Last Thursday, there was little question about the Angels’ deadline trajectory. Los Angeles had already acquired Eduardo Escobar and Mike Moustakas to help around the infield after injuries to Gio Urshela and Zach Neto. They were firmly in the American League Wild Card hunt and within shouting distance of the Rangers in the AL West.
It’d have been hard to draw up a worse week than the one that followed. First, the Halos lost Brandon Drury to the injured list, further thinning the infield. A much bigger blow came on Monday when Mike Trout left the game with a hand injury sustained on a swing. Subsequent imaging revealed he fractured the hamate in his left wrist, required surgery, and will miss four-to-eight weeks.
If Trout’s injury weren’t bad enough, Shohei Ohtani and Anthony Rendon were both banged up on Tuesday. Ohtani left his start with a blister on his pitching hand, one outing after a cracked fingernail affected him during his previous pitching appearance. Rendon, just back from an IL stint, fouled a ball off his shin and should know by tomorrow whether he’ll go back on the shelf.
As the injuries have mounted, the team’s performance has cratered. The Halos were swept by the Padres this week and have dropped seven of their last 10. They’re just above .500 at 45-44 going into a two-game set against the Dodgers to close out the first half. The team has gone from a clear deadline buyer to a potential fringe contender in a matter of days.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Angels are informing rival teams they’ll take the next few weeks to gauge their deadline plans. Most notably, Heyman writes that Halos’ officials “seem to be leaving open the slight possibility” of making Ohtani available.
That’s not to say an Ohtani deal is likely, of course. Heyman suggests there remains a fair bit of skepticism around the league that owner Arte Moreno would sign off on that kind of move. Moreno reportedly pulled Ohtani from the trade market last summer, and Angels’ officials have publicly shot down the notion of moving him in the months since then. Just two weeks back, general manager Perry Minasian called it “self-explanatory” that Ohtani would not be on the trade market. The baseball operations leader certainly wouldn’t have foreseen things going downhill as quickly as they have since that point, however.
Bad as things have gone lately, the Angels are by no means buried. They’re 3 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race, although they’d need to jump three teams to grab a spot. They’re 6 1/2 out in the division, where Texas has hit a cold spell of its own. Playing well coming out of the All-Star Break could put to rest any speculation about selling.
They’ll have a fairly tough slate to start the season’s unofficial second half. The Halos host the Astros and Yankees — two teams currently in possession of Wild Card spots — in three-game sets out of the Break. They’ll then host the Pirates before road series in Detroit, Toronto and Atlanta through the August 1 deadline.
Ohtani would obviously be the far biggest name the Angels (or any other team) could shop at the deadline. It’s possible they wind up fringy enough contenders they’re willing to take offers on other short-term players while keeping Ohtani in the fold.
Aside from the two-way superstar, the Halos don’t have many impending free agents who’d bring back a notable return. Matt Moore has pitched well but is currently on the injured list with an oblique strain. Hunter Renfroe is making nearly $12MM and hitting .249/.295/.456 on the season. The Halos could look to flip either Escobar or Moustakas themselves, though they’d each have fairly modest appeal.
Samhaggertyplayoffhero
Then the moustakas and Escobar would be for nothing if they don’t buy at the deadline
Simm
They can trade both of them as well. Not that either is worth much.

Hahaha!

Jo Adell proves he is the next Mike Trout over the rest of this season, Ohtani signs a lifetime deal with the Angels before the season ends and the Angels earn a wild card and go on to win the World Series! What are the odds of all this happening?
gbs42
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance” odds.
Motorbreath
Terribly bad
pando8888
Ohtani should tell the Angels to trade them and get the most value back and then tell the Angels he will resign with them next year! Win! Win! For both sides. As a Yankee fan I would hate this!
pando8888
Trade him not them
nukeg
Exactly what Chapman did with the Yankees / Cubs swap.
pando8888
That was my exact thought! They would be stupid not to do it, if they could get a side commitment from Ohtani!
Mehmehmeh
It’s not a win for Ohtani to be with LAA next year.
i like al conin
Unless the payroll increases. And really, that’s a primary reason he’d re-sign anyway.
MoneyBallJustWorks
the payroll is not the problem it’s the use of it. garbage 3B who never plays, still a weak pitching staff with no true ace.
i like al conin
You made my point. The payroll is the problem because that 3B isn’t going anywhere and they need better players. They’re stuck.
Halo11Fan
One bad contract is not breaking any team with a 200 million payroll.
Horrible bullpen, yes. One bad contract. No.
