11:46am: The team announced they have indeed selected the contract of Bauers. To make room on the 40-man roster, reliever Lou Trivino was transferred to the 60-day IL.
7:59am: The Yankees have optioned outfielder Franchy Cordero to Triple-A, the team announced. A corresponding move will come before tonight’s match with the Rangers, but there’s been some reporting that the team will select Triple-A outfielder Jake Bauers. Aaron Judge’s injury status will also likely play a part in the Yankees’ next move, with the team awaiting a report on the MRI on his hip, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
Cordero, always a player with tantalizing power, belted four home runs in his first seven games for the Yankees this season, and looked to be staking a claim for the team’s problematic left field spot. However, since April 13, Cordero has gone just 1-for-28 with 13 strikeouts and no walks. That’s left him with an overall line on the season of .151/.182/.396 with four home runs.
The Yankees signed Cordero to a split major/minor league contract late in the spring which paid him $1MM in the big leagues and $180K in the minors. Cordero has bounced around a few teams since making his debut for the Padres in 2017, with teams looking to unlock the raw power which makes him such an enticing player. Yet at every stop Cordero’s struggled to make enough contact to find that power, as his career .215/.282/.387 line suggests.
With Cordero heading back to Triple-A, the team looks set to take a chance on Bauers, a player who’s struggled over three big league seasons but is hitting .304/.448/.797 with nine home runs in 87 plate appearances at Triple-A this season.
It is a little concerning that the Yankees came out of last season with a clear need in left field yet find themselves still without a clear answer one month into the new season. Oswaldo Cabrera has seen the most time there, but he’s limped to just a .213/.238/.300 line this season. Veteran Aaron Hicks has been even worse, posting a .135/.220/.135 line in 41 plate appearances.
This should not be tagged as Rangers’ news.
They are playing the Yankees so it’s technically relevant
Ask for your money back.
I did that.
And wilk do so again.
Cashman’s dumpster diving would make Lyle, Lyle the crocodile envious
As a Guardians fan I’m going to be quite mad if the Yankees somehow figure out how to unlock Bauers after his run here. The swing always looked so good, he had a kind if early Cody Bellinger flair that seemed great.
No he didnt
Yes he did.
Might be sellers for first time since ’16. Bader, Severino and Torres.
The team is 15-12 despite having piss poor offensive production and Schmidt, German, and Brito comprising 60% of the rotation. There’s no chance in hell the Yankees will be sellers
Not saying it’s likely but suggesting there’s no chance is just wishful thinking.
The lifeless 2021 team clawed its way to a postseason appearance despite things looking incredibly grim at times. This team is far more talented, at least it will be when the injured guys return. The Yankees don’t become sellers unless it’s truly the end of the road like in 2016
The Yankees are a really bad team and the return of Donaldson, Bader and Stanton will not make them any better.
Actually, Stanton and Donaldson will make it worse.
Hahahahaha
Maybe he meant cellars
That’s realistically not going to happen with this roster.
YBC – The thing is, which roster? The current active one?
Not saying this will happen, but if Judge & Stanton & Rodon & Effross & Kahnle & Montas & Severino & Trivino & Donaldson & Bader all miss at least 73% of the season then would you still expect a guaranteed playoff spot?
This is why I don’t make predictions, you can’t predict injuries or the severity of them.
Lmao. Do you even watch baseball?
@Stud- The Yankees being sellers this year would be a total disaster. Can we put that to rest for now, since we’ve only played a month? It’s way too soon to suggest that. If it was the All-Star break and it was like this, then it’s a conversation.
“Cordero….belted four home runs in his first seven games…However, since April 13, Cordero has gone just 1-for-28 with 13 strikeouts and no walks.”
Franchy doing Franchy things.
Franchy the enigma.
Joey Gallo part deux.
Gromit – Not a good comparison.
Gallo has a career .802 OPS with 184 HR’s and two GG’s.
Franchy has a career .669 OPS with 25 HR and never sniffed a GG.
How many 100 RBI/100 run seasons does Gallo have?
Very few players ever have 100/100 seasons.
Plenty have. None hitting .202 or less.
Bref says his fielding is 1 run above average. I just saw him miss 2 flyouts that turned into extra base hits yesterday. I don’t trust defensive metrics one bit.
deGrom – The worst part about defensive metrics is they are impossible for the Average Joe to quantify. We just have to trust the numbers that are thrown at us … or not.
Let’s go Jake! Yanks stay under the last salary tabu and maybe load up next year? Maybe if they get everyone back they make a push later in the season. Not very optimistic.
Keep bringing up the kids and giving them opportunities……Double AA is loaded with pitching which hopefully Cash won’t trade in mass to his best bud Billy Beane in Oakland for a injury masked pitcher who almost immediately will go on the IL only to find out in the off season due for Tommy John…….
Need Bauer to be last year’s Matt Carpenter!
