The Cardinals are not trading Nolan Arenado, with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak firmly stating that fact to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. There was a report earlier this week that the Dodgers had strong interest in the third baseman and were discussing a deal, but it seems those talks won’t lead to Arenado leaving St. Louis. “I have stated we are not trading him, have not asked him to waive his no-trade clause,” Mozeliak said. “So at this time, we are working on building for future success.”
Despite the reported talks with the Dodgers, there were inherent obstacles to getting a deal done. For one thing, Arenado and the Cardinals seem to have a good relationship, as he didn’t trigger his opt-out opportunity at the end of last year. Most observers agreed he could have beat the five years and $144MM remaining on the deal, but he chose to stay, seemingly happy to stick with the organization as opposed to maximizing his earnings.
Since he has a full no-trade clause, he would have to sign off on any deal, and it would be surprising for him to do so after just waiving that opt-out chance. The report on the talks with the Dodgers indicated he was willing to accept a deal only to the Dodgers, having always wanted to play for them as a Southern California native. But Arenado told reporters last night that he had not been approached about his clause.
Beyond the contractual complications, all indications have suggested the Cards are planning to sell some pieces but still try to contend again next year. Since Arenado is one of the better players in the game, it would be hard to imagine a scenario wherein they subtract him from the roster and make their 2024 team better. The Cards do have a surplus of position players and a dearth of pitching, so perhaps one could make the argument that even “losing” a trade that makes the pitching staff better would be a net victory, but the easier path is just to keep Arenado and find other ways of upgrading the pitching staff.
Although Arenado is apparently sticking around, it still seems like Mozeliak and his staff will be busy in the next few days. The Cardinals are currently 46-59 and 11 games out of a playoff spot. Mozeliak has already admitted that the club will have to do some selling, making moves that are more focused on upgrading the 2024 club. That will seemingly lead to trades of impending free agents like Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks between now and the August 1 deadline.

No. We don’t. We’re good knowing our team knows how to draft and develop prospects, sign intl players, find guys that other teams gave up on and make them serviceable or better, and pull of the occasional trade to improve the roster when/where needed. We have our clown fans, like any other fan base, but we’re hopeful… like any other fan base.
Neon Cop
Remember when people insisted their lineup was “homegrown”? Now it’s down to Will Smith LOL
captainsalty
Your Dodgers envy is showing. Love how everything every time there is a Dodger post you come out from underneath your troll

Neon Cop
Why would I be envious of a team that can’t get it done in October? Grow a brain, homer.
amk1920
Ok? Their rotation is entirely home grown outside of incoming Lance Lynn
cobby100
Sounds like you’re jealous. No?
Neon Cop
Ah, now it’s just the rotation…
amk1920
We’ll see if Vargas and Bisch can eventually get back on the team. And you conviently forgot Outman exists. So that’s possibly half of their 2024 lineup.
jasonthebuc
You might as well add Taylor and Muncy since they were minor leaguers when the Dodgers got them.
Freeman’s agent
2017. World Series Champs and 2020. I don’t see 1 Astros player trying to flaunt that “championship.” I wouldn’t be either.

I’m a Giants fan to the nth degree. Since 60s. And I’m hoping they become what the Dodgers are. The model. And what that is was defined perfectly by Lost Realist. They clearly are the model every fan wants their team to follow. I think giants are getting there with Zaidi but it’s still a work in progress. But any one that dogs on the Dodgers is clearly one thing…..envious. I’m looking forward to future Giants Dodger battles which define the greatness of baseball
Neon Cop
Yeah, no. Who’s “envious”? Why? Because of regular season wins? Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.
jopeness
@lost,
I do commend the Dodgers on their player development and scouting. I’ve made the argument the Yanks have a hard time recreating a core due to constant 25+ round draft picks. However, the Dodgers seem to find a way, hopefully we can poach some of those mid-tier scouts.

