April 1: Rendon, Angels’ manager Phil Nevin and GM Perry Minasian all told reporters that they couldn’t comment on the matter due to MLB’s investigation. Rendon is in the Angels’ lineup batting fourth and playing third base.
March 31: Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon was involved in an argument with an A’s fan during the clubs’ Opening Day contest yesterday (video provided by Jared Carrabis of DraftKings). Rendon first accused the fan of calling him a “b****” as part of a brief exchange, in which he was holding the fan’s shirt through the guardrail. The All-Star then called the fan “a motherf*****” and quickly swiped towards the fan’s head with his left hand.
On the swipe, Rendon didn’t appear to make contact with the spectator, who pulled away. At that point, Rendon walked down the dugout. There’s no indication the situation continued beyond that, nor does the video cover any of the preceding chatter that led Rendon to confront the fan.
It’s unclear if anything will come of the situation. However, it seems there’s at least some chance Rendon could face discipline. Major League Baseball told Sam Blum of the Athletic it is “aware of the video and … now looking into the matter” (Twitter link). MLB hasn’t provided any further word, nor have the Angels commented.
The Oakland Police Department is also monitoring the situation, a police spokesperson tells Blum (via Twitter). OPD “is investigating a battery that occurred on March 30, 2023, following an event in the 7000 block of Joe Morgan Way (the address of RingCentral Coliseum). At this time, no victim has contacted OPD; however, surveillance video of the incident has surfaced. As a result, OPD created an incident, made a report, and is actively investigating.”
The Halos are off today. Rendon is expected to address the situation tomorrow when the club meets with the media.
Rendon has to take care of things a little better
Actually, what I am shocked about is that how close the fans can get to te players
This is baseball, not NBA basketball where there are Courtside Seats
I never knew Rendon to act that way… ever
He should make this right somehow and bury the hatchet
Would say roid rage but his stats don’t back it up.
He needs to talk to mookie about getting on the bowling tour.
The man has too much experience sitting on the bench after a strike not to.
Anything but Angels
I bet MLB will give the fan a longer suspension for allegedly offending women than they give to Rendon.
That would be the woke MLB and American way.
“Rendon didn’t appear to make contact with the spectator”
You missed the part where he had the fan by the jersey.
Why don’t we wait until tomorrow when Rendon tells his side. Everyone comments with out hearing Rendon’s side.
Because it doesn’t matter, obviously. Unless the guy actually touched Rendon first, then Rendon is clearly in the wrong here.
Yes it does matter. you would want the same thing if it was you. You don’t what he said to Rendon. Just because he’s a ballplayer doesn’t mean he’s in the wrong. BTW he did have his hand on top of Rendon’s
Winslow – Rendon repeated the B word because that’s what the fan called him. If the fan had called him something different, such as a slur, it’s not the B word that Rendon would have repeated.
Fever, it’s OK to use the real word here, in the interests of reporting. We all know what the b**** word was. Nobody likes being called a Bloom. So, as wrong as it was to resort to violence, thems fightin words…
It doesn’t matter what he said. Professional athletes should not touch fans over words. I wish there were less awful fans, but you have to ignore them.
What? If you had self respect, you’d realize it doesn’t even matter what the a random, nothing dude says to you. That’s really the key.
There’s no other side unless they both say it was all joking around. Rendon made physical contact and took a swing at him. Suspension coming. Such a dumb move.
Took a swing at him…how very CNN of you
You’re right, they should have said that he reached out with his T-Rex arms and was unable to do anything with them but flail around like Barney when he sings.
If the fan called him a jive turkey then the reaction might be understandable
Whenever I hear jive turkey I can’t help but think of that nice old lady translator in “Airplane”
Barbara Billingsley, best known for her role as June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver.
I never would have made that connection, thanks Joe!
To be fair on Rendon I don’t think he was going for a punch there but to hit the guys cap down but in saying that he has to be better.
Legally speaking, even the intent to strike an object closely associated with one’s personal is considered battery, even if you don’t aim or or make contact with the body itself. Say, knocking a plate out of their hands.
Going after the hat would’ve counted the same had he made contact. At least that lowers things from battery and assault to simple assault.
Why not just do nothing. And never see the guy again. You are a successful baseball player, you are a million times more successful than whoever that guy is.
