The Mets announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Grant Hartwig, with fellow righty John Curtiss optioned in a corresponding move. The club already had vacancies on their 40-man roster and won’t need to make another move in that regard.
Hartwig, 25, doesn’t have the typical baseball trajectory. Tim Healey of Newsday did a profile on the right-hander back in the spring, detailing his unusual storyline. In the summer of 2021, Hartwig had just graduated from Miami University of Ohio, receiving a degree in microbiology. He was then preparing to go to medical school when the Mets called him up and offered him a contract as an undrafted free agent.
He would toss 11 2/3 innings in the lower levels of the minors that year but truly put himself on the map in 2022. He shot from Single-A to High-A then Double-A and Triple-A last year, eventually posting a 1.75 ERA in 56 2/3 innings. His 10.3% walk rate was a tad high but he struck out 35.5% of batters faced. He’s been back in Triple-A this year, posting a serviceable 4.21 ERA over 25 2/3 relief innings, striking out 29.7% of opponents while walking 12.7%.
Now just two years after getting that fateful phone call from the Mets, Hartwig is set to make his major league debut, giving the Mets a fresh arm in their bullpen. Since this is his first time cracking a major league roster, he has a full slate of options and can give the club some roster flexibility going forward.

Wow Grant Hartwig, the season is saved! Looks like I was right about the Mets and their offseason moves. I wouldn’t even hire Billy Eppler to clean the bathrooms at Citi Field

I don’t know why all the focus is on Buck?
InEptler has always been the problem..

@Canosucks Billy EFFler, because he EFFs everything up

@Canosucks is back!?!?!
The Mets must be winning tonight.

@MarlinsFanBase you’re right, they are currently up 6-0

Since you clean toilets for a life, I respect your take on GM’s
metzfan
he has a 1.6 whip, a high era and no history of success. fantastic
brooklyn62
The perfect resume for the Mets arson squad.
JackStrawb
@metzfan Incorrect, friendo. He had a superb 2022. —Granted, like Peterson and Megill a couple of years ago he shouldn’t be in the majors yet, but given how badly Cohen bungled the bullpen when he had all that sweet unspent Correa cash lying around and Andrew Chafin still available for next to nothing, it’s not surprising to see Hartwig on the MLB Mets.
bobbyvwannabe
One time prospect but thankfully due to solid drafts and international signings, he was pushed way down the Top 30 / depth chart.
I wish Grant success.
ExileInLA 2
With the Mets playing on a short roster, his job is to burn out his arm in a blowout loss. Otherwise he probably doesn’t see action.
rct
He’ll be the new Tommy Hunter.

Hartwig isn’t terrible. I wish him luck. But you can tell the Mets are reallllllly desperate since they’ve thrown three long-shot minor leaguers at the wall already this year in Muckenhirn, Walker and now Hartwig. Wondering why they haven’t tried T.J. McFarland yet; he’s had big league success and is doing well at Triple-A.
I imagine the Mets will give Nate Lavender a shot next.
Curtiss had to go. He started off well, but has been a dud recently. At least the Mets are learning early who they have to ditch…maybe they trade some of this dead weight in the near future.
Anyone in the market for Curtiss, Carrasco or Nido?
SeeUonTheUlnarSide
If the Mets sell, they will find a buyer for Carrasco easily. The starting market is extremely thin this deadline, and I don’t think many contenders want to pay a ransom for the “crown jewel” of the deadline, Lucas Giolito.
On a side note, I would be curious to see a comparison of SP injuries 2023 vs 2022. Methinks we will see big changes to the pitch clock after this year. Too many arms are getting burned out.

I hope you’re right.

There’s a new relief pitcher ready to make his MLB debut for the Mets every week. That’s when happens when you build a garbage bullpen.

Mets should grab Anthony Bass
MarlinsFanBase
Yes, Mets should grab up Anthony Bass! I agree. Afterall, he was truly their 2021 MVP because he won them more games than Lindor did.
As a Marlins fan, I absolutely want the Mets to pick up Bass!
Canosucks
At this point other than Alonso the Mets should come out and say they are sellers, and no one is out for conversation.
Only trade the young talent for equally young players if they are a better fit and not some aging 30 somethings.
Can Eppler at the end of the year.
Turn out the lights the parties over and that from a many decades long Mets fan.
LFGMets (Metsin7)
@Canosucks I’d agree with you if Eppler wasn’t the GM. I don’t trust him at all in trades. I mean Holderman for Vogelfat. Jd Davis + prospects for Darin Ruf. He just keeps making mistake after mistake
Skip Church
What else would you expect from Eppler? He was like their 11th choice for GM.

@Canosucks
I love how you say “…and that from a many decades long Mets fan.” You forgot to mention the part about only popping up when the weather is fair in Mets land or when they are winning a game…always disappearing when things are not going good or their are losing a game. Unless you want to indicate that all Mets are like that…which to me and many others would find cool as a message, even hilarious.
Motor City Beach Bum
Mets need to call the Tigers for some pitching help…Lorenzen and/or Erod plus lots of good BP arms to be had fir the right price. Do some bulk shopping. Send Kevin Parada and Mark Vientos our way. You need pitchers and they are blocked in NY anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound!
