5:34PM: Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters (including ESPN) that Bryant is day-to-day. The injury isn’t specifically to Bryant’s back, but rather to the sacroiliac joint and glute on the left side of Bryant’s body. “When he put his foot down and landed, there was a little bit of pain,” Black said.
3:21PM: Bryant left the game due to tightness in his lower back, according to Danielle Allentuck of the Denver Post (Twitter link).
2:49PM: The Rockies have removed Kris Bryant in the third inning of their match against the Phillies. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that “it appeared” Bryant rolled his ankle on a first inning strikeout.
Although it’s not yet known the severity of any injury here, Bryant has struggled in that department since joining the Rockies on a seven-year, $182MM deal last year, landing on the IL on three separate occasions in 2022 and appearing in just 42 games.
The 42 games he did play were hugely valuable to the Rockies, as Bryant slashed .306/.376/.475 with five home runs. He’s off to a similarly strong start to the year in 2023, putting up a .291/.364/.456 line with three home runs through his first 88 plate appearances entering play today.
The Rockies are off to a disappointing start, sitting at 6-15 in the NL West, and any missed time for Bryant would be a significant blow to the team moving forward.

What else is new, bro is always injured
flamingbagofpoop
Is 6-15 really that disappointing, seems about right.
rundmc1981
Disappointing bc they’re not ascending to the great heights of Dick’s “about .500” preseason declaration.
Alex Bishop
Rockies missed Tulowitzki and Gonzalez being injured so much that they had snag Bryant.
drasco036
I for one am shocked!
mlb fan
Another overrated Scott Boras, “generational” player, who cannot even stay in the lineup for 3 straight weeks.
flamingbagofpoop
I don’t know about overrated. He was really good until the injuries started to take a toll on him. The rockies definitely overpaid him for what he was by the time he hit free agency.
mlb fan
If you’re not durable, especially in your 20’s, you’re not good. Anyone can use injury as an excuse.
flamingbagofpoop
That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve read on this site.
mlb fan
Didn’t mean to insult your little childhood hero, Bryant. Don’t worry kid, I saw a “safe space” about a half mile back. Go there, get yourself together, dry away the tears and we’ll talk later.
King Floch
What an impressively simplistic, smoothbrained take.
Well done, mlb fan.
bronxmac77
C’mon man. Anita Bryant was tougher than Kris Bryant. C’mon.
VirginiaGiant
There are so many choices, don’t see how you can narrow down to that one?
flamingbagofpoop
I don’t need a safe space, I’m plenty used to stupid people, I just wanted to make sure you were aware how stupid you are. This is definitely a you problem.

In 3 of the last 4 years, he’s struggled against righties.

Scott Boras believes you are a “generational” player, who should get a 200 million dollar contract.
rct
“The 42 games he did play were hugely valuable to the Rockies”
He projected out to less than 2 WAR over 162 games, so I don’t know if I would say he was “hugely valuable”.

Stop it with your always reasonable comments. Get on the hot take highway like the rest of us. You’re making everyone look/feel bad.

Will he get back pay and if not is this payback for something he did?

What Is amazing Is there are Chicago Cubs fans still PO at the both TR And TE for not re-sign this guy.
And some of Cubs Kool Aid drinkers are also PO for letting Javier B walk out the doors.
Jim Canavan
Not me.
Only regret is letting Rizzo and Schwarber leave
Joe says...
Loving Rizzo on the Yankees. Can’t believe the Cubs moved on from him.
Steve Rogers
Offered him him the same salary but he thought he was worth more. Offered him 5 years with a bad back.
Cmurphy
Cubs did not move on from Rizzo, he moved on from the Cubs. Probably because he didn’t want to go through a second rebuild.
vanswanson
The cubs literally traded him, that would be them moving on from Rizzo
AmericanRedneck
Seeing those impressive IL list numbers, Cashman must be looming. Gonna dangle Florial and IKF for him.
Ejemp2006
Tiger fan here. We sell you Cubs back one Javier B. Only cost you beans, a lot! Maybe even accept lentils…
cornwhisperer
The Tigers were/are in rebuild mode, and saw fit to bring this guy on board. Yeah, what a great model for younger players to emulate. The ultimate “me” player
I don’t think the Cubs would even want this showboat back
drasco036
There is a reason the Cubs didn’t try to extend Baez, Bryant and Contreras.
Other GMs should take note, if the team that has them doesn’t want them, neither should you! The Cubs didn’t even kick the tires with extension for these guys in their last year and it doesn’t matter if you’re “rebuilding” or “reloading”, you want to keep quality guys. It doesn’t always happen but the desire to keep them is always there. Especially in Bryant’s case, if a team is trying to trade him 2-3 years before he’s a free agent, big red flag
drasco036
Contreras walked out the door. Bryant, Rizzo and Baez were traded. Baez had red flags all over him, KB did as well. Rizzo had a lot of concern regarding his back but the Cubs made an honest effort to keep him around.
As far as Cubs fans being mad, most fans are knee jerk reaction morons. I can’t tell you how many people told me Madrigal was the Cubs future lead off hitter and Hoerner was an injury prone piece of trash only to hear the next year that Madrigal should be released or re-assigned to AAA and his defense was awful. Same idiots hate Happ as well
PutPeteinthehall
Happ signed for 61m for 24-26. At this point in their careers KB can’t even hold Happ’s jock strap without getting hurt. Today aside Cubs looking like winners this season. Probably even pull a playoff spot to lose the first series. Big improvement by casting off KB and Baez.
Ace_
He has around 250 million reasons to test free agency if the Rockies release him.
riffraff
I’m sorry – I have no idea what you are attempting to say here. I’m used to your glib “hot takes” that make little sense but I’m totally lost on this one.. clue me in?
elmedius
No way the Rockies release him… they may however trade him for a few 35-40 FV prospects and eat most of his salary. That’d be more their style.
Steve Rogers
The Cubs might offer him a broadcasting job.
Cmurphy
Thought KB insisted, and got, on a full no trade clause in his Rockies contract.
Tigers3232
After this season he has $136 million left on contract through 2028. Since MLB contracts are guaranteed even if he were to b cut he could not “test free agency” til 2029. He can only sign for the minimum which would b subtracted from what COL would owe. There is also just next to zero chance COL would release anytime soon.
mattwild1
my giants may suck ass, but thank god we didn’t sign this guy to a massive deal

