The Yankees announced they’ve designated outfielder Estevan Florial for assignment to make room for right-hander Colten Brewer to be added to the big league roster.
It seems highly unlikely that Florial, once one of the game’s top prospects, passes through waivers unclaimed, so this is almost certainly the end of his tenure in the Bronx. The Yankees could look to trade him before he’s exposed to waivers, and given he’s still only 25 and has hit well in the minors, it’s likely teams – particularly rebuilding ones – would have interest in taking a flier on the outfielder.
Signed by the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic, Florial rose through the minors as a toolsy outfielder in the Yankees’ system. Last year at Triple-A, Florial slashed .283/.368/.481 with 15 home runs across 461 plate appearances, swiping 39 bags in the process. Unfortunately, those strong numbers in the top level of the minors haven’t translated to the big leagues, and Florial has hit just .185/.302/.278 over 63 plate appearances, striking out in exactly one third of those appearances.
In Florial’s defense, he’s never really been given an extended run in the majors to settle in, and so it’s entirely possible that a rebuilding team with less urgency could afford Florial some regular game time to find his groove.
With an off day immediately following Opening Day, the Yankees had obviously felt comfortable running a pitcher short and carrying three outfielders – Florial, Aaron Hicks and Franchy Cordero – on their bench. But with the team back in action today something had to give, and they’ll evidently remove Florial from the roster to make room for Brewer.
Brewer, 30, had been acquired from the Rays in exchange for cash last week, where he’d been in camp on a minor league deal. Brewer tossed 91 innings of relief for the Padres and Red Sox between 2018-21, working to a 5.04 ERA with a 20.3% strikeout rate and a 13.4% walk rate. He spent last season with the Royals on a minor league deal, but after working to a 4.76 ERA at Triple-A he was released in August after failing to crack the big league roster.

Can’t believe how many errors make their way into this writer’s pieces.
no one cares
The best possible thing for Florial, go have a great career with someone who will ACTUALLY give you a chance.
I don’t think Florial is going to have a great career with anyone. He’s a platoon/late game defensive replacement player
We’ll see Ronk, you could definitely be right. Why not just DFA the unwanted Aaron Hicks instead? Florial is much better then him. This makes zero sense. Whatever.
That’s an easy one to answer Captain. Hicks still counts $10MM against the tax for the next 3 years. The Yankees would rather try to get a team to agree to take on at least a portion of that contract in a trade than eat all of the money by cutting him
Or better still, DFA Franchy instead of Florial.
Good luck with that Ronk! I certainly hope it happens somehow though. Other teams out there DFA players that are owed a lot more then Hicks is still owed. Let’s just hope this season is a lot better then last season as far as Hicks is concerned. No way Florial doesn’t get claimed by another team
Cashman need to learn how to trade prospects he falls in love with. Florial should have been shipped out for pitching years ago. He had enough value to headline a deal for a stud pitcher on an expiring deal when they really needed one. But like Frazier, Bird, Torrens, and many many others he got nothing for all the hype they held. Cashman is a decent GM but it really is time for a change. Let him go to a midmarket team where his style will fit much better.
He had enough value to headline a deal for a stud pitcher on an expiring deal
============================
Florial was never really “all that”. He had 745 Ks in 2,257 ABs in the minors. That’s roughly 200 Ks/600 ABs. And without enough power or glove to overcome that.
By your logic shouldn’t he trade Volpe RIGHT NOW?
Florial is much better than Hicks? And you are basing this on?????
Show me the teams that cut players with 3 years left on their deal. I’ll wait.
Good. Wait outside.
Dirty diapers are better than Hicks, dude. Speaking of which… (sniff sniff), check yourself, son. I think you need to be changed.
Except they have shown the opposite to be true in the past. They ate $25m+ of ARod’s deal to cut bait. Releasing Ellsbury could have cost them millions as well. Their reason for not paying was pretty thin. Hicks is a sunk cost. They should just dump him instead of hoping someone else takes on $5m of his deal. If Florial catches on somewhere else and provides solid defense in a 4th OF role and Hicks is Hicks they will wish they had. Florial is young and has been hyped since he claimed to be a younger international prospect. He was expected to be one of the top signings until his real age came out. He has always hit well in the minors but as usual Cashman never gives struggling young players half a season to figure it out. Unless of course they light it up their first month or so in MLB. Some players just take awhile to figure out the Show. Josh Donaldson is a prime example.
