The Braves will reinstate left-hander Kolby Allard from the 60-day injured list to start tomorrow’s game against the Twins, the team informed reporters (including Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution). It’ll be his season debut.
Allard, a former first-round draftee, made his first three major league appearances with Atlanta in 2018. The Braves dealt him to the Rangers the following season. He spent four years in Texas but never posted an ERA below 4.96. At the start of last offseason, the Rangers traded him back to the Braves for Jake Odorizzi.
So far, neither team has gotten anything out of the swap. Odorizzi might not throw a pitch as a Ranger. He underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery in April and will miss the entire season; he’s headed to free agency at year’s end. Allard has been down since suffering a Grade 2 oblique strain in Spring Training.
The southpaw has made just two rehab starts for Triple-A Gwinnett. He has combined for 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball with eight strikeouts. Allard tossed 62 pitches in his most recent outing on Thursday, so it’ll likely be a relatively brief start. The Braves optioned AJ Smith-Shawver yesterday, leaving a vacancy in the fifth rotation spot behind Spencer Strider, Bryce Elder, Charlie Morton and Jared Shuster.
Allard will reoccupy a spot on the 40-man roster. Atlanta already has a vacancy after designating Charlie Culberson for assignment last week. They’ll only need to make a corresponding active roster transaction tomorrow.

Happy for Kolby. It’s been a long road.

Crazy that he’s still only 25.

Do they hate Mike Soroka or something? How do you have 20 year Olds and washed prospects start over him? If they won’t play him, trade him for some upgrades
Benjamin101677
They thought that a left handed would be a better match against the Twins. I like the idea of seeing what you have with Allard before the trade deadline.
Although Soroka looks good last few starters think the Braves want to be over confident that he is ready when the bring him as when / if he comes back the Braves want to keep him up.
Sounds like this is a just a spot start for Allard. Soroka next appearance in majors will be big news again and if he get sent out again next day won’t look good.
Smacky
Because they don’t have to win every game anymore. It’s going to be 91° w/ 86% humidity and a UV Index of 12 which is considered extreme. There’s zero reason to toss Soroka into that scenario. Allard is up to take the bullet here. That’s fine baseball is a business.

Considering it’s gonna be hotter on Friday and Saturday has a high of 98 I don’t think it’s really like that. It’s Georgia man. It’s hot as hel in summer and just cold enough in winter to make it uncomfortable. In fall and spring there’s no better place to be tho. It’s the first real hot stretch of the summer. Literally the UV is like that every day in summer here

Thank you Rishi for that weather report, and now to Sports…
Rishi
Tell the guy above me, not me. And you’re welcome of course
Rishi
I obviously didn’t get it at first Fullmontilla. I actually almost said something like that at the end of the original post
YaySports
Because despite fans thinking Soroka is ready every time he has a good game he’s thrown about 100 innings the last 3-4 seasons between injury and COVID. Kid needs time to regain his command or his next major league start is going to go a lot like his last one.

I was curious about the move as well. I think that they are just trying to get him as routine based as possible for him to make a run and in the back half of the season.
I’d also be curious as to what is innings limits are. Up to this point he’s over 63 innings between MLB and AAA.

This aged well Admiral.

Seems kinda dumb that they basically paid 10mil for him which seems to show they value his potential but are calling him up to start after only 2 rehab appearances. Just have a bullpen game. The next day is an off day. Then again it’s a great opportunity to have been injured all that time and think you’re last in the depth chart and then you get called up while your not even done rehabbing really. So IDK.
DCartrow
Watch him go 7 and give up 3 hits.
Rishi
He was really good. Had to be on a pitch limit. 71 pitches 8ks. You were right about the 3 hits so I’m gonna reward a gold star

Interesting to see what Allard has today.

Relax, Braves fans. Everything they’ve done this year is sprinkled with magical pixie dust. They let a solid SS and clubhouse guy (Swanson) walk and rolled the dice with Orlando Arcia. Arcia is producing better numbers than Swanson for a fraction of the cost.
The starting rotation took a hit, but Elder, Shuster, and now, maybe Allard, are filling in admirably.
Rosario got off to a slow start,, and Ozuna was persona non gratis. Bam! More pixie dust doing its thing.
So if the latest decision is to call up Allard and bypass Soroka, at least for now, I’m not gonna argue. The weather isn’t the only thing that’s hot in Atlanta. The suits in the executive offices might be hotter.
The NL East already belongs to the Braves. My Phillies, along with the NY Mess (Not a typo!), two big money teams who were supposed to challenge the Braves, are far behind. Nice to see the Marlins getting some love, but, hey, you know they ain’t gonna wrest first place away from the Braves.
Heading into the season, I really questioned if the Braves could endure losing two solid players (Freddie and Dansby) in back-to-back off seasons and not suffer some kind of a let down. Sadly, (Remember I’m a Phillies fan,) it hasn’t happened. Kudos to the Chop House.

Don’t forget AJSS. He filled in really well and I think the Braves are just bringing him along slowly or he would still be in the rotation. His numbers for such a young rookie were better than typical. He just got a taste similar to what Elder did last year.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Ivan Rodriguez’s son Dereck got sent down to make room for Allard.

9-23 with a 6.07 ERA? I’m excited

4 and 2/3rds innings of scoreless ball with 8 K’s. Not too shabby.
