5:05pm: The Tigers have announced the claim of Bristo, who has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. The corresponding move is transferring outfielder Austin Meadows to the 60-day injured list. Meadows was placed on the 10-day IL due to anxiety on April 7 and will now be ineligible to return until 60 days from that point, which would be early June.
1:35pm: The Tigers have claimed right-hander Braden Bristo off waivers from the Rays, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Bristo was designated for assignment on the weekend when the Rays acquired right-hander Javy Guerra from the Brewers. The Tigers have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move in order to open a spot for Bristo.
Bristo, 28, was drafted by the Yankees in 2016 and was on their farm through the end of 2022, working exclusively in relief apart from a couple of two-inning starts as an opener. He made it all the way up to Triple-A, posting big strikeout totals but also dealing out more than his fair share of walks. He tossed 103 1/3 Triple-A innings between 2021 and 2022, posting a 4.70 ERA with a 27.1% strikeout rate but also a 13.2% walk rate.
He reached free agency in the winter and signed a minor league deal with the Rays, who selected his contract just over two weeks ago. He made one appearance against the Red Sox, tossing three innings without allowing a run, but was optioned back to Triple-A Durham the next day. He has an ERA of 10.00 in a small sample of six appearances for the Bulls this year.
Bristo will now head over to the Tigers, who will see if they can help him better harness his strikeout stuff so that he limits the free passes. The righty still has a full slate of options and essentially no service time, meaning he can be a depth option for the foreseeable future as long as he continues to hang onto his spot on the 40-man.

Might be time to cut bait on Meadows. He is going to get paid, regardless. I don’t see the Tigers re signing him, and he is a FA at the end of the year. Even if he comes back, its doubtful he will have any trade value at the deadline, as no contender is going to trust him if he can’t handle the job in Detroit, which is currently pressure free. Give him his money and let him get better at his own pace.
For Love of the Game
Maybe. Andy Ibanez isn’t too impressive, and neither is Chasen Shreve. However, I’d just as soon keep the spot on the 40 man roster open (if one of those three is DFA’d) rather than filling it with yet another flamethrower with no control.
BSHH
Would the Tigers really need to DFA A. Meadows to free up a spot? Couldn’t he be transferred to the 60d-IL with much less repercussions?

Thanks for signing your letter bssh otherwise we wouldn’t know who wrote it.
Monkey’s Uncle
It’s his/her thing. And I for one don’t mind it at all, especially since I usually enjoy his/her posts.
stymeedone
Why transfer him to the 60 day? He is not part of the future. To activate him would mean taking at bats from players like Vierling, Baddoo, Nevin, or any other young player that could fit in the OF or DH, even his brother Parker. I’d even prefer to see Miggy get that playing time during his last year over Meadows. Its simply that bringing him back this year has no purpose. When salaries were not guaranteed, they had to keep them on the 60 until healthy to release them. Hopefully, they remembered to remove that clause once they negotiated the guarantee.
drasco036
Because you cannot dfa a player on the IL and moving him to the 60 day opens a slot on the 40 man roster.
BStrowman
@stymeedone
Wrong again buddy. Meadows is not a free agent at years end…….Tigers can give him arb if they wish.
No point in releasing him whatsoever. Tigers lost another trade but that was par for the course with old AL.
BStrowman
Tyler Nevin absolutely sucks. If you need to see him play then you know how things are going in Detroit…..
drasco036
Greinke dealt with the same issue in KC early in his career, got treatment and put together a Hall of Fame worthy career.
Motown is My Town
This is bad news regarding Meadows. Doubt he’s coming back in June when he’s eligible or even if he returns at all. Money is probably the last thing he’s thinking about as when you lose your health (physical or mental) nothing else really matters. Wishing him well and a strong recovery sooner rather than later
detroitdave84
Really sad for him because this stuff doesn’t suddenly go away. It can be harnessed but it doesn’t go away.
detroitdave84
Tigers have his younger brother in their system so they will bend over backwards to make sure they are doing right by him. It’s not like he doesn’t want to play. The guy worked so hard to get to the majors so this is probably making his anxiety worse seeing it all collapse.
Motor City Beach Bum
Another Edwin Uceta. Probably ticketed for the minors if they can sneak him through like Harris has been doing with all thevother bullpen signings? A few like Holton seem to be working out so far.
stymeedone
You mean a single one, like Holton.
Motor City Beach Bum
Mason Englert was a Rule V pick (really a castoff is a castoff) but he has looked pretty decent. Jury is still out on Wingenter in my opinion.
iang2424
Englert should have been protected by Texas. He wasn’t really a castoff. He had a healthy full year and had looked to put things together but Texas decided to keep a couple other guys over him (Eli White who they let go shortly after the deadline to add to the 40). Glad he has done well outside of one outing. Think he was a good pickup for them.
Motor City Beach Bum
I agree he is a good pickup. No insult intended with my comment.

