The White Sox announced this afternoon that veteran reliever Alex Colomé has gone unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier in the week. He’s been sent outright to Triple-A Charlotte, though he’ll have the right to decline that assignment and elect minor league free agency.
Colomé’s second stint with the White Sox proved brief. He signed a minor league deal in April and was selected onto the major league roster during the first week of May. He came out of the bullpen four times, surrendering four runs (two earned) in three innings. Colomé walked three and only picked up two strikeouts before being DFA.
That brief look marked the 11th consecutive season in which Colomé reached the highest level. The right-hander pitched 47 frames for the Rockies last season, allowing a career-worst 5.74 ERA with a modest 14.9% strikeout rate. Before last season, Colomé had consistently overcome middling strikeout numbers to keep runs off the board at a quality clip, largely on the strength of strong ground-ball numbers.
The 34-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Nationals over the winter. He spent Spring Training with Washington and was granted his release after being informed he wouldn’t break camp. He’d logged eight innings for Charlotte after signing with Chicago prior to his call-up. He allowed three runs with seven strikeouts and four free passes. He’ll now decide whether to head back to Charlotte or to explore other opportunities (likely of the minor league variety) in free agency.

The Sox gave him a shot, but they made the right decision in letting him go. He had two good seasons with them. I was surprised when they let him go because he rarely blew a save without a 100 mph fastball. But they preferred Hendriks who does throw 98 mph fastballs. I like Hendriks, but what was wrong with Colome?

Chisox should start the rebuild. For different reasons, Grandal and Giolito will not be with their team next year. The Sox will need a catcher.
I really hate to help them out by suggesting this, but Hahn should offer the Cardinals both Grandal and Giolito, for Willie Contreras.
Cards need pitching this year and they’d be getting rid of a distraction for the team, along with saving money – and the White Sox would have a solid catcher and someone who plays hard – for the next 4 years.

White Sox and Dodgers make too much sense matching up on some sort of trade.. they have multiple young catcher prospects they could trade for some big names players. Hitting And pitching . Dodgers could use a SP to replace Thor and RHRP for the pen..TA comes to mind for hitting but He’s stinking it up right now but he has a better hitting future than Rojas does.

Tim Anderson isn’t a Dodger type player. His defense is poor and he’s a bit divisive. The Dodgers are looking very good for next season with a young C Diego Cartaya and OF Andy Pages coming on strong.
It doesn’t matter who the Cardinals acquire with the Manager they have.

I agree the White Sox should start their rebuild now and trade Giolito and Grandal. As for a trade with the Cardinals, the White Sox would be better off to center their attention on one of the Cardinals middle infielders. The Cardinals currently have too many middle infielders and not enough places for all of them to get adequate playing time, plus at some point Masyn Winn should be ready to take over everyday at shortstop. The White Sox meanwhile, appear to be in a desperate condition to need an upgrade in the middle infield. As far as Contreras, the White Sox would be taking on his 5 year contract, and that is something rebuilding teams don’t normally do. As far as Contreras being a distraction for the Cardinals, several players have come out to voice their support for him. According to local Saint Louis sports talk radio, the players enjoy Contreras in the clubhouse and love his high energy. Several sports talk radio hosts have commented their opinion that Contreras has become one of their favorite players for the way he has handled the situation of being moved to the DH role. Most Cardinals fans don’t blame Contreras for the bad start to the season, and instead blame management and the poor performance of the starting pitchers.

The Sox should never have signed Grandal to begin with. They got him because he was a good framer of the ball. Big deal. He’s just a horrible catcher. The Cards should have never have signed Contreras. He was totally over rated. Hitting in a major league ball park like Busch stadium is different than in a band box like Wrigley. cub fans I know we’re never too high on his defense, either. The Sox should keep Giolito but they won’t because he’d like to get paid. The Sox totally blew their last rebuild and, even though their strategy seems to be to fill the lineup with minor leaguers, they won’t be able to avoid the inevitable. They have far too many holes to fill to go on this way.

Outright Hahn and Williams.

The club won’t really change until there’s new ownership. If JR is still in charge, it’ll be the same lack of accountability and occasional meddling, always to the team’s detriment. The whole FO needs to go.

I was mad last season when my Rockies failed to get anything for Colome at the deadline, not even salary relief. In retrospect that wasn’t such a bad non-move because he pitched so poorly the last couple of months that he probably helped the Rockies get a better draft position.
I guess this DFA is a sign that the WS are not trying to tank.

They’re not trying very hard to win, either.

The Rebuild needs to start with the FRONT OFFCE

Hot off the presses! Just ran into Jerry at Pete’s market in Pilsen . Word is that Big Ben Davis is coming out of retirement to offer his skills at catcher. You heard it here first

Definitely a problem with ownership and management but there has to be something more. The Sox are not a championship contending team but they shouldn’t be playing this bad. Not sure what the problem is but I don’t believe it’s just a lousy catcher and a few injuries. The pitching and hitting should be good enough to at least have them around .500 but that’s difficult to do when they only show up every few games.

Colome is not the only issue, him being brought back shows how desperate Hahn is to try to save his own skin.. Like most in JR owned orgs.. No one is trying to win, just trying to save face to keep their jobs.
The problem with the Sox is you also have a bunch of unmotivated players in the ‘core’ who obviously do not take their position seriously. Lack of heart, the same issue this club has had for the past three seasons. Players playing to their capabilities.. when they want.. Players getting silly injuries all of the time (which coincidentally happens most often with their core guys that were extended a few years ago) and obviously not putting in the time to work with nutritionists and conditioning staff to ensure they are ready every season (like I would trust the clown dept that is the Sox conditioning staff). Never mind the orgs typical mantra of getting top tier players when they are past their prime by a few years and finally obvious misfires in FA acquisitions by Hahn (which is he well known for).
avenger65
Well said. FA acquisitions by Hahn? The only “FA” he signed are has-beens and talent-less guys that other teams don’t want. Cheap, uncaring owner, no farm system and a GM whose hands are tied by Jr doesn’t exactly scream a winner.
