Dodgers lefty Julio Urias was expected to throw a bullpen session off the mound for the first time since going on the injured list with a hamstring strain last week, but the 26-year-old lefty felt some soreness after working out yesterday and threw off flat ground instead, as noted by The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. Ardaya notes that the planned bullpen session has been moved to Tuesday, and that the next step afterwards would be to face live hitters.
Urias’s setback opens the door for young right-hander Bobby Miller to make another start after the 24-year-old top prospect threw five innings of one-run ball against a tough Braves lineup in his MLB debut earlier this week. With Miller looking effective, there’s plenty of reason for the Dodgers to proceed cautiously with their staff ace as he works his way back from his current hamstring ailment. Urias entered the 2023 campaign with a career ERA of just 2.82 (148 ERA+), but his platform season before he’s slated to test free agency in the offseason hasn’t gotten off on the same dominant foot as usual. Through ten starts this season, Urias has posted a surprisingly pedestrian 4.39 ERA (101 ERA+) with a worrisome 5.31 FIP. That season line is weighed down by a final brutal stretch of six starts immediately preceding Urias’s placement on the IL, where he posted a 6.25 ERA and 6.86 FIP in 31 2/3 innings of work.
More from around MLB’s West divisions…
- Rangers ace Jacob deGrom has been on the injured list with elbow inflammation for a month now, as the club has taken their oft-injured ace’s ramp-up back to game action slowly. After throwing a 25-pitch, fastball-only bullpen session last week, deGrom progressed to a 31-pitch bullpen session yesterday per MLB.com, during which he began to mix in sliders and change-ups. Manager Bruce Bochy noted that deGrom will be evaluated over the coming days as he recovers from the session while the club attempts to establish a clearer timeline for his return. As arguably the best pitcher in the world when healthy it’s hard to overstate the value deGrom, who has posted a 2.67 ERA and 1.57 FIP in his first six starts as a member of the Rangers, has for the club. Nonetheless, Texas has been able to excel even without their ace thanks to excellent performances from Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, and Martin Perez.
- Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is out of the lineup today while the 30-year-old star deals with discomfort in his wrist. As noted by Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the issue is in the same wrist that required a cortisone shot during spring training. Acee notes that it’s still too soon for Bogaerts to receive another shot, so the shortstop has opted to instead play through the discomfort on and off throughout the season. The discomfort could help to explain Bogaerts’s struggles this past month, as he has slashed just .195/.290/.268 in 21 games so far in May. Acee notes that the hope is that Bogaerts will be able to return to the lineup tomorrow, but the situation appears to be day-to-day.
deGrom, Verlander, Scherzer. Over a billion dollars worth of talent and none of them have been on the mound long enough to earn it. The Rangers pitching staff has done a good job, but when your offense consistently scores 10+ runs per game, they don’t have to be great.
Rangers are a solid team, but bats always get cold in stretches. That’s when deGrom’s health will be key.
Texas’s secret weapon is Bruce Bochy.
If anyone can hide weak pitchers or mix and match them to get them right… it’s Boch.
I watched him a lot in SD. Best skipper I’ve seen in 50 years of baseball watching…imho.
951–975 was his record in SD. Sounds pretty mediocre to me, also 8-16 in post season under him in SD.
He and Connie Mack had sub .500 records for the same reason. Economics. Not game management.
I agree with your screen name though.
Unless Urias went to your tram…then you’d think he was wonderful.
Yes, like you wouldn’t take Urias on your team’s staff….
No. I wouldn’t. Except maybe for a one-year rebound/pillow deal.
Dumb.
And Dumber.
Padres were the A’s of that era. They were often the lowest payroll in baseball.
Perpetual fire sale.
Even after their pennant in 1998.
Once Tony Gwynn retired, I gave up my season tickets. No reason to go to the park.
Well, Connie Mack was his own worst enemy, while Bochy’s padres tenure doesn’t ring genius to me… I think his SF Tenure more then earned him a trip to cooperstown and possibly a nickname like ‘Genius’, but seriously, 8-16 in the post season with some of those great rosters? Anyways wasn’t knocking the guy or your opinion, just thought Genius was a bit hyperbolic 🙂
We’ll have to agree to disagree.
I was a Padres season ticket guy, from 1996-02. Bochy was a genius then. And on SF. And now with Texas.
Imho, the best I’ve seen.
