Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts made an appearance at a fan event in London yesterday, ahead of the club’s matchup against the Cardinals as part of the London Series, and was asked whether the club would be buyers or sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. “Obviously we’re buyers right now,” Ricketts said, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. “Things can come off the rails, but I don’t think they will. I think what we have is a core that can compete for the division and compete for the playoffs and now it’s finding the missing parts to add to it.”
It’s been pointed out by many observers that this year’s trade deadline could potentially have a different alignment than many in years’ past. Due to the expanded postseason and weak Central divisions, very few clubs can be firmly categorized as true sellers and situations can change quickly. As of just two weeks ago, the Cubs were 26-36 and 7.5 games back of of the Brewers while the Reds were 29-34 and five games back. Both clubs have been on hot streaks since then and flipped the script. The Reds are now 40-35 and atop the division, putting them into the buyers camp. The Cubs are 36-38 and just 3.5 games behind and now seem to be thinking of buying as well.
As of just a few weeks ago, there was much speculation about the Cubs potentially trading away rental players like Cody Bellinger or Marcus Stroman, the latter of whom having one year remaining on his contract but the ability to opt out this fall. Putting those names on the market could have put the Cubs in position to reap huge prospect returns but their recent string of victories could now take those names off the table.
The situation is certainly fluid, something that Ricketts made clear in his comments. But it is still interesting to highlight the reality that this summer’s trades might end up being different than other years. The most common type of deal in years past would see a contending club give up prospects in order to acquire a win-now piece from a team buried in the standings. With so few clubs clearly out of contention this year, there may be more deals where contending clubs are on both ends, each trading from a surplus.
As a recent example of one such deal, the Yankees and Cardinals swapped Harrison Bader and Jordan Montgomery at last year’s deadline. The Yankees felt they had enough pitching that they could part with Montgomery in order to upgrade their outfield, while the Cardinals clearly felt the inverse.
All of that is to say that the Cubs could still look to trade pieces from their current roster even if they stay in the race, but it seems their overall approach will be one of gearing up for a postseason push, as opposed to making moves about future seasons. Which part of the roster they look to bolster will obviously depend upon health and performance in the weeks to come.
The bullpen would be an obvious target as the club’s relievers have a collective 4.29 ERA that places them 22nd out of the 30 clubs in the league. The rotation is in good shape right now with Stroman, Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks, Drew Smyly and Jameson Taillon lined up every five days, but an injury or two could always change the picture in a hurry.
The lineup has some strengths but the infield corners stand out as weak spots right now. The third base combo of Nick Madrigal and Miles Mastrobuoni hasn’t hit much while first basemen Eric Hosmer and Matt Mervis were disappointing enough that each is now off the active roster. Center fielder Cody Bellinger was hurried back from his rehab in order to take over at first but has hit just .105/.182/.158 since being activated.
All told, it will be a fascinating few weeks for the Cubs and for the baseball world as a whole. The club has already shown that a hot stretch can quickly flip the narrative upside-down, though the reverse is also true. Each game in June and July will take on magnified importance as each team tries to calculate their best path forward. For now, it seems the Cubs have put themselves in a position to get back into contention and they hope to keep it that way.

