Cubs ace Marcus Stroman exited his start against the Cardinals in London this morning after just 3 1/3 innings of work due to a blister on his right index finger. Fortunately, as noted by Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, the injury is not currently considered to be particularly serious. In conversation with reporters following the game, Stroman pointed out that this wasn’t the first time he’s dealt with blisters in his career, likely referencing his 2018 trip to the IL with a blister on his right middle finger. That stint on the shelf ultimately lasted two weeks, but Stroman says that he’s optimistic he’ll be able to make his next start, which would likely be slated for next weekend’s series against the Guardians.
It’s hard to overstate Stroman’s importance in keeping the Cubs afloat this season. After today’s loss to the Cardinals in London, the north siders sport a 37-39 record that leaves them just three games back of the Reds for the division title in a weak NL Central. That the club remains within striking distance in the division can be attributed heavily to the performance of Stroman, whose 2.28 ERA entering play today led the NL, while his 196 ERA+ led the majors.
Stroman’s dominant performance so far this season has made it seem like a no-brainer for him to decline a $21MM player option following the 2023 campaign and test the open market. Despite that, he’s been vocal about his desire to stay in Chicago even as the lack of extension discussions have led to trade speculation. Whether the Cubs ultimately fall out of contention as the calendar flips to July and the trade rumors intensify or the club cements itself as contenders who will continue to lean on their best pitcher down the stretch\, the club is surely hoping for a quick return to the mound for the veteran right-hander. In the event Stroman does miss time, the Cubs seem likely to rely on the services of youngster Hayden Wesneski in his stead.
More from Chicago…
- Speaking of veteran right-handers who could draw interest from clubs ahead of the trade deadline on August 1, the White Sox might welcome Mike Clevinger back to the active roster prior to the All Star break. Manager Pedro Grifol indicated to reporters, including MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, that a return prior to the midsummer classic was possible, but that he won’t return in a relief role and will be held out until he can be built back up to rotation-length outings. Clevinger has offered solid if uninspiring consistency at the back of the south side’s rotation this season, pitching to a 3.88 ERA and 4.88 FIP in 62 2/3 innings of work. A return before the All Star break could give potential suitors additional confidence in Clevinger’s health ahead of the trade deadline, when the 34-45 White Sox seem likely to sell off rental assets.
- Sticking with the White Sox, one hurler who Grifol asserts will definitely not return prior to the All Star break is closer Liam Hendriks, who is on the shelf with right elbow inflammation. While Hendriks initially expressed optimism he could return in a couple of weeks, citing a similar injury last season that cost him three weeks, Grifol’s updated timeline would put the right-hander out of action for over a month. Hendriks has pitched just five innings this season between his current stint on the IL and his recovery from a battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. With Hendriks on the shelf, Kendall Graveman has stepped in as the closer for the White Sox this season.

Are the Cubs in dire straits?

That was Mark Knopfler and a few other guys.

Stroman and his typical selfish attitude have not improved this season yet someone will bring him in hoping that he won’t poison the clubhouse.
Oldguy58
Poison the clubhouse? A year ago I would’ve agreed with you, however his teammates love him and he recently gave every teammate a Nintendo Switch. He wants to stay in Chicago but the front office wonks won’t talk to him about an extension.
cwsOverhaul
He negotiated for the opt out. Cubs should keep a guy who will be 33 next year motivated rather than extend (or trade if the club is stuck around .500 at deadline).

I know the cubs play like a little league team, making the Nintendo Switch just the right gift for those adolescents.

@nottinghamforest13 ,
Which player on the Cubs are you in real life? You seem very well informed on internal team matters.
Doug Dascenzo's Mob Boss Dad
Which of these hurt Stroman more in today’s game? The blister or Trey Mancini’s “defense” at first base?
Oldguy58
Mancini

Can’t argue with that assessment.

Mancini has been depressing all year.

Yeah, I feel bad being so critical of a cancer survivor who managed to make it all the way back and resume baseball activities. As a human being, Mancini seems like a solid guy. But as a player, he’s terrible.

Graveman has made himself a luxury on this Sox team. ERA of 2.70, solid WHIP of 1.050, H9 is just 5.1. Sox don’t need a solid closer since they don’t have many opportunities for him. Every loss now would just improve their chances at a high draft pick.
I still want them to rebuild, even trading away Robert (keeping Cease until the offseason in hopes he can recover last year’s form).. I know it’d be the same two clowns in charge of this rebuild as the last, but I can at least dream on prospects until they prove me wrong. This current group has proven they can’t win. Maybe that adage about blind squirrels finding nuts will come into play with the next rebuild.

Sox are not trading Robert

The Sox would be insane to trade Robert for anything. I get that ‘Bottom Dollar Jerry’ won’t want to pay him, but he is a rare talent who, with a good manager, can reach his potential considering how well he is doing under the Stiff in the manager’s office now.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
That’s *why* I want him to be traded. This team is going nowhere, even with him. He won’t be around by the time a rebuild ends. The Sox would only make their draft slot worse and lengthen their rebuild by keeping him. Give one good reason they should keep him when they have no way to build a winner around him.
Spotswood
Personally I would consider trading him. This may be a career year, so sell high. That being said, the Sox have Robert signed through ’25. Only paying him $15M. They have 2 club option years @ $20M each. So basically signed affordably through 2027.
But only way to quickly turn a rebuild and make the Sox a competitor in 2026, is to sell everyone now or in the offseason. That includes Cease, because he’s a FA after ’25. No way the Sox resign him. He’s a Boras client, which means he’s going to FA. 2 years of control of Cease would get a sizeable group of prospects. Unfortunately he may have lost a little value this year.

