The Angels are set to promote pitching prospect Sam Bachman for his Major League debut, reports Robert Murray of FanSided (Twitter link). Bachman, the ninth overall selection in the 2021 draft, will be used out of the bullpen to begin his big league career, Sam Blum of The Athletic adds. Bachman isn’t on the 40-man roster and will need to be added.
The 23-year-old Bachman ranks seventh in the Angels’ system at Baseball America, fifth at MLB.com and fourth at FanGraphs. Scouting reports on the 6’1″ righty tout potent fastball/slider combo, with the heater capable of reaching triple digits and the slider giving him a potentially plus pitch with which to miss bats. Command is the most oft-cited question mark with Bachman, as is often the case with power-armed hurlers of this nature, and he also dealt with back and biceps injuries since being drafted.
Bachman has gotten out to a tough start in Double-A this season, posting a 5.81 ERA in six starts — a total of just 26 1/3 frames. He’s fanned nearly a quarter of his opponents but also issued walks at an ugly 16.9% clip. That work has come exclusively out of the rotation, however, and the Angels will now take a look at how Bachman fares in shorter stints when he can air out his already plus heater at max intensity. Baseball America’s scouting report on Bachman notes that his velocity has a tendency to begin dropping after around three innings anyhow, which could certainly point to a future in the bullpen.
The Angels’ bullpen has been a top-heavy unit in 2023, ranking seventh in the Majors with a 3.57 ERA that’s largely due to dominant performances from Carlos Estevez, Matt Moore and Jaime Barria, who all sport sub-2.00 ERAs. Righties Andrew Wantz and Chris Devenski have been sharp as well, but the Angels have cycled through several less-successful options to round out the relief corps. Anaheim has already moved on from veteran righty Ryan Tepera, and they’ve received ugly results from fellow veteran Aaron Loup. They’ll hope Bachman’s high-octane arsenal can help to solidify the group and take some pressure off the likes of Estevez and Moore, who are tied with a team-leading (by a wide margin) 22 appearances apiece.

Our minor league system is providing significant MLB talent! Neto, Detmers, Ohoppe via Marsh, Silseth, Ward, Moniak via Syndagaard, Walsh, Trout, Thaiss, Sandoval via Maldonado, Bachman! And there are more relief pitchers coming before the season ends! Great job front office! So much for MLB ranking us 28th out of 30 organizations! Trades of the century Syndegaard for Moniak and Ohoppe for Marsh! Down the road these deals will only look better and better! Marsh has now come back to his normal stats with tons of strike outs and Philly paid the 6 million still owed on Syndegaards final 2 months! Awesome job Perry!
kellin
Silseth and Detmers aren’t *that* great. Its looking more like Silseth is settling into a bullpen role, which is probably where Detmers should end up.
Halo11Fan
Detmers allowed one run in his last start and then the bullpen did its thing.
A lot of smart people think Detmers is pretty darn good.
As for Silseth, he had a .9 ERA in the PCL. And has been very effective in his relief role, which is why he’s 4th on the team in WPA.
User 781115931
What? Detmers is a perfectly capable 3 or 4 starter. His ERA looks worse than it should due to the bullpen seemingly letting every inherited runner score when he gets pulled. He’s walked a few more guys than you would like but his K-BB% of 20% is nothing to scoff at
kellin
Wasn’t Detmers supposed to be a #1 type? Or are first rounders not intended to be that high quality? #1 vs 3-4 starter? Who will be the team’s ace after Ohtani leaves? I’m asking these questions because I don’t know, and I’m curious what others think.
Halo11Fan
Detmers was suppose to be a number two or three. Nothing wrong with that. This will be his first full year in the major leagues. He had a great second half last year and pitched like an ace.
He reminds me a little of Lackey before Lackey took off. He’d pitch great, but it was always that one inning that got him. He figured out how to close out that one inning and became an ace.
I wouldn’t give up that won’t become a free agent until 2028.
User 781115931
Scouts saw Detmers as a high floor pitcher who could get to the majors quickly with a #2 ceiling. Cy Young/MVP contenders are incredibly hard to come by, even if you’re picking at the top of the draft. Seriously, go look at the 2020 draft and see what has happened to some of the players taken ahead of Detmers.
His current performance is about what you’d expect from a guy with that profile in his age 23 season.
As for the team’s next ace, I’ve got a feeling it’s a guy not currently in the organization. Maybe it could be Reid’s younger brother who is draft eligible this year mlb.com/prospects/draft/parker-detmers-806471
RyÅnWKrol
If the hierarchy of draft picks ran parallel with MLB depth charts, Mike Piazza never even becomes a Major Leaguer. Draft picks are constantly overrated and underrated. Some even thought Mike Trout would never be more than a capable starting outfielder. Then you have the old Moneyball/Billy Beane backstory, showing how badly the Mets missed on picking Beane in the first round. Detmers was only called up last season, and has shown flashes of being a frontline starter while having yet to pitch a full season. Not every player comes out of the gate guns blazing, not even Trout. Detmers will likely be a valuable #3, and if he really figures things out, could work his way to a #2. Ace? Probably not. But I’ll take Detmers and the 4 1/2 years he has left under club control.
rottenboyfriend
Really? The guy throws a no hitter in his 6th start last year and U R unhappy? A lot of the Angel issues this year have been the pen and the defense! His velocity is touching 95-96 and he’s only 23! How long has it been since another first rounder we selects did better than Detners this early in their careers?
rottenboyfriend
If U want to keep Ohtani U need your farm system to deliver quality players that make around the minimum the first 2-3 years. It’s gonna take 45 per to resign Ohtani and with Trout and Rendon that’s 120M for three out of 26 players!
Halo11Fan
That’s true, but it’s widely believed Piazza was chemically dependent.
I eliminate the chemically dependent players from such comparisons.
Omarj
Detmers has a ton of potential, and I think if he were in another organization, he’d perform better, but it is still early for him. Silseth has talent and it’s early to affirm RP or SP.. But, Detmers in a BP role, though, really?
Redstitch108* 2
Detmers is still young. He will be an absolute ace. Stuff is filthy.

