The Diamondbacks are having their best season in quite a while, setting them up to be deadline buyers for the first time in years. They haven’t finished above .500 since 2019 and haven’t cracked the postseason since 2017, but are currently 52-42 and in possession of a National League Wild Card spot. General manager Mike Hazen spoke with Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic about the upcoming August 1 trade deadline and how the club hopes to make bold moves to help out this year without significantly harming the future.
“There’s a difference between being aggressive and reckless,” Hazen said. “We’re not going to be reckless. We’ll be aggressive, even ultra-aggressive, but I feel like being reckless does not serve anyone’s interests, this year’s team or in the future.”
This year’s trade deadline is seemingly defined by general uncertainty, with various clubs hovering near the middle and having to make difficult decisions about buying or selling. With the expanded playoffs and weak Central divisions, very few clubs are clearly in contention or out of contention and many are in the middle. Not too long ago, the Diamondbacks were one of the few clear buyers, as they had been leading the National League West for much of the year. However, they’ve gone 2-8 over their last 10 games and are now behind both the Dodgers and Giants in the division, pushing them closer to that mushy middle area.
That doesn’t seem like it’s going to dissuade Hazen from making moves to bolster the club in the weeks to come. “I think based on the way this team is standing right now we should be looking at being aggressive at the deadline,” he said. “I’m expecting us to play Diamondback baseball for the next two weeks so we’ll be standing in the same spot or better, so, yeah, we’re going to behave that way.”
About six weeks ago, Hazen candidly admitted that pitching would likely be the club’s focus at the deadline. That’s not surprising given that the rotation has been fairly mediocre outside of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the latter of whom is on the injured list. The question for the D’Backs seems to be how much they are willing to give up in order to get that pitching. Given Hazen’s comments about being “aggressive” but not “reckless,” it seems fair to expect the club won’t be looking to deal its top prospects, such as Jordan Lawlar or Brandon Pfaadt.
That’s a defensible lane for the club to pick, given their current trajectory. They are built around a young core of players like Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo, Gabriel Moreno and others, perhaps setting them up to be in contention for many years to come. Hazen and the rest of his staff will surely want to increase the club’s chances here in 2023 but also don’t want to hamper the rest of their competitive window.
That being said, it seems that Hazen will have some willingness to trade players from their farm system, with their track record of player acquisition and development hopefully allowing them to replenish whatever is moved. “We have to be confident that we can do a lot of the things that we did to put this team together, which wasn’t just through signing big free agents and things like that,” he said. “We need to be confident that we’re going to be able to do that again. That allows you to take on the mindset of being a little more aggressive, that things aren’t irreplaceable. Part of not being one player away is also not (thinking) one minor league player is going to determine our fate as a team moving forward.”
Arizona has a challenging schedule between now and the deadline, playing strong clubs like Atlanta, Cincinnati, Seattle and San Francisco, with a three-game set against St. Louis their only matchup against a club that’s currently below .500. Another losing streak could perhaps downgrade the club from “ultra-aggressive” to merely “aggressive,” but it seems as though fans of the club should expect some kind of additions regardless.
Wherever their comfort level lands in terms of what they are willing to part with will then have an impact on what they can acquire. Lucas Giolito and Jordan Montgomery are some of the more obvious trade candidates, though both of those are rentals. Pitchers with extra control like Aaron Civale or Paul Blackburn could also be available, though the extra control will also lead their current clubs to seek larger returns in trade talks.
Stevil
Bryce Miller has 6 years of control following 2023 because of his late promotion.
If Arizona is willing to trade Lawlar, Seattle could potentially get them value in return.
Seattle just has to recognize that they’re sellers.
zack novotny
I’m guessing you’re a mariners fan…
Dbacks wouldn’t take that trade.
Stevil
Not one-for-one. But as centerpieces…

Here are my mock trades and please tell me how you’d feel.
Dbacks trade Fletcher and Davies for Bob Dalbec.