And Connie Mack had huge financial problems in Philly. But as a talent evaluator and in game skipper he was brilliant.
Again, imho.
Scherzer and Verlander are starting to pitch better. Scherzer is 3-0 in his last three starts with 18 innings, 1.00 ERA, and 19 Ks.
Rockies didn’t get the memo tonight, unfortunately. =[
X-Bo ailing is a big Padres problem. With underperforming teammates, they’re doomed.
Crikes – I knew his wrist was hurting, but didn’t want to say anything and tip off his opponents. He went through the same thing with the Sox, nothing new.
Urias’ walk year… limp year.
“As arguably the best pitcher in the world when healthy…”
Yeah. And I’d arguably be young if I wasn’t so old.
Agreed! You can’t be the most valuable when you don’t play.
Since the beginning of his career in 2014, only Kershaw has had a lower ERA and FIP. From 2020-2022 deGrom had the lowest ERA, FIP, and best K% and BB% among starters, but he only had 38 starts and 224 IP. Starters like Burnes had nearly double that.
your almost right verlander had a lower era between 2020 and 2022 and also added cy young in that span too.
Bobby Miller should get a lot more than 1 start. Gavin Stone doesn’t look ready and Noah Syndergaard is the worst Dodgers SP in 20 years
Miller will get another start, mostly because the Dodgers have no choice but to give him one. I wouldn’t project much off of a few innings of work. As much as they have to use him they will take it start to start. Not that Syndergaard hasn’t been lousy, but I bet he has some serious competition in that department going back that many years.
Remember when Billingsly was the Dodgers’ ace less than 20 years ago? Probably more like 15 or so… I bet there were way way worse guys on the staff. He is just unlucky. Consider all the trashy guys the Dodgers have turned to aces with their pitching magic.
Angels are finding out that, predictably, 2022 was one brief, shining moment in the career of Tyler Anderson that was Camelot. He’s turned back into a pumpkin, and there’s still 2.5+ years left on that contract.
To be fair, Anderson did have many great years at Coors Field in terms of relative run prevention. His numbers just weren’t as good as those from 2022 since he pitched in a much friendlier ballpark and in a low offense year.
Take the money and run Choo Choo take the money and run
They need to send Billy Bronxmac, that detective down in Texas after him.
Billy Bronxmac is winded…
Because they’re still running today.
Did the X-man sprain that wrist signing that über-deal? Only 19 or so more years to go…
):^0
REACT TO ME!!!!!
):^O
Handicap this race to the training room;
DeGrom
Paxton
Stanton
Who would be left standing(pun intended)?
Well, Stanton wouldn’t run, so if the others jog, it’s a lock for one of them.
“Nonetheless, Texas has been able to excel even without their ace thanks to excellent performances from Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, and Martin Perez.”
Don’t forget deGrom’s replacement, Dane Dunning. In 4 starts, 2-0, 1.59 ERA.
Due to his change in attitude.
As soon as he was done deigning, Dane Dunning got better.
Off-season arthroscopic hip surgery probably helped more. This is the first time I have ever heard of any attitude problems with Dunning. Do you have a source?
Inverted play on his name only.
He ain’t haughty or naughty to my knowledge.
Xander looks lost at the plate and making poor errors in the field.
Who would have thought Odor would be the spark over the last couple of series. He’s made some great plays at 3rd and hit the long ball a few times.
Jr. Is hitting well again and looking decent at right, even with a couple of errors. Same thing with Soto.
Sullivan is looking solid behind the dish but can’t hit. The same thing with Dixon, he looks great at 1st but outside of the one dinger he hasn’t produced much.
Kidchado Kim, is gold glove type performance anywhere you put him but couldn’t hit a fastball if it was a bar door.
Jake from Rake Farm is a solid defender but is beyond struggling at bat, same thing with Big Bootie Grish. Nola needs to go, Sullivan and Campy when he gets back are ready to take on the role.
Pitching wise Darvish, Musgrove, lugo, Wacha and look solid. My man Snell needs to go, I love the guy, but he needs to go.
The pen is outstanding, don’t touch a thing.
I have no idea what the heck is up with Manny. He looks completely lost at the plate. Defensively he as solid as ever, at the plate he is just not the same.
Trade deadline package: Snell/Nola/? For Corbin Burns
Bogarts had terrible away stats. He should of stuck it with Boston. His D is premium but that bat isn’t worth the funds he’s gotten
