The Giants announced that right-hander Ross Stripling has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Stripling will take the roster spot left open by Luke Jackson, who is headed to the 15-day IL himself due to a lower back strain.
Stripling has missed over five weeks due to his own back strain, and the injury layoff might effectively serve as a reset to his first season with the Giants. Over his first 32 1/3 innings of the season, Stripling posted a 7.24 ERA while allowing 10 home runs. While naturally a small sample size, these struggles are a big step back from the impressive numbers Stripling posted with the Blue Jays in 2022, when the righty delivered a 3.01 ERA over 134 1/3 frames (and with only 12 total homers allowed).
It isn’t what San Francisco was expecting when it signed Stripling to a two-year, $25MM free agent deal in the offseason. His early struggles led the Giants to pretty quickly move him to the bullpen, though Stripling found himself back in the rotation due to some other injuries within the starting staff. Between Stripling’s return and Alex Cobb’s expected activation from the IL later this week, the Giants are getting closer to having their full complement of starting pitchers available.
It remains to be seen if Stripling will indeed continue to work as a starter, or if he might return to a straight relief role or a hybrid of the two in his old swingman role. The Giants’ choice is probably between Stripling and Sean Manaea as the fifth starter, or the team could use both in a piggyback capacity, or perhaps move both pitchers in and out of the rotation as a floating sixth starter to give the other starters some extra rest when necessary. This is the type of flexibility San Francisco was looking for in signing Stripling in the first place, though naturally the righty will have to get back on track performance-wise.
Jackson left yesterday’s game due to his back injury, and he’ll now unfortunately head back to the IL after already missing the entire 2022 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Giants only activated him on May 30, and Jackson pitched well in his first nine appearances of 2023, posting a 2.16 ERA, 30.3% strikeout rate, and 6.1% walk rate over 8 1/3 innings.

Hope he figured something out while he was gone because he has been a total dumpster fire this year.
claude raymond
hmm…dumpster fire…that’s a good one. I’ve never heard that expression before. Thx ted, I’m always looking for original sayings. You’re the bomb. word.
Old York
Just in time to join their run to being the 2023 World Series Champions.

You tell ‘em Old York!

This league is so soft…

I assumed that it wasn’t even a real injury, that Stripling was so bad that they phantom IL’d him. Don’t want to see any more embarrassing starts from him or Manea, though a credit to the latter for being slightly better lately in swingman duty.
foppert1
Slightly better is ridiculous. Dudes been great in the new role. Strikeout machine.
claude raymond
Haven’t heard from Scott in awhile. I’m curious why. I guess he was looking for a story he could pounce on thinking his post would be agreeable to all the other past whiners. Cmon Scott, the bandwagon has a couple spots left.
foppert1
Of course, Claude. It’s taken a Ross Stripling thread to bring back a couple of doomers. Funny stuff.
scottn59c
Oh, stop, Claude – we’re on the same side. Maybe I’m more of a kvetcher than a cheerleader, it’s true. Yes, I’m glad the team’s doing better, and I’m usually lurking around here, not always feeling compelled to jump in.
It’s not “whining” to offer criticism of Stripling; he’s sucked badly this year. I’m glad the investment in Manea isn’t a total loss, but frankly, he was not paid to be a relief pitcher and swingman – he ended up in that position because he stank and got demoted.
Not every move is a win, ok? Gimme a break if I feel like venting some frustration at the contracts that have come up short. If it makes you and foppert feel any better, I’m pleased to concede I was wrong about Conforto, and to be fair, how much dumping on Zaidi did I really do? Some of us were pretty bummed out when he came up short last year. It’s good to see a team that looks far more like a real competitor this season.
foppert1
Why should you get a break ?
You don’t give Zaidi or Kapler one. Learn to take what you dish out.
scottn59c
I’m not particularly enamored with Zaidi or Kapler, that’s my opinion. But I’ve also never been one to post with a black and white “you’re either for us or against us” kind of mentality; I’ll leave that to you.
foppert1
I’m not enamoured with folks who minimise the good and exaggerate the bad. When that exaggeration is aimed at decent humans involved with the team I support, I will roll with an us and them mentality. Sorry.
scottn59c
Do yourself a favor and mute everyone who disagrees with you.
foppert1
No. My preference is to bounce back unfair negativity.
claude raymond
We’re not on the same side.
claude raymond
The problem with you Scott is that early on you based all of your whining on hindsight and had no knowledge to have any foresight. You questioned, no you doubted every aspect of management. And still you’re pin pointing ONE aspect. Stripling. And what if he returns to last year’s form and proves you wrong, YET AGAIN. Based on the year he had last year he was a good signing, but when he struggles you whine…yes you whine a TON. I looked at previous Scott posts. First base, 2nd base and 3rd base were hopeless in your mind. You said farm system was horrible. So yeah, we’re not on same team. Point out one current struggling player and we’re supposed view your opinion as valid. And its not even halfway point. Rag about management when the rest of the league is awed by their success. #6 in recent poll. Do you think that happens with a weak manager ? Read some of the articles about how happy the clubhouse is. Kapler is managing his butt off. What are you gonna rag about if stripling finds his way 2022 form. How about you follow the international signings all the Scotts griped about?. “fans” were po’d about the Giants signing the 15th rated international and not going for a higher player. I’m sure you had something to say cuz everything was a Scott target. Rayner Arias, Giants top international signing. Centerfielder hitting 400 with 4 homers in 15 games. I follow that stuff and you don’t. We are not on the same team.
claude raymond
Btw, no international signing before is remotely having the year Arias is having.
claude raymond
*before 15
foppert1
And Kaplers never said a sincere word in his life.
But yeah…..”please don’t criticise me, we are on the same team”
claude raymond
*signing before 15
scottn59c
@Claude,
Sorry, but you are coming off as a serious blowhard right now. You and foppert are making it seem like everyone must drink the kool-aid to buy into the management and construction of this team 100% or get dogpiled on.
Kapler’s glib and superficial PR speeches to the media leave me cold. Zaidi’s penny-pinching antics started to grow quite frustrating after four or five long years. There were tons of questions with the roster coming into this year. Rolling with Wade jr at first, a very long-in-the-tooth Crawford at short, and David Villar at 3B didn’t exactly inspire me with confidence. Wade’s bounceback (and Yaz’s) have been pleasant surprises. So has the emergence of JD Davis. Starting pitching is OK, but not playoff-worthy, and I grit my teeth when the ball is handed to Manaea or Stripling. Hard to know which Alex Wood you’re going to get from outing to outing, but generally, not the one you want after he gets through a lineup more than twice. Stripling and Manaea sure look like stiffs to me, but I’ll happy to be wrong and reassess should they pull it out. Speaking of reassessing, what you think you might know about today’s prospects in regards to tomorrow is pie in the sky. If and when those guys graduate from AAA , we’ll see how well that translates to the bigs.
Sorry to see all the “we’re not on the same team” and “us vs them” mentality around here. We’ve got a real problem with that in society, and it’s easy to see how and why it perpetuates here.
foppert1
And there’s no problem in society with negative exaggeration being aimed at people. Of course not.
FFS. “Poor me. I’m such a victim of an us v them mentality”.
Pathetic.
