Padres star Manny Machado has sat out the past two games after being hit by a Brad Keller pitch on Monday. While initial x-rays came back negative, manager Bob Melvin told reporters this evening that a CT scan revealed a tiny fracture in Machado’s left hand (relayed by Kevin Acee and Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune).
For the moment, Machado remains day-to-day. Melvin noted there’s a possibility the third baseman will be able to play through the injury. San Diego has an off day tomorrow and figures to reevaluate Machado prior to Friday’s series opener with the Red Sox. Injured list stints can be retroactive up to three days, so the Friars could put backdate an IL placement to May 16 if it’s determined he’ll need a week or more to recover.
That’s obviously the outcome for which San Diego will hope, though it’d be suboptimal for Machado to play through an issue that could theoretically have an adverse effect on his power. Machado has been off to a middling start even before the injury. Through 170 plate appearances, last year’s NL MVP runner-up is hitting .231/.282/.372 with only five home runs.
Machado’s lack of production has contributed to a disappointing start for the club. San Diego lost two of three against Kansas City, dropping them to 20-24. They’re eight games back of the Dodgers in the NL West and only one win up on the last-place Rockies. The Padres entered play Wednesday 27th in the majors in runs scored and in the bottom half of the league in each of batting average, on-base percentage and slugging. Even in light of their pitcher-friendly home ballpark, that’s a remarkably surprising placement for a lineup that includes Machado, Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts and, for the past few weeks, Fernando Tatis Jr.
Over the past couple days, San Diego has kicked Ha-Seong Kim over from second to third base. Rougned Odor has picked up the stray starts at the keystone and could see additional playing time if Machado does hit the IL. The veteran infielder is hitting only .154/.254/.250 over 59 plate appearances after breaking camp out of Spring Training following an offseason minor league deal.

As bad as the team has been playing, maybe that will provide a spark. Someone will step up.
Butter Biscuits
They sure got that spark today, padres are cooked. Johnny hustle got his paycheck he doesn’t care
gbs42
He already had gotten one $300M contract and continued to play well enough to finish second in MVP voting last year. Saying he doesn’t care is insulting his character, which I’m certain you really know little about.
BeforeMcCourt
Gbs, it’s just as likely he is pressing because he cares too much and wants to prove the contract was worth it as it is he’s checked out because he got paid
However, I offer one rebuttal to your point. As soon as anyone saw the first Machado contract, they knew the opt out was there for Machado to get a 2nd massive payday. It was fully in his best interest to play as well as possible for the first four years of the deal, five if he didn’t get the extension
And Dodger fans know Manny very well. He played here before SD, remember? We can have opinions too. Valid ones! And many of those opinions weren’t positive even before he left LA
Fever Pitch Guy
triple – You may be right, but the article headline mocking the size of Machado’s hands is unnecessary.

I didn’t even know he was related to trump.

Manny hitting the DL might be the best thing that can happen to the Padres. They need to wake the F up. They are sleep walking through the season. The game today was a travesty. To lose a series to the Royals at home is inexcusable.
DarkSide830
Small is small, but hand injuries are quite problematic, even if they are small.
mlb fan
Manny’s an iron man, he’ll be back in a few days, but he’s off to a very slow start this year.
mlb fan
The Padres, for some odd reason, are less than the sum of their parts. On paper, they have more talent than the Dodgers, but on the field, they just lost 2 of 3 to the God awful Kansas City Royals.
citizen
not much loss there, replacement level stats.
Its early but padres maybe looking at a managerial change by the all star break.