The Harris moves have been working out, and guys going up and down as well. This series coming up with the Mets will UGE. Two former Tiger greats set to pitch, the Mets hanging just over .500 if they lose today, and boy what if ? Hinch must without a doubt send the umpires to check Scherzer’s hand at least once during the game,, not just after a inning. Sure it sounds bush, but hey, I don’t think any team won’t do it to him the rest of the year, like they use to do to Perry.
If the Tigers stun not only the Mets, but this fan by winning all three, what in Gods name will happen to the Mets ? If the Mets don’t sweep it’s a major victory for Detroit, they may even throw a parade down Woodward avenue. This should be a fun series in Detroit. I mean Baty stat’s could be almost leading the Tiger’s and he just come up. The Mets need to sweep, and the Tigers can pick up a lot of goodwill preventing that from happening. E rod versus Verlander, should be a fun one.
Kriam
Well that kind of definition of success is probably why Tigers are still floundering around. They win 1 of 3 against a 15-13 team and thats a major victory! What they got was a younger/cheaper Soto. Throws hard, but zero control. Oh goody! Glad to see Harris earning his keep.
Ace_
At least they’re finally done with Miguel Cabrera’s sorry ass after this season.
Motor City Beach Bum
I feel jealousy seeping out of your post. As a Marlins fan you must gave been deeply scarred when we stole him from you many years ago 😉 What name will you change to next?
Assdribble_Cabrera
That’s is that dude’s response every time Miggy comes up. Miggy does not even need come up and he throws that jab into the comments. He’s an ungrateful POS. He’s probably mad because Miggy boned his mom.
LABeachguy
You have already said that. You made your point. How much attention and clicks do you need?

First Bard, now Meadows. What’s causing all this anxiety? If it was me, I’d be thrilled just to be able to realize my dream to become a major league bb player. Unless it’s something in their personal lives.
Redsoxx_62
I would guess that the anxiety is caused by the stress of being scrutinized by every fan for everything you do, especially the scrutiny from yourself. As someone who has suffered from crippling anxiety, it’s no joke. It makes it hard to do anything, even if it’s something normal to you, or even something you love
advplee
Anxiety is not always about current circumstances. Some people have anxiety that is part of another mental illness. I understand how people who have never had to deal with debilitating anxiety might not understand, but it is not simply normal anxiety that most encounter at some point in life.

What Harris moves have been working out? Cutting Candelario? Watching Willi Castro be good enough for the First place Twins, but not good enough for Detroit? Signing Shreve to replace Chafin? Maton hits an occasional dinger, but the right handed side of that platoon has been non-existent. Vierling has been ok, but Sands has been bad at AAA. While I am rooting for Boyd, neither he or Lorenzen have looked good. Wait until Harris actually does something before giving him credit for anything. Haase, Rogers, Torkelson, Baez, Short, Schoop, Baddoo, Greene, Carpenter, Rodriguez, Wendt, Turnbull, Lange, Foley, Cisnero, Alexander, Vest and most of the injured players and rising prospects are not his doing, They are the players providing this teams result.
Motor City Beach Bum
Willi Castro is hitting .179 or something isn’t he? Shreve was decent until his last two outings. Holton and Englert have looked good. Signing Boyd who was well liked by teammates and fans was good for morale alone. I liked the Soto trade and the Jimenez trade and what we got back (Henry-Malloy, Maton, Vierling and Sands). Henry-Malloy in particular looks like a keeper. If we still suck and haven’t signed anyone by next year I might start to agree with you, but until then I’ve been okay with what Harris has done.
BStrowman
Grading a GM after a few months is a waste of everyone’s time.
some people told you 2 years ago that Mike Elias was doing a bad job. Ben Cherington was the worst GM In the world 6 months ago. It’ll take years to grade him. Whether or not those short term deals work out or not won’t be what matters either.
His first smart move was not giving out anymore stupid deals like Baez and ERod. E-Rod will be wearing a new uni next year if he keeps pitching like this. But ol Baez will be sucking payroll for the foreseeable future.
warnbeeb
A profile of Scott Harris said he’s a waiver wire junkie. I guess so.
Tell me if I’m wrong, but has any decent team ever been built with waiver wire pickups?
sergefunction
“Tell me if I’m wrong, but has any decent team ever been built with waiver wire pickups?”
The New York Knights.
Their one star came literally from the discard bin. They are Detroit’s model. They need a Joe Charbonneau type to show up from the baseball dead and hit 78 home runs after July 4.
TroyVan
Definitely cutting Candelario. Maton’s numbers are pretty similar (as a whole), and Maton is trending much higher (last 7: .300 AVG, 1 HR) compared to Candy (last 7: .167 AVG 1 HR. All this at just 14.5% of the cost of Candy. And, we’ve seen Jeimer’s ceiling. I think we owe it to ourselves to see what Maton’s ceiling might be. Gutsy move; so far paying off.
Good luck, Willi Castro. It was about time someone pulled a plug on that experiment. We have to find someone better for the future though.
Chafin had an outstanding season in 2022. In case you didn’t hear about it, Harris said this was a bit of a wait and see year so he could evaluate the talent. No sense in spending $6.25 million on a reliever for a ball club not really expected to have a lot of leads to hold while flush with young pitching talent.
Harris so far deserves a B for his efforts. Gotta admit the Tigers are off to a better start than anticipated.
warnbeeb
Chafin blew it. he opted out and ended up with less money in AZ,
TroyVan
I don’t know… the way I read his contract is that he gets $1M less in base salary, but has some incentives for 2023. There’s a club option for 2024 of $7.25M with a $750K buyout. So, barring some unforeseen injury or performance issue, he’ll make the same for 2023 if you factor in the money he stands to earn. Plus, he’s playing for a contender, so that’s worth something to him.
Red Wings
Too nervous to play baseball, imagine if he had to serve in the military or something actually stressful. This is only going to get worse, kids in school getting ‘anxiety’ accommodations like never before.
Dumpster Divin Theo
And Meadows came from that Tampa ball club. Wonder who the Tiggers had to part with?