It must have triggered Halo11 to read:
“The Angels’ bullpen has been a top-heavy unit in 2023, ranking seventh in the Majors with a 3.57 ERA that’s largely due to dominant performances from Carlos Estevez, Matt Moore and Jaime Barria, who all sport sub-2.00 ERAs”
Halo11Fan
And how many games has this pen blown. If you think I’ve been wrong, then you are in denial.
It’s hard to believe anyone doesn’t realize I was right.
This team is 21st in WPA. We’d be in first place if we had a top ten pen. The only reason we have a chance is the Rangers are 29th.
Plugnplay
I agree Rotten, the O’ Hoppe and Moniak trades are appearing to look like flat out steals. For what? Marsh and 2 months of Thor. Wowzer!
GoogleMe
Rotten True. The rosters in the minors are much deeper than they have been in recent past. They don’t have a lot of highly touted players and those that they do have are called up immediately. The Angels had 3 in the top 100, which is the most they have had since Adell, Marsh, and Canning. Two of those top 3 are already Angels.
Perry addressed the bullpen last year and I thought that was a good sign. It has been an area of neglect for the Angels for years. Unfortunately, they were all misses. Loup, Tepera, Bradley, and Iglesias all didn’t work out last year or this year. Bullpen via free agency is always a risk and you never know what you will get. This year he has hit on a couple of those free agent bullpen guys in Estevez and Moore.
Perry has also targeted power arms in the international draft. Again, there are no guarantees with 16 year olds. Most of them will not make it, but some of them may. This is something other teams have been doing for years. The Angels are late to the party as per usual.
I am not going to let the dust settle on Moniak, but no question he has added a spark both offensively and defensively. . However, he is up there hacking and not really looking for pitches. Teams will adjust and stop throwing strikes. He has made several good plays and has 4DRS. He also had a almost great play on a HR allowed by Moore, which would have gave him 5 DRS already. Tremendous effort.
I think we are good hands with Neto and O’Hoppe. These are 2 positions that the Angels don’t have the best success rate. They are only 22-23 and only going to get better. If we have seen the worst version of them, the future is pretty bright.
rottenboyfriend
We basically got Moniak for free and the Phillies paid the last two months of Syndergaard’s 21M contract that by the time of the trade was way more than he deserved based on his performance! In 2016 Moniak was the first pick of that years draft! Philly saved us 6 million bucks and gave us Micky! Even if his performance to date is not sustainable whatever he becomes was a charity donation from the Phillies organization! He definitely has some skills!

Probably not Loup; I say it’s Bartolo, errrrr, I mean Moronta.

Now the Angels have to get a pitcher with the last name Turner and in the late innings they could have Bachman Turner Overdrive.

