The Cardinals announced that they have acquired infielder/outfielder Richie Palacios from the Guardians in exchange for cash considerations. Palacios, who was designated for assignment by the Guards on the weekend, has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis. In order to open a spot on the 40-man roster, outfielder Tyler O’Neill has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Palacios, 26, was originally selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2018 draft. He’s generally been considered a bat-first utility player and hit his way up the minor league ladder. He was added to the club’s 40-man roster in November of 2021 to prevent him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.
He spent last year as a frequently-optioned depth piece, getting into 54 major league contests. But in his 123 plate appearances, he hit just .232/.293/.286 for a wRC+ of 65. He continued his strong offensive work whenever in the minors, finishing the year with a line of .279/.371/.458 in Triple-A and a 121 wRC+. However, this year, he’s slumped badly while sticking in the minors. He currently sports a line of .217/.351/.318 through 269 Triple-A plate appearances on the year.
Palacios has been bounced around the field a bit in his career to get his bat into lineups. He’s played second base and left field in the majors and also the other outfield positions in the minors. But since his bat is considered his best trait, his struggles this year got him bounced from the Guards to the Cards. The Cardinals have a penchant for developing versatile position players and will now try to get the most out of Palacios. He still has options and less than a year of service time, allowing him to serve as an optionable and versatile depth piece for the foreseeable future.
As for O’Neill, he was placed on the injured list in early May due to a lower back strain. There’s been nothing to indicate he’s particularly close to a return since he’s yet to start a rehab assignment that would be required before rejoining the big league club. That makes this transaction a mere formality as the 60-day count goes from his initial IL placement, not today’s transfer. He’ll be eligible to be reinstated in early July if he makes significant progress in the next two weeks.

While I don’t think this is any big move, this shows the GMs are talking and possibly working a different trade as well.
kma
Way to go, Mo!
Mattimeo09
Which different trade are you hoping for?
Monkey’s Uncle
“Anybody seen Richie?”

Based on the Cardinals recent trade results, Cash Considerations will most likely represent the Guardians in a future All Star game.

Seamaholic
Well OK. Aren’t the Cards stuffed to the brim with corner OFers, including the ones playing CF?
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Situation in the outfield is very…fluid…at the moment. And once-vaunted utility player/bench Yepez has lost a bit of shine, of late.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Yepez is traded this year…along with others in search of starting pitching.
omahamadness
precursor for trading DeJong and Edman at the deadline
asdfgh
Not a chance we trade Edman, not when he’s under control still and will take over SS if we trade Dejong. Just depends on what the cards can get for Paulie now that he’s cooled off a bit wouldn’t mind him getting hot now and becoming something we could package for a good starting pitcher possibly with Herrara. This is just a move to increase depth. I can see us clearing some room on the roster but it’s coming from OF and possible FA pitchers. I wish we could find someone to take Matz as I don’t see him regaining form either. The front office went cheap, the promised Arenado $ would be used to bolster lineup and all we got was Wilson. Totally forgot about pitching I guess. Our manager isn’t doing us any favors with his calls as well as he’s done two players dirty this year bringing it out in the media. Doesn’t bode well for chemistry or encouraging players when the coach is behind you. Wonder if Schildt would come back. That man did us wonders keeping chemistry and getting out of slumps I also liked ball talk as it seemed to help the team
King of Cards
Edman for Bieber makes sense. Even if this season is lost it still makes sense. The Indians have a lot of pitching Williams is coming up soon and they need a shortstop.
solaris602
CLE has a glut of middle infielders in AA, AAA, and at the major league level. What they REALLY need is a RF.
iH8PaperStraws
Except Bieber is not a available. The guardians are in second place in their very winnable division. Come September they will probably be in the drivers seat to win the ALC.
Daryl Pauley
Some savants think Bieber will be available even if they are in contention because he is not pitching at an elite level and has lost velocity. And I believe there are a couple of prospects who can carry the load. August 1st will tell the tale.
