Over the first 824 games of his Major League career, Tim Anderson had almost exclusively as a shortstop, with a couple of DH days thrown into the mix. However, Anderson has now made two consecutive starts at second base, as a way of getting the veteran into the White Sox lineup despite some lingering soreness in his right throwing shoulder. Sox manager Pedro Grifol told MLB.com’s Scott Merkin and other reporters that “all intentions are for [Anderson] to go back to shortstop” eventually, and that the club was monitoring Anderson’s shoulder on a day-to-day basis.
Considering Chicago’s 33-45 record, it can’t be ignored that Anderson’s temporary move to the keystone could also serve as a showcase for any interested trade partners. As per most public defensive metrics, Anderson has had subpar glovework as a shortstop over the last two seasons, and a move to second base might eventually be required as Anderson (who turned 30 years old two days ago) gets deeper into his career. A team doubtful of Anderson’s shortstop defense could be more keen on using him as a second baseman, or an ability to shuttle between both positions might also boost the former All-Star’ trade value given how clubs prize versatile players. That said, offense is a bigger concern than defense for Anderson at this point, since he has struggled to a .241/.279/.282 slash line over 229 plate appearances while missing about three weeks on the injured list with a left knee sprain. 2023 is the final guaranteed year of Anderson’s contract, as the White Sox hold a $14MM club option on his services for 2024.
More from around the AL Central….
- Byron Buxton left yesterday’s game due to back spasms, which arose while he was trying to beat out a grounder to first base. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told MLB.com’s Do-Hyoung Park and other reporters that Buxton has been bothered by the back problem for much of the season, and that he is day-to-day pending further evaluation though Buxton seemed “to already be feeling a little bit better” following the game. Buxton has been used exclusively as a DH this season, with the nagging back issues adding to the surgically-repaired right knee that is still causing Buxton issues, and keeping him out of his usual center field position.
- Eduardo Rodriguez threw 50 pitches during a live bullpen session on Saturday, and afterwards told reporters (including Chris McCosky of the Detroit News) that “everything was perfect — feeling-wise, body-wise, shoulder-wise, finger-wise.” Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day IL just over a month ago with a pulley rupture in his left index finger, and the unusual nature of the injury made it somewhat difficult to establish a true timeline for his return. However, McCosky notes that it certainly looks like Rodriguez might be on pace to return to the Tigers rotation prior to the All-Star break, though manager A.J. Hinch said the left-hander will have to make at least one rehab start before being activated from the IL. Rodriguez has an outstanding 2.13 ERA over 67 2/3 innings for Detroit this season, making him both an important piece for a Tigers team still in the AL Central race, or potentially as a deadline trade chip if the Tigers pivot into seller mode.
- In other Tigers news, Matt Manning is expected to be activated from the 60-day IL during Detroit’s upcoming series against the Rangers. Hinch told reporters (including The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen) that the club hasn’t yet decided if Manning will be activated to start on Tuesday or Thursday, as the Tigers are also factoring in whether or not to give Reese Olson an extra day of rest. Manning has been sidelined since his second start of the season, when he suffered a right foot fracture after being hit by an Alejandro Kirk comebacker to the mound.
Most players today will be in wheelchairs by the time they are 45.
Only if they are still being paid on their long term contract!
If you’re looking for a shortstop, that kinda sends up a red flag if you can’t throw! I know Dodgers were interested but I would definitely be backing off after that news!
See Trevor Story. TA’s days at SS are maybe over but I don’t blame the WS for showcasing him at 2B for a possible deadline trade.
Anderson’s defense is atrocious no matter where he plays. Balls are going off his glove and hitting him on the chest. I wanted the Sox to keep him, but now I don’t care if he goes because he just doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about the team and his play reflects that. I would like to ask him why he wants to leave, which he allegedly told Jose Abreu last season, but I already know. It’s because Reinsdorf doesn’t care. But the fans do. If Anderson leaves I hope he goes to a contender who can turn him back into the player he used to be. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the Sox aren’t going to reach .500 for years to come. However bad the team will be, at least I have 2005 to look back on. I knew then it would never happen again.
If Anderson doesn’t care because as you say the owner doesn’t care then that is a horrible reflection on Tim Anderson.
Anderson slashing .236/.275/.277/.552.
Nearing the point of being unplayable.
Tigers getting some reinforcements. Now we just need to trade off some pitching surplus to get some hitting and we might be in business.
There is no such thing as pitching surplus, who will be next in line for TJ? I can see Tigers trading ERod, hopefully he gets back into games to increase his trade value.
