The Tigers are selecting newly-acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick onto the major league roster, manager A.J. Hinch informed reporters (including Evan Woodbery of MLive). Detroit will announce corresponding moves tomorrow. The 40-man roster is at capacity, so they’ll either have to designate someone for assignment or place someone on the 60-day injured list.
Detroit’s primary center fielder, Riley Greene, left tonight’s loss to the Rangers due to left leg discomfort. Hinch stressed that the decision to call-up Marisnick is independent of Greene’s situation — the team presumably planned to promote him from the moment they landed him from the White Sox this afternoon — but it could prove a fortuitously timed pickup if Greene requires an injured list stint.
Marisnick adds a glove-first veteran to the Detroit outfield mix. He’s appeared in parts of 11 big league campaigns, including a nine-game showing for the ChiSox earlier this season. Marisnick is a career .228/.281/.384 hitter. He’s thrice reached double digits in home runs but consistently posts worse than average strikeout and walk rates.
The biggest appeal is in his defensive acumen. Marisnick has drawn strong reviews from public metrics like Defensive Runs Saved and Statcast’s Outs Above Average for his center field work. His marks have predictably dipped from peak levels as he’s gotten into his 30s but he’ll still offer some stability with the glove off the bench.
Greene has started 49 of the 53 games in center field. The former fifth overall pick has been Detroit’s most productive position player, carrying a .296/.362/.443 line with five home runs. Matt Vierling landed on the injured list today, leaving Marisnick and Akil Baddoo as the top options for center field work if Greene requires some time off.
Stockpiling centerfielders is good business. Even guys as underwhelming as Marisnick.
Another high OPS guy, how does Harris pull these robberies off like he does? SMFH, maybe he’ll DFA Scope or send Maton to AAA, but doubtful you’ll notice any difference
He has a .664 career OPS. That is by no means high.
He was being sarcastic.
Maton needed to be demoted a month ago & if Carpenter hadn’t gotten hurt, he might have been demoted. Maton needs a new batting stance & approach which he can’t do up in the big leagues. Send him down & revamp the entire approach
Jonathan Schoop is beginning to hit.
Oh no, we suck again!
Ugggh. What a crappy day for Tigers news!
No bad days……
10 years in the MLB with no ABs more.than 400?
Looks weird.
No stats that jump out at you.
Looks weird.
Is.the GM doing someone a favor? Or have alt motives?
Looks weird.
Hope he does well!
Congratulations!
Only broke 300 ABs ,once……1/3 s.o. rate, w/o the power.
looks weird.
Are we trading an outfielder? Badoo?
Tis the life of a speedy, defense-first, CF-capable 4th outfielder.
But Hinch knew Marisnick when he managed the Astros so it’s a known commodity that I assume Hinch had a hand in wanting to put in the claim.
Is it really such a risk to call up Parker Meadows and see if he can beat a .228/.281/.384 line? He’s beating all of those numbers at AAA. Is giving ABs to Marsnick really going to make the tigers better going forward? This is a bad move by Harris, regardless of what Marsnick does.
Meadows isn’t ready.
Predicting Ty Nevin goes back to Toledo after his 1-game stint tonight
Hoping!
Another castaway domes to town. He’s a known commodity to the manager, so that should help right away. No one can dispute what were seeing before our eyes with the team. They are playing better than we’ve seen for quite sometime.
I know after watching Jake Rodgers in 2019, the year of the flying baseballs that with his little power that he would be leading the team in home runs today for Detroit. So they have stunned this city with it’s play this year.
Whats really nice for the fans is not having to pull up the farm data to wonder who can come up next. The Tigers can only get better. Their number of stranded runners is huge, one day soon they’ll start to plate them. They are fun to watch, and starting to fill up seats in the stadium as well.
Let’s hope they DFA Schoop. He’s been horrible for 2 years.
He’s starting to hit some, it might be enough to keep him around a while longer.
He really stunk it up last night in the field at third. Had an error, should have had two, and Ibanez and Torkelson, both helped him out on two throws. Could have easily been a 4-5 error game…..
White Sox did him a solid since the Tiggers are in town. He won’t even hire a moving truck, just throw his sleeping bag and pillow into the trunk of ye olde eldorado and hitch it to the tigger team camper
Gotta be Nevin or Schoop. Nevin is an AAAA player and looked like he was wearing concrete shoes in RF last night.
I’d still rather see youth.