Highwaymenace
The delusions of dodger fans knows no bounds, but what do you expect from people who choose to live not only in California but the cesspool that is LA, the most narcissistic city in the history of the world. The propaganda headquarters is “Hollywood” and it clearly works on the locals.
The dodgers have spent hundreds of millions of dollars they don’t have, to buy good players reminiscent of the 90’s Yankees, only the Yankees actually had the money, the league didn’t have to step in and force their hand due to the outrageous debt/income ratio got under this new investment firm ownership group.
The dodgers got absolutely lucky with Clayton Kershaw, and even luckier he didn’t leave for greener pastures when he should’ve.
The dodgers absolutely bought that bubblechip that nobody considers a real championship, and have otherwise been the definition of choke artists for well over a decade.
Dodgers fans prove everyone here right about them. You expect to sign every free agent because you think it’s a privilege to live in that dung heap of a city. Dodger fans also believe they will get every major trade target they want, again because of their own belief in their superiority to everyone else.
The team has a storied history as one of the oldest and best teams in the league. And in the LA era they have a reputation for the worst fans in the league. You only show up to games or watch on tv when you’re winning, statistically amongst the worst “front runner” offenders. Not only that, but you can’t handle losing and fans gang up and beat on opposing fans. Brian Stowe is just one example…
In typical brainwashed sheep LA fashion, dodger fans will read this and say “you’re jealous”(misspelled because people in LA aren’t that smart).
Sigh, the dodgers only saving grace is they are on the shorter end of the greatest rivalry in baseball.

I don’t think they should, but time will tell if that’s smart or not.
Jeremy320
It’s not. Let gorman/walker play 3rd.
Deadguy
Walker I think is the better choice for 3rd…
Cardinals should trade Goldschmidt who isn’t going to be any better next year, Arenado, Flaherty, Hicks, Montgomery, Dejong, Contreras, and only got like 2 days to get all that done…
John Mozeliak is a overpaid wash up
17dizzy
I’d agree on anything you’d say Mozeliak and the principle owners in your comment. But when you look at it right now—-
Montgomery-Flaherty- & Hicks are currently their 3 best pitchers.
JayRyder
With such a sweet contract, of course they keep him. He’s a HoFer. They’re not going to give him away to the competition. The Cards Always are competitive. Maybe not this year. Their catcher situation played a roll. And health totally. They will be back !
Yanks2
His stats are inflated because of thin Colorado air. He’s not a HOFer, but Hall of Very Good, yes
CardsFan57
He’s had great offensive years in St Louis. You can lose the Denver inflated stats narrative.
Yanks2
I never said he isn’t good in STL. Just that he’s not a HOFer
King of Cards
Pretty sure 10 straight gold gloves including some platinum equals Hall of Fame.
FrontOfficeStan
He is certainly on pace to be an HOFer. Whether he can still perform at a high level while he ages remains to be seen.
King of Cards
He retires tomorrow and he’s in. Best defensive 3b of his generation and a pretty darn good hitter too.
Yanks2
.276 BA in STL
.334 OBP in STL
He’s above average offensively outside of elevated Coors Field but I agree, easily Arenado is the best defensive 3B in the last decade
King of Cards
Arenado is top 5 defensive 3b of all time. Brooks Robinson probably better. Who else? It’s a short list.
Yanks2
A Rod
King of Cards
You mean Aroid of course.
avenger65
I can think of Mike Schmidt, Machado and, yes, Yoan Moncada, who is outstanding defensively when he’s not on the IL.
King of Cards
Moncada???
Lol
10 straight gold gloves……
tangerinepony
He’ll get in the hall of fame because despite playing in Colorado he put up some good numbers but more then that 10 gold gloves. When his career is finished he’ll be remembers as one of the greatest defensive 3B in baseball history
astros_fan_84
I am tired of the Coors discrimination. The numbers are skewed because the other four parks in the division are pitchers’ parks.
CardsFan57
astros_fan_84
To your point, the splits are much less pronounced this year with a more balanced schedule across the leagues.
