No team needs Cohen and paying for old players not performing to his expectations as an excuse to NOT spend money. When you’re paying to be the richest AND possibly oldest team in MLB — that’s a problem that any billionaire should see comin’. Cue Dennis Green, “they are who we thought they were.”

Sure, its probably cool to own one, and you have to be ultra rich to do so, but baseball is still a business and most owners will run it like one. In a “player away” situation, it would be a reasonable gamble to go beyond planned payroll because of the added revenue that may be returned if it works out. Otherwise, its reasonable to expect teams to spend at levels based on their revenue streams, which line up with market size. We won’t be seeing NY payroll in KC, CLE, or even HOU.

I can’t really decide what’s my favourite part of these chats. I’m a really big fan of when Steven shuts down stupid questions like what will it take to get Arenado? Or do you think the angels will attach Rendon with Ohanti? Lol basically calls them dumb without saying it. Or when someone insists a trade makes sense in the boards and continues to bring it up when everyone tells them over and over again it’s not going to happen and they change their name in the chat and ask and they get the same response. Hilarious.
No teams don’t need Cohen and 2023 Mets to not spend money, they should just look at the back half of all the current worst contracts in the sport. Look at the rays and say how is it possible they’ve run a successful franchise with a bottom payroll for nearly two decades now. If you need to sign multiple free agents to multiple year contracts just to make the playoffs you have no business signing them begin with.

Did you hear Dbacks and Orioles are looking into trading for Ohtani? I saw it on a respectable rumor website.

It’s the trades being shut down. It saves me from having to scroll past them and the responses to them in order to get to more interesting comments since it never seems like those proposals are limited to a single article’s comment section.

A question I was trying to get answered was I see a similar albeit not perfect example between football running backs and RP in baseball. A lot of them are under team control for too long before they get paid. My solution for RB would be to let them leave school early giving their careers aren’t as long. It’s not perfect but it would help.
RP in baseball particularly the guys with options are the guys getting their service time manipulating the most. Pitch bad, sent down, pitch good sent down need fresh arms. I don’t have a good solution to this problem other than adjusting some rules to put less emphasis on using multiple RP per inning thus the need for more.
I’d start by changing the 3 batter minimum to the 4 batter minimum. The goal being in two years 5 batter minimum? Why? Trying to force teams into developing RP who can pitch multiple innings and using less pitchers overall.

Solution is more incentive-laden contracts for rp (and rbs) but that opens a whole can of worms for the mlbpa.

I’ve thought of that as well but then every other position is going to be like what about us.
BasedBall
No one is stopping teams from signing guys to incentive laden deals. MLB GM’s don’t have to sign relievers to guaranteed deals, the rays build theirs from castaways and failed starters and always have one of the better bullpens in baseball.
Both the players and teams agree to every contract they sign.

“A lot of them are under team control for too long before they get paid.”
I’m not sure how incentive based deals are going to apply to this problem? When you’re still under team control, the team has no reason to negotiate that with you

I cringe if the O’s get seriously into Ohtani talks. I know they’re stacked deep, but to give up 2-4 prospects for a two-month-no-way-on-Earth-he’ll-sign-with-you player is too much.

Even if you win the WS?

How about Soto to Reds fro Encarnación-Strand, TJ Friedl and Connor Phillips.
dgonzo13
Hader and Grisham to Yankees for Dominguez, Thorpe and Selvidge. Maybe yes?

Whats up with Freudis Nova? Anybody know why he may have retired according to his MiLB transactions page?