Bauer may not even be 2021 Carpenter
If he doesn’t hit immediately, he’ll be Karen Carpenter and not be allowed near the plate.
We’ve only just begun…
The Yankees are in free fall. Thank you Cashman, you deserve a salary increase and a 10 years contract extension
I’ve never been a Cashman basher but he’s made some brutal moves in the last year plus. Donaldson, IKF, Montas, Effros, Bader, Benintendi, Rodon, and if you want to go back further, Gallo.
didnt give up much for montas, effross, bader helps them to baby aaron judge which is a win for them, and as long as the baby yanks(particularly in the infield) do decently well they can weather the donaldsons and ikfs
Ah, “didn’t give up much for Montas”…..really….both those guys could in theory could be helping now with both starting and relief….how Montas, who was already hurt when they acquired him, got the pass past the always dependable Yankee doctors is the root of the problem.
Bader, (who doesn’t help them baby Judge), while had a good post-season, was known for his inability to stay on the field which is all we’ve seen so far….and for a dependable Monty who takes the ball every 5th day……
Effros, is just another in a long line of acquisitions who almost immediately goes on the IL soon to be TJ surgery for the Yankees…..
@pohle- Yes I totally disagree with that comment also. Didn’t give up to much? If we had those all prospects right now it’s fair to say Bryan Reynolds or another left field piece would be a Yankee right now. How good would Bryan Reynolds look right now in the outfield with Stanton AND Judge both hurting? Smh
Agreed captain. Cashman is past his prime also. But he still will have a job as long as he is Steinbrenner‘s buddy. winning is not necessary, just making money, of which they continue to do and will always do because Yankee fans will still pay to see the Yankees in any medium available, even if they stink.
Reynolds was never being shopped by Pittsburgh, and the Yankees can’t add his salary w/o going over the last threshhold. If the trade target makes over minimum, Cashman’s Yankees can’t afford him.
Reynolds wasn’t being shopped for this season, but he definitely was last season. Peraza/ Dominguez, Sweeney, Gil, Medina, Waldichuk and others were discussed between two teams.
There were discussions but remember the Pirates wanted pitching for Reynolds. That’s something the Yankees just don’t have.
Cashman’s reluctance to trade top prospects is why Frankie Montas is a Yankee right now and Luis Castillo isn’t.
Giving up a bunch of good young strong arms, and acquiring a injury riddled below average CF to baby a $40 million dollar a year ‘Captain’… Is good?
Yeah but Bronx, Stanton and Judge are always hurt so Reynolds Would of been perfect to acquire. Peraza.+ would of definitely got it done last season. The Yankees blew it for sure. The Pirates would of moved Reynolds last season.
Judge isn’t always hurt.
Did you hit the snooze alarm last year?
I’ll agree on Stanton. He’s a statcast creation, but as an actual player, he’s a joke. Far overrated. He never runs. Whenever he tries, he injures something.
Can’t blame Cashman on Efross and Beni. The rest…
you mention all the bad ones but not any of the good ones like your current closer, current 1st baseman, or your all star gg catcher. yes they may have signed rizzo as a free agent but if he didnt have the comfort level of playing there already could you have guaranteed he would have signed? Players usually are more likely to sign with prior teams.
IKF was mainly to be a placeholder and more of an addition by subtraction. IKF was destined to be utility guy and Torres was better once he moved back to 2nd. He also helped you get rid of Sanchez as well.
Am i saying Cashman is great, far from it but i would take him over eppler any day of the week and i think many teams would take him over what they have too.. You have to give him credit for his good and bad.
IKF was acquired to be the starting SS and he predictably sucked in the field and at the plate.
No. IKF was acquired to be a stop gap solution for 1 year before promoting Volpe or Peraza. After that, he was destined to be their super utility guy. I swear, people just comment to comment here. Majority of these comments have 0 clue what they are talking about
I don’t bash anyone. But if they screw up the job, I say so. Only my opinion. But Boston has changed FO frequently, and have won 4 World Series since 2001. They hold people accountable and don’t let them ride on past laurels.
Kind of like George used to.
Still haven’t found a replacement for Yankee-lifer Brett Gardner!
Gardner is still available
Ok then you can have him then.
And yet, Cordero was worth trading Andrew Benentendi for. smh
Benny was in a freefall of his own. He was hurt and underperforming for the talent he had. He is never going to be 2018 Benny ever again. The contract he got this season for a good fielding LF who hits at league average is absolutely absurd.
True on both counts. But Franchy Cordero? It’s like Bloom said “Look, I’ll take anything”.
milt – You are 100% correct, Bloom sold low on Benny. He should have at least given him a half year to improve and then traded him at the deadline if he wanted to get rid of him.
As for the trade, we can’t pass final judgement on it just yet. Winckowski could develope into a solid pitcher if he keeps up what he’s been doing this month.