What…Swanson, Mancini & Hosmer didn’t cost enough? Stop trying to be the Mets and grow from within.
miltpappas
I love Mancini as a person, but I can’t believe the GMs who never took Camden Yards and its previously little league-sized dimensions into consideration when signing a player. Same with Jonathan Schoop. Both players had ridiculous stats while with the Orioles.
Pads Fans
Hosmer cost the major league minimum. Mancini cost $7 million AAV on two year deal. Those are minimal investments.
Swanson cost more and has already surpassed his annual salary cost in the value of his performance to date. That was a great investment on the Cubs part.
drasco036
The Cubs need to can Ross at the end of the year. Right now, as the division has stacked up, the Cubs should be in first. If it wasn’t for an epically bad month and a half, where Ross over saw five losing streaks in five weeks, the Cubs would be right there at the top of the division. Baring also in mind we lost to some truly awful teams (like the Nats) and we’re swept by the Reds.
I know a lot of people will argue that Ross was just figuring out the bullpen and line up but how many people were already jumping up and down about Alzolay needing to be the closer? Or how many people has freaking Patrick Wisdom bunt with Nicky two strikes on the bench? How many people throw 4 “hitters” in the line up that cannot hit when your staff Ace is on the mound? Ross routinely shows ineptitude and yet somehow remains.
avenger65
The cubs are still in a rebuilding stage. So are the Reds and Pirates. All three teams are going to have their ups and downs. You can’t say the Reds are in first place and they’re going to stay there. Rebuilding teams can be streaky. The Reds in first today, the more established Brewers the next. cub fans have to be patient. At least in Ricketts you have an owner who is interested (unlike the Southside) in building a winner. He sees how his team is playing, that in the division they’re in it’s possible to make the PO and he’s apparently going to be a buyer in August. As for Ross, I don’t know much about him, but he did somehow find the patience to manage a team that had to start over from scratch. He might not be the right guy to take them further. Whether Hoyer makes a change, time will tell.
drasco036
Ross took a solid team in 2020 and 2021 and managed them both to the ground. Let’s not pretend those two teams were “rebuilds”.
Last year was clearly a rebuild situation
NicoHoerndawg
Lol that was not a solid team by 2020. Super flawed and not capable of being a real competitor with everyone going up there swinging at every pitch trying to hit grand slams with the bases empty. Absolutely no team concept amongst their at bats. They shoulda gone full rebuild by the trade deadline of 2019. That’s when I was ready for it. Just think what they woulda gotten for Javy and Bryant back then.
Spotswood
Agreed… The 2019 team was already showing cracks. 14 games up with 12 to play and they go 2-10 and missed the playoffs.
’20 was a mess.
If you really want to see troubling, go back and look at the offensive playoff numbers for Bryant, Rizzo, Baez and Schwarber after 2016. That alone was reason to break up that core.
Fred K. Burke
Just my thoughts from a simple but longtime baseball fan. I agree that Ross has made some mistakes. What would concern me is who the front office would hire as a replacement. I doubt the replacement is currently in the organization. Sometimes change is not good unless there is some type of gross errors in judgement. Besides Ross and Hoyer are close friends from what I hear. Can you go from bad to worse? It’s possible I guess.Just look at the Cardinals and White Sox current situation with there new manager Oliver Marmol. No offense Cardinal fans but Marmol has not worked out to this point. Things are not so good on the south side as well with Pedro Griffols.
drasco036
That is by definition the “sunk loss fallacy”.
Unclemike1525
Like I’ve said before, Leave it to the Cubs to do the wrong thing. They should be promoting from within, Maybe trading some pieces they think don’t fit for something else and in general evaluating their own talent. Not buying more pieces to launch. I can only think of the kid from The Little Rascals who said ” They’ll never learn”.
avenger65
As a first time manager, Grifol has definitely made mistakes due to his inexperience. Things like not getting a reliever warming up when his starter was in trouble two innings earlier. I did like the way he mixed up his lineup, but now I think he should know where Vaughn, Robert and Benintendi should be batting.
CubsWS2016
Whom do you suggest they “promote” from “within” that hasnt already been promoted, or promoted, and sent down already?
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Mike, they don’t have a credible 3B prospect to promote from within. Devers and Machado got extended off the FA market, so they are going to have to buy one.
I’d like to see them go after Kim of the Padres. He’s hitting as well as Machado and Boegarts. Wisdom could essentially platoon with Tauchman (with Bellinger going back and forth between CF/1B), and they could send Mastrobuoni back to Iowa.
Unclemike1525
I would disagree and say Slaughter, is their best short term help with maybe BJ Murray a long shot and Triantos finally got himself fixed up and is looking like the Top Prospect he was supposed to be after battling injuries. I know he’s playing 2B right now but he has played 3B before. Not to mention that college 3B Brayden Taylor is mocked to be the Cubs 13th pick in this years draft. He could be ready fairly soon, If the Cubs don’t go pitching this year. It’s not as bleak as you think. Plus there are always Deals that could be made.No reason to go off half cocked and toss away money.
Spotswood
Slaughter is sporting a 30% K rate in Iowa. Slashing 245/.325/.486… As much as I like Slaughter, he hasn’t taken the next step, and that is not an upgrade from Wisdom.
Unclemike1525
It is if you like RBI’s. And I do. And it’s what they need. Murray is a SH and is above average defensively. Both would be an improvement over Wisdom and Madrigal IMO.
Spotswood
Yeah, but you thought Rios should start out of spring… So not on board of just bringing various minor league guys up and throwing them out there when they haven’t been capable of dominating in the minors. A guy with a 30% K rate in Iowa is Wisdom. If RBIs is what you want, that’s Wisdom
cubfan16
I don’t think they have anyone to promote. This is a big market club and they should fill the holes with decent players until the kids are ready to come up.
drasco036
I’m not following the minors all the much to be honest. I think we are fine at third with Madrigal for the time being. Let him play everyday, he’s hitting well now.
First base may be a thing if/when Bellinger moves back to center Morel can man. Not sure if he’s played first but I would imagine he wouldn’t be worse than Mancini with the glove.
As for minor players, the only move I can think of is bring in possibly PCA down the stretch and promoting some arms to pitch out of the pen.
BrianStrowman9
@mike
Slaughter’s slash line doesn’t look terribly different from Wisdom’s versus AAA arms. Think it’d be very wishful thinking to say he’d do any better than him. I seriously doubt it.
Spotswood
Agree with this and you’ve said in the past on the 3rd situation. If Madrigal continues to hit. Then he’s fine for the rest of the year. Slaughter was hot for 2months, but has really hit a cold stretch. And his Ks have always been there.
Personally, I wouldn’t put Morel at 1st. He’s never played there. He fine fielding ground balls, but foot work around the bag to take a throw. Picking a ball in the dirt, throwing to 2nd and leading a pitcher with a toss are things that would concern me. Completely different position than he’s ever played. I’d trust Mancini or Wisdom more playing there.
I’d consider Jared Young at 1st. He started and played well for Canada in the WBC. Had some HRs. At Iowa, he’s slashing .327/.432/.605/1.037. 12 HRs , 41 RBIs. A lefty that plays 1st and OF corners.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Morel started taking occasional reps at 1B earlier this month, but has never played there in a game.
drasco036
After watching todays game, do you think Morel could be ANY worse than Mancini at first? The loss today rest solely on his shoulders.
Spotswood
Yep, loss was all on Mancini. So you’ve seen Morel play 1st?
My recommendation, if you read, is to bring up Young, someone that has played 1st. My comment wasn’t going all in support for Mancini.
I’ve seen Morel play all over the field and he doesn’t strike me as a quality defender. You obvious see Morel quite different.
drasco036
Someone has their panties in a twist
Spotswood
Not really, I just wouldn’t experiment with putting a guy that clearly struggles defensively at a position he has never played in the middle of the season. And a position that handles the ball 12-15 times a game.
DonOsbourne

