TODAY: The Braves officially announced d’Arnaud’s IL placement. Tromp was called up from Triple-A.
APRIL 8: Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud will go on the seven-day concussion IL, manager Brian Snitker told reporters including Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. D’Arnaud was involved in a collision at home plate during the Braves match with the Padres tonight. He was removed from the game.
D’Arnaud has made a hot start to the season, slashing .355/.355/.452 with eleven hits over 31 plate appearances. Despite a putting up his best campaign to date last year and earning a trip to the All Star game, there was some speculation that the Braves may move on from D’Arnaud after they acquired Sean Murphy from Oakland. The team opted to hang on to d’Arnaud and his $8MM salary, instead preferring to slip catching duties between the pair and rotate them through the DH spot. So far, d’Arnaud has made three appearances at catcher and four at designated hitter.
Presumably Murphy will now handle an even greater majority of the catching duties while d’Arnaud is sidelined. The team hasn’t announced who it’ll likely turn to as a back up for Murphy, but they have Joe Hudson and Chadwick Tromp at Triple-A.

Has to be Tromp plus he’s already on the 40 man roster.

I thought runner had to slide or attempt to slide in this case the runner didn’t slide at all
olereb
I thought the same thing

You got to give a runner a lane when coming home, he totally blocked the plate…what is he supposed to do walk to the catcher and ask nicely please can you move so I can touch home plate ? Next time stop blocking the whole plate.
Braves Fan 85
he blocked the plate? ummm no he didnt. and if he did the runner would have been safe. did you see the ump call a violation or bob nelvin argue ? even after odor was called out for not touching the plate? dude had no business not sliding
Down with OBP
He left the whole lane open for Odor to take. When Odor decided he wasn’t going to slide the plate was not blocked at all. Now Odor doesn’t need to slide but sliding helps avoid the inevitable contact that was going to happen when he chose to plow into home (you can see him clearly lower himself and even lead a bit with the shoulder).

If you look at the play, you can clearly see catcher was blocking the plate as odor was coming home.
Braves Fan 85
if you look at the play, he never blocks the plate. odor has a clear lane. he obviously turns into the lane to make a tag after receiving the ball.

Justin’s the only one that said for sure. Bowman & DOB said it’s likely. They don’t know for sure as d’Arnaud is at the hospital and not the stadium.

@benjamin. Yeah I watched that video and that was quite the hit TDA took. Odor seemed to just run right thru him.

“Odor was going to slide head first before realizing that may have led to a head-to-head collision with d’Arnaud.
“It was going to be ugly 100 percent,” Odor said. “It’s part of the game. You’re just trying to score in that situation. I got hurt like that two years ago. Same play. I hurt my knee. I was on third, and I was going to slide into home plate, and the [catcher] was in the middle of the plate.”

They can make all the rules they want but these are big guys running fast and they have a goal in mind and things move really quick. People are going to get hurt, hopefully he’s okay going forward
cadagan
I think everyone knows injuries are going to happen. The point is to reduce injuries.
Amount of home plate collisions need to be reduced. Every year fanbases aren’t tolerant, until it happens to their guy.
Catcher has Possession of ball before the runner. Auto out. No tag needed. Prevent maybe half or more injuries $10s of millions in injury at very little cost except runs scored.
mushelbyman
suddenly, the IL is cluttered with Braves… 🙁

Not to belittle a brain injury, but forcing him into an everyday role might be the best way to acclimate him to the team and to feel comfortable. We will see

“D’Arnaud/Tromp” sounds like a particular presidential candidate being discussed in Japan.
geofft
Worth noting that d’Arnaud had a couple of concussions in the minors, plus at least two or three with the Mets. At some point, he’s going to have one and never get back to his normal form afterwards.
mrpadre19
There’s no rule that says the runner has to slide.
The only rule is that the Catcher can’t block the plate without the ball.
With the ball he can block it if he wishes…but the runner doesn’t have to avoid contact.
And Odor was not called out…the trailing runner was called out for “passing Odor”…because he touched Home before Odor went back and touched after the ball was dropped.
DCartrow
“Passing Odor on the basepaths? What will be the next rule change…..methane detectors?
PadreB2011
Odor’s run was called out on that play, not Kim’s…check the official boxscore!
TheProfessor31
Can’t wait until Austin Riley levels the Padres Catcher, since it’s not a rule…