You certainly qualify as ‘no one’.
Yet you care, that no one cares.
Well they should.
I care.
Wow that’s for saving everyone from that!
@Em 2- your a Yankee fan? Doubt it. lst time I’ve ever seen you on here truthfully. Smh

you know if you subscribe you can help them afford some spell checkers so they can reduce the errors. If not then maybe you can volunteer your time all day so your immediately available and handle the spell checking.
Who pays money to hear people guessing about things or getting info they can get from other sites? This place is cool and all but so is google. Should I go donate money to google too ?
Maybe you should mind your own business.
Must be so difficult for you to tolerate on a free site that you don’t subscribe to. Thoughts and prayers.
Ugh, yes, thank you so much for acknowledging me. You get it!
It makes me laugh when people complain about a spelling error. You obviously knew what they were talking about. It’s just being a dick for no reason. It’s a free baseball website, not school.
It caused you to waste a hundred or so keystrokes, eh? Proofread your posts, son. And mind your mouth.
Spelling errors are fine but what shouldn’t be tolerated (and I mainly see it in the nfl section) is when writers mention simply wrong facts. Some article the other day was talking about players who weren’t even on the team anymore. Proofreading really is a skill bloggers (or if you really want to call them writers) should have

@Ignoramus son-of-a-b
I don’t have hatred for anybody.
In fact, I’m laughing my ass off. At you! Right now! Thanks for the levity, loser.
You can spin it anyway you want, you ran your mouth I told you where to find me and you run your mouth some more. You should change your name to pu$$ymac77
You should change your name to Latina Heat, Nancy.
I know where to find you. In an alley, outside of one of those bars where the guys wear chaps. Earning quarters the hard way.
Talk talk talk talk talk talk. Is that what everyone from NY does they just run their mouth behind a screen? It’s okay people like you always get what’s coming to them so I’ll just sit back and enjoy my wonderful life knowing that you’ll mouth off to the wrong person soon enough and get all your teeth knocked out. Only a shame you’re too scared to come out so I could be the one to do it
Welcome to the mute list pu$$ymac77

Bro!! The Byrce Johson article posted has 2 typos!! Get on it like you do with Waldo!
Goodbye Estevan! You are free.
Free fallin.
Strange to see the Yankees give up on “a top OF prospect” for a Red Sox castoff reliever…Just saying…
Yes, a 5 tool prospect that can play every outfield position is gone! Yes, for a reliever that will be replaced shortly. Yes, this makes so much sense? Smh
Why not dump Franchy instead of Florial?
I’d dump Cashman instead of Sabian.
Maybe Brewer will be a Holmes 2.0?
Doubt it.
Holmes 1.0 wasn’t all that great yesterday.
Lot of teams gonna want to take a flyer here and I’d be surprised if he lasts past the first few teams in the waiver list. No way he gets past Rangers at #4, who don’t have a CF at all, but maybe doesn’t even get there. I bet a trade happens rather than waivers.
The Rangers have 3 CF on the roster and technically 4 with Leody on the IL. He might be a slight and I mean slight upgrade over Jankowski but I have never been a believer in Florial. Maybe last year they take a chance on him but really no reason to now. Someone will claim him if no trade is made. Maybe a team like the Giants who do well at picking up waiver players.
Having CFers on the roster doesn’t mean the Rangers have a CF on the roster, if you know what I mean. Florial may be nothing, but he’s got more talent in his pinkie than any of the Rangers’ options have in the whole bodies.
Yeah you must not follow the Rangers. If you did you would know that Adolis is a very good CF but even better in RF. Leody when healthy is still a better option. Bubba is just as good of a defender but is faster and can steal bases. Jankowski is the only one that he might be better than but he’s probably only in this team until Leody is back.
I will miss the days when Andujar, Frazier, Florial were all valuable.
Chance Adams was in that same timeframe as well. It’s honestly pretty surprising all those busts around the same time didn’t hurt their team success at the major league level.
