The Red Sox announced that they have acquired right-hander Tayler Scott from the Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations. Scott had been designated for assignment by the Dodgers on the weekend. To make room on the 40-man roster for Scott, the Red Sox transferred righty John Schreiber to the 60-day injured list.
Scott, 31, was signed by the Dodgers to a minor league deal in the offseason. He’s posted strong results in Triple-A this year, with a 1.37 ERA in 19 2/3 frames. His 12.5% walk rate is definitely on the high side but he’s paired that with a 31.3% strikeout rate. He was able to get added to the club’s 40-man roster but struggled in six big league innings, allowing six earned runs in that time. He was designated for assignment when the club added Bryan Hudson to the roster.
Prior to this year, Scott had seen some big league time with the Mariners, Orioles and Padres. He now has 34 1/3 innings of major league experience but with a 10.75 ERA in that small sample. That’s obviously less than ideal, but he’s generally fared much better in the minors. In 188 Triple-A innings over five separate seasons, he has a 4.02 ERA. He’s punched out 26.7% of batters faced at that level while walking 9.6%.
Scott has one option year remaining, which will likely be used here in 2023. A player has to spend 20 days on optional assignment before they burn one of their options and Scott is at 11 for the year so far. The Sox can move him from the majors to the minors fairly freely for the rest of the season, but he will likely be out of options for 2024. Though he hasn’t had much major league success yet, he’s shown flashes of promise in the minors and they will see if he can unlock that in the big leagues for them.
As for Schreiber, he’s been on the injured list since May 16 due to a right teres major strain. He’ll now be ineligible to return until 60 days from that initial IL placement, which would be mid-July. A recent report from MLB.com indicated that he had yet to advance to mound work. Since he still needs to ramp up and go on a rehab assignment, he may not have been in line to return before the middle of July anyway.

Ok

I’d rather they made room for him by DFA’ing the Ort.

Both suck
JoeBrady
You’d rather DFA Ort than put Schreiber on the 60-day IL?

Anything to get rid of Ort

Joe – Yes, addition by subtraction.
WTH was the point of bringing in your two best relievers tied in the bottom of the 8th and 9th when obviously somebody would have had to pitch the 10th. Bringing in the guy with the 6 ERA to pitch the 10th was unfathomable, especially after Jansen threw only 9 pitches!! He hadn’t pitched the prior two days, and he didn’t pitch June 13-17.
If ever there was a situation where Jansen should have pitched a second inning, THAT was the situation!!!
Talk about Cora having a robotic tunnel-vision “9th inning only” mentality ….
JoeBrady

===============================
Martin was automatic. There is a 0% chance you don’t bring him in.
IRT bringing in your closer, without the lead, I tend to agree, but I am in the minority. It seems like most managers bring in their closers in earlier, just to survive one more inning. And there is some logic in that as well.
But more importantly, some people would complain had Ort been brought in in the 9th and left Jansen on the bench. That’s another 100% guarantee.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe- Bringing in Winck for the 8th and Martin for the 9th or 10th would have been the correct move. Heck even Bernardino would have been a better option for the 8th.
You don’t burn your two best relievers on the road in a tie game.
JoeBrady
Of course you do. You use your best guys first. You don’t hold beck and save guys just in case the game goes to the 10th, 11th, etc. I’d make an exception for the closer, but even with that. most managers will bring in their closer earlier.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – Sorry, not true. You don’t save your worst guy for the 10th..
Pitching the bottom of the 10th in a tie game is as high leverage a situation as you can have, especially now with the Ghost Runner rule.
JoeBrady
From a BB, I would much rather s good pitcher throwing the 8th, then hoping the game is still tied in the 10th, which you are 50/50 to get to. And two other considerations.
1-If you get to the 9th tied, you’d have effectively taken their closer out of the game, since MN couldn’t get a save.
2-In the 8th, you are looking for a scoreless inning. In the 10, you are looking for a strikeout. It is your best chance of keeping them off the scoreboard.
It’s also worth noting that MN didn’t wait to the 10th to bring in their best RP.

Red Sox been taking our sloppy seconds these last few years. Verdugo, kike, rich hill, now this guy
Ham Fighter
Verdugo doing great this year you turd
Fever Pitch Guy
Ham – He didn’t mention Turner, Martin or Jansen either.
BlueSkies_LA
Yeah. The Dodgers could use any or all of those sloppy seconds this year.
Mr big dig
^_^ I completely forgot about Jansen and Turner

Yeah let’s just pretend your team didn’t sign Brasier after we cut him loose.

I just want Ort gone. That’s it. I would rather have carried a rule 5 all year and never pitched them once going shorthanded instead of going into the season with Brasier and Ort. Way too many people commented on it during the off season and spring and watched the terrible results as the front office carried them into the season against professional hitters. How many games slipped away?
I think this is just a fluff depth move so who cares, but there have been so many of them that I am starting to think that “is” the Chaim plan.
HBan22
It’s absolutely hilarious to me at this point that Ort is still on the team. Bloom has to have a legitimate crush on him or something.
runningred
Well he certainly Ort too!
Fever Pitch Guy
William – That’s what I’ve been saying for a long time. All teams make these sort of moves occasionally, but Bloom makes a whole lot more of them than other teams.
Randy Red Sox
Bloom’s plan was to rid the farm of all the pitching prospects DD brought in.
Fever Pitch Guy
Randy – At least Bloom held onto Houck and Bello.
JoeBrady
Has Bloom actually traded anyone of substance?
AL34
Renfroe, Betts, Benintendi, Vazquez. I’d say those guys were of substance as you put it.
JoeBrady
Those are the guys you were referring to when you said “Bloom’s plan was to rid the farm of all the pitching prospects DD brought in.”?
@bogie2X
Randy Red Sox
T.Houck, B.Bello, K.Crawford, A.Politi, B.Mata (6), B.Walter (7), W.Gonzalez (11), L.Perales (12), C.Murphy (14), A.Bastardo (29).
6 pitchers drafted of Dombrowski are in Top-30 of prospects of Red Sox and 3 pitchers in an active list on 26 men of that Bloom saved and you talk that he is released from the potential clients of DD is funny.
If you talk about Groome, Ward, А.Ramirez, Song, of their number in 2023:
Groome – 2023 (AAA) ”San-Diego” – 15GS, 65.2 IP, 9.78 ERA
Ward – 2023 “Washington” – 21G, 29.2 IP, 6.07 ERA
Ramirez – 2022-2023 Did Not Play
Song – 2023 Did Not Play

BLOOM STRIKES AGAIN !!!!

This is Chaim Bloom’s problem. When you are counting on two pitchers Paxton and Sale who have not pitched in almost two years. Putting them back into the rotation and going through the wear and tear of pitching every 5th day is going to take its toll. God only knows when Sale is going to make it back. Paxton has had injuries his whole career. How did Bloom expect to compete with these two guys at the top of the rotation? He should have known better. He still perplexes me as a Baseball Operations guy / GM or whatever his title is.