I think people are nuts. He’s played five of seven seasons, and except for last year his previous low in PAs was 457.
Four times he’s had over 600 PAs
drasco036
“Four times he’s had over 600 PAs” yep, four in his first five years and never sense.
It’s not that Bryant missed a ton of games, it’s that he is always hurt. He always has a nagging injury where he misses some time.
Bryant played in just over 100 games the year he hurt his shoulder, then 147 I believe, then in 2020 he played just over 30, then just over 140 again and then he missed a ton of time last year and he’s dealing with a back injury again this year, that’s why people think he’s injury prone.
The problem is also in Colorado, the air is super dry and the ground is super hard. I can’t that mixture boding well for Bryant’s injury history.
Halo11Fan
I don’t count 2020. He was hurt last year and got 586 in 2021.
Maybe he’ll get close to 600 ABs this year, maybe he won’t, but it needs to be a trend before it’s actually a trend.
This again stuff doesn’t make much sense.
drasco036
Well just because you don’t count a season doesn’t mean that season didn’t take place and he did miss 27 games regardless of wether the Cubs played 60 or 162.
flamingbagofpoop
You can be hurt and still play. Normally that causes your production to go down. You’ll notice that when KB started getting hurt, his production also went down, even when he was still playing.
Halo11Fan
That’s fair. But it’s not like he’s missing a lot of time….yet.
cpdpoet
Remember when there was a Bryant to Philly theme going on due to the Harper/Vegas connection…….. Gave me the chills….
Nothing against Bryant…..but like other athletes just didn’t want him in Philly (made a similar post @Buxton and got raked over the coals)
As for Bryant, am glad he got his money and the game is better when he’s healthy….
leftykoufax
It seems injuries are derailing a once promising career, tough break for both parties.
Arnold Ziffel
He could be wanting out so he doesn’t have to wear ugly green unis.

I can’t blame him there. I wouldn’t want to be part of the pit crew for the Quaker State Chevy either.

***sacroiliac joint***
Ah, that makes sense now. I’ve had issues all my adult life with that. You can feel strong as a bull one second, and be brought to your knees the next. Ret, Ice, Compression & Elevation. Any good chiropractors in Denver?
Jake1972
I am shocked!
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Sacro joints don’t really get better, they get managed. Which is fine if you are a data scientist, but less fine if you are an outfielder.
User 3595123227
Lol Bryant is injured funny sht……didn’t take long. Gonna be injured at least ½ the contract lol
leftykoufax
Laughing about an injured player and making predictions hoping someone stays injured shows your total lack of empathy. If your trying to be a comedian, please keep your day job if you have one.
User 3595123227
Are you stoopid?
flamingbagofpoop
Where did he say he hoped he’d be injured?
dpsmith22
Who is softer, Bryant or Stanton?
User 3595123227
That is an excellent question. I don’t know how to begin answering that one. That might be one of those questions that has no answer.
flamingbagofpoop
Bryant. Stanton is way more swol.
CrikesAlready
What a waste of money. A very, very small few players over the years openly said they felt bad about their contracts and offers to refund their salary have been made publicly. KB could easily do that, but he won’t. He needs that extra $100,000,000.00… inflation and a private security force because crime is rampant.
AmericanRedneck
A IL stint for being butt-hurt? Fantastic. Let’s pivot to the inevitable, his Yankee tenure. He seems as prime a candidate as any to be traded to the Bronx for Donaldson as a salary dump and join Stanton as perpetual mainstay on the DL. Since Ellsbury departed, Stanton has really stepped up. In case he gets healthy, Bryant seems like a logical choice to fill that void.
User 3595123227
Excellent comment. You said it all. Yes I’m serious.
AmericanRedneck
Thanks. Glad someone did. I felt like it accurately summarizes the situation.
solaris602
One thing’s for sure – once Bryant and the Rockies get this injury pinpointed, it will result in about a 45-day absence. If anyone can do it, Bryant can. He’s never been one to play at less than 100%.
MM.MM
Get use to this, Rockies fans. KB will be Band Aids’ best ambassador!

A lot of yammering and we don’t even know if it’s a 3-game issue or a 30-game issue.