I’ll get excited when the Cubs are above .500 again. That said, the NL Central is so bad that a team with a losing record could still win the division.

Have you seen the ALC? I don’t think there’s one team with a .500 record. Yet one of them will be going to the PO.

Aces5
Candelerio and edwards jr from Washington.
3b and bullpen most needed help
drasco036
I’ll take “former Cubs for $200”
I don’t really want either of those guys, one, I don’t think Calendario can maintain his hitting and isn’t a difference marker regardless and the string bean slinger doesn’t help us in high leverage situations.
Aces5
Probably the best 3b that would be available. He is a real 3b, something cubs don’t currently have on the roster. He hit just as well in 20 and 21 so not sure why he can’t maintain it this year
Candelerio over Mastrobuoni is a huge roster upgrade. Edwards over somebody like Assad right now is an upgrade
drasco036
I’d rather have Brown and/or Wicks than trading anyone for Edwards. Edwards is Rowan Wick, great in medium leverage situations, awful in high. We don’t need medium leverage arms.
Madrigal has hit since getting called up and playing everyday. He doesn’t have the “power” Calendario has but I’d roll with him unless he regrets back to early season stats.
“Best available” isn’t an answer when the best available isn’t much. The move I would strongly consider is a Mancini for Bell swap right now to see if a change of scenery helps Bell out.
drasco036
Mastrobuoni needs to be regulated to pinch hitting/running. He makes enough contact and runs well enough he can be used to remove runners over and he actually is a really good base stealer, he has value on the roster but never as a starter.
Cmurphy
Mastrobuoni has a 30% SO rate in MLB this year. His contact rate isn’t great.
Doug Dascenzo's Mob Boss Dad
Don’t let nostalgia get in the way of making good decisions.
Aces5
It’s not nostalgia. Candelerio was a tiny blip in cubs history. The guy has more WAR than we have gotten from both corner infield spots combined. He is an extra base hit machine. And a real 3b with a real arm.
Nick madrigal is Darwin Barney without the defense and Mastrobuoni does not belong in a major league uniform at all. Seems like a pretty major upgrade to me and shouldn’t cost a ton
Doug Dascenzo's Mob Boss Dad
The fact that Candelario would be an improvement over Madrigal, Master B0ner, et al. says more about how bad the Cubs’ current third basemen are versus how “good” Candelario is. He’s literally an average hitter (100 OPS+) and defender (0.0 dWAR) over the course of his career. As for Edwards, we’ve already seen him wilt in high-leverage situations and go through periods where he completely loses command of his pitches during his previous tour of duty with the Cubs. I don’t want to go through that again.
If that’s the best “upgrade” the Cubs can do, why bother?
LouWhitakerHOF
Candeleria couldn’t hit or field last year. Ground balls that most 3B would have made plays on get by the Candy man. I wouldn’t trade for him you might end up the 2022 version.
mrripley_says
Lmao about those two guys. If that’s what you’d consider “buying” then I’ve got a load of cassette tapes to sell you! You can’t upgrade by bringing in previously failed pieces from the last regime. They need to get done real talent to plug those holes and they have tons of prospects to get it.
Spotswood
I’m not going to ridicule the suggestion, but I don’t think Candelario really changes the Cubs in terms of where their sit in the heiarchy of contending teams. He probably makes them a little better, but not sure enough to move the needle.
I loved Edward when he was here…. Right now he’s on the 15-day. Healthy he’d probably be the 4th or 5th best arm in our bullpen. But again, I’m not sure that moves the needle. And for a rental, I’d rather mover up and test other guys in our system like Brown, Clark and whoever.
Spotswood
You got half of it right. Well done. Some people need to recognize that you had this one. I do like him at 1st if they’re going to move Tauchman to RF and decrease Suzuki’s playing time. Just getting Suzuki out of the damn #4-#5 spot improves the lineup.
acoss13
I hope they stay hot but things can change very quickly as we have seen already.
solaris602
If they get a 3B I definitely hope that Madrigal is in the package going the other way. A 1B would be nice, but they’ve had like 4 guys cycle through that position, and none of them have even come close to working out. Who will be available that is for sure better than their current options? The bullpen is a huge need. Wouldn’t be as bad as it is if they’d signed Chafin over the winter.
drasco036
Since getting called back up and playing nearly everyday, Madrigal has been the Nicky two strikes everyone expected him to be. Hitting .300, taking. Walks, stealing bases and he plays a solid defense at third.
avenger65