User 1389138024
It’s not one bad contract. Rendon and yes Trout. As we did with Pujols, we will be paying him for the next 7 years as if he was his first 7 years. When healthy (which he hasn’t been for the past 3 year at least) he is worth it by baseball standards but his best and healthiest years are behind him. But the point really isn’t payroll or contracts. It’s how many DH’s can you have on your roster. The DH spot requires flexibility when you have veterans like Trout and Rendon. Ohtani doesn’t give them that. Bottom line is they haven’t won with this group and without better supporting talent they never will. Remember what it took for Jordan to finally win and he was at the top of his game. Trout is on the downside and Ohtani is fragile.
Halo11Fan
Trout is not a DH. Rendon is.
Ortiz was a DH. Edgar was a DH. Using the DH to add a hitter to the lineup and not just to give players a rest is a sound strategy.
It helped win the Angels a World Series Wooten and Fullmer didn’t play much defense.
My point is, which you seem to agree, it’s more than one contract.
All these teams have one thing in common…a rotten bullpen.
Since 2015, the Angels pen is 23rd in WPA. This year they are 21st. When they can screw up a game, they usually do.
WeggieJackson44
Is it truly a rotten bullpen or the over and misuse of it that is rotten?!?! Nevin needs to go. Bring in whomever you want to play wherever you want and Nevin will screw it up in the lineup and in the way he uses his pitching. It won’t change until he’s gone and his supposed hitting coaches whose resumes hilights include being in his wedding are sent packing.
Halo11Fan
Nevin doesn’t help…truer words were never written.
nukeg
Wondering aloud if the Angels could trade Ohtani and Rendon together. We all know Rendon would suddenly be healthy and rake, but Lord knows he won’t do that in Angel red.
I would trade Ohtani for a Snickers bar if it meant getting out from that Rendon contract.
Yes I know nobody would be that dumb, but the Angels did pick up Vernon Wells entire contract. Stranger Things have happened.
Bill nd
Like the Yankees did with Chapman to the Cubs?
DUDDUS
Yeah except you ohtani wants to play for a contender so he won’t sign with either team…
Rsox
Except he can’t promise them that. If the Angels offer $450 million and another team offers $500 million do you think he passes on the money because he made a promise? Very few teams can sign Ohtani to a record setting mega deal and still be competitive and the Angels aren’t one of them
Bartolo’s 2nd family
For the love of all things holy they need to trade Ohtani. Arte Moreno is becoming the Al Davis of baseball and they continue to run one of the worst franchises in the sport in a big market area.
nukeg
Trout needs DH at bats. Surround Mike with young talent. They are way overdue for building a core. The Os, Jays, Diamondbacks, Rays all have solid young cores. And guess what, they win. Who would’ve thought.
I’m an Angels fan who loves Ohtani, but it’s about the name on the front, not the back. Get as much as you can. Now.
The Big Yo
The orioles are in contention, they have 8!!!!! Prospects logged in the top 10. They have the nicest ballpark in the game(that actually makes a difference) and he’s a rental. Give the angels 3 of your top 8 and a starting pitcher. World Series written alllll over it
nukeg
The Os would be a great fit for Ohtani to finish out 2023. Shock the East. Many would argue they don’t have a shot to resign him, but it’s about taking advantage of a unique opportunity. Now.
Simm
They aren’t going to trade away that much for the months of Ohtani:
Simm
Teams that would trade for him. Padres, rangers, dodgers, Mets, Phillies, Yankees, blue jays.
Only teams that would give up the amount of prospects for Ohtani are teams that are all in.
You can count out the young and up and coming teams.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Big Yo, I’m not going to say that’s too much for Ohtani because it probably isn’t; but I don’t think the Orioles should trade that much for a rental, regardless of how talented he is.
Joe says...
Cashman doesn’t like to deal with his top 3 to 5 prospects. That takes them out of the equation.
He’ll be looking in the former all-star past his prime and the scratch and dent section of the trade market. And ultimately wondering why they went another year without a championship.
Rsox
Preller doesn’t hsve the prospects to get it done. He’s “Old Mother Hubbard” and not even Vaughn’s in the cupboard…
Rsox
This. And he would be demanding the Angels pay 100% of his remaining salary
Halo11Fan
He may not like to trade them but the only way Ohtani signs with the Yankees is if he plays there for two months and loves it.
Otherwise it’s likely the Dodgers.
Simm
Preller has plenty of prospects left to get two months of Ohtani.
Halo11Fan
The Padres prospects are too far away.
From the Dodgers Vargas and Miller is something I would pursue.