Maybe that guy is right though. He is a b
It was a weird interaction that is for sure, Rendon didn’t seem angry, body language didn’t look angry or hostile nor did his tone. Even the little swipe at the end looked playful like “I called you out now get on outta here kid”.
Hardly, he should be suspended immediately. No excuse to ever come in to contact with a fan IN the stands.
Plenty of excuses. You’re obviously not a parent, or a horrible parent. Give him the suspension, ban the lardass rainbow libby with the canon mouth and move on.
The irony here is about knee deep.
You’re half right, there is no excuse but there is an explanation that could justify it.
Stepped WAY over the line. You Do Not touch a fan just for heckling you. Rendon deserves any and all fan derision heaped upon him, but the best way to shut them up is to perform on the field. Interesting to see how he handles this.
I’m not saying Rondon was right but call me a “little b@&$” and see how that turns out for you. Just because you’re “fan” doesn’t mean you can be a tool.
I do like in the video the “fan” was back tracking like the true little B in the situation. Probably had to go home and change his underwear.
And if you were an MLB player you would have a very short career. But at least you “kept it real”
Milton Bradley played in the league 12 years.
Ty Cobb played 24 years.
After beating the crap out of a loudmouth NYY fan. And I’m damn glad he did both.
You’re an ignorant son-of-a b.
Btw, the Green Hornet was a son of a bee. True fact.
That’s not very nice; you could have just said “screen name checks out”
You’ve come a looong way but screenname still checks out every Tuesday 🙂
It was a joke. No offense intended.
That’s why I followed it with the Green Hornet thing.
YOU’RE the one who picked your screen name. Not me!
Don’t write checks your ass can’t cash.
Hard to make a fair judgment of this without seeing what happened prior to him grabbing the fan.
I’d agree if there was anything to indicate this was a proportionate response.
I will NEVER understand how people can make millions of dollars playing a sport and let hecklers get to them at all. I got heckled in frigging high school and I just laughed at it. How are professional athletes bothered by this at all? Is it cause they have a lifetime of being told they’re the best or something?
I absolutely despise heckling, but professional athletes need to grow thicker skin. It’s embarrassing for Rendon and he’s no doubt gonna be suspended.
Imagine if he had called him a belly itcher.
He just wanted to shake the guy up a little.
Yeah… that’s assault and battery, on video. Rendon is grabbing the fan’s jersey for most of the video. Rendon could actually face some serious legal charges.
Depends on what your definition of “serious” is…
There’s clear intent. If the fan decides to chase a pay day or someone in the DA’s office wants to make an example of a visiting athlete, it’s not hard for it to become a felony. That video is pretty damning.
It’s not longer rich guy said v. fan said
Oh, I wasn’t even going with the whole rich guy thing. I was just saying depends on the definition of serious. Not sure of California’s laws, but out east here that’s a fine and some community service most likely.
He’s rich. The cops go blind in proximity to the wealthy.
So would I. In fact, of the cops gave the fat fan a nightstick shampoo, I’d buy them beers.
So much for Rendon playing the whole season. It could only happen to the Angels
I mean, we could be talking 100 games to a year here. MLB, MLBPA do NOT want their guys even thinking about ever doing this; and I’m guessing the punishment will be severe.
Hope you are right… but MLB wants this to go away.
4 to 5 games, MAX. I’m guessing 2 or 3 tbh… but we don’t have the clarity of knowing the entire story yet.
Somebody make us an over under line
+/-6! I got a Benji on the under!
WAY over. He’ll appeal, but once that’s over he is done for the yeear.
A year? What kind of mind altering drugs are you taking?
Well I’m fairness, we have seen some really ridiculous suspensions handed down by Manfred.
I hear Oakland has a crack problem, so I’d start my speculation there!
<—on a victory lap, who's got my Benji?
Gwynnings got the winning ticket by a mile. I am surprised! Personally, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal in the morality department; like, that guy in the stands was obviously being a complete jackass and sometimes when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
But I thought Manfred would pound Rendon into the sand on this. I was wrong!
I using that Benji to buy us beers so we can heckle some players! Cheers buddy
without video maybe it’s short. But the video with sound is pretty bad. He’s a top 5 salary guy in the league visiting a division foe. He needs to grow a spine
He has the spine. He needs to grow some skin.
Everyone is going to want this buried asap and I also don’t expect an appeal kicking up more noise.