Erod, Lorenzen and some bullpen pieces will likely be shipped out at the deadline. We need to get back some good young hitters in the high minors or stuck behind others for them, like Harris did when he traded Jimenez for Henry-Malloy and Soto for Vierling and Maton (yes I know Maton is hitting.160 but he has also a wicked 14.3% walk rate). There will be so few true sellers and SO many buyers at the deadline that I think we can really get ourselves some good offensive pieces for the future.
Maton just made another error to let Minnesota tie the game, he isn’t ready for the big leagues.
Buxton injury.. never would have guessed
Might be time for the Twins to swing a trade for a center field bat and just let Buxton rest for a stretch run.
Buxton injured? I’m shocked. Shocked I tell you! Ok maybe not that shocked… The whole the player makes this team better would be an overstatement when it comes to Byron. He can’t stay off the IL. At this point I would just turn him into a bench player.
That’s the next step because he was moved to the less physically demanding DH which apparently turned out to be too physically demanding. They could always put his hologram in the lineup and CF, but contact would be an issue. I can see the MLBTR post now: Twins Place Byron Buxton’s Hologram on IL Due to Glitch in Knee
Buxton is a professional baseball player. They get hurt more than all other human beings on earth combined.
TA will have his option picked up and play out the string for the White Sox until the 2024 trade deadline. A desperate GM is a dangerous thing.
If they pick up his option will we have another season of him not even close to .300 where he usually is and terrible defense? We don’t need that.
We? Or you? You only speak for yourself unless you’re referring to you and your stuffed animals
He claims that he’s the best player on the team.
Recall at the start of the season when asked about his critics, Anderson said he was strong and was just gonna go out and let his play speak for itself.
He’s definitely done that…
What you’re missing is what the White Sox record is when Anderson is in the lineup. When you see that, every team could use a player of his value… so the narrative goes. (Roll eyes)
Hey!! Second base is where Jackie played!!
It’s fate.
Anderson is clearly injured as his offense has collapsed too. Is this all shoulder related? Trade return will be minimal. Might want to see if he can get better in the offseason.
You’re right, but the injury happened a long time ago… It’s the “me” gene. Listen to his interviews… He’s the most important person he knows.
100% this. He’s a selfish player and pouts when he doesn’t get his way. He’s a clubhouse cancer. Cut the losses and move on. This team is going nowhere anyway.
Bet on Tim having a monster second half, if he doesn’t have a Wander Franco moment…
TA won’t have a monster second half because he has an attitude problem. He has the talent, he just doesn’t want to show it as a member of the WS.
I know the Royals suck, but they’re still in the AL Central.
I heard they dropped out of the Central and started the Great Plains Division where they’re the odds-on favorites to win that one-team division.
Tim Anderson’s issues as a baseball player are stemming from his off the field issues. Currently, Anderson has marriage issues due to fathering a child out of wedlock. Meanwhile, Anderson is looking for his next big contract since he probably knows his wife is going to divorce him and take half of what he is going to make on his new contract with whatever team takes a chance on him.
Sometimes players have to take a hit before they can right themselves. If he gets traded, his agent should call him and tell him his career is on the fence. With a good 1.5 years, he can still get a good 4 or 5 year contract. If his option doesn’t get picked up, he will never again get the big money.
As a Dodger fan , I WAS all in on Anderson but after reading some of these comments I wouldn’t trade for him if all we gave up was a box of Cracker Jack and a used pine tar rag!
I got your box of Jack, cracker.
Terry B: It’s too bad they don’t show on programs like Quick Pitch TA’s screw-ups. But if he goes to the Dodgers, I hear they’ve got a fantastic hitting coach who can help him find his way back to being a .300 hitter. Whoever this coach is, he did wonders for J.D. Martinez.
Yeah, that will make up for the massive amount of runs given up by his holey glove.
TA getting traded to the Yankees to play with his friend Donaldson.
The RS have to at least consider it, Mayer is at least one year away. I never thought he was as good as he thinks he is, but he has to be better than what he’s showing. And the WS are signaling panic-mode right now.
The first player they need to trade is Lance Lynn. Not having a banner year, but there are enough teams desperate for pitching that they could get something decent in return. Gotta do it while he’s healthy. Sooner the better. Then they can do whatever they want with Anderson.
JoeBrady: The problem is, the WS are NOT in panic-mode. Where they are now is fine with Reinsdorf who refuses to put any money into the team.
The white Sox have $184MM on their payroll.
Spending is not the issue. Player development is their problem.
Yeah their ‘coaching staff’ look like the keystone cops.. Their ‘health and conditioning’ staff should be coming out in a clown car.
