The Padres announced today that left-hander Adrian Morejon has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A El Paso. To open a spot on the 40-man roster, outfielder David Dahl was designate for assignment.
Dahl, 29, signed a minor league deal with the club and cracked the Opening Day roster. Unfortunately, he landed on the injured list just a week into the season with a quad strain, having made nine plate appearances in four games. He went on a rehab assignment and was optioned to El Paso once healthy. In 76 plate appearances for the Chihuahuas, he hit .265/.342/.382 for a wRC+ of 76, or 24% below league average.
It’s a continuation of a rough stretch for Dahl, who was once a fixture of the Rockies’ roster. He debuted in 2016 and hit .315/.359/.500 for a wRC+ of 113. He spent all of 2017 on the injured list but returned to post a combined .291/.342/.528 line for a 111 wRC+ in the two seasons after that. Unfortunately, he had a dismal 2020 when he hit just .183/.222/.247. He was non-tendered after that season and has bounced around since then, joining the Rangers, Brewers, Nationals and now the Padres in recent years, struggling to get on track for any extended period of time.
The Padres will now have a week to trade Dahl or pass him through waivers. If he were to clear waivers, he would be eligible to reject an outright assignment and return to free agency by virtue of having more than three years of major league service time.

Adrian…welcome back!
David…good luck!

Makes sense. He’s not a shortstop. The only way to become outfield depth on the Padres 26 man is through the infield.
no soup for you
Oh, you mean like Soto?
Gwynning
Trent Grisham rubs his mustache and farts in Scream’s general direction…
no soup for you
Or do you mean Grisham?
mrpadre19
Scream_name Or,his OPS is over 100 pts lower than Max Schrock in a league where everyone hits.

@mrpadre I’d prefer Azocar over anyone, but we’re running a 1B/infielder in RF tonight which isn’t ideal. If I’m not mistaken the Padres gave Odor his first work ever in OF earlier this year as well. Hence, the sarcasm in my original comment. And yeah, I’m scratching my head wondering why Dahl hasn’t been given a further look. How many games has he played in PCL since coming off the IL?
Gwynning
He’s played in 17 games, Scream. 18 for 76, 1HR, 10RBI, .724 OPS in a hitter friendly environment. His #s don’t jump off the page; he may just be a Quad-A player at his best at this point. Somebody had to go (off the 40.) An argument could be made that it should have been Nola, but the point remains, somebody had to get the boot.

A. I want to see Azocar get 15-20 games for a real look at what he has. No power but if he can get on base and steal a base with great D – he can supplant Grish.
B. I’m not down on Odor – right now – I was in April and I might be in July but, he has performed at 3b, 2b and rf – yes, think of that. Never played professionally yet, no bad plays? Come on. He isn’t Clemente but what the heck, don’t bash it while his bat is hot get him in the line up. Move Tatis to CF.
I’m good with Dixon getting 10-15 games even.

They didn’t feel Dahl was a better option than Azocar, Odor, or Dixon? Interesting.
llokokokok
Odor has been carrying our team. Azocar has options left they aren’t going to cut him. Dixon has been playing pretty well lately (also, he has more versatility he can play 1B/3B/OF). In the beginning of the season before Tatis came back we had more OF needs but now our depth needs seem to be infield because of injuries.
Little Stevie Janowsky
Yeah odor and his .290 on base really been carrying the team
JSC Cubbs
It’s been a timely .290
Simm
He has been much better the last couple of weeks

Actually the past 30 days.

They should’ve DFA’d Nola instead.
PadreB2011
Yes, Nola has absolutely sucked since coming to SD…Sanchez already has 1/2 the amount of hits (7) in 27 AB’s as Nola has (14) in 107 AB’s…and the same RBI total. Nola is pathetic!

Yeah, but you have to keep Austin in order to sign Aaron in a few months. 🙂

Wow

Honestly never seen a $275m roster where the shuffle between guys on the bench and AAA matters so much. They have 4 legit superstars in their lineup and can’t play .500 baseball because the other 5 are so totally awful. Totally grasping at straws to fill out the lineup each day. #rockstargm

99 – you may not agree but list of the Padre writers are all attributing the sub .500 record to those top 4 superstars poor performance as opposed to the bottom of the order. The theme being that those 4 are SUPPOSED to make the team so good that the other 5 don’t HAVE to be but average.
Kevin Acee wrote about that today in his daily email.
99socalfrc
4 good hitters and 5 AAA guys being a recipe for success?
Yeah that sounds exactly like something Acee would write…..

I note the Dodgers box score from last night had 5 “hitters” with averages at or under .236.
So, what is your point? The 4 that get paid the big money are expected to produce – and aren’t – at elite levels. The others are expected to be good / average or whatever – something that is “not bad”.
Teams can’t put 9 superstars out there at todays salaries.

This team is in the midst of dropping another game to a Seattle team who had been struggling coming into this series.
The Padres are nothing more than a freaking slump buster of a team this year. I’m tired of the, “well, let’s wait and see what happens after this series…” or “we’ll see at the end of June…”
You know what they say, those who brag about big expectations end up delivering little results!
Now, it’s figuring out what to really expect for the next 10yrs with this group.
SanDiegoSuperDissapointingPadres
Ok tonight was ridiculous! Not like any other loss hasn’t been, but this was beyond ridiculous!
Something urgent needs to happen! Like rip out all the TV’s in the clubhouse, take away all the fancy amenities and that baseball with the sombrero needs to go. Then somebody’s tails needs to be on the chopping block. Not Melvin as of yet. I don’t like him throwing out Honeywell all the time, Weathers should no way be a starter and why does Carpenter and Cruz still have spots on the roster? Hitting coaches are obviously not even close to doing anything beneficial. This team is horrible to watch at the plate. Not one Grand Slam for the once great Slam Diego this year…garbage!
Grish, Kim leading off? Tatis should be leading off! I am frustrated with the constant changing lineup every single night and I get for L/R handed pitching.
Hang a burned out hippie at the end of this one…this team is cooked!
thefaithfulfriar
It’s like putting lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig. Lifetime Friar. SD native. Big fan. The Padres are still the Padres… This thing has got to turn around
jimbobsjorts
How are they going to hit grand slams when they can’t even load the bases?
I agree, this year has been awful. Tired of the “it’s only April/May/June” crowd. Time to admit this is a .500 team or possibly worse. Heads need to roll, starting with Preller.