The Sox haven’t had a pure 2b man since Madrigal left. In a way I’d like to have him back. I know cub fans aren’t enamored with him but, with what we’ve had at 2b since he left three seasons ago, I would hope the Sox would at least take another look at him. But that’s not gonna happen.
drasco036
That’s because baseball fans are too fickle. Madrigal struggled last season badly but was also coming off a serious injury. This season he hasn’t been given the time until now.
His over stat line is pretty bad but he’s been pretty well lately and robbing the bases blind. I’d seriously hold what I have at third for the near future to see if he sticks. He covers third well and has surprising arm strength. I thought he would be two hoping everything for third.
acoss13
I’m not sure who is available for 1B in a trade, but I like Patrick Wisdom just wish he wouldn’t whiff so much. Like I get it he’s going to strikeout, but 40% or however high it is, that’s unbearable to watch.
ray1
Would like to see them extend Stroman.
Big whiffa
His trade value is too high to resign. Literally the only dude out there
Quentin
Starter at 3B, LH bench bat, and maybe closer are the needs.
drasco036
I think first base/dh are a bigger need. I have to assume Tauchman regresses and Bellinger gets moved back to center sooner or later.
This season, I’m not paying a premium on a closer. I’d go with Alzolay but still look for a high leverage arm.
NicoHoerndawg
Honestly, I think the Cubs ride out Tauchman until he falters, which at that point, if PCA is still playing well, I think he skips Iowa all together and plays CF for the Cubs. This keeps Bellinger at 1st and now we’d have another good LHB in the lineup. Gives more time for Mervis to make his adjustments; and hopefully he’s okay after getting pulled from yesterday’s game. I think Mervis will be back on the big league roster just before the cutoff to be eligible for post season play, as long as the Cubs are in contention. And Morel should be the DH. His glove isn’t great, and his outfield routes are even worse. Keep him contained minimally filling in in the IF (preferably 2nd or 1st), but hopefully it won’t have to come to that.
Unclemike1525
Arbitration Jed will not bring up PCA until after his clock runs out next year, Like Mervis this year. It’s one prediction I have no qualms about making. And he won’ skip AAA unless like 4 guys get hurt anyway. Bellinger, Tauchman, Velasquez, and Morel
NicoHoerndawg
You just wait…. Why was Morel’s path to MLB?
Robertn623
Mervis will be traded last year drafted a kid named hayden mcgeary he hit in low a high a and double a next stop chicago
Robertn623
Arbitration jed kris bryant was theos descison not jed and who else have they held down
Unclemike1525
Morel skipped AAA because of COVID, And the fact that he was basically 2 years older because of it so his promotions never happened and 2 years of not playing. And you saw the holes in his swing when he did come up right? He’s doing a good job of fixing them so far this year. And McGeary is basically a man without a position. He’s listed as a C even though they have no intention of ever playing him there. And Slaughter and Stevens are much better prospects than him. He’s basically Schwarber, Only not as good.
Robertn623
They are moving him to first
Spotswood
Not sure McGeary skips Iowa, or that Mervis will be traded. I do expect McGeary will hit the Cubs top-20 prospect lists when they’re updated. Like Mervis, his rank will not be as high because he’s a 1st baseman. I could care less if he’s listed as a C or CF, no clue why others get twisted about such insignificant things.
I expect McGeary to be in Iowa fairly soon. Hopefully Mike will get to a game and get us an autograph. But this is an example of a healthy farm system. Redundancy… Maybe Mervis establishes himself when he’s recalled and McGeary fades. Maybe both establish themselves. That’s a win/win
I saw McGeary twice live in South Bend and watched a ton of his ABs at Tennessee. His hit tool is legit. He’s “serviceable” at 1wt now, but to be expected if a guy learning the position.
Spotswood
Morel did not skip AAA because of Covid. If that were the case every minor league players destined for MLB would have skipped AAA. That did not happen. Morel was pulled up because the Cubs were tired of seeing Ortega and Heyward run around CF. Morel had the athleticism to be a CF/utility. Morel would probably have been better served to have spent an extended period in Iowa. Kinda why he went there out of spring camp.
I’m hopeful on Stevens, but he is not smooth in the field and his hit tool is well behind McGeary.
I am a Slaughter fan. A little disheartened about his recent struggles and high K rate. I was hoping for a strong season to push Wisdom off 3rd…. Hopefully he gets things figured out.
northsidecrossrifles
“And McGeary is basically a man without a position. He’s listed as a C even though they have no intention of ever playing him there. And Slaughter and Stevens are much better prospects than him”