Really? They are currently up against the tax threshold, and are limited on making any moves because of it. Their Rotation is on the Injured list and they are making room for Colten Brewer, because he’s cheap, not because he’s what they want. Failure to develop home grown talent is always costly. Two years ago they acquired Gallo because the same situation was in play, and the only way they could acquire deadline players was if the other team was willing to pay all the salaries. The Yankees have not achieved their goal, because they can’t buy all the fixes they need.
Of course, the brilliant GM traded away all his quality pitching depth for a six pack of Pepsi and a bag of Fritos. Oh, I’m sorry, Montas and Effross.??
Actually they were quality players. Yankees fan can’t make up their minds. They don’t want Cashman to prospect hug but then they whine when he trades away pitching prospects. that usually don’t pan out.
You whine every waking moment of every day. How about a nice bowl of ZipUrLip?
@jdgoat- Oh please the team you root for is a bust, so let’s make some sense here. Maybe your on the wrong thread again? It doesn’t seem like you belong here.
And the immortal Greg Bird
Hey mrperkins, you got a lot of family in NY? thinking I grew up with a ton of your relatives. Lmk
And that Judge guy too.
Can’t hit on all prospects, but nice when you do. Halle s few and far between.
Damn if you would’ve said they basically would have traded Florial for Colton Brewer about 4 or 5 years ago you would have been laughed off of this website. Trade your prospects, folks.
And we’re still waiting for the Blue Jays to be better then the Yankees… and that wait continues…
Award for the worst commentor on mlbtr goes to….
I must have struck a nerve I guess
No worries pal, enjoy 2nd or 3rd place looking up at the Yankees all year.
Wriggle your hand till the feeling comes back.
Just to get smacked around by the Astros every year since 2017. Wow must feel great for you yankee fans
Remember when he thought he was Aaron Judge? Classic
Better than what the A’s got for Pache.
A’s can give that chance to Florial… Plenty of opportunities in Oakland… Well, Pache didn’t work out but maybe Estevan would?
A’s have JJ Bleday and Cody Thomas waiting in Triple-A. Doubtful Florial would get a chance before those 2 if they were to trade for him.
Let’s go Jets! Florial is better then those prospects you’ve mentioned. That said the A’s should claim him, or trade for him. At least he’ll get a chance to play in Oakland.
Its amazing how many teams and fans give long ride to prospects who do not have the number one skill needed to be a productive MLB position player….the ability to hit a baseball.
here i thought the number one skill was stay healthy enough to actually play the game … also players like ozzie smith carved out a nice career, jose iglesias has been a productive player, JBJ, kevin plawecki has been around for years and been productive. If you can be a top defensive person especially at a premium position like center or short you can be a productive to the team. Not everyone can hit 300+ or belt 40 homeruns.
even florial could hit the ball but couldnt do it at the major league level yet. he also gets what a couple of days maybe couple of weeks at a time to try and adjust and even then its usually part-time. If he didnt hit in the minors then i would say he is not worth a flyer. With his defense and the potential upside i would give him a shot as 5th of if you have the space especially on the A’s and the pirates who are constantly rebuilding.
Jose Iglesias is a career .280 hitter. How did he get thrown in there?
iglesias has only hit average or above ops (100) 3 times in his going into 12th year and those were short samples oddly enough for al east teams (if my math is right its right around `100 games worth out of over `1000 games..
That’s because Iglesias is a spray hitter, not a power hitter. OPS greatly favors power hitters.
I hope you are not comparing Florial to Ozzie Smith, one of the best defensive wizards of all time, who had a 5.5% career K rate and a lifetime OBP of .337.
Florial Kd 29% in A+ and 30% in AAA. Those are not small sample sizes.
You won’t find many, if any, MiLB prospects who significantly improve their K rates once they get to MLB.
“Its amazing how many teams and fans give long ride to prospects who do not have the number one skill needed to be a productive MLB position player….the ability to hit a baseball.”
You specifically said to be productive you have to hit the ball yes or no? Ozzie was a defensive wizard and a hall of famer. and his career OPS has him below league average hitter.
If you want to use OBP how about Joey Gallo. Joey gallo has a lifetime 325 obp which is not that far off and strikes out at around 40-45 percent.rate. Heck Gallo was an all star and led the league in strikeouts.. I wouldnt necessary call that a hitter. You can just be very good defensively, take a walk and occasionally hit a homerun and be productive .