You should see the young guy they have in AA, Joe Mozartman.
pohle
very aggresive. moronta could be optioned and wantz to the 60, or loup could go, both have been shaky but even with all of his struggles i think they should keep him on board for a little while longer
rottenboyfriend
Loup should have been designated for assignment weeks ago! ERA 7.70 He can’t get anybody out and has cost us at least 3 losses! Contract or no contract he has to go bye bye!
orange2001
Moronta seems like the obvious choice
Halo11Fan
Loup and Moronta have both been terrible.
Moronta has options, so he’s the one that has to go.
Buff Barnacles
What a confusing move;. And what generates a confusing move? Panic!
bronxmac77
No no. The Angels haven’t signed Joe Panik.
Yet.
orange2001
They’ve won 6 of their last 7 games. And right in the thick of things. Far from panicking.
Halo11Fan
Orange. I’m very optimistic about the pen.
Is it possible we have four reliable RPs?
If you have four reliable RPs, you can find a 5th and perhaps a 6th by using a number of pitchers in low leverage situations. Throwing that kind of mud on the wall is fine.
The hard part is finding the three or four, that allows you to find the fifth or sixth. I’m finally optimistic.
Halo11Fan
This isn’t a panic move at all. Devenski and Silseth were panic moves. The Angels needed to find two more bullpen arms to go with Moore and Estevez and threw a lot of mud on the wall to find the right two.
This is now trying to find a piece to add to the four RPs who have a stronghold in the circle of trust. Bachman is going to pitch in low level situations. I think Nevin is nuts, but I doubt Nevin will use him in high leverage situations until they know what they have.
orange2001
H11F – agreed, I’m finally feeling a bit more comfortable with the pen. Not having Tepera as an option is helping. And might soon need to cut ties with Loup if he can’t figure things out (very) soon. Can Bachman be our closer of the future? I remember he was projected as a closer when drafted. I know Ben Joyce is getting all the hype now, but until he can throw strikes, he might be Bobby Jenks 2.0.
Halo11Fan
I had Bachman as an RP and was quite vocal with the pick. It doesn’t take a scout to realize a pitcher who short arms the ball can’t last as a starter.
That was the highest draft pick the Angels had this century and we drafted an RP? It still makes me mad. Perry redeemed himself by drafting Neto. Neto looks like a 10, and using a top ten pick on an RP is almost always going to be a 1.
GoogleMe
Halo It could have been worse. They could have drafted Rocker like the Mets that picked after them and lost a draft position when they were unable to sign him.
Halo11Fan
Waiting a year would not have been worse.
carllafong
They are not panic moves if they work– and both Devenski and Silseth have worked. The Angels have four or five additional minor league candidates close to being able to join this pen as the season progresses– and they will replace the stragglers. They need to add an elite starter by the deadline. I would describe the Angels front office as acting with urgency. They’re not going to blow another six weeks with older players not getting the job done. The ability to pivot Silseth back to the pen was smart and decisive.
GoogleMe
I wished I could agree with you guys, but this does seem like a bit of a reach.
The Angels bullpen has done a good job to this point of not walking hitters and keeping the ball in the yard. They are ranked #3 in BB/9 and #4 in HR/9. These are good indicators. One thing they don’t do well is strike out hitters. They are #24 is SO/9. The additions of Silseth and Morantas were to increase the strikeouts. I don’t believe they are sold on either. The addition of Bachman is another attempt of finding a power arm. Bachman had a 0.77 WHIP coming out of college, but currently has 20 walks in 25 innings pitched in AA. Last I checked, the home plate was the same size in the major leagues as it was in the minors.
Kershaw's Lesser Known Right Arm
Not sure what’s so confusing about it. The Angels are trying to pretend they’re a perennial contender to try and butter up Ohtani this winter
bronxmac77
Ohtani is trying to pretend he cares about ‘contending’.
Kershaw's Lesser Known Right Arm
Is that why he’s not going to the Yankees?
bronxmac77
Actually, yes.
carllafong
You can’t pretend you’re a perennial contender– their past failures are fact and there for all to see. But when you look at the Angels present and future up the middle with Moniak in center, Neto at short and O’Hoppe behind the plate– they’re future is looking very good and are certainly being successful rebuilding on the fly. Give credit where credit is due.
Kershaw's Lesser Known Right Arm
I will give credit to Neto and O’Hoppe. The O’Hoppe injury was a devastating blow. However, I’m going to wait and see with Moniak. I’m more inclined to believe he’s just on a hot streak right now more than he is the next big thing
Omarj
Re-evaluate that response. As bad as their backend starters have performed, and BP has given up runs in close games, bad coaching/ game management, and nearly last-place defense, they’re 1 game out of the wild card. If the Angels fix things internally, or had they been better prepared before the start of the season, it’s an entirely different story. Plenty of time to make trades and fix things. There has been some hope with some young guys stepping up. The fact that they’re above .500 with all that has happened vs under is a good sign for once.
GoogleMe
Omarj Agreed. The back end of the rotation has been horrible. On the bright side, they have just put up some good outing against a pretty solid lineup in the Red Sox. The Marlins are goming to town against our front end starters. The Marlins are one of the worst teams when it comes to scoring runs, so we know what should happen, so let’s hope that it does.
The rotation has all looked pretty decent in their most recent start. The defense has also lookied better. Time for the Angels to go on a bit of a run.
Old York
Oh, I’m confusing him with Tal Bachman. Nevermind…
bronxmac77
This… (points finger for emphasis), THIS is truly the move you’ve been waiting for!
Halo11Fan
The move the Angels have been waiting for is finding two RPs to go along with Estevez and Moore.
They might have done just that. Since Devenski and Siselth have been placed in the circle of trust, the Angels have won 6 out of the last 7.
That was always their problem. As I’ve been saying, this team will go as far as the pen will take them.
orange2001
Right now the Angels would be the talk of baseball if they had an adequate pen from day 1. How many games has the pen cost the team already??

