Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga will undergo surgery to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow, manager Aaron Boone tells reporters, including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com (Twitter links). Loáisiga won’t be able to throw for the next three to six weeks and Boone estimates he won’t return to the big league club until August or September.
Loáisiga, 28, has been on the injured list for most of the year so far. He made just three appearances before hitting the shelf a few weeks ago, with his ailment listed at that time as elbow inflammation. It now seems the specific problem has been found and he will go under the knife, missing the next few months of the season.
It’s an unfortunate development for both the club and Loáisiga, who has emerged as a key piece of the bullpen in recent seasons. Going back to the start of 2020, the righty has tossed 145 innings with a 3.04 ERA. He’s struck out 21.5% of batters faced in that time while walking just 7% and has kept balls in play on the ground at an excellent 58.9% clip.
The Yankees have been getting effective relief work even with injuries to Loaisiga, Lou Trivino and Tommy Kahnle, as their collective 2.93 ERA ranks second in the majors right now. But they will have to now stretch that out for a few more months with depleted depth.
For Loaisiga personally, he is making $2.26MM this season in his second pass through the arbitration system. He’ll be set for one more in 2024 before he’s slated to reach free agency. His earning power for next year will be limited based on the fact that he won’t be able to contribute much this year.
lol yankees
Yeah I don’t look at actual people getting injuries as funny.
“He might have survived…but someone on the internet he didn’t know LOL’d at his injury.”
Thank you for your sacrifice, internet concern warrior.
So you think guys getting injured is, indeed funny?
Ace, Fraham, etc… Dude has a new troll account every day. Can’t be a more boring person on these boards.
This is that Ace guy too?
I think I’ll just call him/them Cybil.
Lol. I count at least five others… Degrom Texas Ranger is another which is the least troll-ish.
Ironically deGrom TR showed up on the deGrom injured list thread, quite a lot.
All these Yankees fans are saying “we’ll be better when we’re healthy” or “we’ve been unlucky with injuries.” That’s an issue every year though with them and who’s to say more guys won’t get injured as/if current injured players come back.
I still don’t get ‘lol’ at a guy getting injured.
I meant more at the state of the organization right now rather than the player being injured
A bone in the Lasagna
This too shall pasta.
The Yankees were fortunate enough in 1996 to catch a Torre.

Bam, Mac ‘n Cheese!!
Grossly overused in 2021, this is the cost. Sad.
He only pitched 70 innings. What do you consider a normal workload?
Every Yankee pitcher is overworked according to whyhayzee. It’s one of his many ways of bashing the Yankees, Boone, or the fans. And he can’t let a Yankee thread go by without bashing at least one of them. Death, taxes, and whyhayzee crashing a Yankee thread. Bear in mind he is a RS fan, but there are plenty of RS fans who have outgrown the need to bash their rivals.
He usually is a bit entertaining in a sad sort of way. This attempt at a troll was weak.
Ironically, The Yankees and Red Sox are tied for last, each above .500.
Irony can be quite ironic.
Collectively the pen burns out every September. Always one of the best bullpens in the first half, things unravel from overuse after that.
Another injury prone player. He’s excellent when he’s there, but he misses time every year going back to the minors. No matter. The Yankees build bullpens as well as any team. They didn’t build depth on the position player side.
Yankees haven’t come in last in their division since 1990. It could happen in 2023.
In the long view, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to happen. As long as they keep putting a good enough team out there, it’s just going to keep being the same thing. Finishing last could force some changes.
You might have something. The Red Sox have four WS wins since 2004, and some cellar dwelling sprinkled in there.
I have some memory of that 1990 team, and boy, they weren’t good at all.
Wasn’t that the Danny Tartabull era? At least the Yankees had the distraction of being a fixture on Seinfeld for those lean years.
Nah. They’ll deal Peraza or Cabrera and an arm for a bat if the offense doesn’t pick up in another month.
@Yankees
Correct me if I am wrong, but Cabrera won’t bring back much as he is another over rated prospect. Now Peraza on the other hand could bring back something of value.
Objectively, Cabrera will be a throw-in but his cost-control has some value. I have no idea what they can do to stay under the next tax threshold.
I’m not sure either but they might have to go over the next tax threshold if they want to succeed.
Anybody badmouthing Stump Merrill…
(Smashes beer bottle on bar)
answers to ME!
I’m not sure they considered their options long enough, this seems somewhat Spur of the moment.
That’s a bummer, he’s got good stuff, and he’s been a really good bullpen piece for what has been a strong Yankees bullpen.
Do the Yankees have an up to date cat scan machine or licensed doctor
They have a plague doctor and an alchemist. And a bowl of leaches.
Then why did they hire an Arsonist?
Arson Judge?
Do the Yankees have an up to date cat scan machine or licensed doctor?
Why would the Yanks scan cats?
Is anyone on the medical staff licensed?
Yes. In Ecuador.
Doctor Vinnie Boombatz
This wouldn’t have happened if he had not participated in the WBC, amiright?!?

Welcome to the 1965 Yankees 2.0 — the year everyone seemed to get old at once.
Hey, I remember those teams!
Roger Repoz, Dooley Womack, Steve Whitaker… just a tad short of monument park material.
Frank Trepadino.
Believe it or not, I met that guy. He drove a UPS delivery truck alongside my Dad in NY. Yes… Yankees did that in those days.
So did I , At a party. Was a friend of a friend
MLBTR should have a section dedicated to Yankees injury news at this point
Damn, talk about when it rains, it pours. The Yankees are the version of the walking dead, except they are on the IL.
I was like “here we go” when Holmes couldn’t handle that bouncer. Not his fault tho. The offense on the other hand…