Also i never compared Florial and Ozzie. I separated Florial with a separate paragraph as a different thougt and even had multiple players between the two. I said he deserves a shot and could end up being a very good defensive player. and be productive as a 4th or 5th outfielder. Ozzie had no mention anywhere near Florial.
Ozzie could hit a baseball. Florial cannot.
Making contact has value. Striking out does not.
But its okay. If you think Florial can be a productive MLB player, be my guest. Obviously, the Yankees dont.
Actually, Ozzie was known as the All American Out in SD. His HOF career is a lesson in perseverance, hard work, and maybe good training. I remember him getting an ovation for his 2000th hit, a moment that would have been unthinkable in San Diego.
Teams make that mistake all the time. The Astros cut bait on JD Martinez then he turned into one of the best hitters in the league.
He needs to sign with the Marlins so the fans there can bask in the glory of Estevan and maybe they will bring back the Sound Machine.
Happy this kid is finally going to get a shot to play in the MLB. He’s already proven himself in the minors and has a plus glove. Either he adjusts to MLB pitching or he doesn’t but you’ll never find out with 63 AB’s over 4 years.
20+ years of this nonsense from Cashman and he still can’t figure it out. It’s almost comical at this point how bad of a GM he is in terms of development.
Judge, Volpe, Cabrera, Peraza, Higgy…? That’s over one-third of hitters on the current 26-man roster from their system.
Your math is a little off,YBC.
But my issue isn’t math. My issue is, if we have all this young talent, groom them and PLAY them. See what they have.
I like all the guys you mentioned.
Don’t minor league ABs provide insight? His minor league numbers need to support the possibility of success in the majors. In this case, the numbers just weren’t there.
I’m not suggesting he was going to be an all star but his glove played and he could have been a contributor. Could have been a good 4th outfielder for someone or even us. For god sales Hicks is still on this team. There’s probably 30-50 players who aren’t in the majors right this second that are better than Hicks yet he keeps getting a spot on this roster.
@yanks
It was such a bad signing and they wont just let it go at this point. its almost as bad as the ruf trade for the mets but atleast you got some productivity out of hicks and it only cost money.
“Last year at Triple-A, Florial slashed .283/.368/.481 with 15 home runs across 461 plate appearances, swiping 39 bags in the process.”
this doesnt support? solid average, some power and almost 40 steals with good defense at a premium position at the level right before majors. Can you define what you need to support a possibility for success? what does he need 350 average with 60 hr and a 100 steals with a platinum glove with both a mvp and minor league version of cy young perhaps in a season before you give him a real shot?
30% k rate against minor league pitching.
@stud
if having 30% strikeout rate for AAA is bad then why are they handing the starting job over to volpe? should they be sending volpe back down with his 30% AAA SO rate?
Probably going to argue a small sample size but does that give you more or less confidence.that Volpe may bust especially with all the hype around him and everyone expecting another jeter in the media with all the connections they making.
Unsettled position with IKF and Cabrera there? Is left field and 4th of settled with hicks even after bader returns? so yes i think he deserves an actual shot. He may end up another justin turner but for the outfield instead of the infield. He could very well end up another Pache or Ender Inciarte but you just dont know.
Volpe did not have a 30% k rate in the minors. He’s another Pache or Adell.
Volpe did in AAA last season with 30 SO/99 PA where the better pitchers are .. if you want to compare stops at different levels then Florial SO rates were about the same if not better except at A+ when he was getting shuffled up and down from the major league roster.
BTW i dont think you can call Volpe another Pache or Adell yet as he is still to young and hasnt really played. That and Volpe plays infield not outfield.
He = Florial. 30.4% Florial at 24 and 2500+ minor league PA’s.
So Florial is going to be the one player strikeouts are held against? I hate it but it’s par for the course these days. Top prospects/players in the game strikeout a ton. Cashman forced Joey Gallo in the lineup everyday for a season with the most uncompetitive at bats I’ve ever seen in my life outside of a pitcher hitting.
If Florial could draw 100 walks and hit 40 hrs with those k’s like gallo did, when he was productive, then he would be playing right now.
How do you he could or couldn’t? He got 63 at bats. If he were given the opportunity to fail as much as Gallo I would’ve bet he could put up a better overall stat line than what Gallo put up with the Yankees. It honestly wouldn’t be that hard since Gallo had one of the worst seasons of not thee worst season in the history of baseball.