This one belongs to the Reds
If you think that will get you Bieber, you are SADLY mistaken and I gave no skin in the game.
Cardsfanatik redux
I’m not trading Edman for Bieber if I’m St. Louis. Bieber isn’t the Bieber of old. His velocity is in the tank, and ALL of his numbers are trending the wrong direction. You can blah blah all you want about who’s crazy for trading who, but Edman at this point, has more value than Bieber to the Cardinal’s. His K/9 are down 2 1/2 points. His xERA (expected ERA) is 4.65, his FIP is 3.83 (highest of his career) his xFIP is also 4.22, again, highest of his career. The average exit velo against him this year is at a career high as well. I’m not here saying Edman is Ted Williams or anything. Just that, IF I’m trading Edman, its NOT for a guy trending the wrong way with a fastball that won’t break a pane of glass.
TheOtherMikeD
They ran Schildt out of town for disagreeing with upper management. There’s no way he’s coming back.
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Unfortunately, Mo only wants a “yes man,” so Schildt is a no go. Some team would be lucky to have him.
asdfgh
Yeah I know definitely our yes man either now is lacking anything. He even said he didn’t call a team meeting after this. Isn’t a coach supposed to either get the team aligned and inspire and motivate these guys throughout the season show them belief. I often wonder what our franchise would be like had we hired Tito (Terry) instead of Matheny, I believe he would have gotten us a few rings and still be our manager to this day
iH8PaperStraws
And that’s why the next manager should be DeMarlo Hale.
Slider_withcheese
Maybe you’re clueless on how trades work. The offering up your garbage in hopes of landing talent doesn’t do it. I know you’re a cardinal fan so I don’t expect much, but thinking you’re getting anything of significance for Paul De Jong or Steven Matz is so delusional. Your currency is Goldschmidt, Carlson, Arenado, Edman, Hicks, Flaherty, Montgomery and even the baby giraffe himself Walker. The only one you keep is Nolan Gorman but it’s St Louis so obviously he’ll be the one they trade.
Jonny5
Did they delete the emotionally unstable troll’s account again? Awe, poor little fella.

What’s that homer can’t read, I said a package. You know like if the wizard of oz excised you’d need a package a of a brain and heart you clueless hater. Need to make more accounts and haven’t learned a thing you simp.

Lol he’s guilty so not a surprise you support him troll and got duped bc you are a hateful simp. You can click you heels and shove them where the sun don’t shine which I am guessing is 24/7 for you loser in parents basement. Eating White Castle bc that’s all you can afford on your food stamps. Trailer park garbage
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Edman’s not going anywhere. He bails us out in so many ways, I don’t think they’ll let him go for any reason.
nottinghamforest13
DeJong has no value. That doesn’t mean he won’t get moved, but nothing of significance is coming back in exchange.
bpskelly
The season is now saved by… Richie Palacios!!!
waterdog311
The question is can he manage?
CardsFan57
Can he manage or be a pitching coach? I’m amazed how the new pitching coach is completely ignored with the entire staff performing below career levels.
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Agree. At this point, it definitely seems like a new pitching coach is justified. The results from our arms is making a move necessary, IMO.
Daryl Pauley
Or they could just be bad pitchers on a team that can’t do anything right up to this point. Blake was praised for his analytics recently but there has to be somebody who can spot a pitcher’s negative tendencies and help with mechanics. Is Blake that pitching coach. Wainwright might be but will his family let him transition to coach or insist he stay home as a family man.
gbs42
What are the odds Waino wants to coach right away after a long MLB career? I imagine he’ll take some time off, likely a few years.
cq1234
I’m going to guess that we never see Tyler O’Neill in a Cardinal uniform ever again. I hate it because of how much potential she showed at times but the guy can’t stay healthy and he’s inconsistent when he is on the field.
CardsFan57
A 26 yo prospect who is failing in the minors. I don’t see the point for a team brimming with better position players at AAA.
