Spot on answer regarding Sandy Alcantara.

Thanks for the intel on Bieber. Did not know about his drop in velo. Bummer news for any contender, including my Os, looking for high end SP help. Other than Cease, is there anyone else out there?
Longtimecoming
What about a package of Jack Flaherty and Goldie for some prospects?
I think the surprises are going to be fun to watch this year. With NL being what might be described as “parity” with so many teams all bunched up close, there will ultimately be some unexpected sellers
And unexpected buyers this year.

I’m not sure the Cards and O’s match up well in a trade. I can see why the O’s would have interest in Flaherty and Goldy, but the Cards will be looking for pitching. To my knowledge, the O’s don’t have a surplus of near ML ready arms to deal.

C Yards Jeff;
Shane Bieber is not pitching “like a fourth/fifth starter right now”.
On 5/31 he got blown out for 7 runs in 4 innings against the O’s – staying in because the bullpen was overextended.
His previous 4 starts he gave up 9 earned runs in 25.1 innings which is an ERA of 3.19. That included starts against the Cardinals and Mets.
IF the Guardians trade him the first thing they’ll want back is a controlled RH run producer which they badly need as they’re overrun with LH hitters. Consequently teams are using all the LH pitchers they have when playing the Guardians. The O’s don’t have a controlled RH run producer to trade, so there’s no fit there.

One other thing…..
Far too much is being made here (by both the writers and posters) about a players production within snippets of time during a season – good or bad.
Very few, if any, players pitch or hit consistently over the course of 162 games. To adequately explain why a player is doing well or poorly over a period of time that the statistics show, one would have to follow the team daily (as the broadcasters and writers do), and understand what each players role has been over that time period – what minor injuries they’re playing through and/or what he coaches are working with them on….not to mention who their opponents have been during that time.
Looking at general public statistics and drawing conclusions from them without understanding changes in the the variables that produce them is meaningless.

Samuel, hope all is well!
So there could be an underlying cause for Shane’s velo blip that will correct itself over the course of the season? Hmm. Didn’t think of that. Plausible, agreed!
To me, Mountcastle is that RH bat with plenty of team control. But, not a match with Cleveland because of Bell commitment?
Samuel
C Yards Jeff;
He might be tired or have a tired arm. This has been common among starting pitchers for the 65 years I’ve been watching MLB. Most pitchers pace themselves through the season, especially now that the game is all about the stretch run and the playoffs.

Goldie isn’t going anywhere. I doubt anyone will find significant pitching help in the trade market this year. They will have to overpay if they do find it.
Longtimecoming
I think you are right about the lack of pitching. This is why I think some out of the box trade will be required to grab a pitcher. Goldie has a 26 mil price tag (a lot for Cards) and would bring a haul. I think Goldie only has 1 more year. Maybe a team overpays for a package like that. Not predicting it but I think something like this will be seen this year just to get a needed pitcher. You get a year plus of a player like Goldie as a bonus.

The Cardinals will keep Goldschmidt so they can contend in 2024.
CardsFan57
I think it’s important to the Cardinals that Goldie retires a Cardinal. Another possible HOF Cardinal.
Longtimecoming
You may be right and of course he would be a valuable bat for any contending team.
Is it fair to ask, what makes the cardinals contend in 24 while they are not in 23? They don’t seem to spend a lot in FA. Where does the improvement come from?
CardsFan57
They have a lot of young players still developing. They will have to sign or trade for some pitching but they are fine with position players.
C Yards Jeff
I’m with ya Longtimecoming. If 23 is a bust for your Cards, move Goldy for sure. Someone like a Cleveland in desperate need of some offense now, a possible trade partner?
gbs42
Longtime,
I think it’s the fact that the Cardinals always try to contend. They’re not going to use 2024 as a rebuilding year.
CardsFan57
Longtimecoming is not a Cardinal fan. That’s why he thinks the Cardinals should trade a reasonably priced MVP level player
C Yards Jeff
Longtime not a Cardinals fan? Neither am I. I’m an Os fan. I vividly remember that incredible run of success the Birds had from the mid 60s in to the early 80s. It’s been a roller coaster ride since then for this fanatic. Definitely more misery than joy. What happened? Change of ownership. Hoffberger (thru 79) was the owner during that magical time. Simply stated he let his baseball people run the baseball operation.
I’m gonna guess the reason for your sustained success is because your owner doesn’t meddle. That said, your FO is solid baseball people. Without owner onterferenc, they’ll know what to do with Goldy.

Simon left? Man I really like him. Both him and Darragh do much more interesting chats than Steve, Anthony, and Mark.
I don’t mean to be disparagingbut the guys who’ve been here awhile answer similar questions in similar ways. I can get bees and beads or ridiculous trade questions answered but the more legit ones go unanswered over and over. I get it. It’s easier to comment Ohtani won’t be traded, than speculate on potential deals, but that’s boring. I’m not suggesting the hosts be dishonest but their blind spots are glaring. Ask anything critical of a successful FO and these guys revert to “ well they’ve been successful so far so why question them”.
That’s lazy, we can offer our perspectives on faults and strengths without damning someone’s whole performance. I love the usual writers posts and writing. All are amazing at that, but their chats get old quick. Please have Darragh and Nick do more chats. I’ve heard the other guys answer similar questions in similar ways for too long to keep my interest.
Rant over

You got that right Moon Man! I asked a very unique question about doesArraez have any value just hitting singles (few runs/rbi, no speed, no power) and the answer would have been fascinating (I think) but it would have required Steve to have an instant original thought (the horror!). Instead we get all the things you point out.
I agree, it’s just laziness…..