D’arnaud couldn’t hack it in NY. He had to go to Atlanta where there’s less pressure
Only the very best players can make it in NY
MM.MM
LOL! Less pressure YET he won a W.S.?! And is there REALLY pressure in NY when they always choke and collapse?! Nice try, buddy!
SalaryCapMyth
You have to believe something like that because if you don’t than you might have to entertain the idea that the Mets did something wrong with him. I really don’t believe that necessarily but the other side of the coin is just as legitimate without any kind of objective evidence.
VINCENT D
So stupid.
MM.MM
Another Odor boneheaded play, for sure!
bhambrave
Travis didn’t have the ball, so it was a free for all. Everybody was doing the best they could, and it had an unfortunate outcome. The only real flub was Odor missing the plate.
Drew Waters Bat
Still don’t understand why he gave Contreras up for no reason. He is massively more valuable than Marcell Ozuna and his .083 batting average. 28 plate appearances and 9 strikeouts. He isn’t even trying. No way to give away Ozuna and pay atleast half of it. We now have a disaster at DH and catcher. I find it impossible that AA wasn’t able to get that deal done without giving up William. All winter we got “we aren’t pursuing him” to then look like beggars at the table. Milwaukee had Christmas again when they picked up the phone. Did he dislike Contreras that much because he wouldn’t sign an extension? Kevin Pillar is the best DH now in Atlanta? And if Murphy goes down, Atlanta is screwed.
NashvilleJeff
The Braves got Murphy in the Contreras deal. That’s hardly “giving up Contreras for no reason.” Murphy’s a huge defensive upgrade at the position and a comparable bat. d”Arnaud’s been “the best DH” in Atlanta. Pillar won’t DH over Rosario/Ozuna enough for it to matter. How is Murphy “a disaster at catcher”? He’s a top 4 MLB catcher.
Drew Waters Bat
Yes they gave up an All-Star. No way, absolutely no way possible that AA couldn’t get that deal done by adding other players. It was a massive overpay by AA. The deal could have been done with many other players but AA begged to give Contreras away. I get you are too thick to understand.
Benjamin101677
He Contreras was only an all star because his manager choose him; he wasn’t voted in or choosen his peers.
Drew Waters Bat
Benjamin101677- how wrong could you be? At the All-star break it was Bryce Harper and Contreras were 1 and 2 in value at DH. He was a better DH than what 28 other teams had. What are you talking about? Bryce went down with injury and that made the starter Contreras. He was going to make the roster no matter what bub. Do you even watch baseball? He doesn’t need votes when it’s easy to see stats wise he was the best starter available for that position.????????
NashvilleJeff
@Drew Waters Bat: I get that you get angry if someone disagrees w/your opinion driven rants. I get that you need to insult and name call those who commit the crime of disagreeing w/you.
Drew Waters Bat
I get you are a lefty. I get that I didn’t insult or name call you until just now. Asking someone if they are thick isn’t name calling or insulting, unless it’s true then my apologies on your condition, whatever it may be. You can disagree with me all you want. Not a crime to speak here. Who cares if I have an opinion driven rant? Here’s a clue, don’t respond and you can save all of these crap crimes you think you are doing or whatever you think you are doing.
Drew Waters Bat
I get that you have absolutely no counter points and can only suggest a victim card for yourself for some reason, probably out of habit. You are 10ply thick in your liberal head.
Drew Waters Bat
Murphy isn’t a “huge” defensive upgrade. Slight yes but we had a great catching core. A comparable bat???? Contreras’s bat is better than all of them. What are you talking about? His bat is better than Murphy, better that Travis d’, better than Rosario, Massively better than the drunk wife beater that is Ozuna, better than all of the bench bats. What a joke to act that we are somehow better without William Contreras than we are with him.
Drew Waters Bat
Atlanta had the best catching core. That Murphy deal could have easily been done with a prospect or something comparable but he gave up one of the best bats we had. William should never have been involved in the trade. Yes, he gave him away.
Drew Waters Bat
And if you actually could read it properly I said at DH and catcher, not that Murphy has been a disaster. I don’t feel that upgrade everyone likes to speak of. Alot of balls getting away from him. But now we have Murphy and no hitting catcher’s. And still the disaster at DH. It’s Rosario or bust. Hilliard is the the center field platoon so can’t use him. Pillar was supposed to be a bench bat and now he might have to start.