King of Cards
ONeill has been treated like garbage by the organization from day one. Him and Bader and Wong it’s all the same thing the organization doesn’t like young guys with a personality. The Edmans and Donovans of the world get all the love be scrappy and keep your mouth shut and you will go far. But the team treated ONeill like garbage it’s time for both sides to move on.
ONeill sat all 3 games in the 2020 postseason and then when literally nothing changed we traded Fowler away and finally gave ONeill the job. If anyone can explain that I would love to hear it.
cq1234
Not quite sure what you mean by this. He’s had all the opportunity in the world to become the everyday left fielder for the Cardinals. He was the guy in 2021 and absolutely showed out, but hasn’t done anything since then. He didn’t exactly kill it when he got to play in 110 games between 2019 and 2020. He’s injury prone, and the last 2 years when he’s been able to play he’s batted a mediocre .228/.303/.380 slash line in 426 ABs. At some point you might start thinking that the one season was an outlier and that this slightly below average hitter is just who he is.
King of Cards
He was called up in 2018. What do you think happened between 2018 and 2021? He wasn’t hurt all that much back then he sat behind Fowler because Mozeliak had to prove that wasn’t a terrible decision.
King of Cards
His career OPS is 776. Is that a below average hitter? He also has 2 gold gloves.
norcalguardiansfan
And Bieber has a Cy Young. Edman isn’t near enough for Bieber. The Guardians will want a near MLB ready OF, plus a couple very good prospects for him. Edman does us no good.
norcalguardiansfan
Sorry – replied to wrong thread.
CardsFan77
But he won’t be getting a Cy young this year and that’s really all that matters. If we sell the past then I’m selling oniell as a 2 time GG WINNER that was like 4th in MVP voting… see how that works? Here’s the deal.. if the Cards want to trade they are in the driver’s seat. They can send Herrera, oniell and Yepez to Miami for 2 highly touted pitchers (doesn’t hurt them at all) now you need 2 SP spots. They could trade Flaherty for free and have that team take matz salary. Salary dump if you will. Maybe we will kick in a prospect. And if they want to go all out they could trade goldy for a haul. Could also package Burleson, Donavan, deJong, and others like luken baker or Moises Gomez to go get whatever they need. After all that, Edmond can play wherever and they could always call up Winn to man SS. The problem is there is no consistency with this because they have TOO many people trying to play. Not saying these will happen I’m just saying they could do it
norcalguardiansfan
Wow. That was….a lot. I was responding to someone who said that Edelman for Bieber was fair. It is not and if that is who the Cards are offering then there won’t be a deal.
norcalguardiansfan
Edman
nottinghamforest13
That’s not how trades work. This isn’t a videogame.
CardsFan77
In fact, if Miami would pull the trigger, the Cards could probably get Alcantra back. I’m just saying, goldy is a huge piece and if we could cover their catching needs with Herrera and a couple of prospects I’m not sure Miami just hangs up…
CardsFan57
Remove 2021 and O’Neill’s OPS drops dramatically. At this point he’s going to be injury prone the rest of his career. A guy built like a body builder is running around the outfield and develops back problems. That’s the expected outcome.
I was shocked they tried him in center which is even more demanding on the body.
gbs42
Remove a lot of players’ best years and their numbers would drop significantly, especially someone with only a few years in the majors.
CardsFan57
Best year not best years.
gbs42
Players’ is plural, I meant the best single year for a large number of players.
iH8PaperStraws
The cardinals need to stop sitting on their hands and blow it up already. Trade Nootbaar and Donovan already before clubs realize there are just replacement level players. It they won’t and they will hold on to them too long like Carlson. Trade Flaherty because you know he isn’t coming back. Same for Montgomery. If teams are willing to send some high A prospects for Goldschmidt, make the move. Arenado will get mad the team is selling off so send his sour attitude out too. The farm system is empty, trade everyone and try to bring back as many bodies as possible and hopefully hit on a few. Capitalize on your bad record this year and get a top 5 draft prospect in 2024. Will probably be bad in 2024 too so get another top 5 pick. The mediocre teams in a weak division the last several years has kept the cardinals from getting top tier draft picks and team is suffering from it now.it wasn’t that long ago even the Dodger had to reset everything. It’s the Cardinals time now, embrace it rather than screw even that up.