UncleMike, are you high right now? In what universe are Jake Slaughter and Felix Stevens better prospects than Hayden McGreary?
-Both of them aren’t anything to write home about defensively. I guess Slaughter has positional versatiltiy, which is something. But Stevens is an all bat prospect like McGreary.
-Slaughter is already 26, and running an alright slash line at AAA. He has a 30% k rate. I like his speed, and he does have above average power. However, he’s essentially Patrick Wisdom with less power and more speed. Though I think thats AAA depth you’d be fine with, its nothing to currently bank your hopes on.
-Felix Stevens is the same age as McGreary, is a level behind him, and is currently struggling at that level.
-At the same level, McGreary ran an OPS over 100 points higher, with a much lower strikeout rate, and a much higher walk rate.
-McGreary has the 6th best wRC+ for all players 23 and under who are currently in AA. Its a better wRC+ than Slaughter has had in his 400 plus career AA atbats, while being significantly younger.
McGreary is at minimum as good of a prospect as your two choices, and its likely he will be rated above both when the midseason updates are released.
Unclemike1525
Well I’ve watched a ton of the games and I can say I disagree. First you say Stevens has struggled since his promotion. For a week? Plus I haven’t seen that. Not to mention that he’s played other positions besides 1B having played in the OF. I never said McGeary isn’t a good hitter. He is, But the only position he can really play is 1B and from what I’ve seen he’s not great at it making him primarily a DH. So is he good enough hitter to be a man who just hits? Can he sit on the bench and just hit? A lot of guys can’t. Slaughter gets runners in and gets the job done plus plays multiple positions well. Contrary to Spotwoods assessment that Wisdom is an RBI guy. Now who’s high? The guy has like 28 RBI’s. You can live with his pitiful average if he had like 55 RBI’s. I’ve seen him whiff too many times with runners in scoring position and the game on the line, It’s pitiful. As for Rios he was hot coming out of Spring Training and Ross let him rot on the bench so I’m not going to apologize for that. He deserved a shot and didn’t get one. We’ll never know but it looks like he was a long shot anyway. Dodgers don’t usually get rid of pieces they like. Besides a lot of guys struggle right after a promotion. Velasquez has struggled at every stop he’s made before settling in. I do agree Jared Young could get a shot at 3B. I’ve always liked his bat but he’s struggled when they’ve brought him up before but I’ve seen enough of Wisdom to know they’ve got better options. 3B is probably the weakest position in the system at this moment but it’s not totally bereft of talent. To say that would be wrong.
Spotswood
You were Rios’ cheerleader in spring his 14 Ks in 36 PAs is why he didn’t get more chances. And he’s horrible in the field. The mistake Ross made was hitting Wisdom hit 7th & 8th.
Don’t come at me like you’re riding a high on quality observations. You wanted to release Hendricks. Then you said he wouldn’t make 5 starts. He threw a 1 hitter. Then you said he’d wash out of his next start. Which, of course he went out a threw a gem, then gollow d that up with a 2-hitter. Because you’re some bum, that had a similar injury, you think you know more about that situation than the Cubs
You were whining like a 13-year ild girl about a boy, because Mervis Mervis didn’t make to Chicago out of spring.
You babbled on about Madrigal not playing 3rd and everyone had to listen to you whine.
You think you know how to run an MLB better than Hoyer. Yet until a month ago, you had no idea how minor league options work…
It’s endless with you. You’ve proven over and over and over, that you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Unclemike1525
Talk about whining. Wow. Feel better? Save some shrink money? The season isn’t half over. There’s a long way to go. We’ll see. Chicks dig the long ball. Must be why you love Wisdom and HR’s. Most of them are in garbage time in blowouts.
northsidecrossrifles
RBI’s? Really Uncle Mike? Are we in 1998?
But I’ll atleast steelman the weak point you’re hanging your hat on.
McGreary has 42 RBIs to Slaughter’s 53 on the season, not the 29 you conveniently cherry picked. Slaughter has played in the most offense heavy league in the minors in the PCL. RBI’s are largely a product of what your teammates do ahead of you, and Slaughter has been playing with a lot of major leaguers who’ve obliterated AAA. Its much more useful, as well as predicative of future performance when you measure slash lines, walk and strikeout rates, hard hit %, etc.
Unclemike1525
I was talking about Wisdoms 29 RBI’s but facts don’t matter. Reading is a skill after all. Another child left behind I guess if we’re getting personal now.

