The Tigers have released infielder Jermaine Palacios and reliever Jace Fry, according to an announcement from their Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. Neither player had been on the 40-man roster, so they won’t be exposed to waivers. They each hit the open market and can seek out new opportunities.
Palacios joined the Detroit organization on an offseason waiver claim from the division-rival Twins. The Tigers non-tendered him almost immediately but brought him back on a minor league contract. The righty-swinging infielder has played the year in Toledo but gotten out to a woeful start offensively. Over 152 trips to the plate, he was hitting .176/.232/.352 while striking out 31.2% of the time.
The 26-year-old had a far better showing with Minnesota’s Triple-A club last year. Palacios had hit .283/.341/.462 with 14 homers over 102 contests. That earned him his MLB debut — first as a COVID substitute, then as an official contract selection in early September. He hit .143/.184/.229 during his first 30 MLB contests. Detroit acquired minor league infielder Joe Rizzo from the Marlins this morning, ostensibly pushing Palacios out of the mix.
Fry, a left-hander, inked a minor league deal in February. He’d been trying to work back to the majors for the first time since 2021. Fry made seven appearances but landed on the minor league injured list with elbow inflammation at the end of April. He hasn’t pitched in six weeks. The 29-year-old has appeared in parts of five big league campaigns, all with the White Sox. He owns a career 5.04 ERA with a 27.3% strikeout rate and 14% walk percentage in 139 1/3 frames.
Additionally, Toledo announced that veteran reliever Trevor Rosenthal is beginning a rehab assignment at Low-A Lakeland. The right-hander signed a minor league pact on the heels of two consecutive seasons lost to injury. He pitched twice for Toledo before landing on the IL with a sprain in his throwing elbow. It now seems he’s in position to build back towards competitive game action.

It seems like Scott Harris upgrades the Toledo roster more than the Tigers roster.
Why won’t he release Schoop or any of the other guys that are hitting below .200?
Ejemp2006
Scott Harris starts winner culture in minors and builds a talent cream that floats up to majors. It will take him at least two more years to undo the damage done from last regime. Ouch for Avila, ouch.
At this point, I’d send Baez and Schoop out with a prospect just to clear deck of bad juju vets. Also, tell Miggy, “hello, thank you, with all love, you are done, we will pay you rest of contract as retirement bonus. But your iconic pressence coupled with bad performance is bringing whole team down.”
dragonfan96
Just have Miggy ride it out and sit and collect his gifts from other teams and he can coach the younger players
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Miggie should bat last, as in 2 out in the 9th…see how many gifts he gets……

Harris can’t turn 7 years of Avila around in 6 months lets check back in 2025 it’s a bad team & it had the worst organization in sports!

So sick of the Tigers sucking. Another 5 year “rebuild” coming. Wish they did it correctly the first time like the Orioles, Diamond backs, and Reds. Avila should never be let back into Comerica. Brutal
YEP
Sox will resign Fry.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Burger Fry and Colas. That’s one happy meal

Well played, Theo!

I thought Palacios looked interesting in the offseason when they signed him but that AAA line is putrid. After a rough start Fry pitched pretty well in the spring and looked interesting. Too bad they didn’t work out. I don’t blame Harris for grabbing these guys. He is trying to find “diamonds in the rough” to complement future FA signings and player development like he did in SF. I’d certainly take someone like Thairo Estrada who he grabbed off another team’s scrap heap and is now their starting 2B. They won’t all work out but if you get one useful player out of 10 why not. If they can get Rosenthal up and he looks good I can see them shipping him off at the deadline.
For Love of the Game
Look at how well McKinstry has worked out. When they don’t, cut ’em.

Detroit just got swept by Philadelphia, but just barely, certainly not befitting as high a payroll as they have or the quality of players they have up an down the line up. Recently traded guys like Clemons from Detroit, and Maton from Philadelphia factored big in the series for their new teams.
I like what Detroit is showing even though they are now 8 games and counting under .500 their greatest deficit of the season. Still they’ve made progress with all the injuries they once again have. Spending big money is not the key to building a team in this new era, as a lot of teams are showing us this year. Next year will be better, and a lot of Detroit’s youths, and castaways are getting a chance to prove they belong in the major leagues.
Sure if baseball had a real commissioner he could have created a position of player manager for guys like Molina, and Cabrera to continue to be on the team getting paid while not counting against the roster, he could have done that. If baseball had a real commissioner Galarraga would be awarded his perfect game that had 28 straight outs.
Next year the Tigers will be a lot better, as they are a lot better this year than last. Edge of the seat baseball like last night was cool even in the loss. They are not that far off of being in the hunt every year again. I’ll be glad when the hyphenated Malloy comes up so I don’t have to see his name mentioned as the next savior. Still until some spaces open up, or perhaps guys are cut right away there will probably not be new additions to the roster. They have to evaluate what they have on it now, before dropping anyone.
The Tigers are real close so that’s a positive. They are working through it all right now in a positive way. The new administration gets their first draft soon, so that will give a indication of what they perceive they have or need to add. When Miguel retires the Mike Ilitch era comes to the end, and a new one begins. Were all behind our baseball team go get em Tigers.

The have scored 20 less runs that any other team. In the league. This team isn’t better then last year, and if they don’t spend money on real Major league talent they can’t evaluate the younger guys. This organization hasn’t developed a semi annual all star hitter since Travis fryman. The minors isn’t going to develop real talent in years, so you have to go out and spend money just to get to a average base line.

I wish Harris would show some sign that he’s competant. Of This off-season’s cuts, only Victor Reyes is not on a ML roster and doing well. Candelario, Harold, and Willi are all doing well for their new teams, better than anything on Detroit. Of his signings, Lorenzen, Boyd, Shreve, Wingenter, Holton, Nevin, Ibanez, McKinstry, Palacios, Fry, Pacheco, Weatherspoon, Walker, Peters, Logue, Hanifee, Goudou, Rosenthal, Bristo, Hembree, Alvarez, etc… ,only Lorenzen, Holton, and McKinstry are positives. He traded Jimenez for Henry-Malloy, but they won’t call him up because he can’t field. He trade Soto and Clemens for Vierling, Maton, and Sands. Who would have thought Cody would be the best player from that group? At least Avila would have tried to actually improve the team.
For Love of the Game
Patience, Grasshopper. I’ll take McKinstry over either Castro or Candy. He’s another Whit Merrifield.
rubenrosario
Over candy u crazy Harris just didn’t want to win candy is doing better then whole team
Rite now we just left that Piece go smh
Robert Pierce
Candy isn’t good, he is hitting barely over the league average OPS. His 8 year career he has 3 years over 1 war. He is 29 no longer a player with potential, I’d rather take a shot at a younger player.
For Love of the Game
And hold your praise for Avila. His trades and FA signings were disastrous. Wouldn’t you love to reverse the Paredes for A. Meadows trade?
ThonolansGhost
Harold Castro is having a horrible season.
Motor City Beach Bum
If you like those guys so much maybe you should cheer for Colorado, Minnesota or Wasington. None of them was a long term solution, including Candelario who I really like too. If the team doesn’t continue to show improvement next year then maybe we have a problem.
Robert Pierce
They could do a literal swap with anyone and get better hitting. They better invest some money
stymeedone
I’m just disgusted with how little Harris did to add to what he had. Harold, Willi and Candy would not be long term solutions, but neither are Ibanez, McKinstry, and Maton. Those former players would make watching this year, easier to stomach.