Dbacks trade Canzone and Walston for Hicks.
Dbacks trade De Los Santos, Walston, and Blaze Alex for Stroman.
Done
MLB Top 100 Commenter
My mock trade is Diamondbacks trade Josh Rojas inter-division to Rockies for a middle relief pitcher.
drasco036
Even as a Cubs fan, I feel like that is too much for Stroman. With that said, I’d do it in a heartbeat
Guest500
Thats a whole lot of nothing for Stroman. Cubs won’t go volume over quality for Stroman or Bellinger. Its gonna cost nothing less than a top 100 prospect for Hoyer to engage. They’re two of the best trade options available.
drasco036
Which top 100 prospect did the Cubs get for Rizzo while paying his entire salary? Bryant? Baez? Sure PCA developed into an amazing prospect but the Cubs got him because he only had a handful of games in the minors and was on the IL with what could have been a career altering injury.
I’d love to get Alex, he’s developing into a very solid player with serious pop. Gold glove caliber defender at third base to go along with the two up the middle? Yeah I’d love to see that next year. Kind of looks like a Matt Chapman type hitter
Guest500
The Cubs got Alcantara for Rizzo who Fangraphs had as a top 100. KB they got Kilian who was on pipelines top 100 by the offseason and got Canario. PCA top 100 by the end of the offseason. I’ll go on too, Robertson they got Ben Brown top 100 by the offseason on MLB Pipeline and Fangraphs, for Effross they got Wesneski, Fangraphs top 100 by the offseason.
And the thing is Bellinger is having a way better year than Rizzo KB and Baez were having, so yeah. They wont be taking a handful of garbage outside a teams top 10 lol
drasco036
So at the time of the trade the Cubs got 0 top 100 prospects. Got it. I’m not saying they were not solid returns, they are, but Alcantara, PCA, Kilian were all just outside of the top 100 and Alcantara and PCA were both very young.
The above mentioned trade has a guy who could be just like those player but is closer to being MLB ready in Alex. Walston is a very solid, Jordan Wicks type pitching prospect and De Los Santos has stupid power
Guest500
Depends what top 100 boards you looked at. Alcantara was o Fangraphs at the time. But the point is none of them were far off the top 100 to make an appearance just based off August and September minor league performances after they were traded. Not to mention how much better Bellinger has played than Rizzo KB and Baez when they were traded.

Snakes are spiraling. Check back in 12 games. I suspect a few tinker around the edges moves for a team a year ahead of schedule. Competing for the wildcard this season is a success. Snakes should do any heavy lifting in the offseason not at this deadline.
Mac Attack
Trading a couple of AA pitching prospects for a starter with an ERA under 4 (not Giolito) and maybe bench depth (Tommy Pham) might get them a playoff spot. Don’t screw it up! This team has a bright future.
YourDreamGM
If you have a chance to contend you should try to. It brings in more money. Just don’t make awful trades.
scottaz
SupremeZeus
So your definition of “spiraling” is the last 10 games? Every team slumps a bit, no team plays a perfect entire season. The Padres spiraled the entire 1st half of the season. The Dodgers spiraled from May to June. The Giants spiraled in June and early July. I’ll take the Dbacks 10 game spiral!
DonOsbourne
“Ultra-aggressive” must be just shy of “stupid spending” or whatever the Phillies call it.
SnakeWit
So in other words nothing of significance will be done. But for the love of God why do they keep Davies? He’s pure garbage. An absolute waste of a roster spot.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Davies will be gone by August 1st.
Wheeler Dealer
Sounds like Diamondbacks will be shopping in the discount section may I suggest Kyle Hendricks or Drew Smyly?
pohle
those guys would do a lot for the snakes
drasco036
If Hendricks rebounds from his last poor outing to have another strong start (or possibly two) before the trade deadline, Cubs are going to ask more for him than Stroman given the team option that Hendricks has for 2024.
personally, I think a pitch to contact guy like Hendricks would be a mistake for Arizona given the hitter friendly nature of their park.