Simm
That makes some sense though merrill is getting pretty close. He is as about as good as any prospects out there and would give the angles a lefty SS bat which is about 1 year away. Not a lot of shortstops coming available soon.
Halo11Fan
The Angels have a shortstop.
I’m not a minor league expert, not even close. Fangraphs is pretty much the extent of my knowledge. That said. Merrill is great.
Shortstop and catcher are the only two positions the Angels have young talent. There are two many other places they don’t.
Simm
Shortstops are the best athletes and can play anywhere.
Halo11Fan
Mos5 can play anywhere, but most of their value comes at short.

“Trout DH at bats”…You gotta keep in mind it was an “at bat” that got Trout hurt. Mike Trout has now entered his injury decline yrs and will now be injured each yr, much more than in the past. For the most part, the Angels have squandered the opportunity to win with Mike Trout in his prime and the chances of winning with him in his sub prime are greatly diminished.
haighwiser
I agree, let Trout mentor a young core as he had a great mentor in Pujols. I also agree to put him at DH, he ran into the wall earlier in the year trying to rob a home run and it seemed to me that’s when his hitting took a dive.
Sealbeach Comber
I’d like to see Trout mentor younger players the way Torii Hunter mentored him. AP was too much about himself being royalty compared to the rest of the roster….bad mojo.
Omarj
The way its looking, they have to win 43 of the final 73 games to be at 88 wins which is about what it takes to make the final WC. That’s close to 15 wins per month. Unless they excel at one thing, avg won’t cut it. If they just play it until the deadline I don’t like their chances. If they add sooner vs later (i.e. pitching), they could make some noise.
Omarj
Angels had some serious bad luck this year but have young talent and could retool this deadline and over off-season. I wouldn’t rule out a massive deal for Ohtani with a 1 yr opt out or asks to be traded allowing Halos to recoup something if next year they’re outside looking in. Ohtani is very unconventional as a person. He’s been good to the Angels and this does help the organization. He’s always been an outlier
Rsox
What bad luck? Rendon has been chronically injured since joining the team and Trout is will now have missed significant time in 5 of the last 6 full seasons.
This team needs to scrap the Infield (though Neto looks decent) move Trout to an OF corner and give him more DH AB’s to help limit the wear and tear on his body and trade Ohtani for a mega package to get a rebuild/retool under way. Moreno will not do that though because Ohtani IS his ticket sales and merchandise sales
Omarj
You can’t see the forest from the trees. Urshela, Ohoppe, Neto, Moore, Rodriguez. Then other unique issues with Walsh and Stassi. Sorry but there’s more than the hot take media you’re subscribing to. This year had a ton of promise. Sure the team should’ve been better but now they have the talent, and crap happens, and everyone is out for blood. But this nucleus and organization has potential even with some nagging items like Rendon.
User 1389138024
How many playoff appearances? ZERO
Be a fan but be realistic.
Rsox
Any “promise” this season had died when Arte decided not to sell
DGHalos714
It’s a tough spot to be in. The only way we should keep Ohtani is if an extension is done before the deadline. If not then get as much and the best deal for him (looking at you Dodgers) and plan for the next few seasons. If we can’t win with him now what makes anyone think we can in the next few years? We are snake bitten and just can’t have nice things. As much as I hate to say it…he deserves a better team and management around him.
i like al conin
Good article but it doesn’t mention Moreno told the media 2 weeks before Opening Day that he had yet to talk with Ohtani about a contract extension. That says it all and the MLB media need to follow up on that. Moreno didn’t even try to lock him up before most players cut off negotiations.
bkbk
Lol, you see the wild leap you took at the end
Halo11Fan
Does anyone truly expect Moreno to answer that question honestly.
From Politicians to actors talking about their movies, I’m just saying what public figures say to the press is meaningless.
abc123baseball
Ohtani is not going to be traded. I don’t think any of us have a grasp on how much of a financial boon it is to have a global superstar play for your team. This is a big part of why Ohtani’s next contract is going to be shockingly huge. Tremendous impact on and off the field, every game, every day.
haighwiser
I wouldn’t be surprised if he re-signs and then the rest of the team will suck every year because Arte won’t be willing to go near the luxury tax. It will be Ohtani, Trout, and Rendon (for his monthly appearance) with a bunch of outdated veterans and young players not fully developed that fail from being moved up too early..I.e. Joe Adell.
User 1389138024
So basically what we have had and one since signing Pujols. I agree!
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Free Ohtani!
Rbiggs2525
I do not know why the MLB doesn’t negotiate contracts before trade deadline’s . If a team was able to have a contract in place for Ohtani it could change the Angels future. The difference between a rental and a long term asset is probably 3-4 top 100 prospects.