With their minors depleted, AJ Preller’s spending spree isn’t paying off.
If they play him, they risk a diminished career. Should be a no brainer.
mlb fan
Preller does a LOT of trades, but 80% do not work out. Seattle got a 3-5 win type hitter in 1bman France, plus OF Taylor Trammel from him; and most of what they gave up was backup catcher Austin Nola, who has fallen out of favor in S.D.
Simm
80% is just wrong. Nearly every good player on the padres minus a couple were traded for.
Darvish, snell, mustrgrove, hader, cronenworth, tatis, Soto.
Since the rebuild of 2014/15 fire sale. The two terrible trades were clev and Nola. When you make as many trades as he does you are bound to lose a few.
Plus the padres system is already working its way back up. Now 3 top 100 guys and a couple more right on the fringe. Has already agreed to terms with next years top international prospect.
Preller has won some trades and lost some trades but the dude know how to find young talent.
mlb fan
Even the Soto trade has been a bust really and Trea Turner for a washed up Matt Kemp, please and don’t get me started on Max Fried. Preller has traded An ALL STAR team, to get an OVER PAID, under performing team that’s 4 games under .500
Cap & Crunch
Young *minor league talent
Their graduate rates are not that great
stymeedone
And then trade it away. The idea is to keep some cheap salaries so you get more bang from the buck. The cheap guy isn’t supposed to be Rougned, a retread. Its supposed to a rising star.
websoulsurfer
Soto has a 152 OPS+ this season. He struggled last year, but overall he is a top 20 player in baseball in his tenure with the Padres. Its far from a loss.
If both Abrams and Gore can stick at the major league level, it may eventually be a wash, but that is what trades are supposed to be.
He didn’t trade Turner for Kemp. Two different trades.
When you get the basics wrong, the validity of the rest of your opinions has to be seriously questioned.
websoulsurfer
The idea is to win games. End of conversation.
neurogame
@Simm – You’ve mixed up your trade facts.
Preller included Trea Turner in a 3-team trade with the Nationals and Rays to acquire Wil Meyers and others.
Preller then acquired Matt Kemp from the Dodgers for Yasmani Grandal and others.
But “yes,” overall he did lose those trades.
However he got really really lucky and traded that God-awful James Shields contract to the hapless White Sox to get two minor league prospects which did include little known Fernando Tatis Jr.
mlb fan
@Websoul.
..You can defend your Ivy League fakes if you want, but the Pads CURRENT RECORD AND the last few years SAYS IT ALL. I notice you didn’t list all the trades PRELLER has WON, because there really AREN’T ANY are there? A trained monkey could’ve built that team for LESS MONEY.
Simm
@neurogame
You tagged the wrong guy I didn’t mention that trade.
Can’t say he got lucky with the tatis trade and then not say unlucky with the ones that didn’t work. He traded freid after having Tommy John. You never know how that is going to go even if he had real talent. When you make this many trades you win some and you lose some.
Preller is prob around 50/50 but has been better since 2015. While clev trade sucked it’s not that big of a deal. The Nola trade was the real bad one. Not only from the players we sent but the total miss on who Nola was. Failed shortstop, older dude, hit well for half a season during juiced balls. Terrible defender. Give me France and Munoz back.
If we didn’t make these trade though we wouldn’t have all that great of a team.
Simm
@mlbfan
There are plenty of trade the padres won. Specially since 2015.
Mustrgrove, darvish, snell, cronenworth, tatis, hader, Soto.
Those are 7 off the top of my head. I wouldn’t undo any of those trades. You aren’t going to win them all when you make as many trades as he has.
He also has shown the ability to find high end talent via the draft or international signings. He built one of the highest ranked game systems ever. Has traded it away almost all that remained at last years deadline. Half a year later and they already have 3 top 100 prospects with 2 more guys knocking on the door.
To say a trained monkey could do that is just being ignorant or a hater.
mlb fan
152+ give me a break. Soto is so-so and LEADS MLB in ROLLOVERS to the first and second baseman. The new age, Ivy League stats don’t impress me, because the EYE TEST says he’s a SLIGHTLY above average hitter and WELL BELOW average defender and baseruner.
Simm
Your eye test should tell you he hits the ball very hard and a high rate.
Your eye test should tell you he has a great eye and leads the league in walks.
Your eye test should tell you that he reaches base as often as any of the best to do it.
Maybe you should go to the eye doctor.
mlb fan
@Simm…In virtually ALL those trades, Preller GAVE UP a lot more than he got back. I notice you did not bother to mention all the players he GAVE UP, to acquire those players, because it SABOTAGES your point, right?…I’d argue the ONLY trade Preller EVER WON in the last 6 years, is the Musgrove trade and mostly because I can’t remember what he gave up and I think it was insignificant. That being said, guys like Cronenworth, Snell & Musgrove are slightly above average players who could’ve EASILY been drafted in the 3rd round of the MLB draft. Darvish is good, but Preller will surely REGRET his 5 yr extension.
bronxmac77
What about Max Fried?
Heh heh heh heh…

bronxmac77
So… You’re done? Good.