King of Cards
Hendriks could be a nice addition for a contender.
pohle
the interesting thing about the reds and diamondbacks, is that with the solid composition of position players and prospect depth that both teams are pretty flush in currently, any pitching additions move the needle quite a bit. imagine if either team brought in, say, dylan cease. i dont think he will be available, but think about what pitchers of that caliber could do for these two burgeoning teams on the froth of their divisions. even players of lesser caliber, whether in the bullpen, back end of the rotation, or even a bat, keep adding to the pressure on the established winners, and would definitely make the end of this year more exciting
pohle
either team matches up well with the marlins and their stream of young pitchers, the tigers controllable bullpen, and the guardians fort of a rotation
Samuel
Those 2 teams – Reds and Diamondbacks – illustrate a point….
Throw the depth chart out and top thinking that a team needs 5 decent starters to get into the playoffs.
Both those teams have 2 quality starters and that’s it.
Cleveland is making a playoff run with their best veteran starters out, so the past 2 days they had one bullpen game and one in which a rookie whose innings they have to limit went 5 innings. Sure, the floundering Pirates were the opponent, but they gave up a combined one run in 2 games.
While 2021 and 2022 were heading this way, 2023 has now turned MLB into a bullpen league. Teams can win with 2 starters – both to get to the playoffs and once in them.
Every contending team will be looking for bullpen depth this trading deadline. Getting half-baked starters at high prices because there’s a shortage of them isn’t attractive. Teams will be looking to add 2 and even 3 bullpen guys – the cost both in players and remaining 2023 salary is far more cost effective.
Samuel
Along those lines….
Statistics have shown that in 2023 starting pitchers are throwing
far more hard pitches the first 2 times through the order – primarily 4-seam fastballs, but breaking pitches as as well. This is clearly at the direction of their coaching staffs. Almost all teams are depending on their bullpens in 2023 – there has been an endless flow of bullpen pitchers with rested arms being brought in from the minors and other teams.
stymeedone
Weren’t those minor league pitchers earning their call up by actually pitching? How did they get “rested?”

It was a nice run while it lasted for the snakes, but the Dodgers are the rulers, kings and of protectors of the NL West.
Stevil
The Dodgers’ reign might be coming to an end. They have 7 or 8 pending free agents, including most of their rotation, plus a handful of club options.
They’re a team that could look very different next season.
YourDreamGM
Most their free agents are old and like it there. If they want them back they got them. Or they won’t miss them. They can buy whatever they need next year. Still developing talent. Don’t look like they are going anywhere.
mlb fan
True. The Dodgers look different every couple of years, because seemingly, they understand you cannot sign everyone to a multi year, long term deal, thus players like Corey Seagar, Trea Turner, Trevor Bauer and Cody Bellinger have moved on in the last few years.

The Dbacks outplayed the Dodgers, Giants and Padres in the first half. All 4 teams have flaws, none is a perfect team. Whichever team makes the smartest moves at the trade deadline will be there right into October. I expect that team to be the Dbacks.
King of Cards
Where are the Diamondbacks fans?
Montgomery, Flaherty, Hicks and Stratton.
What you got?
Cardinals need a lefty hitting center fielder and pitching.

Would you, if you were a GM of any team in baseball, trade your #14 Prospect in a strong system for a rental? Neither would I.
King of Cards
Hey Scottaz Cardinals have won 4 in a row. I am thinking we don’t sell. Good luck doing whatever Diamondbacks fans do.
ChuckyNJ
“Where are the Diamondbacks fans?” Finding out where to see them on their new pop-up TV channel.
Motor City Beach Bum
Or call the Tigers for some short term playoff help (Erod and/or Lorenzen) and some pitching for next year and beyond….they have lots of it! Buy in bulk. It’ll cost you though.
dankyank
Lorenzen’s price might be lower than expected since he’s a rental. Blackburn could be obtainable for a package of prospects given Forst’s penchant for quantity.