CardsFan57
I agree about trading Goldschmidt and Arenado. They will be wasted the next couple of years. I think they could get some good MLB ready pitchers for them. They would both have to approve any trade so I don’t see them going anywhere but contenders. Philly or AZ makes sense for Goldschmidt and LAD makes sense for Arenado. I know AZ has a good first baseman but their DH is lacking. They might like a reunion with Goldschmidt for a playoff push.
Keep Walker for 3rd. Keep Gorman for 1st. Move Edman back to 2nd. Keep Donovan for utility. I’d also eat a lot of Contreras salary and move him. He’s burned for the Cardinals after what they did to him. I’m sure he’ll approve just about any trade. Move all those spare parts to upgrade the bullpen.
I do think that’s the best way back to contention and have a long window of contention.
Daryl Pauley
I am so very happy you are not in charge of anything. Your scenario scares me, and I’m a guy who likes change.
The only change I see is an investment in the pitching staff and that was apparent two years ago.
I have to wonder if the FO is waiting for Hence, Graceffa, et al before committing to an upgrade in pitching.
DonOsbourne
Why does this scare you? If they had played the entire season so far without Goldy, Arenado, or Contreras, what would their record be? Possibly exactly the same. Possibly a little better because they are better with Knizner than Contreras.
The only reason it would scare me is because after this season the only significant money left on the books would be Mikolas and Matz (possibly DeJong). That would leave Mo with a lot of money to spend and his track record in free agency is ABYSMAL.
CardsFan57
Contreras’ OPS is rapidly approaching the wrong side of .600. Keeping him 5th in the lineup is becoming absurd comedy. It’s just one more example of Marmol being a big part of the problem.
iH8PaperStraws
I think you can get a decent return for Arenado because he’s a few years younger. But I think the best return for Goldschmidt would be a couple A ball arms with high upside. He can’t get you an Andrew Painter or Bobby Miller arm, but may a few 18-19 year old kids with raw stuff. Nothing close to MLB ready coming back for Goldschmidt unless it’s relief arms. But they need to stock up on position players as much as pitchers. The minors are bare. I would trade Donovan before we end up holding him too long like we did Carlson and he looses any value. Same with Nootbaar. Both are cookie cutter average guys, we have no problem finding more of them. At only 6’1” I think Hence is way over hyped, that’s too short to be an ace on today’s game. Trade him while he is still highly thought of. I’d be on bored trading anyone except Gorman if the return is brings back enough players and trading off 2 seasons of bad records for two top 5 draft picks.
iH8PaperStraws
Maybe, the Blue Jays give up on Nate Pearson and would swap him for Goldschmidt. They could use him at DH/1B with Guerrero. Not sure the CRdibals would be interested, but they do like fixer uppers with injury histories too.
diggin4three
Man, several of you guys hit homeruns with this one.. guest678, 57, Don, I’m on board with all of it. I’ve been saying the same to some of my friends for quite awhile, but I didn’t here just to avoid internet BS. But I agree, there are very few players currently on the team I would want to keep, and Goldschmidt and Arenado aren’t on the list. I also agree with what one of the guys said earlier about having Francona. I always wanted him to replace LaRussa, and I really think the organization would’ve done so much better had they went after him.
Daryl Pauley
Dodgers reset, huh. When?
CardsFan57
Not a reset. They could use a bat in the infield now.
iH8PaperStraws
2007 to 2011. The current Dodger reign started in 2012 after the Guggenheim Baseball Management team bought the club. Come on son, know your history.
Spaced-Cowboy
A little salty but I trust your process over whatever the hell they’re doing meow. Great take.
nottinghamforest13
You cannot move players with NTCs unless they want to go somewhere. Goldy and Arenado are not moving.