Another quality start by Hendricks… Could you tell us more about how Hendricks is blocking prospects at the MLB level. Is it Brown’s 4.95 ERA at Iowa and 14.3 BB rate. Or is it because Smyly and Taillon’s 6.90 ERA that you like instead of what Hendricks is doing? Is he blocking Wesneski or Adrian Sampson? Maybe you’re thinking about Porter Hodge or Arias? Is Stroman also in the way…? I think everyone is really interested in your solutions. What would your starting rotation be tomorrow?
Spotswood
“And basically yeah he’s in the way. It’s obvious this team and it’s one step forward , Three steps back is a loser scenario.”
I’ve bookmarked this thread for future reference. Your belief is that Hendricks with a 2.81 ERA is blocking which prospects? While James Taillon has a 6.90 ERA and Drew Smyly has a 3.96 ERA…And you say Hendricks is blocking which minor league prospects? Pretend you’re Hoyer for a second and list your rotation. Is Niedert on your list?
Spotswood
Taillon has 1 quality start in 13 starts. Smyly has 5 quality starts in 15 starts. Wesneski has 3 quality starts in 10 starts. Hendricks has 4 quality starts in 7 starts…. Could you explain further who Hendricks is blocking? Give some insight on how and who Hendricks is blocking… Just share your brilliance…. That’s all we need.