Hazen wants a bargain; the trade deadline is known for overpays so that severely limits his choices.
stymeedone
That’s All-Star Lorenzen, so while he’s a rental, he will cost something decent.
scottaz
DamnYankee…I mean dankyank,
Hazen paid Jazz Chisholm to get Zach Gallen. Hazen paid Daulton Varsho to get Moreno and Gurriel
Neither of those was a “bargain”! I have no idea where you got that idea?
When the Dbacks stayed in first place in the NLW for almost the entire 1st half, Hazen said he would be aggressive adding to that team. Now that they have fallen off a bit, Hazen is saying he will be aggressive but not reckless. I don’t see any hint of seeking “bargains” in those two statements.
desertdawg
Really don’t expect a major splash deal but would not surprise me if the D’backs make a deal for a closer, maybe Bednar from Pittsburgh, then look for a back of rotation starter someone like Lance Lynn. But really hope they don’t overspend on a deal just to make a deal; they don’t have to, wait till the winter meetings… Just play the hand they started with this year; they have some future stars in the minors no need to waste them on a rental if you are really pointing to 2024.
King of Cards
Good luck with that plan
drasco036
Are we thinking of different Bednars? Because David Bednar would certainly be a major splash and would require a gross amount of overspending.
YourDreamGM
Has Rich Hill played for Arizona yet?
scottaz
Dbacks will trade for 1 or 2 back end of the bullpen arms. Example: trade with Royals for Scott Barlow and Carlos Hernandez. Dbacks could offer 3 or 4 major league ready players like Dominic Fletcher, Josh Rojas, Pavin Smith and/or Dominic Canzone.
King of Cards
I wouldn’t call Pavin Smith major league ready.
scottaz
King of Cards
Pavin Smith is already a major leaguer And a former First Round Draft Pick. You might not like him, but lots of teams would view him as an upgrade to their major league roster.
King of Cards
If Pavin Smith is a big leaguer then why isn’t he in the big leagues right now?
He’s so good he got demoted. Yes I am sure teams will be lining up for Pavin Smith.
scottaz
King of Cards
The Dbacks depth is so good, not everyone fits on the 26 man active roster. The starting 8 for the AAA Reno Aces are:
DH .322 OPS .985
SS .333 OPS .968
2b .335 OPS .968
3b .350 OPS .940
RF .314 OPS .914
LF .344 OPS .910
CF.275 OPS . 841
C .305 OPS .838
1b .283 OPS .849
10 Aces have been (5) or are (5) on the current Dbacks Active Roster. All of them could be/have been on the major league roster this year. This AAA team could give your Cards a rough time!
King of Cards
Lol
Tell you what. When October comes around and you are watching other teams succeed in the playoffs you can tell me more about how good your AAA team is.
That’s an offensively charged environment fella. Those stats are pumped up because of it.
scottaz
Yet all 5 players have come up from Reno and continued to hit over .300.
You are right that the PCL is extremely hitter friendly, but the reason the Dbacks stayed in first place throughout the first half was that every player brought up from AAA started hitting immediately.
scottaz
Wait! I’m watching the playoffs in October? Have you mistaken me for a Cardinals fan? Because I’m certain that team won’t sniff the playoffs in 2023!
King of Cards
I wouldn’t be so certain of that.
scottaz
Reckless spending by the Dbacks would be any of their Top 10 Prospects for a 1 year rental or short term improvement (i .e. this season). That list includes:
Jordan Lawler
Druw Jones
Brandon Pfaadt
Deyvision de Los Santos
Blake Walston
Landon Sims
Ivan Melendez
Blaze Alexander
Yu-Min Lin
Kristian Robinson
drasco036
I would agree with you that they shouldn’t trade away any of their top 100 for rentals but I disagree with the rest.
First, their prospect pool isn’t all that deep but more importantly, in the NL West, you cannot spit on a chance to make the playoffs. This is a division with deep pockets and the Diamondbacks rotation right now is razor thin.
