Aaron Judge hasn’t played since June 3, when the Yankees superstar made a highlight-reel catch that sent him crashing through Dodger Stadium’s right field bullpen door. Judge sprained his right big toe while colliding with the concrete base under the bullpen door, and after two weeks on the sidelines, it remains unclear when Judge might return from the 10-day injured list.
After Judge received a PRP injection on June 6, the outfielder got another shot focused on a different ligament on Thursday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty and MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch). “Any time you strain or tear the ligaments, it takes time to heal that, honestly. PRPs hopefully speed that process up,” Boone said. “Hopefully he’s continuing to move in the right direction. We feel like he was, but that other part of the joint or of the toe…was still giving him problems after the first PRP. To get in and hit the other parts of it, hopefully is something that speeds [the process].”
Range-of-motion exercises are the next step on Judge’s rehab plan, and further steps towards baseball activities remain fluid, as the Yankees are naturally being cautious. Owner Hal Steinbrenner said earlier this week that Judge’s sprain was “like a turf toe,” and “a rare injury for a baseball player…I think it’s common in football probably with running backs.”
Kuty spoke with Dr. Spencer Stein of NYU Langone Health about Judge’s injury, and while Stein hasn’t personally examined the outfielder, the orthopedic surgeon said that a second PRP injection isn’t particular unusual for such an injury. Stein suggested that Judge could be back by mid-July, though Boone provided a broader range of potential return dates.
First saying “there’s a shot” that Judge could return before the All-Star break, Boone added that “he could be back in a week. He could be back in four. I don’t know. We’ve got to get to a point where we’re starting to move the ball from a physical activity or baseball standpoint.”
It’s no secret that Judge is the cornerstone of the Yankees roster, and the last two weeks have only underscored his importance to the lineup. From June 4 to June 16, Yankee batters have hit a collective .205/.264/.361, with a 71 wRC+ that ranks as the third-worst in baseball during that span.
Some reinforcements may be on the way in the form of Harrison Bader, though Bader opted to extend his minor league rehab stint probably through the weekend. As Boone told the New York Daily News’ Gary Phillips and other reporters, Bader wanted more than just one rehab game to ensure that his right hamstring strain was fully healed. Bader was placed on the IL on May 29, and between this absence and a left oblique strain that cost him over the first month of the season, the outfielder has played in only 26 games this season (hitting .267/.295/.511 with six home runs in 95 plate appearances).
On the pitching side, Carlos Rodon is slated to begin his minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday. Between a forearm strain and then a back problem, Rodon has yet to make his Yankee debut since joining the club on a six-year, $162MM free agent deal in December. Early July is Rodon’s target date, as Boone said the plan is for Rodon to make three rehab outings with steadily increasing pitch counts.
I’m impressed w yanks ability to stay above 500.
Not Sergeant Hulka’s ‘BIG TOE!!’ again!!!!!
But his little piggy is staying home.
He’ll Probably be back sometime right after the All-Star break. Hopefully before. Doubt it.
In the meantime there are 3 players that might help the yanks Mike yastrzemski Tony Kemp and Dylan Cease the last one might cost them but for Dylan Cease they could work out a package deal with gleyber Torres and schmidt plus Alexander vargas and will Warren these guys, the aforementioned players might just might get the yanks over the hump…
1. White Sox aren’t interested in trading Cease or any other players controlled through 2024. They’ve made that pretty clear.
2. Even if they somehow were willing to do that, they wouldn’t be interested in Torres or Schmidt
@Reardon65- I feel that Cody Bellinger should be the player the Yankees should be looking at, probably closer by the trading deadline, he’s the type of player they really need. The players you mentioned I like. I just look at Bellinger as a better player of the players you mentioned. Keep an eye on Joc Peterson for the Yankees also.
@Mattime009- I think there is a better chance for the Yankees to land Giolito then Cease. The Sox would or should be interested in Gleyber and Schmidt in a Giolito trade for sure. I doubt Giolito would sign with the White Sox long term. The Sox would be wise to move him at the trading deadline.
That’s not getting Cease. Giolito or Clevinger maybe, but not Cease. Cashman has proven time and again an unwillingness to part with top prospects in trades and that is no different today.
Cease is really, really good. I have no idea why the White Sox would want to even entertain trading him. My guess is he won’t be traded. The Yankees would have to give up Dominguez and Peraza in a Cease deal, they aren’t likely to do that.
Sorry Yaz isn’t going anywhere. To valuable to the Giants.
Giants dodged a big bullet, be not getting Judge and Rondon
Joc isn’t going to the Yankees, unless the Giants are out of the race.
Me too.
Lol, ohhh. Ok, hotshot. We’re gonna see what kind of soldier you are…
Hahahaha
Oh he’s fcked. Sprained my elbow ligament and it’s been 6 weeks and hasn’t healed at all. Doesn’t hurt much but I can definitely feel it every time I curl anything above 10 pounds.
You probably need to get two PRP injections, get a MRI, and hire a pro sports rehab specialist and a nutritionist to get back into game shape.
Or…Stop doing Curls until it heals
Bummer, I hope you will be back to gaming soon bruh
I sprained it masturbating.
At least you’re onan up to it.
Hand got got digging into your Pants trying to find it? 🙂
Who else thinks he’ll surpass A Rod’s HR record?
If you look at Aaron’s stats, yes he’s 31 but he’s the best power hitter in baseball aside from Pete Alonso
I think his injury history is going to be a problem throughout his career. It will prevent him from crushing records.
