TODAY: The Pirates officially announced the move, with Canaan Smith-Njigba optioned to Triple-A as the corresponding move.
JUNE 13: The Pirates are calling up right-hander Osvaldo Bido to start tomorrow’s game against the Cubs, tweets Justice delos Santos of MLB.com. Pittsburgh will formally select his contract before the game. They have a trio of vacancies on the 40-man roster, so they’ll only need to make a corresponding active roster transaction.
Bido, 27, gets a big league call for the first time. The 6’3″ hurler entered the professional ranks in 2017, signing out of the Dominican Republic at age 21. That’s far older than the typical international amateur and has contributed to a lack of prospect attention, but Bido has pitched his way up over six-plus seasons.
He’s spent the past two years with Triple-A Indianapolis. Bido posted a 4.53 ERA over 111 1/3 innings last season. He carries a 4.55 mark across 55 1/3 frames this year, starting 10 of 12 outings. He has a solid 23.5% strikeout percentage but has walked a little under 11% of opponents. He had fairly similar strikeout and walk marks in 2022.
The Bucs kicked off a stretch of 13 consecutive game days with tonight’s loss to the Cubs. They’ll need a five-man rotation for the next couple weeks, which could give Bido a chance to make multiple appearances. General manager Ben Cherington said over the weekend that righty Roansy Contreras was moving to relief (relayed by Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Paired with season-ending surgery for Vince Velasquez, the Pirates are looking for some stability alongside Mitch Keller, Rich Hill, Luis Ortiz and Johan Oviedo.

They’ve got to call up priester next time he’s up to pitch. He’s their missing rotation piece right now
TheMan 3
Priester should have been promoted over this has been but instead of doing what is best for the team, they chose a pitcher who has an ERA over 4, and on a team that has problems scoring significant runs
Too bad they couldn’t send Shelton to Indy. It makes no sense to bat your leading run producer 2nd and your fastest player hitting 7-8.
drasco036
How many years did the Cardinals bat Pujols second?
TheMan 3
I didn’t know that Pujols played for the Pirates
pt57
All teams hit one of their best hitters 2d —
Yankees, Judge; Rays, Franco; Angels – Trout or Ohtani; Dodgers, Freeman (and they take it up a notch by leading off Betts); Braves, Olson (Acuna leads off); Cardinals, Goldschmidt
TheMan 3
I don’t care what other teams do . Like the old saying, if your friends jump off the bridge, should you?
pt57
Yes, emulating successful teams is something the Pirates should NOT do.
/s/ Cubs fan.
TheMan 3
my point is that each team has their own strengths and weaknesses and the player that best fits into the lineup in order to maximize the chances of offensive success
Or do I need to explain this like you’re a 4 year old, pt57?
pt57
A team’s best hitter should bat #2 because, over the course of the season, they’ll get 50 more PAs.
The faster players probably hit lower to try to set the table for the #2 hitter’s second time through the lineup.
And the #2 hitter has a better chance to see the SP a 3d time, which stats indicate is the sweet spot for a hitter.
bucsfan0004
Having said all that, Shelton has no idea what he’s doing with the lineup. Its different every single night.
pt57
It’s almost like he’s tailoring the best lineup based on a crap ton of data.
TheMan 3
Following up on what you’re saying, Connor Joe has no justification for batting third
TheMan 3
Shelton always places Marcano batting 1st against right handed pitchers, and Cutch leads off against lefties
Marcano’s OBP is .293
Cutch’s is .381
Marcano has drawn 6 walks
Cutch has drawn 39 walks
I rest my case

Priester needs to dominate more before getting the call. Been better over the last 10 starts but his ERA over that time is just south of 4. When he does get called up he should stay. Bido will probably make a start or 2 and get sent down or end up in the pen. He could partner with Contreras in a bullpen game and eat some innings.
Grumpofm
Priester has an era over 4 too.
njbirdsfan
Is Priester, or Davis or Endy ready yet? Doesn’t matter, because you know more than the GM and the manager combined.
And yeah Shelton is the worst. I mean, you’ve got a team in first everyone figured would be in the basement in April. What a bum.
Windowpane
Fans in every city are unhappy unless their team goes 162-0 and wins every game 15-0.
TheMan 3
It’s only June, more than half of the season remains and anything can happen including diving back into the basement
Now explain your professional opinion of why Shelton’s lineups are so effective?
louwhitakerisahofer
Nobody in their right mind can justify Shelton’s line up card 5x a week. Idiocy in the highest.
holecamels35
What constitutes as ready? And really, who cares? The team needs help. These guys are supposed to be difference makers, quit being so afraid. Not sure about Endy, but Davis is a college bat, should be ready, and Priester has been in AAA for a bit and I’m sure his arm will get injured within the next 2-3 years like every young pitcher so get something out of him now.