Rendon definitely could have handled it better. I just hope the fan wasn’t heckling off limits stuff. As an adult, which that guy is, you should know what topics to chirp and what topics not to chirp. There are young kids at games and people there to enjoy themselves. I have a feeling this fan may have crossed the line (or may have in Rendon’s mind) but again, Rendon could have handled the situation a lot better. we’ll see what comes of the investigation.
Of course Rendon could’ve handled it better. But the ‘fan’ was there for one and one reason only. To cuss out a total stranger.
I put the onus on the spectator. Rude attitude, rude behavior – probably fortified with a few drinks. Let the spectator suffer the consequences of his behavior. Players are human, not machines.
Thin skin and from what have seen at mlb games at St Pete, not as bad as was back in days when stadiums used to sell as much booze as they could and didn’t care how plastered/abusive fans were. Players were used to taking heat, guys now have thin skins, just like most everyone and think some bubble surrounds them where they are immune to criticism, it’s total nonsense.
Imagine u ask any NYY, or Red Sock player whoever played in opposing park how they were treated and would be kid’s gloves compared to whatever Rendon heard/thought he heard.
Even hometown fans would give it to them, they pelted Reggie jackson at yankee stadium with raw hot dogs!!
Said it so many times people.. get out of that bubble and tell it like it is and take criticism when it is deserved.
I’m a Yankee fan from the days of Mantle. They have some of the worst cretins walking on hind legs. I was totally with Verdugo when he complained about it. As far as I’m concerned, security should run the obscene jerks out of the park forthwith. Anywhere.
I’m not paying exorbitant prices to watch drunk louts euin it for the rest of us.
Look at all this wisdom! You know this guy (bronxmac77) knows his s*** because if he was watching Mantle play, you know he’s wearing a diaper at whatever retirement village he lives in now.
You’re an asshat.
Law of business, the guy paying takes priority over the guy getting paid, especially when both are acting like idiot children.
Well, I’m not a doctor, but that fan in Oakland is probably an alcoholic. One of the signs of the disease is drinking alone.
What about Mike Trout and Shohei, the faces of MLB, walking right by and not intervening……
Trout was right there towards the end and there were at least three security personnel standing by watching right behind Rendon.
Still, they are leaders on that team and should’ve tried to calm him down at least. I guess I shouldn’t expect something like that from their locker room.
Anthony is a big boy. He doesn’t need Trout to be his keeper.
Because this type of thing is far from generally rare. I’d like a dime for every time in my life I heard words exchanged. It’s the grab that his Angels teammates should have responded to. Pushed him in and away. You go grab a fan and there no telling how that fan might respond to being grabbed. He jumps that rail and now you have an actual major brawl and incident.
I’d really like to know what else was said to cause the grab. I’d have to think being called a “b” or the like is a common occurrence for players.
Trout & Ohtani were also both hiding under the bench during the infamous brawl with the Mariners last season, nowhere to be seen. And Rendon was a major instigator in that with a cast on his wrist. Hothead, don’t know what his deal is…was he a fan favorite as a National?? Not even sure if the Nationals even made an attempt to resign Rendon or just let him walk.
He wanted the moon, so Nationals basically let him walk.
So if Trout and Ohtani don’t fight, they’re cowards. If Rendon fights, he’s a hothead.
That sum it up, Mister b?
Why has no one mentioned the fan was practically pushed to stumbling by two hands to the railing by someone calling him their son at the beginning of the video. That’s odd behavior right there. Had the incident that provoked the reaction happened earlier?
I’m surprised that they left the comment section on. Usually with all stuff like this, it’s off. Nice.
No women = no controversy
More importantly, no relationships = no controversy
Rendon shouldn’t have grabbed the guy’s shirt or swung on him and he should be suspended. Rendon wasn’t defending himself. He initiated physical contact. The fan didn’t react. Rendon then swung on the fan unprovoked. Maybe the guy did say something mean to Rendon- no excuse. That’s part of the game. You get heckled by fans. Especially if you’re a great player on an opposing team…or if you’re an overpaid player underperforming on a mega contract and you have a history of being a bit arrogant in the media.
Ever since he signed that contract, Rendon has been an embarrassment. He’s been essentially abysmal or just adequate or not healthy through three years of this seven year deal, he starts the year off going 0-for-All and it is clearly getting to him.
There’s no excuse to go after fans, especially for some generic heckling.
I think he went after that fan because he actually is a bad player on a bloated contract and he’s become sensitive about it.