Because he sucks. He has a 43%k rate in the majors. He couldn’t hit anything in spring training. He was given chances. He just cannot hit.
Why are you obsessed with freaking Florial? Usually, Yankees fans hate players who aren’t good. Why are Yankees the dumbest fans in baseball now?
You suck, yet you get let out of your cell once in a while. Others deserve a chance as well.
@Y4L I agree that last year he should have had at least a couple weeks of regular AB’s to show something considering the injuries and Gallo’s continued nosedive. But there’s nothing to suggest Florial is on the verge of being a competent MLB hitter.
Actually, I saw Mel Stootlemyre get 5 hits one time. Live.
Royals or Irates.
As a Pirates fan I’d be all for claiming or making a minor trade for Florial but the Bucs current 40 man roster has Jack Suwinski, Canaan Smith-Njiba, Travis Swaggerty and Cal Mitchell as outfielders who all need at bats/evaluation on top of having Reynolds, McCutchen, Connor Joe and Ji Hwan Bae soaking up OF at bats in the bigs as well. Personally I’d take Florial and DFA Mitchell or Suwinski but I have to imagine the Yankees will find enough interest in Florial to work out a trade and wouldn’t necessarily want the Bucs to outbid the market for him since they already have internal options.
Isn’t it interesting that a player is certain to get picked up by another team after being DFA, but obviously no team wanted to trade something notable for him. Florial not only bring prospect pedigree, but also defensive value.
Gruß,
BSHH
Well in fairness, every former top prospect that gets DFA’d is “certain” to get claimed by 29 other teams if you ask the posters around here. After 3 days, most of them go unclaimed because “prospect pedigree” and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee..
I think Boston could use them, I’m not convinced that Duvall can play centerfield for 135 or 140 games
Tigers pick him up. Put Carpenter in AAA and trade Austin Meadows in mid season for a 2nd basemen. Build some real depth
Carpenter needs ABs and Akil Baddoo is a better player and will be up from the minors before they ever grab Florial. I liked him a few years ago but he hasn’t improved. I like Meadows but I don’t think he fits the mold of what they are looking for. If he plays well I’d like to see them trade him AND his brother Parker for some impact upgrades elsewhere (2B, SS, 3B, C). The players they have at those spots now can be moved to other positions (Maton, Baez) if we get a young impact player, or replaced (Haase/Rogers, Schoop). The Meadows both strike out a lot. I’d love for the Tigers to somehow pick up a young future lineup mainstay like Garrett Mitchell or Nolan Gorman at the deadline.
I rather have Florial on the roster than Zack Short. This organization needs depth and potential to hit on high end talent…ala – JD Matinez type of player that needed a new change of scenery.
supporters keep waiting for something that isn’t there.
He strikeouts out way too much.
He is a failed product of launch angle, probably due to the fact that nearly every Yankee lefty prospect is expected to shoot for the short porch at the stadium, and they screw around with the prospect’s natural swing.
Perhaps some hitting guru can straighten him out, now that the porch is no longer a hitting goal.
How do straighten out recognizing breaking balls? Because that’s his problem, his swing is fine.
it’s timing.
The reason why pitchers are throwing so many breaking balls.
Every degree of angle to the bat as it comes through the zone requires better timing. We’ve seen it with guys Gallo, you never let them time it. They may hit the occasional mistake, but they are going to get eaten alive the rest of the time.
Florial just needs to go back to hitting the ball as hard as possible and for him that would come from leveling his swing.
He may still get fooled by the breaking ball, but with a level swing, you are more likely to pull it foul than miss it altogether.
Unclaimed
As predicted, although I thought he’d be cut at the end of camp. Lasted a couple days longer. A tool shed physically; no pitch recognition. That can’t be taught. He’ll hang around for years, bouncing up and down because he’s a good defender with speed. He’ll never hit MLB pitching.
Why wasn’t Hicks DFA’d instead? Florial is cheaper, and a much better player at this point. Disappointed in my fellow Yankee fans today. Smh
Florial is way cheaper but they still need to pay Hicks even if he’s dfa’d. The Yankees have more confidence in Franchy Cordero being useful than Florial.