Nick Baratta
Priester is boring and has boring stuff and AAA numbers unless he makes some big improvements he’s nothing more than a 4/5 starter in the majors
Black_Pearl
Wow! All that insight from a few months in AAA? You must have long lines at the county fair for that fortune telling.
joew
@everyone saying they should have or should call up Priester now. Probably not a good idea. He has stunk up AAA really bad. Minors performance is not everything of course.. but it has been pretty bad.
He might be taking the Keller route. couple good games and then a complete bomb. Possibly getting him up to work with the MLB staff could make a difference. I would still wait to the deadline see what happens with the record and Hill..
There is not much else in the way of young prospects in AAA for the rotation though.
cornwhisperer
Then again, he may be emulating Oviedo or Contreras. One good start and then three where he has difficulty getting out of the first inning
I keep hearing Dream’s comment that the future Pirates ace pitchers are at AA and lower. Doesn’t bode well for a strong starting rotation for a couple years
Grumpofm
A recent article said “similar to Priester’s numbers in 3a.” Slightly lower whip, but worse overall from what I just looked at. With the amount of hype Priester is getting, and him being from Illinois, it should be a no brainer for him to skip last night’s start and get the call up for tonight.
Black_Pearl
If/When he is ready his 1st start should be a home game.
Skeptical
Does Sheldon hate pitchers? He sure misuses them.
TheMan 3
Contreras needs to be demoted to Indy. Bring back Bolton or Underwood Jr
Neither can be any worse
And I agree, Shelton misuses his bullpen but he also misuses his lineup which makes him a horrible manager
cornwhisperer
Shame what has happened to Contreras. Clearly his failures have gotten to his head and you wonder about his future. Surely, a trip to the minors and some modicum of success wouldn’t hurt
Bido was a surprise. Didn’t get much help from the plate ump and had nice breaking pitches
We talked earlier about the faltering starting rotation outside of Keller, but the pen is now getting hit, too. Whether it’s walks, continually falling behind in counts or again, throwing pitches dead red, it’s problematic and the question becomes, what are the options?
You’d think the Cubs are the ‘27 Yankees with the way hitters are teeing off
Bido was. Victimized in the 1st again by Castro at short on two plays ,one where he bobbled and slipped and another grounder in the hole that he never got to
As we said previously, they’re in a portion of the schedule that’s could shape things. Struggling to hit, can’t field and now, can’t pitch consistently. Isn’t this what we all kind of expected as the season began?
TheMan 3
According to DK Sports, the Bucs are planning on being buyers at the trade deadline and are looking for pitching
Bido was indeed a surprise but Castro’s fielding wasn’t. And you’re right, Cornwhisperer, the Umpire’s calls on pitches were horrible
But again the lineup didn’t make sense,
Your 2 best hitters against lefties are batting 6 and 7, while Joe, who’s average with runners in scoring position is nearly worse on the team bats 3rd
I also think Shelton is misusing the bullpen, there’s no reason why pitchers can’t throw more than 1 inning
cornwhisperer
Two thoughts
First, I never place any stock in what DK sports says
Two, given the fact is everything is falling apart, I believe the Pirates will be an afterthought by deadline time. Again, I’m ok with 73 or 75 wins. But trading prospects for arms for this particular team would be nonsense
cornwhisperer
I should add a third point. What would you expect the Pirates to say about their intentions at deadline, anyway? Calling themselves sellers or saying they’ll stand pat would indicate the idea that they expect to fade
Who knows?
Weak division and it could be anyone’s to win. Just seems like things are coming unraveled here with no cavalry on the horizon
TheMan 3
Outside of Keller and Hill, starting pitching has become erratic and when they can’t get beyond the 4-5 inning, the use of bullpen is beginning to show signs of weakness and wear.
But you can’t win on pitching alone
Castro has 9 recorded errors, those 2 he nearly bungled yesterday could have been errors. Santana is having a superb season at first but his own offense is also erratic
Finally, batting Suwinski 5th against a lefty, when he struggles offensively is yet another move I question on Shelton’s lineup
And Mathias needs either repeased or sent back Indy. His offense does not meet the expectations that others here bragged about when he was acquired
But I do give Hedges an attaboy for hitting his first homer of the year
Grumpofm
Bednar fading last season after that ridiculous outing against the dodgers can be one reason to not throw more than an inning. I don’t know the timing of your post, however Contreras second inning last night seems like a good reason to have pulled him after one.
