnero are both available from Detroit.
Paleobros
Mollvelous news
casey21
Traded a Boyle for a Moll. Someone has bad skin.
Pete_Rose_was_Framed
Joe Boyle throws over 100 mph, but his control is about like Charlie Sheen in Major League. Ball is moving but, it’s in the dirt, it’s at someone’s head, or 2 feet off of home plate. I was sure they wouldn’t get anything for him, so the Reds GM did well. And yes I’ve seen this guy pitch in person and I wouldn’t have gone up to bat without a suit of armor. He’s that wild.
THEY LIVE!!!
Moll traded for Boyle? I had a Boyle once that was so huge the core of it was the size of the end of a #2 pencil or about the size of a .22 short. Hurt so bad I became fevered and delusional. Much rather have a Moll, unless it’s a precancerous Moll.
Gumby82
Congratulations Sam! You’re heading to the Show! Eff Forst and eff John Fisher! #SELL

Surprised Trevor May is still there.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
Nice pickup for the Reds, this guy is pretty good at picking up strikeouts.
earmbrister
However, he will miss pitching half of his games in the spacious Coliseum
This one belongs to the Reds
Some help for an overworked bullpen and a needed lefty with Young being the only one all season. Boyle would have got killed in that ballpark with his lack of command.
It didn’t fill the main need for a starter to replace BP pitcher Weaver, but at least it’s something useful and an actual big league player for once.
zacharydmanprin
A sack of wet mice that throws left handed for a safe of wet rats that throws right handed.
slasher016
Definitely needed another lefty in the pen. Plus Alex Young has reverse splits, he’s better against righties. Gave up a lottery ticket. Lots of years of control + some cap space. Solid move.
Mikeyl
Might as well give them the championship now
NoKluReds
Glad to see the Reds not going after any two-month-rental types and relinquishing any top prospects (so far). Save them for the blockbuster deals. With Greene coming back in 2-3 weeks there’s no need for a SP. Greene, Abbott, Ashcraft, Lively, and Williamson is a decent rotation, with Lololo’s return on the horizon. The ‘pen is in dire need of a true LH stopper because Young has reverse splits and Moll looks qualified. Boyle is like a sports car with faulty steering speeding down a twisting mountain road: it looks good and goes really fast but there’s a really good chance it’s going to crash and burn before it gets where it’s going. No complaints about this deal.
sportsfreak52
Either reward the Reds’ rookies for playing so well with a couple of good pitchers or sell the dang club to some owners who aren’t afraid to spend some money to win. Votto even comes off the books next year, leaving your payroll at next to nothing in 2024, ownership better act like they care about winning or they’re going to lose what few loyal fans that they have left!!