You think he’ll hit more than 500?
What “Home Run record” would that be? ARod has no Home Run records. Now if you mean will he pass ARod on the HR record list then the answer is no. Judge at 31 sits at 239 and will still need to hit 458 more to pass Rodriguez and would need to average 40 HR’s per season for the next decade to get there. Judge’s body type doesn’t lend much hope that he’ll age well enough to stay on the field that long, let alone produce at that level.
By the time ARod was Judge’s age he had already hit 518. Even if you account for the age difference when they started subtracting ARod’s first 6 seasons he still hit 370 Home Runs to this point in Judge’s career
A Rod has 696 home runs. He’s in the top 10 I believe
Quite so. That is the least of our worries regarding this team. We need to find a way to keep judge on the field period. Teams sucks without him. Who cares how many career records he breaks.
Judge is awesome and sorely missed, but his absence isn’t causing the rest of the players to hit at such an anemic rate. Judge missing time is a big issue for the team, but there’s clearly many other issues on the roster.
I’m not proclaiming Aaron Judge to be the greatest player in history, or even right now, but it’s interesting how terrible the Yankees are without him. It’s almost NBA-like how this single player carries an entire team.
What is this offense thing you’re talking about??
In all my years as a Yankees fan I’ve never seen an offense so completely dependent upon the presence of a single person in the lineup, and that includes the so-called Horace Clarke years. It shows how poorly the roster has been constructed, despite the big money invested in salaries. As much as I appreciate the overall job Cashman has done during his tenure as GM, I truly believe nothing will ever change until he’s replaced. The bad decision to retain him shows that the son (Hal) is just as capable of making bad ‘baseball decisions’ as his father (GMS).
Quite so.
In all fairness to the Horace Clarke years, the Orioles were pretty dominant.
Without Judge the Yankees is like the Althletics.
Oakland is playing better than the Yankees. We wish we were the Athletics.
As a Red Sox fan, I hope Brian Cashman is the decision maker there for the foreseeable future
I’m sure you’ll get your wish.
Now will I get my wish for the Sox to keep Bloom around?
And Cora, too. RS fans love him.
I hope you don’t! Bloom and co. need to be out after this season
If Judge wants to get back soon, he needs to call ARod. I’m sure ARod knows a guy who can help out.
Yup.haha
Bring back the PEDs. Guys were never injured and were superstars. Now they seem to all get hurt.
Over training is the issue….PEDs allowed your body to recover and back in the day these guys did other jobs other than baseball in the off-season it gave them a break. Now it’s, let’s go to Puerto Rico, the Dominican, or Venezuela for winter ball. It’s definitely the problem in the NBA as well, football is different. Football the problem is they aren’t taking enough hits in practice to prepare their bodies for game day
Judge needs to get in touch Bob Buffett, he has some special cream for that aching hoof.
My money says Bader will be back on the IL again before Judge returns – just call it a premonition. My money also says Rodon will have another “setback” and MIGHT return in August.
Agreed.
unless they add at least 1 more bat at the deadline the team’s offense will stay middle of the road with this scrubs-and-star construction. best chance is severino, rodon and nestor back at full strength and win a bunch of 3-2 games
Yes. And even one bat may not be enough.
Hopefully, Judge has learned a lesson that Fred Lynn and Pete Rieser never learned. Crashing into Fences or Walls does not add to Longevity. .
You Save 1 Game but you’re out for the next 25-50 or maybe even the Season. .
The League should Fine or penalize the Dodgers for having Exposed Concrete on the Field. It’s negligent of them to not have some sort of padding there. JMO
Yes. And yes.
I feel like the Judge’s timeline for a possible return will be similar to how long Jazz Chisholm has been out with the toe injury he suffered. He was given a 4-6 week recovery time frame when he was injured on May 13th. He’s still a couple weeks away from coming back. So in all likelihood, best case scenario for Judge’s return would be right after the AS break. I’d be very surprised if he’s back before the break. They’re going to make sure he’s 100% before they give him the green light to come back.
Yes. And now its a no win situation.so much money invested in judge, they will always be overcautious, resulting in less playing time for him. Frustrating.
Cashman has put together an all-star I.L. team
Haha. Sad but true.
To Cashman’s credit, he can’t control injuries to half of the line-up, Judge, Stanton, Donaldson, Bader, Rizzo, and and Trivino have missed time. They also have lost a lot of pitching in Rodon, Sevy, German, Trivino, Kahnle, Loasigna, and others.
You don’t sign over bulked hitters unless you’re willing to accept the increase in injury likelihood. Sure, some bulked up players remain healthy, but buy a large, the bulk of them experience this and that and the other thing, AKA boo-boos.
As for the pitchers, some of that is bulk and some is senseless overuse in the desire to win every game, AKA bulking up on the innings and outings.
This Yankees klub has it backwards, they should seek nay bulk.
Cashman can control the likelihood of injuries by avoiding the over 30 crowd and drafting and developing well. He does the opposite.
I hate to speculate, but I think Judge’s injury is more serious than what the Yankees are letting on. I would not be surprised if Judge is done for the season.
Another avoidable injury and example #9862 of why you don’t give up your body to make a play, if you are important for your team’s success.
In Judge’s defense, his toe is freaking huge. I mean freakishly huge. He is a giant, and he stubbed his toe on Dodger Stadium and broke their little fence that they got there. We will be ok!