The fan said stuff fans say. There are certain cities that are notorious for… outspoken… fans and that’s part of the game. It’s an ugly part of the game, but there’s character in it and I’m surprised Rendon let it get to him.
Last thing I’ll say is- I distinctly remember Rendon saying in the media he didn’t want to play baseball anymore going into free agency and he wanted to sign a short term deal of 3 or 4 years for maximum dollars and be done with the game. He signed that fairly long 7 year deal with the Angels because it was equal to the most money offered from other clubs and he picked the Angels because he felt that Anaheim was a smaller market with less media scrutiny, a quieter fan base, etc. He did say all this. He said this stuff leading up to free agency, going through free agency and when he signed with the Angels.
But the fact is he’s an overpaid underperforming player on a mega contract in a major sports league- he’s gonna get scrutinized and yelled at by fans because 81 of his games get played outside of Anaheim, even if Anaheim is this supposed haven of blissful indifference from fans and the media.
Yeah. Telling a police officer “he started it” doesn’t get you off the hook for this, even in the worst of neighborhoods. The best case is the officer doesn’t arrest you, but even then, school kids get suspended for weeks, and that’s just kids. Adults don’t get to physically assault (or attempt to assault) someone over words. I don’t care what he said. Words are not violence. Violence IS violence. This mentality is messed up. It’s not tough to pick a fight with a nobody. It shows your true colors, to be honest.
? T
Really dude? You’re from. Tx?
It’s called PROVOCATION. No one has to stand for being insulted or threatened. You can not disparage someone or their families.
Nope. www8.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/legis/nsw/c…
Provocation may mitigate something, but it never excuses it. You would just get a lesser sentence or get someone else in trouble too, but that doesn’t exonerate you. This is the law, not social media justice. Police officers just follow the actual law. Assault is still assault and is illegal. Otherwise, we would become vigilante cavemen.
There’s no excuse to go after fans? Was he spit on? Beer splashed and called a b____? Did Rendon have to dodge a thrown object? We don’t know the whole story, let the dust settle before we admonish the player for a 9 second snippet.
I said speech isn’t violence. Dodging a thrown object is self defense. That is not the same as reacting violently to words. No words in the world should result in violence, unless it’s an immediate threat, which I highly doubt. I may be wrong, but I will admit it if Rendon was in danger around all the security and all those teammates of his.
I hear ya deGrommer, just reacting to TTO’s post and choice of words. I would agree that no words should ever cause violence.
Odd. One way or another, Rendon will find a way to miss games.
As punishment, the Oakland fan has to continue being an Oakland fan.
Done and done.
And, to be clear, Rendon went too far here. I just wanted to make a cheap joke.
What a babyshite thing to investigate a player for
I agree… let the players grab and swing at fans. It’s a macho game… no brains or maturity needed.
Regardless of Rendon’s side, under California State Law, he just committed Battery against an A’s fan in Oakland. There will be fallout from this… of some sort. Considering MLB whines & moans about “DV is abhorrent in all forms”, interjects themselves into player’s personal lives, and even when those players prove the innocence… they’re still punished by Rob Meinfuhrer, Rendon should get an automatic 30 game suspension. You’re either tough on DV or you’re not.
It’s Oakland. The DA will drop the case, they’ll give him a stipend, and maybe even name a city holiday after him
Dude you really hate Oakland. What did Oakland do to you?
Nothing really. Some of my best friends grew up in the area but Bay Area people are largely unpleasant and typically have bad vibes all around. It’s the same reason why I don’t like the Giants and probably would like the A’s a lot more if they moved to Vegas
Alrighty. The bay has always been mostly nice to be at. I mean you gotta be aware of your surroundings like a lot of major cities, but aside from that I’ve been all over Oakland and I’ve always felt welcomed and had fairly pleasant interactions. Like all over. Into the 90’s blocks of east Oakland all the way up to the areas with tech millionaires.
It’s got some rough parts, but nothing so unpleasant.
The coliseum is in a bad area but Oakland is just really spread out and the stadium is too far away from the city center and Jack London Square would really need to be razed and rebuilt from the ground up for a Giants-esque city center stadium.
@FletcherFan You really need to stop, your ignorance is really embarrassing. Are you 15 years old?? It’s too bad they allowed comments on this topic because I had no reason to judge you on your baseball comments alone but now you’ve left me no choice.