@YBC- Ok, let’s see how good this Cordero kid is, maybe I missed something here. Doubt it though. Expect him to be released when Bader is healthy. Whenever that is. Smh
Cordero is no kid. i would have dumped Franchy and kept Florial.
Cordero has a ton of power but that hasn’t translated to game power (yet?). He can hit almost as hard as Judge and Stanton according to Statcast. He hits to all fields and is also a fast baserunner. Those are his positives. Hopefully, Dillon Lawson can tweak something and get Cordero to pull pitches more at YS to take advantage of the RF porch.
Don’t worry and Frenchy. He’ll be gone when Bader returns (around May 15).
Mi 2.
Me too! I mean, the dude can’t even spell Frenchy!
He is not a much better player. Florial is not even a major league player!!!!!!! You just hate Hicks. You would hate Florial if he played every day and struck out 4 times!!!
Hicks sucks sour buttermilk.
Florial. We hardly knew ‘ya.
I agree on that. McKinistry can go too.
was this an organizational failure i.e. they didn’t teach him to shorten his swing, or an individual failure i.e. he couldn’t learn how to shorten his swing? maybe a change of scenery will provide an insight. as it is, he had more than a thousand minor league at-bats to show he could make contact. one of those prospects you feel like you’ve been following for a decade. wish him well
More foolishness from the GM for Life.
Cordero has less upside than the five-skilled Florial.
Too bad his new talent evaluators Minaya and Sabean couldn’t talk Cashman out of bringing in the useless Cordero and sacrificing a kid from the organization who got buried two years ago for no logical reason.
What the hell is “five-skilled”???? Florial sucks!!! Now every Yankees fan thinks he is Mickey Mantle. I wish they would have put him in CF and then all you miserable SOBs could watch him hit .100 with 250ks and then you would have gone nuclear about Cashman. My god I am done with Yankees fans!!
@deej
You skipping your distemper shot?
Suffering from bloating, cramps and excess water weight?

In other news, LAA great Gio Urshela is 3-3.

The Yanks neither draft nor develop many young players. Other than Aaron Judge, they stockpile prospects until they’re 26… then dump them because they’d rather overpay over the hill has beens… Or in Hicks’ case, never-wases.
Cashman needs to be DFA’d. And take the analytics dweebs with him.
Volpe and Torres don’t exist? Seriously why is every Yankees fan the dumbest and most miserable SOB on the planet?
Is deej a nickname for degenerate?
torres wasn’t drafted. He was traded for and the cubs top prospect when NYY traded Chapman for him
Yeppers. Deej is a lame attempt at comic relief.
so???? the Cubs didn’t draft him either.
Cashman drafted more star players then Stick Michael did… and also never got to draft higher than 16 because they’ve never been under .500 while he’s been GM. clueless Yankee fans like YOU need to be DFA’ed
Kiss my ring.
Stick Michael had to convince George Steinbrenner that building a winner was easier and better thwn trying to buy an all-star team. Steinbrenner wanted to trade Mo Rivera for Felix Fermin.
They released him over Franchie Cordero? Colton Brewer?
That’s liked being passed over for spam and Ramen pride. Yankees must be absolutely done with him.
The Yankees hatred of Florial definitely speaks volumes. Now we’re judging a player that was a top prospect, on 65 at bats? Smh
I agree. Crazy Joey Gallo, Aaron Hiccup and Josh the singles admirer all get more chances to excel than that.
Cordero and Brewer both had super hot spring trainings this year and much better AAA numbers than Florial – Cordero is also able to play 1B, not just OF like Florial in case they need to replace Rizzo in a game that DJ is the DH…. Cordero OR Florial would probably gonna get released anyway when Bader returns… Brewer is also probably gonna get released when Trivino, Rodon, Severino and Kahnle return.
Florial should get a floral arrangement. Yankees themed colors.
Nats might want to take a chance on him considering what is going on with Corey Dickerson.
IKF in CF today.
Boone is a mad genius.

There’s always Japan!
Remember when Cashman refused to listen to trade offers for florial and preferred to keep him in the minors until he turned 25?
Or when he refused to include both chance adams and Frazier in a deal for Cole while also refusing to include florial, andujar and sheffield either?
Colten is right.
Kolten is Wong.