Josh Winckowski was also part of the deal and he’s been a pretty good bullpen piece this season
Bring Gardner back! Better in left than anyone’s we gave on the roster! Hicks has to go!
It was inevitable
I heard Yankee fans chanting 27! 27! 27!
Is that how many games back of the Rays you are?
Ah, the Yankee basher is back in another Yankees thread with more hate. How often do you ACTUALLY hear Yankee fans chanting 27? I hear Red Sox fans touting their four victories far, far, far more often. But you do you, Melchez, as narrow as your repertoire is.
Bruh, say what? Yankee fans (not all) always bring up 27 Championships. And Red Sox fans don’t bring up 4 victories unless it’s to counter some Yankee fan chanting 27.
Wikipedia always brings up 27 Championships too. Anytime anyone googles World Championships. It’s just how history works.
Well at least Wikipedia is accurate about some things.
Well, the dude above just brought up the Yankees 27 Championships, saying “Yankees fans always bring up…”
If the dude is bothered by it, why bring it up?
I see reading isn’t your strong suit. I was replying to Utah and no I am not bothered by Yankee fans bringing up 27 Championships.
You don’t have a strong suit.
Remember when Yankee fans were excited because Hicks was having a great spring training?
I said, “but it’s Arron Hicks? You really don’t think he will do well in the regular season do you?”
LOL, those were good conversations.
No, bacause that really didn’t happen. Maybe once, so now you’ve generalized that into this fanbase-wide chorus, because that’s what you do.
Stop it! Yankee fans were gushing over Hicks spring training results.
Nobody thought Hicks was suddenly going to turn it around because of a good spring training. Maybe you’re hearing voices or something.
I know several Yankee fans that thought they were getting a steal based on his spring training results. Which all fans do for their teams during spring training. Take a look at Volpe, some Yankee fans took his spring training and assumed he would be on fire right out of the gate. Even the media was over hyping Volpe.
I don’t even think YOU believe what you’re babbling about.
“Which all fans do for their teams during spring training.”
So what’s your point? Do you visit every teams fans and point out who they ‘gushed over in spring training? Or are you merely devoid of any actual baseball to talk about?
Who cares what you believe. You know I am right or you wouldn’t even have replied.
You care what I believe.
Otherwise YOU wouldn’t have replied.
You are 100% correct. Nobody has had or does have any faith in Hicks anymore. not only is he over the hill, but he’s lost the motivation to even try it appears. he probably hopes the team will cut him, so he could go home and spend his time with his wife ,while still getting his salary.
Heh heh heh…
We both arrived at the same conclusion.
Are you making things up as you go along? I think those ‘comversations’ are amongst you and your imaginary friends.
Remember all those Yankees fans making fun of the Sox for giving up on Franchy too early? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
No, because you’re talking about maybe one or two people mentioning it once or twice, and now you’re making a big deal of it as if NYY fans are the only ones to question the moves of other teams. Can’t make this stuff up. But you do.
Hal Steinbrenner has around 5 billion reasons to move the team if the city/state of NYC doesn’t build and pay for a new stadium for him by 2032.
Tell your buddy, Hal, to build a retractable roof stadium; NY teams prolly lead MLB in rainouts and I’m tired of elongated rain delays, wherever I want to watch NY baseball.
You have a better chance of the Marlins moving to New York than the Yankees leaving New York
bauers better wear number 24
The number of hours Bauers will be with the team.
Keifer Sutherland might be a better option
donald sutherland might be a better option and i’m not even sure he’s alive
(btw your team is fun this year yoshida might end up being a steal)
Donald can MASH.
don’t look now, but he’s opsing 1.900 (too obscure?)
Not at all obscure. He did Julie Christie who posted a 7.3 wAR back in that day!
Boone is the culprit for the LF debacle and the constant lineup “rotations”, which produce less runs x game. Bader when back in CF, Judge in RF and leave Cabrera in LF. Trade Hicks, and other sub 180 avg Of… and a pitcher for a good closer
Nobody in their right mind is trading anything for Hicks.
“Veteran Aaron Hicks has been even worse, posting a .135/.220/.135 line in 41 plate appearances.”
Hicks’ lifetime stats are below mlb average. He’s no longer even a good defensive player. And that’s looking at a large sample size.
Wait, Trivino is on the 60 day? But he’s so big. 6 foot 5, 235 pounds. How can he possibly be injured? BMI = 27.9. Hmm. Stanton? Judge? Montas? Donaldson? Weissert? All big boys. Gosh. Makes you wonder who’s next. Rizzo? DJLM? Nestor? Cordero? Peralta? Big boys. Big boys. Whatcha gonna do? Pull a hammy? Tweak a calf? Strain and sprain and pain and plain stupid to fill your roster with oversized “athletes”.
It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
Seriously, baseball has a problem. Size matters.
What does Estevan Florial have to do to finally get a call-up?! He even plays CF, which is a big defensive need, plus his offence looks great this year.