Even though his stats this year aren’t where you would normally expect to get a call up to the Show, his issue is 20 walks in 26 innings! Other than the walks his other numbers are solid. The Front Office wants to see what they have with Bachman now before making any reliever trades which would require giving up prospects! Adell continues to tear the cover off the ball so he will have the first crack at replacing Renfroe when he becomes a free agent after the season! Go Halos!
Rexhudler86
Wouldn’t surprise me if they trade adell, the way moniak is playing he can replace renfroe, probably wouldn’t be expensive to resign him in the off-season either.

Just a theory, but the Angles need to know what they have in the wings for when they trade Ohtani. Need to know what they need going forward.

minasian said he would be the guy who would help the team right away. he not only stayed 5 years in minors but also is not very good.
Halo11Fan
For RPs, I think WPA is a much better stat than ERA.
It takes into account, runs allowed, inherited runners who scored and the situations.
I always say the proof is in the pudding.
The Angels rank 20th.
The Angel Players that have the worst WPA are:
Tepera, Loup, Herget and Wantz.
The Angel Players that have the best WPA are:
Estevez, Moore, Devenski, Silseth and Barria
kellin
Thanks for pointing out WPA. I’m still learning all the different advanced stats. I got creamed by Steve for asking a silly question about Moniak in the last chat — yes, I knew it was a silly question — but Im still not sure what he meant.
bronxmac77
Steve is the answer to a lot of silly questions.
cptitan10
Hopefully Bachman’s problems with command are due to the experimental sticky baseballs used in the Southern League. If not, why would you promote a reliever who walks batters at that rate? If they’re looking for someone to join the “circle of trust,” you know Nevin won’t be limiting him to low leverage situations. Wise and Hezel better have the solutions for Bachman, and quickly, or else this could backfire. Big series are coming up. The blowpen has to become a distant memory.
aragon
Why are they valling him up now? He hasn’t been good in the minors.
prov356
aragon – his bad numbers in AA are as a starter. Their intention is to use him as a reliever where he might be more valuable and better able to command the strike zone in shorter outings.
Ham Fighter
The angels do realize they have a triple A team why are they constantly calling up guys from double A who don’t even have great numbers there?
kellin
AAA team with the 6th best record in the AL and the same number of wins as the Astros. Call it what you will.
carllafong
Moniak, Silseth, O’Hoppe and Devenski all came from triple-A. Hasn’t Neto done well from double-A?
Ham Fighter
Silseth and o’hoppe came from AA on first call ups
GoogleMe
Yep, Silseth was in AA last year when he was called up last year. He was in AAA this year when he was called up.
RyÅnWKrol
Because their AAA team plays at an altitude that is less than 1,000 feet lower that Coors. That makes it difficult to get an accurate read on players. Plus, this is for a spot way down on the depth chart. And with a 26 man roster these days, teams can afford to use that, and perhaps another spot or two, to have prospects finish their development at the Major League level. And players who can get through that are usually the players who end up successful.
RyÅnWKrol
Moniak is really helping to find closure on Adell. They won’t get a star for him at this point, but they could possibly land a back end starter or another established reliever.
HBan22
Have you seen Adell’s numbers in AAA this season? He might be the next Mickey Moniak the way he’s looking right now…
kellin
So lets trade Adell for a good BP piece.
Rexhudler86
So far I would keep moniak, over adell. Hopefully they can get trade him for a top reliever prospect. Than trade rengifo for a bag of balls so they can bring fletcher back up.
carllafong
Adell has the same issues– he’s striking out 40% of the time. All of the power numbers are heavily inflated at Salt Lake. Moniak is the far superior defender and baserunner. Adell will be a good player, but I’d prefer to use him as trade bait for a starter and re-sing Renfroe to a three year deal.
Halo11Fan
Sorry carllafong, Adell is striking out 30% of the time.
I think you’re wrong on every comparison. Adell doesn’t hit cheap HRs. What Adell doesn’t do is control the strike zone, and until he does, hes not going to be a good player.
Moniak is not controlling the strike zone either, and this mirage will end sooner than later. But as long as it will last, it’s great.
Halo11Fan
Dont expect this Moniak ride to continue. He has 11 Ks and 1 BB and has a 35 KRate.
What he is doing is unsustainable.