Longtimecoming
Mlb – there is no objective way whatsoever to even grade the Soto trade yet. For starters, it wasn’t just a “Soto trade”. So there is that to consider. Until the end of 2024 when Soto’s contract expires (or even longer if they flip him for prospects) you can’t grade it. What if Padres win a WS? What if James Woods never makes the show – or was Woods even in the Soto part of the trade at all as opposed to Bell? What if Abrams never hits better than he is now; what if Gore reverts to his pre-2023 self; what if Soto reverts fully (on his way) to his 2022 pre-trade self.
To grade this trade you must think you can read the future of what all of these players will accomplish.
websoulsurfer
I listed several he lost, but you apparently have issues with reading comprehension. Didn’t need to list all of them. They were already listed in other’s posts.
About a .500 record on trades, which is exactly what trades are supposed to be. BOTH teams ae supposed to benefit. But since you don’t realize that fact, no sense in trying to have a conversation with you about it.
Are you saying you are a trained monkey?
websoulsurfer
You don’t really care about facts, so not going to try to educate you. Just going to mute you. No sense in even trying to converse with a person who only has one goal, being a troll.
websoulsurfer
That trade was a loser for the Padres, but Ty France has yet to have a 5 WAR season and Trammel is a bust so far.
Darvish worked out great.
Snell is a wash. Snell is no great shakes, but Patino is done and Mejia stinks.
Clevinger was a loss, but not because of Preller. You cannot predict TJ surgery.
Soto we don’t know yet how that will end long term, but he has a 152 OPS+ this season and so far he is far outproducing Gore and Abrams combined and Hassell is dropping down the prospect lists because of struggles this season.
Preller is batting about .500
fred8378
While I agree on Hassell, Gore and Abrams…everyone seems to be forgetting about James Wood, who will probably be the biggest return for Washington. He is a top 10 prospect right now.
websoulsurfer
I think Wood is a great prospect. Wood has an opportunity to impact the Nationals in 2026 if everything goes perfect. At this point he is a suspect. He is striking out 35% of the time in A+ ball and is not the best hitter in his league. In fact, he is barely in the top 20 in his league. Let’s wait until he at least sees AA pitching before anointing him.
If all goes perfect, one of those guys the Nationals received in the trade for Soto will become a career MLB average player. So far, the only one that has a chance of showing they can be that guy this season is Gore. Abrams is not playing well on O or D. None of the others will even sniff the majors this season.
Right now, Soto has produced a 136 OPS+ for the Padres with a 3.0 WAR and Abrams and Gore combined have produced a 0.9 WAR with the Nationals. A slight advantage to the Padres so far, but I believe it will end up being a wash by the end of 2024. Mostly because I believe in what we are seeing from Gore.
So, lets come back at the end of 2024 when we know if Soto is re-signed by the Padres.
cbraves
I would just play it safe and put him on the IL even if it’s just the minimum stay. Why risk anything?
This one belongs to the Reds
I didn’t realize Manny had small hands.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Or at least one small hand. Right?

Might be the left. They didn’t say.

Somebody’s gonna pay the price for the Padres’ failure; the early betting is on Bob Melvin.
User 2336683091
I wouldn’t count the Padres out just yet.
Brew88
118 games left in season.
To reach 90 wins (presumably landing a WC spot) they will need to go 70-48. Which is possible for this team if they can make some adjustments at the plate and on the basepaths and with RISP, but they better get after it starting tonight. Team-wide hitting chemistry usually doesn’t turn around quickly, so the SPs will need to step it up (better than what Darvish and Lugo gave them against the lowly Royals)
To win the division they’ll need to go somewhere on the order of 78-40, and that seems out of reach already. But stranger things have happened. If the Giants and Dbacks stay in the race and hold the Dodgers down a bit, it might help the Pads claw back into it..
nottinghamforest13
What’s the deal with MLB radio having pro-abortion commercials during games? That’s not what most people tune in to sports to hear about.
Rsox
The Padres are modern example of why playing fantasy Baseball and signing every player they can get their hands on and hoping to make a team. This strategy may have worked for late 90’s/early 00’s teams, but not so much anymore
JayRyder
Man bad numbers for him so far. Long contract and too early to tell. I’m thinking maybe the money went to his head. And he’s too busy living it up ?
Longtimecoming
Why did it take this long for this post to come out? I see so many hit the board while the game is still being played where they got injured – see D May today for instance.
SanDiegoSuperDissapointingPadres
Someone’s got to take responsibility! Maybe the fact that there isn’t 1 real hitting coach? 3 different hitting coaches that aren’t really hitting coaches, they could start the firing process there.
Firing Melvin is about as dumb as firing Preller. Melvin is a big league coach and trash Preller all you want but the guy took SD from small market team to the next level.
The front office needs to bring in some analytics guys like yesterday. That’s an area that’s weak for sure. They should of been on the phone after the 1st Dodger series hiring an analytics team, but if that wasn’t a phone call made today expect the same results.
Analytics and a real hitting coach could be a huge game changer! Shoot, hire Griffey!
beyou02215
I still don’t understand why the Padres gave in to Machado’s opt out threats. They should have kept the pressure on him to have a huge year this year and then saw what happened. If he walks, he walks. The Padres are going to regret a lot of those deals!
fred-3
Should’ve signed Soto to that extension and let Manny walk
southern lion
At least it’s his small hand. He still has full use of his large hand. 🙂

In the long run, signing Soto to that deal would be WORSE than signing Manny. HERE’S a novel idea; why not try DRAFTING, developing & KEEPING your OWN stars from college or High school? Ask the Houston Astros how much they like the cost savings of DEVELOPING & drafting your own stars.