Yes what follows is knowing well about ‘bottom dollar Jerry’ and this ineptly run franchise, but if Robert is the generational type of player people think he can be (and what he is starting to look like), you do not trade him, you sign him, and no this isn’t like a pitcher who is one throw away from TJS and two years on the shelf. He is also not the only guy on the Roster who can help you win when you have Benintendi killing it at leadoff and Cease and Kopech showing flashes of being great. They still can ‘retool’, or ‘rebuild on the fly’, whatever Hahn wants to describe it as, but given that Hahn is still around,my guess is there is no massive rebuild in the cards, I do also not trust Hahn to get absolute value for a guy like Robert anyway. They should keep him and sign him. Yeah, I get that’s very very likely that is not the reality that will show here, but I cannot condone the Sox getting rid of Robert when he is showing he has what it takes to be a generational talent player. he just needs a coaching and conditioning staff behind him that know what they are doing. I would say at the very very least, you keep him until next season and see if the ‘blind squirrel’ front office can find the nut once and make some other trades this season that make the team better for next season and also think about making Montoya the manager as Grifol apparently has no clue what he is doing. I mean, seriously, Grifol is reminding me of Ventura, and that’s not a compliment. Robert going means another 5+ years of mediocrity only for JR to throw a wrench into the works like he did by forcing LaRussa back into the fold a couple of years ago.
Spotswood
I guess I see a Sox rebuild and the point they’re again a top team to be more than 2 years. Sox need a 2nd, SS, 3rd, RF, C, 3 starters and probably a couple bullpen arms.
nrd1138
I just have to laugh when Im hearing Benetti and Beckham talking about the Sox like they have any sort of chance.. I guess they want to gloss over the fact they are 11 games under 500 with the season half over. At this point, if they happen to somehow find a way to win the Central (which is just silly to think about even with as bad as the Central is) its still laughable that they have ANY shot at beating any playoff caliber teams. The Sox need to realize the silliness of trying to patchwork this team into any sort of contender and sell sell sell. Anyone NOT named Kopech, Cease, or Robert can go for the right price. I say find someway to get ‘ouch, my -insert injury here-‘ Moncada off of their team and salvage some money back somehow, I think with he and Anderson gone, it gets the locker room in better shape. Trade Gio and Lynn (I doubt they can rid themselves of Clevinger but maybe he somehow gets better before the trade deadline), stretch out those ‘Bullpen day’ guys and see what they can do over 6 innings.. Who knows, maybe there is something there with at least one of those guys. Trade Vaughn or Sheets and get Colas back up here to finish out the season as well. Time to see whats going to be available for next season.
Spotswood
Agree on this, although Robert is the guy I would potentially hold onto. The Sox have enough individual talent to quickly turn a rebuild.
Spotswood
Benetti is a cheerleader. Part of his job should be to educate viewers, instead he’s Baghdad Bob. Sox need to go 20-7 to be @ .500 Aug 1. I don’t see 14 wins with that schedule. In fact, I’d be surprised if they didn’t drop further under .500.
The only way to acquire players now is via trade. They don’t have the minor league assets to get a couple difference makers. So the only option they have is to start shedding players.
nrd1138
The Sox do not have a lot guys with high value to trade and likely are going to have to hope their scouting dept can find some diamonds in AA and AAA squads of other teams for guys like Giolito, Lynn, Grandal, Graveman, Kelly, Moncada, Anderson, Vaughn and/or Sheets. None of these guys are going to be worth top prospects. Also the Sox are going to just have to trust that some of these guys they have in AA and AAA can come up and surprise. I would have these guys moved and have Colas up here, maybe Sanchez, maybe Montgomery as well.. A catching prospect as well as Zavala either needs to try a traditional bat, or go away. One good hitting game a season is not enough. Lets see what these guys can do, good or bad. The Sox have nothing to lose and if they were smart would give a chance to these kids a chance for a half season and see what they have to work with..
nrd1138
Its too quiet for this White Sox org. Where are the moves? Like teams are not lining up for player for their runs?I get the Sox do not have A listers, but they have some pieces that someone should want. I mean the Sox just lost 2 of 3 (at the time of this post, maybe getting swept today, by the doormat A’s) and its obvious this team is going nowhere and clearly not motivated to play well. They finished out as they started June with an abysmal (fairly sure it was 13 games under when June started and they finished the same) under .500 record. It does not matter if the Sox are only 5-6 GB in this division, this is a really awful team, not all of it, certain players need to go either by trade or release to send a message to the rest of this… ‘under performing’ (the nicest way I can put it) team. The Sox need to start selling now, and retooling. Unless Hahn and company are simply in ‘CYA’ mode to look good for the ‘chairman’. There are about 9-10 players they may get something for (not a lot but something). Fire Grifol (I do not care if its only half a season, its clear he really has no clue to manage a club, another bottom dollar misfire) and really most if not all of the coaching staff (or have Montoyo finish out the rest of the year as manager), get a new conditioning staff (Id be combing the country for a guy like Herm Schneider).. and, lets be honest, it would be great if they would get an actual ball buster of a GM and manager and maybe, MAYBE they can build this team into something good fairly quickly.. or at least look like a competent team being put out there.
Sadly most of this will not happen (Im not sure if any of this will happen actually) in which case, get ready for more mediocrity for next season.