In terms of injuries only, not who’s a d-bag who steals his big contract salary…
Bigger brittle prone player:
A. Anthony Rendon
B. Byron Buxton
C. Josh Donaldson
Who’s your can’t count on player?
Scott – I’d include Bader and Duvall also.
Did you miss “big contract”..?
Mccourt – Yes I did, my bad.
Detroit- Maton sent to Toledo, for Manning to be reinstated…
I’d settle for “Maton sent to Toledo.” The team is instantly better by subtraction even if no one replaced him (yes, I know you have to have 26).
So I was at dream scape nails in Bridgeport waiting to get my pedicure. Yes you heard that right getting my toes done. So as I’m in the chair deciding on what to eat, Tim Anderson himself came in for a mani and pedi. He tried to stay low profile but I recognized him right away wearing a bud light tee shirt. I’m not a fan so I didn’t bother to strike up a conversation. I was wearing my Bert Roberge 1984 whitesox jersey so Tim knew I was a fan . By the way I decided on Chinese and ordered from happiness on halsted. . Orange chicken all the way !
Thanks again For another delightful toe-test into your special stream of consciousness, Pharms!
The Orange Chicken from Happiness is definitely a go to when you eat there!
If I were the Twins I would have traded Buxton if a half decent offer was received. I will die on the hill that he’s maybe the most overrrated player in the league right now. Teams get burnt on these guys who show big potential in small spurts but are inconsistent and injury prone. He has little to no value as a DH who barely gets on base and gets hurt if he runs.
Detroit will get Rodriguez going and then trade him to a contender
at the Trade deadline for some young bats.
Manning and Skubal will be coming back.
Not sure when Mise will be back.
Al Avila gets a lot of criticism for his tenure as Detroit’s GM.
And, I think some of it was well warranted.
Don’t look now, but many of Al Avila’s draft picks and guys he traded for are now producing very well. Reese Olson? Jake Rogers ? Green? Torkelson? Joey Wentz?.
Madden, Brieske? Faedo? Badoo?
Jemeir Candelario is producing for the Nats.
Double A Erie is in the playoffs for 2nd straight year.
Wilmer Flores, Ty Madden, Dillon Dingle, Campos, Colt Keith, Jackson Jobe and many more.
One of the services has Detroit’s farm rated as high as 10th
even after all the other young players were promoted to Detroit.
If they can get healthy and keep drafting and trading well,, then that team could be a legitimate contender in ’25? or ’26?
contender in ’24 or ’25.
Good job Avila and Harris in building depth.
Sometimes rebuilds can be slower than fans would like.
But, it looks light the lights at the end of the tunnel are in view
Tigers could be the next Pittsburgh or Cincy
with a surprise breakout.
Mostly agree. Avila and The Tigers got screwed with a ton of injuries that blunted the team’s progress, in ’22 which was out of his control. Wish he would have drafted a few more decent hitters, tho. I’m thinking Torkelson is never gonna be that good (hope he proves me wrong next year).
Avila did some things good and some things bad. His drafting was fine. His trades were fine. His signing of FAs was terrible, especially pitching. He should have been given one more year, after all the injuries. He wouldn’t have given up on this team before the season started, like Harris did. This division was there for the taking this year. Even if it was just for what he could bring back at the deadline, I’m pretty sure Candelario would have been kept. Tigers pretty much have the worst production out of 3B.
Couldn’t disagree more. Al hasn’t provided enough bats through the draft, FA signings or trades. This team is still at least 2 years away from being decent, IF Scott can acquire the right talent.
Like most if you I think Avila was good at recognizing young talent and his drafts were not too bad. He had some decent trades and some real crappy ones but few wins in FA signings. I don’t blame Harris for writing a year to see what he has and what he needs. I don’t care if he dies things lije thry donin SF and adds through waivers wire finds (think Thairo Estrada in SF), small trade pickups for complimentary pieces or smart free agent signings. If we get a competitive team out of it in two years we’ll all be pretty happy. Al left some pretty good building blocks for him to start with (Greene, Tork, Skubal et al…).
Some of Avila’s moves I disagreed with like picking Jackson Jobe instead of top rated SS Jackson Lawler and always drafting pitching, including lottery ticket high school pitchers ahead of established hitters with a clearer path to the majors.
Sox waited to long on pulling the plug on TA . All media hype was a replacement all star for an injured Correa. Now 30 bad shoulder is as bad as a bad ankle save the 12 mil and move on. He would have been an all star outfielder like Robin Yount who made the switch from SS to outfielder who made the Hall of Fame no hype just the fact Jack.