SODOMOJO
How is is war only 1.9 with those numbers? Defense slipping this year? Feels like he should be up over 3.
YankeesBleacherCreature
His OOA is zero and typically is in double digits by season’s end. FG has him at 2.6.
Payne Train
They should consider trading Goldy. One of the best but he only has one year left and he could fetch the pieces that they are to cheap to buy in FA.
VonPurpleHayes
I’ve been saying this as well. He’ll net a large return.
squishy
Same and he’s not part of the long term future.
CuddyFox
Goldy has a no trade clause too. So the Cardinals need to go to him to waive it. He will not though.
VonPurpleHayes
Everyone always says stuff like this, but these older guys almost always waive to go to a contender. Scherzer just did. Goldy likely would too. He wants a title shot.
CuddyFox
Who say that he wants to leave though? He might just want to stay and play with the team next year.
VonPurpleHayes
Definitely. St. Louis seems like a fine place to play. No one is saying otherwise. Sometimes these guys just want a title shot. Sometimes they don’t.
astros_fan_84
I’d love to add Goldie, but Abreu is starting to play better. I don’t see it as a good fit roster wise, but it makes so much sense on paper.
Little Stevie Janowsky
Dodger fans in tears
norcalblue
Not this one. I am as pleased about this announcement as apparently you are. I see Arenado’s contract as a liability moving forward.
Dodgers have an excellent clubhouse, great chemistry. It would probably require trading someone valuable from the starting lineup to get Arenado, not to mention saddling us with his contract. I’d much rather to take my chances on getting Ohtani next year. Would love to have Montgomery though…
Clueless LA Times writers wanted Arenado, not Friedman.
playhard9
The contract is not even that bad for his future years. He could have opted out and got more. Not a greedy guy. If you think he wouldn’t help the Dodgers, you are just trolling.
CardsFan57
That contract is an extreme bargain compared to Machado, Bogaerts, Turner, and Seagar. The annual salary starts dropping after Arenado’s age 33 season. His salary at age 36 is $15 million. That’s the last year of the contract. He’s not getting paid into his 40s. Colorado is covering $5 million per year for years 2024 – 2026.
playhard9
Yeah you don’t need him because the Dodgers have won so many WS. How many in regular length seasons? Yep, no help needed there.
MrStomper 2
@Littledouchie LOL. You really think we care that much? Only a psycho would cry over a sports team.
amk1920
Cardinals have become a mediocre mom and pop shop. Wouldn’t be surprised if they hold onto their rentals too.
30 Parks
… “at this time.”
Four4fore
From what I’ve seen they aren’t trading anyone.
Jrnomo100
Need to get pitching for next year.
Rsox
Arenado was probably not waiving his no-trade clause to go anywhere but LA and realistically the Dodgers can not afford to give up 4 pitchers to get him.
jasonthebuc
The Dodgers are stacked with pitching in the minors. They are on pace to potentially lose the most players ever in a Rule 5 draft, come December. They have more than enough prospect capital to pull off a trade like this.
Rsox
Since Sheehan, Miller, Grove and Stone are already on the MLB team (or at least have been) and are holding the rotation together. Pepiot has been hurt all year and Nastrini has already been traded how close are the rest of that stacked pitching to MLB ready that the Cardinals would want to give away Arenado for them?
l9ydodger
IMO, I think the Dodgers would be willing to trade 3 to 5 of these players, Gonsolin, Stone, Pepiot, Bruihl, Bruns, Taylor, Muncy, Pages, Ramos for Arenado, Flaherty or Montgomery, Hicks & one of either Edman or Carlson. Might even cost the Dodgers 6 players for 4 of the mentioned Cardinals.
Samuel
jasonthebuc;
The problem the Dodgers have had recently is that while they’ve been “stacked with pitching in the minors” for years now, they can’t seem to develop a starting pitching staff with most of those guys and keep them healthy.