Well, it isn’t “I think it’s pretty self-explanatory with where we’re at.”.
acoss13
Perry sounded super condescending with that statement. So smug.

Nothing about the makeup of this team says “buyers” unless Ricketts is using the term to describe buying players for the future
Spotswood
Thank you… I still see this team

There was more to that thought, but I’ll leave it at that

Breaking: Ricketts Announces Cubs to Remain Visible
Spotswood
Ricketts has been willing to spend, from ’16-’20 they were at or near top of payroll, going over the tax threshold 3 times.
Spotswood
This narrative is a non-starter. Ricketts could have kept the payroll at $150M this year and gotten the same mouth-breather reaction. They could have brought back Ortega at $750M and Heyward, instead of signing Bellinger. Didn’t need to sign Swanson. Didn’t need to sign Mancini. Just could have played their payroll obligations out. Instead they spent right up to the threshold this year. Rabble, rabble, rabble… They took my job!

Non – NL Central fans are rooting for the Reds or Pirates to win the NL Central. It’s always fun when a team that wasn’t expected to win a division, let along play .500 ball comes out of nowhere and wins.
The Reds seem to have the best collection of young talent in the NL Central by far. It’s pretty amazing that they are all contributing and I’m sure some of them will regress, but the Reds seem to be on the right path of becoming the Rays of the NL.
Aces5
Except the rays develop pitching. Almost all of the Reds top rookies and prospects are position players.
Not a casual MLB fan
This is very true. The Reds are not the Rays of the National League, and they probably aren’t even the Diamondbacks within the NL. (That upcoming series will be quite revealing.)

I thought the Cubs could win the NL Central going into the season. Now I think any NL Central team can win it because the division is
so awful.
As with the AL Central, when the playoffs start there will be 3-4 teams in each league that didn’t get into the playoffs but were better and more deserving then the 2 that got in from the NLC and ALC.
Anyone that thinks that the division winners from the NLC and
ALC are going to go far in the playoffs needs a Breathalyzer test.
The reason that only 2 teams from the 10 Central division teams
are over .500 as of today is because they have more games out of their division in 2023 and can’t play with the teams from the East and West.

There is a good amount of comparisons happening between Swanson and Arcia and I get how natural that is. However, I think some of it is unrealistic.
Do I think the Braves made the right decision for themselves by letting Swanson walk? Yes I do. Anthopoulos simply won’t budge when he has committed to a number he won’t go past. Freddie Freeman is the ultimate example. The Braves have demonstrated willingness to spend but it won’t ever be the “stupid money” the Phillies talked about and certainly not with the insanity of Cohen. So in this since the Braves were priced out of Swanson.
Do I think the Braves are getting greater value with Arcia? Yes, of course. Right now, AA looks like a genius but it isn’t always going to look so obvious. If Arcia was hitting with a league average bat and a plus glove, Arcia would still be giving the Braves greater value than Swanson does the Braves.
Do I think Arcia is the better player. No, absolutely not. It’s easy to pick on Swanson right now. He kind of recently broke out of a slump so his numbers look a bit low at the moment. They looked pretty damn good two or three weeks ago and they probably will again two weeks from now. If you have followed the Braves for the last 5 or 6 years you know how bad a Swanson slump can be. You also understand there are times he carries his team.
I don’t know that the Cubs made a good decision with Swanson or not but there is no denying that they have the better shortstop.
Pads Fans
My question is who are they willing to trade? Crow-Armstrong? Horton? Alcantara? Brown? Mervis? Who are they going to give up to get one quality player in return at the trade deadline?
Spotswood
Yeah… IMO they have too many needs to make them legit contenders. One guy won’t change this team.
chrismilwaukee
Ohtani might. He’s an ace and a big bat. Doubtful he gets traded, but unlike you, I think they could land a couple or a few players (bullpen arm, 1B, 3B) and contend.
minor league guy
also Ricketts…
“extended warranty? how could i lose!”

Announce Eduardo Escobar to the Angels

I think the cubs should sell this year they can get some good young talent for guys that probably won’t be with the cubs next year , Can the cubs make the playoffs? Probably will they go far into the playoffs? Probably not . So depending on what they can get for who they have I hope that they stay open to being sellers
rmullig2
I wonder if the Cubs would take DJ’s contract from the Yankees if they threw in Holmes.

I like mlbs approach on this London series to have it mid season or in season, than an exhibition game with bench players. Highest attendance by an mlb game so far this season.