Garywally57
Oh boy! This blockbuster move should be the start of a 20 game winning streak.
CATS44
The Cards are 15 games below .500 with the worst record in the NL. Even being in a ‘winnable’ division, its hard to see them as buyers at the deadline…which takes Bieber out of the equation.
If they did trade for Bieber, it would be for next year, making him in effect a one year rental. Other teams looking at Bieber would be looking to enhance their chances both this year and next. In other words, Bieber is worth more to other teams than he is to St Louis…and any bidding would reflect that.
Besides, I’m not sure that Bieber is as available as is constantly speculated.
If Cleveland did trade Bieber, they would be rolling the dice on three rookies…all with inning limitations…and three veterans coming of recent injuries, who will also need monitored.
There’s a lot of speculation that Bieber is no longer a top tier starter, but I’m not so sure. If the industry agrees with the public sentiment, it might be better for Cleveland to keep him, and allow him to prove he still belongs among the very best…and then get more for him in the off season than they can now.
King of Cards
I don’t think the Indians need Bieber. They have McKenzie, Allen, Bibee and Williams is pitching great at AAA. He’s barely in their postseason rotation he would really only be in it based on reputation not present day results.
And the Indians need a shortstop. Rosario is playing terribly and he’s a soon to be free agent.
I think it makes sense.
stymeedone
GuarDIANS have plenty of SS prospects and Giminez is a natural SS. They don’t need one, unless they can play OF, also.
King of Cards
Edman can play outfield too….
King of Cards
So if you take out the time he played well he played poorly. Got it
CardsFan57
If you take out his only good season. He’s turning 28 and he’s had one good season.
King of Cards
Arenado is absolutely not going to be dealt. And it’s highly unlikely Goldschmidt is dealt.
The guys that either will or need to be traded are
ONeill
DeJong
Yepez or Baker
Herrera
Montgomery
Flaherty
Hicks
Stratton
Verhagen
CardsFan57
Sorry King of Cards, that’s a bunch of trash. You aren’t getting anything in return for trash.
nottinghamforest13
“Hi, I have a bunch of players who aren’t performing. Please send me something of value to rebuild my system with and you can insert this unproductive player into your lineup that is competing for a division title.”
Get real, dude.
King of Cards
Some of those guys are performing. Herrera is crushing the ball at AAA. Montgomery is a decent 3 or 4 starter
Hicks throws 100 still.
Some aren’t that valuable. But yes most have value except possibly DeJong because of his contract
nottinghamforest13
If you’re rebuilding, why trade Herrera?
A “decent three or four” starter will yield something, but probably nothing too exciting.
Hicks throws 100, but has a track record of injuries and inconsistent performance. He’ll yield something, but nothing of major significance.
You have pieces here that can be traded and perhaps should be traded, but there’s no major prize waiting to bring back a haul of goods.
Daryl Pauley
If we sell any of those guys the only ones who get us anything of value are Montgomery, Flaherty, and Herrera. Herrera and O’Neill might get us a Miami pitcher. Flaherty+ might get us Bieber. Montgomery gets us a couple of young promising A pitcher’s.
Chances are we keep most of those because of reasons, MO’s reasons. FO doesn’t want to appear to be in sell-off mode.
realbaseball
Why has the child wunderkind prepubescent marmol not been fired?
Daryl Pauley
Because you don’t fire somebody for 8 weeks of bad baseball.
Fans panic quickly, the FO strategizes.
CardsFan57
It’s not just the bad baseball. It’s horrible management. The Contreras debacle alone should have gotten someone fired. Continuing to bat Contreras 5th while he’s in a horrible slump is another example of bad management. How many games has that cost the team? Who do you blame when almost everyone is playing below expectations?
FrontOfficeStan
I die a little inside every time I see someone say we should trade Herrera.
nottinghamforest13
It’s absurd.
“We need to tear everything down and build for the future. Let’s start by trading our future catcher – arguably the most difficult position to fill with a productive player.”