The only sense in which this is domestic is that it’s within the US. Beyond that, there isn’t a domestic element. Of course, add a woman and sex, and you have a 324 game suspension…
What came of Oakland’s (I guess it’s LV now) Davonte adams shoving a cameraman to the ground post game in KC? I don’t think I heard anything about it after the days following and I live in KC
Davante is, um, oppressed.
Yeah, that’s it!
That made zero sense.
In fact, it made negative sense.
DV. Psssh.
Well it’s a sign Rendon has a pulse.
Awful-land A’s!
That fan was lucky that a guy who can’t hit was the one that swung at him. Another swing and miss by Rendon. That action should definitely hit his wallet!
Rendon will be suspended. He should have handled the situation better. Even though the drunk fan was completely out of line, even his buddy was trying to get him to shut up, that is no excuse for grabbing him by the jersey.
The fan will lose his season tickets. Which is probably a blessing considering the team he would be forced to watch.
The video on that Twitter account was cropped in length. The metadata indicates the video should be more than a minute longer. I would be interested to see the rest of it.
He SHOULD have handled it better.
Having said that, I hope he scared that drunk moron straight.c
Not understanding Rendon’s reactivity here. The fan guy is just another half-wit whose greatest accomplishment that day was tying his shoelaces without help. But no way Rendon should interact with the jerk at all, let alone escalate. Definitely is going to be some repercussions for him. And he’s damn lucky he didnt connect with that slap/grab/punch move at the end.
My guess is that he’ll get a 25 game suspension. But if he talked bad on ManFraud like Bauer did, he’d get 3 years.
Minimum 60 day suspension for Rendon. Maximum criminal charges.
Bro got advice from Bradley Beal.
There is video of this, I just saw it on Instagram.
There is a video in the article that was shown on Twitter.
I feel so bad for the 200 million dollar player that likes to sit out all the time. Boohoo the fan said something mean to you. Cry about it while you whipe your tears with your millions. These athlete’s egos are off the charts
I’d understand if it occurred in cell block D of San Quentin. Ive watched Americas Hardest Prisons. Bit surprised a player swiped at a fan for saying that. You got to laugh. The game just keeps on giving. You got some work to do Manfred !
Its gotta be tough to take all crap from guys drunk on two White Claws every day.
I bet you love Steve Cohen though right?
I’m not a Mets fan.
Bit if I were, I’d love Cohen. And far as I know, Cohen never took a swing at anybody.
Rendon has got to be more professional, there is a higher standard for him. I’m not excusing the fan’s behavior either.Mlb is gonna hit him where it hurts in the Wallet!
It would be classic Oakland (heck, all of CA) for them to go after Rendon for this while they let wild animals rule the streets.
it must be your experience being homeless in oakland! you just can’t afford to stay in anyplace in central or south oc!
Can someone translate this gibberish to english? LOL
Yeah, these folks driving Hummers and Escalades are homeless. youtube.com/watch?v=jlpMVQzdCC0&ab_channel=KP…
MLB can’t get the A’s out of Oakland fast enough.
Regardless of who said what, Rendon grabbed the fan’s shirt. Rendon is a moron and if anything proved the fan was correct calling him a female dog.
The only hit he has this season.
No, he swung and missed. Just like his career with the Angels thus far. It’s actually good he didn’t hit the fan, as it would of resulted in an injured wrist, which would have put him on the disabled list until August.
He will do anything he can to get out of the lineup.
If I got paid like $25 mill a year to suck at my job, you can say whatever you want to me from the stands.
Heh heh heh heh…
The Angels are just sad. This fan fight will probably be the peak of their season.
Fans run their mouths way too much. With no desire and generally no capacity to back it up.
But a guy like Rendon needs to realize he’s the one with something to lose. No sense in getting sued and giving a chunk of it to an idiot fan.
Good. We need more animosity. Adds some spice to the game. Baseball has become so cut and dry with feelings being easily offended. Miss the days of metal cleats sliding into the second baseman. I miss you, Ty Cobb!
You are the only one who misses Ty Cobb. You also never saw him play, so just stop.
I saw footage. I wish there was some of him pounding that fan into a blubbering pile of cake batter.
@StephCurryRetiresWith8Rings
Yep, one of the best players of all time. He played the game to max effort, unlike today’s players and MLB owners culture of protecting their players by playing them once every 5 weeks.