Signing the mecurical Bauer (I’m taking about his pitching and attitude in the clubhouse) for all that money and years was the tipoff. This year has been no exception. Young pitchers from 3-4 years ago that one would think would be Dodger starting cornerstones for the next 5-10 years are pretty much all gone.
Tired reading about all the young, can’t-miss Dodges arms in the minors.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Well he would have looked good in an Orioles uniform
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Smart move on the Cardinals part. Arenado is probably a future HOF player. Keep him and Goldy together.

Cardinals GM comes out with this statement after the brilliant Friedman offers 1 top prospect, 1 mid tier prospect and chris Taylor only. We don’t need Nolan, he needs the dodgers and their GM knows it.
Four4fore
You’re probably right. Would have been interesting to know what LA really offered.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Instead we’re gonna trade Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks and others….
dodgerfan83
All I know is Nats said the same thing about trading Soto.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The difference is Soto had zero say in any trade. Arenado can Veto any and all trades.
avenger65
Soto wanted out of d.c. because they were so bad and entering a rebuild. Arenado obviously doesn’t want out.
iH8PaperStraws
That pretty much seals the deal. They may make a move or for players to fill out the roster for 2024, but they arent going to be type of players will help them win, especially in ‘25, ‘26, ‘27. Probably some 35+ old pitchers who used to be decent number 3 starters. It’s going to be a tough for the next 4-5 years.
iH8PaperStraws
and when Arenado realizes he back to what it was like in Colorado and his buddy Goldschmidt is gone, he’s going to force his way out of St. Louis just like he did in Colorado. we’ll be forced to trade him for some teams Austin Gomber because Nolan will have all the control. It’s already happened once. I knew this year and next year where going to sub .500 records, but even i had hope starting in 2025 and really good in 2026 for another long run .
CardsFan57
He no longer has the leverage of opt outs. That’s why Colorado traded him. They also agreed to send so much money because they were sure he would end the contract by opting out.
He can’t force his way out of town until his age 37 year.
iH8PaperStraws
Yes he can. All he has to do is publicly start saying he wants traded. Exactly like he did in Colorado.
Seamaholic
Dodgers didn’t offer enough.
OhioDodger
That is the key. No one is ponying up what they want. I would not give up a lot to take on the rest of that contract.
meangreandancingmachine
Mo in 24 hours: “We are not going to trade anyone. We feel like we can compete and win the NL Central this year.”
This one belongs to the Reds
Looks like the whole NL Central thinks that outside the Brewers who actually tried to improve.
George Vasios
Mozeliak: Cardinals are not trading Aronado. Aronado: Cardinals are trading Mozeliak.
Samuel
If you look at the recent history of the Cardinals, they had 2 big era’s of winning….
o When Whitey Herzog was hired as GM/Manager 1980-81.
o When Tony La Russa was brought in as manager to work with GM Walt Jocketty in 1996 (they had worked together in Oakland). That run went on pretty much right through the Mike Schilt era as manager.
In both cases the Cardinals and been thrashing around for years and sort of bottomed out.
It will taking something like that to occur before the owner takes the major steps needed. The fact that the team has been in the playoffs the past 4 years and been eliminated early in the first round in last 3 and has now fallen apart in 2023 with no injury excuse (although losing Yadi had a lot to do with the freefall) is not a good sign.
Devlsh
Given that this “seller’s role” is an unfamiliar one for the Cardinals and Mozeliak, I’m starting to get a little nervous whether he’s overplaying his hand.
They’re in a strong position, able to combine both rentals and a surplus of well regarded OF prospects without the need to dump payroll.
Don’t screw this up, Mo..
Butter Biscuits
There starting pitching next year will remind them of this mistake
Quadruple twins
Mozeliak needs to get fired one of the worst GMs in the game.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Cards should trade Goldie for young pitching. That would open up 1B for Walker who is miscast as an outfielder (Maybe miscast at 3B, too?).
The Marlins have a lot of SP prospects and could use an everyday 1B who is a lot better than Guriel or Cooper.
badco44
Kinda heard the same about Schurzer also!
