The Marlins are planning to select the contract of infielder/outfielder Dane Myers prior to today’s game, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald (Twitter link). They’ll need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move to open a spot for Myers, who’ll be making his MLB debut.
Myers, 27, was a sixth-round pick by the Tigers in 2017 but made his way to the Marlins organization this offseason by way of the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. He’s had a monster season between Double-A and Triple-A, slashing a combined .335/.423/.533 with 13 homers, eight doubles, a pair of triples and an impressive 16-for-17 showing in stolen base attempts.
That production is all the more impressive when considering that Myers was drafted as a pitcher and spent the first three years of his pro career on the mound. He barely hit at all from 2017-19, didn’t play during the canceled minor league season in 2020, and has only been a position player since the 2021 season. He’s logged time in all three outfield spots this season and also played both infield corners.
Myers will give the Fish another right-handed bat to further deepen a lineup that is among the best in baseball versus southpaws. Marlins hitters have posted a combined .301/.350/.442 batting line against left-handed pitching this season — a major reason they find themselves leading the pack in the National League Wild Card chase.

I guarantee the corresponding move is DFAing Jeff Lindgren

Nope, it’ll be Jazz IL placement, unfortunately

Probably Jazz and his oblique after what happened yesterday

Although a Lindgren DFA does feel inevitable…

I’ve been monitoring Dane Myers’ career, and I’m impressed that he was able to cut down on his K’s. Good luck, young man!

He has improved a lot this year. Maybe it’s something the Marlins taught him that he never would’ve learned in Detroit?

Highly unlikely considering their complete ineptitude when it comes to developing their own hitters from top-down throughout the entire organization.

Cuban1 – things have changed this year. Clearly you haven’t been watching them.

You know their offense literally runs through 4 maybe 5 people, right? I dont know what team you’re watching, but this sure as hell still isnt a juggernaut offensively. Nor did they have anything to do with the development of Arraez, who is by far the driving force behind most of the team’s production.

It’s been a few years since Stanton, Realmuto, Ozuna, & Yelich were developed in-house. With the exception of Fortes, I don’t think any other position player on the current MLB roster was originally drafted or signed by the Fish. Thanks Derek & Gary… There was a time when there were high hopes for Bleday & Burdick but they might not even be decent AAAA players. I’m on team cuban1 on this one.

Cuban1 – Most good teams have 4-5 good hitters and the elite teams have 7-8… no one even said the Marlins are a juggernaut. All I’m saying is that they aren’t a joke like they were last year. Will they win the division? No but they can definitely make it as a wild card this year. They clearly are in need of another bat or two, in addition to a starting pitcher, to even be considered a true contender imo
By the way… De La Cruz, Jesus Sanchez, Soler were all in the organization last season and performed terrible.. and they performing decently this year. Soler is an all star! Gotta give some type of credit to the coaching staff I would think.

Perhaps, Hemlock. I think the Tigers give up on some players too soon. Isaac Paredes comes to mind, although he was consistently better than Myers in the minors.

Austin Meadows has not turned out to be the player they thought they were getting.
I think if the Tampa Bay Rays make a trade offer, you declined it and then play whatever players they’re requesting immediately. They obviously know things that other teams do not.