Appalachian_Outlaw
If the Angels could sign Ohtani -and I’m not saying they cannot- there is no way they should trade him. The only reason you entertain it is if the season is lost and you feel he is going to leave at the end of it.
This one belongs to the Reds
After all, he signed there originally for a reason. I hate to burst the East Coasters bubble but he’s not leaving the West Coast, even if he signs elsewhere. It’s not all about money to the Japanese.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I don’t think he signs anywhere on the East coast either. He’s going to go where he’s comfortable and wants to be, and for a lot of Japanese players those teams are on the west coast .
With Ohtani, he’s easily going to fetch 400m at least. At that point does more money even matter? I don’t think it’s going to be a bidding war so much as it will come down to which city he likes and which franchise best sells him on fit.
bshane229
1. He isnt re-signing with the Angels
2. They should trade him asap after the break
rememberthecoop
They aren’t trading Ohtani. Period. End of sentence.
mgauthier8
Who says no?…. Angels trade Otani to the Reds….. Reds get Otani Angels get Elly De La Cruz… yes 1 for 1.
Otani is a rental but would make the Reds a serious contender, and can you imagine him hitting in Cincinnati? And with Elly going to the Angels they get a dynamic player for 6 years. Who says NO?
ScottBoras
Elly De La Cruz, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Noelvi Marte for Ohtani and Ward
Rsox
Small market Reds would be better off with the 6 years of De La Cruz over the 2 months of Ohtani. Plus you aren’t getting Ohtani on a straight up 1-1 trade no matter who you offer
mgauthier8
So who would say no?
Rsox
I don’t imagine that either Kroll or Minasian would seriously consider asking the question. But for arguments sake both
Halo11Fan
The team is below average at every position. In three years Perry has done nothing to help this staff and the bullpen is still awful.
Trade Ohtani, and clean house. New GM and manager.
nukeg
Perry is just the latest captain on the Titanic. This team is the result of Arte focusing on the name on the back of the jersey (and selling that jersey) rather than the front. Add in terrible scouting (esp in Latin America), huge FA misses, and constant injuries and we have what we see now.
Halo11Fan
The Angels can fire their GM and manager. Arte is not going to fire himself, so I don’t even consider that when discussing what this team should do,
Arte should write the checks, stay out of the way, and replace Nevin and Minasian.
It’s a three headed snake and they all need to be replaced. But in the choices that can be done, Nevin and Minasian need to go.
prov356
That’s where I disagree with you. It’s not a three headed snake. It’s a one headed snake that gives the orders to Minasian. EVERY GM Moreno has employed has done exactly the same thing over 20 years to “build” this team. It’s Moreno, not the GMs. Unhindered, I think Minasian can do what he did in Atlanta.
Nevins is knucklehead regardless of the owner. He’s either making stupid in-game decisions or getting tossed for his temper.
Halo11Fan
I don’t think Arte is giving orders about the rotation, bullpen, Bachman to Neto. Maybe Syndergaard and or Iglesias, but not much else. I
The finger prints on Moreno moves are not difficult to spot.
Minasian has made poor moves and you can’t pin those on Moreno.
nottinghamforest13
No. It will have no impact whatsoever. They’ll pretend like none of these things happened and proceed with cognitive dissonance.
HalosHeavenJJ
Arte won’t retreat or surrender this year. He’s too proud and stubborn.
Halo11Fan
Other than Ohtani, can you name a single position where the Angels are above average? And of course the bullpen stinks.
Trade Ohtani. Get a GM that can actually improve the staff and bullpen. Get a manager that can manage a bullpen.
That will help a great deal.
I’m still reeling at how Nevin blew the KC game, that was the beginning of the end. The bullpen is bad, but Nevin has made it horrible.
orange2001
Halo11 – are you referring to the roster right now or when the team is healthy?
When healthy, I think they have above average players at SS (Neto), C (O’Hoppe), 2B (Drury), and OF (Trout). Besides Ohtani, of course.
Starting pitching, Ohtani and Detmers are frontline pitchers. Sandoval and Canning are decent backend pitchers. Bullpen is a mess, as we know.
Halo11Fan
Right now of course. I’m saying they can’t stay in contention.
I have no issues with the top of the rotation, Minasian has done a horrible job on the backend and a horrible job on the pen.
If they can get good talent for Ohtani, they need to take it. With a good GM and Manager and a couple good moves, this team can still be competitive.