Let’s be honest, do you really think the Dodgers, Giants and Padres are not going to come out guns blazing for Ohtani? Do you think they won’t be shopping in the upper tiers of free agency? I’m just saying, the playoffs next year are not a given.
scottaz
drasco
Good comments, appreciate your perspective.
I think the Dbacks are in an excellent position to do a “baseball trade”, rather than a rental for prospect trade, or a “buyer”/“seller” trade deadline trade. I listed the trade candidates that are major league ready or near major league ready, which is why I only listed AAA or major league assets.
Specifically, I’m looking for the Dbacks to do a quantity for quality trade with a team looking to fill multiple holes/upgrades on their roster by trading 1 or 2 quality players. One example is my trade scenario with KC above. I’m looking for the Dbacks to pull off 1 or 2 such “baseball trades”.
Which is why I’ve told Cards fans here that the Dbacks are looking for players a level above their players.
I think my trade bait list has several packages of quantity for teams looking to upgrade at specific positions.

You just said earlier that it would take Montgomery, Flaherty, Hicks and Stratton for Fletcher.
You have no credibility at all. You can say silly things its a free country. But now i cant take you seriously.
I hope the Diamondbacks stand and then miss out on a division championship by a game or 2. Then you can tell everyone how great your prospects are all offseason while other teams are chasing a championship.
scottaz
King of Cards
Just because I list a player as tradeable doesn’t mean I’d trade them for peanuts just to trade them. One, single rental, like Flaherty won’t command a Top 30 organizational prospect like Fletcher, but a package of all 4 of your list might get a Top 30 Prospect. Sorry if you don’t understand the difference between giving players away versus trading for some value. I hope your Cards overvalue these underperforming players who are playing on an extremely disappointing 2023 ballclub, so you will have the pleasure of seeing them drift into retirement or free agency with nothing in return to rebuild upon.
Ask me who I would give for any one of those players on your team and I would say one low minors flyer. I hope you can understand a bit better now. Commenters typically don’t need my comments spelled out in such detail for them to understand.
drasco036
Montgomery is good, he will demand a strong return. The rest of the mentioned cardinals players not so much but don’t tell that to Card fans. They hold onto faith that Tyler ONeil has trade value because he had a good year two years ago and are blind to the fact he cannot hit, cannot stay on the field and his defense has dropped off significantly.
scottaz
drasco,
This year’s trade market is really thin overall, but especially for pitching. There are so few absolutely “selling” teams, and so much demand for quality starting pitching and back end of the bullpen help.
In that environment, Montgomery looks like better quality than he actually is. Frankly, I wouldn’t be willing to trade a strong package or Top 100, or even Top 10 organizational player for any of the “good” starting pitchers on the early July list compiled on this site. Obviously all are rentals or big contract mutual option types, and as Hazen said in this article, the Dbacks aren’t going to spend assets unwisely. I think he was referencing every player on that early July list, and I absolutely agree with him. I’d rather see the Dbacks stand Pat and go with what is already there than pi$$ the top prospects away for marginal at best improvements to the current roster.
drasco036
I really like Montgomery, seems like a very solid upper middle of the rotation starter. Even as a rookie with the Yankees, he just seemed like a guy who good mound presence.
I hate when GMs/PBOs talking about “spending wisely” or the token “we have to be smart about…” it’s code for saying they are going to nibble and make marginal improvements. I’ve heard that stupid line come out Jed Hoyers mouth for years and what has all this intelligent spending gotten the Cubs? A bunch of marginal players.
I’m not saying that teams should “Preller” the crap out of their roster but you cannot expect to nibble unless you have a complete roster and marginal improvements are you need. I think Friedman is the best (worst) example about making marginal improvements mid-season and getting to sit back and watch other teams celebrate World Series titles. Of course, the one time he did push his chips all in they still didn’t deliver (Scherzer and Turner).
