The Rockies and Tigers swung a minor trade this afternoon as Detroit acquired the services of right-hander Blair Calvo in exchange for cash considerations. Calvo had been designated for assignment by the Rockies earlier this week to make room for catcher Jorge Alfaro on the 40-man roster. To make room for Calvo on their own 40-man, the Tigers announced they have designated righty Braden Bristo for assignment. Calvo has be optioned to Triple-A.
Calvo made his MLB debut for the Rockies earlier this season, recording a single scoreless outing during his lone major league appearance. That outing stands in sharp contrast to what has been a brutal 2023 campaign for Calvo at the Triple-A level. In 23 innings of work for Colorado’s Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque, the righty has been shelled to the tune of a 7.43 ERA, though a .413 BABIP and a strand rate of just 55.3% both indicate Calvo has pitched better than his disastrous results would indicate.
Going forward, Calvo figures to act as optionable bullpen depth for the Tigers, whose relievers sport a roughly middle-of-the-pack ERA of 3.85 despite covering the third most innings in the AL with 273 1/3 innings worked. As the Tigers gear up for the second half of the season, relief depth provided by hurlers like Calvo could allow Detroit to keep their relief corps fresh.
As for Bristo, the 28-year-old righty made his major league debut this season as well. To this point, he’s made three appearances in the majors during his time with the Rays and Tigers, each of which lasted multiple innings. In seven career innings of work, Bristo has posted a 2.57 ERA and 3.55 FIP with five strikeouts against four walks. Should he clear waivers, the Tigers will have the opportunity to outright him to the minor leagues, where he would continue to serve as multi-inning bullpen depth without requiring a 40-man roster spot.

Awesome, now the Rockies have three veteran catchers and one less bullpen arm. I have been defending them for a LONG time now, but this move is just hard to understand.
stymeedone
They may have just lost Calvo on waivers (possibly to Detroit) if they did not make a trade. Beats getting nothing. I don’t understand why the Tigers didn’t just keep what they had since he had done ok.
hiflew
Oh I understand that. My problem is with DFAing him to begin with in order to add a third veteran catcher to the 26 man roster. Austin Wynns should have been DFA’d instead if they really wanted to bring up Alfaro.

Two bullpen transactions in one day. Harris is bringing in arms in for depth whi h is good. Hopefully we can keep Brusto.

There it is again. Cash consideration pluralized for no reason.

It’s more than one dollar 🙂
hiflew
Not necessarily. Announcer for the Rockies, Ryan Spilborghs, tells a story of the Rangers acquiring him for cash near the end of his career. He found out later it was for one dollar. It’s basically just one team giving a guy a chance, but MLB requires some form of compensation.
TroyVan
Consideration is something of value given to another party to execute a contract. Consideration must be exchanged in order for the contract to be executed. Consideration isn’t plural, even if it is more than a dollar, or if it involves money plus something else of value.

Happy times Tiger fans, the Calvory is on its way!

BLAIR CALVO, come on down ! Cue price is right show song. The good part is the bats are starting to come alive. The Tigers are really playing some good baseball this year. Much better than I ever thought they’d be. Great job Harris, his moves have been working out well so far. This Tiger team is fun to watch.
stymeedone
Still waiting for Harris to show he is better than Avila. As long as Maton is still in the Majors, I’m not impressed. Its Avila’s guys keeping things fun to watch. McKinstry is starting to revert back to what the Cubs saw in him.

Vierling, Holton, Lorenzen? He added complimentary players to the holdovers who could play and is seeing what the incumbents have to offer. Was he supposed to just start from scratch? No player bats a thousand and no GM does either. As far as I can see he is following the template they used in San Fran to win 107 games a couple years ago and to creep back into the playoff picture this year. Focus on the positives because things are looking up and there are reinforcements on the farm.

The players are getting a pretty good look that’s for sure. Who will make the cut into next year, who knows ? The roster will expand a hitter and a pitcher on Sep 1, so I don’t think healthy guys will get cut before then. Maton, and Hasse are difficult to watch right now. Still there is a lot to like right now. Next year will be fun, but this year is fun. The D.D, A.A sr jr, Cabrera era is ending soon.
I;m ready for this new era, this has been a very long wind down of those first place Tiger teams. Things in and out of the game have changed so much, it’s not funny. The Tigers are competitive right now, and I don’t know how, even while watching the games. The team is playing up despite the numbers. It’s fun. They can only get better going forward I believe. This draft will be huge, it took a few years for D.D to get Verlander in the draft. I like it, I hope they can stay in it this year.

I feel the same way! The Tigers are WAY better than I thought they’d be. I think Greene going down really was a guy punch, but the guys are still playing hard against top competition (Braves, D-Backs, etc…). Hinch is doing a nice job pulling strings, and Harris knows we’re going to go through a ton of arms this year with the injuries sustained by our starters. The team is fun to watch! Those who are slinging arrows right now had to know with the roster we started with, we wouldn’t be in contention this year, but, there are definitely some guys who are developing in front of our eyes! It’s also been nice seeing Miggy contribute lately too—I have a TON of respect for that guy.

I agree, I’d like to see Miggy play more as well. The sound of the bat in his hands is way above anyone else’s on the team. I’m glad Tork is really improved this year, it’s above what I was expecting.