But Minasian has had three years, and the major league moves he has made have sucked. People can spin that, but they can’t deny it.
orange2001
“I’m still reeling at how Nevin blew the KC game, that was the beginning of the end.”
Which one? He blew two KC games.
Halo11Fan
Nevin has blown many many games, including two loses to KC. But the one a couple weeks ago was the real killer.
HalosHeavenJJ
The injuries to Urshela and Neto were the beginning of the end.
Immediately meant the team needed to rely on Rendon and Rengifo.
Nevin blowing games certainly didn’t help.
Halo11Fan
Urshela wasn’t very good. Neto is missed.
And I’ve been saying for literally years that Rengifo is not very good. Why won’t people listen to me? 🙂
HalosHeavenJJ
Urshela is decent. And most importantly he was available when Rendon wasn’t. Solid glove, high contact, low strikeout guy is basically Rendon-lite.
While he’s not great his absence meant we had to rely on Rendon or face a steep drop to Rengifo.
Once Neto comes back I’d imagine Escobar takes over at third. But for now we’re pretty much forced to play Rengifo and/or Fletcher every day.
Halo11Fan
Urshela is a stop gap. A team should not be so bad that it misses Urshela.
I think Rengifo should be non-tendered.
As far as Neto. He’s missed.
Just to add, I was one of the few to not endorse the Fletcher extension. That was a big mistake. Full disclosure… I did like the Stassi extension.
Bobby smac9
If the Angels trade veterans for prospects, then Ohtani walks at years end. QO will be offered. They’ll need to add and make a run for it. Otherwise he’s gone.
Halo11Fan
Ohtani is going to walk anyway. He’ll go to the Dodgers. He won’t even have to move. And he gets to play for a winner. M
That name is already taken
Just like you probably had Ohtani signing with the Yankees, Dodgers or Mariners when he first came over. Unless you are Ippei, your guarantees are meaningless.
Halo11Fan
Actually I didn’t. I had him signing with the Ms, and the Angels were #2 in my prediction thread.
I couldn’t understand why everyone was discounting the Angels.
But nice strawman. Argue a position I never took.
CaseyAbell
I saw that story from Jon “Arson Judge” Heyman and figured there’s no way Ohtani gets traded. Then I saw a story from Jon Paul Morosi that says Ohtani is staying with the Angels. So now I’m starting to think he will get moved.
Life is so complicated.
Sealbeach Comber
The Angels are the poster child for top-heavy, unbalanced teams built for show instead of winning. Weak scouting. Weak development. Marque players paid for past performances, with bargain bin guys to round out the roster. The money made goes back to Arte’s bank account in AZ. The fans in Anaheim haven’t seen a playoff win since 2009 despite Mike Trout putting up GOAT numbers in his cost controlled years.
Hopefully Arte eventually sells the team to someone who gives two cents about the community. Until then, it really doesn’t matter how badly the team mis-handles the Ohtani situation.
But, in Arte’s defense, he did lower beer prices 20 years ago.
DevoPettis
Typical Angels. By waiting 2-3 weeks teams won’t offer as much as they would today, and then they can give the alibi that the offers weren’t good enough.
Halo11Fan
I don’t think the value will change.
DevoPettis
Either way, that’s what they’ll say.
DevoPettis
W the Juan Soto trade he rejected the extension and made it clear. It didn’t last til Aug due to hard bargaining from the Nats. It’s hard to believe they’ll wait 3 weeks, and then put a deal together quickly of that magnitude.
Edp007
Can you do sign and trade in mlb ? Or allow sho to negotiate a deal with the receiving club then make a trade ?
Guess not
User 1389138024
Trout and Rendon have missed significant time the past 3 years now. Rendon has 3 more years and Trout 7. They both need to DH at least once a week. This will be impossible if the Angels resign Ohtani. They aren’t winning with him, how do you justify not trading him. Spend the money and build a team not an attraction.
KingSall77
“Do or do not, there is no try”. Master Yoda
carllafong
If they lose the next 10 of 12 which is likely, they will trade many. Escobar, Moustakas, Ward, Renfro, Drury, Moore, Devenski, Walsh, Regnifo, Fletcher and maybe even someone out of their starting rotation– this doesn’t mean they’ll move them all, but they have to be open to getting something rather than nothing– especially for Ohtani.
Angels & NL West
With injuries and under performance, it takes a 40-man roster to navigate a 162 game season. To Perry’s credit, the Angels 40-man, pre injuries, was as deep as its been in several years. That said, there’s still work – acquisition and development – to be done throughout the minor league system. And most teams would suffer given the injuries the Angels have endured to date.