@Old York
How do you know these things? You never saw him play! You are a liar. A fact is that Cristian Pache is better defensively than Ty Cobb, because Pache is a way better athlete. What now?
Babe Ruth wouldnt even get out of A-ball in 2023, you old game guys are such massive weirdos for real.
Babe Ruth would murder modern pitching.
Sober up.
@ StephCurryRetiresWith8Rings
Read up on Cobb’s personality. He’s a rough and tumble guy. We need more tough, strong-willed guys in baseball, not guys who showboat everything but when the pressure is on, they crumble.
Yeah. We’re gonna need to see that video.
Okay. Thanks.
In fairness, though you do not get paid $25m, you are famously bad at your job.
I love seeing fire in players, it’s gotten too cute in this world. Can’t go too far with this but I loved seeing this out of Rendon and have new respect for him
That is very sad that violence is what gets you excited.
What a bunch of idiots!
It’s called PROVOCATION and MUTUAL COMBAT!
Guys being guys!
Our law enforcement and court system have better things to do than this! What a waste of time.and.money!
Guys.being.guys.
I can NOT.BELIEVE SOME.OF.THESE COMMENTS.AND I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND.WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR.CULTURE!!!!!!
TriLLIONS.OF.DOLLARS.IN DEBT,.ANY.WONDER.WHY???????
Buy hey
..the cops get OT and that 120K investigator gets paid by the hiur!
Go read the law buddy. You’re gonna have your world rocked
I’d liken it to the Ja Morant situation. Did it occur? Yes. Is it worth pursuing without the guy filing charges? Probably not.
Mike Trout claims to have seen Rendon and the fan jawing at each other but decided to keep walking to the clubhouse as the situation was escalating. As team leader Trout should have pulled Rendon away to avoid any type of incident but instead choose to keep walking
Perfect – Find a way to bash Trout in every situation.
I’m not bashing Trout, but as a leader he should have intervened and got Rendon away from the fan before the situation escalated. Rendon is a clown and will likely be hit with a suspension (and a lawsuit), fans can be pretty bad but no way is Manfred not going to take the opportunity to make an example of Rendon for putting his hands on a fan.
Quit bashing Trout.
That sorry excuse for a.leader Mandead better not.say a thing! Provocation
Mutual combat.
The fan didn’t file a complaint but I bet those cops and bunch of other people made some extra money…..
The angels are a joke, this is further evidence as if any more was really needed. The head hunt against the mariners, there a pattern here. Rendon is a bozo. It’s a fan, grow up. Act like you’ve been there before.
The head hunt against the Msriners?
Shocked he didn’t get hurt in the incident.
Also breaking news. The A’s had a fan at a game.
Fans should just subsidize then overpay to enter the ballpark, max out their credit cards purchasing garbage, cheer for both teams and walk away happy.
Maybe if he would have had that amount of energy at the plate they wouldn’t have lost to a triple-a team. Rendon slept through his at bats last night. Whata baby. Fans call players a lot worse than a b**** on a nightly basis
Yes, let’s investigate a guy for a storm in a teacup. ‘Suspend him for many games’, for what exactly? ‘He din’t do nuffin’…
The overreaction to something like this in comparison to a major crime that happened recently says it all.
Rendon should just be told to not get involved with dopey fans who run their mouths, and that’s it-end of story. The sensationalism is so magnified by social media these days it is beyond belief the way some people carry on about nothing.
Maybe the dolt hanging over the fence and pushed forward by an older man should get millions in compensation, I am sure that would be ‘fair and just’.
You can’t grab someone for calling you names. Even though I want to often times myself, I know I won’t get away with it. Then I’m not a fan of bullies. A pro athlete manhandling a loudmouth but obvious wimp is cowardly too.
@GarryHarris
All too often people at sports events yell too many insults, they’re dolts. The word “manhandling” is a little over exaggerated, he grabbed him by the shirt after the older man pushed the other man forward. I wonder what you’d say, or the others calling for punishment would say if the player was a different colour and the N word was used, would it be ‘different’ then?
I already know the answer.
I understand that sports people should not involve themselves or lose self control when around nitwits & loudmouths, but it happens from time to time. Tell me what happens in general society nowadays when crimes are committed, the criminal on most occasions is let out within hours or faces zero repercussions, yet there’s people here who want to ‘punish’ Rendon for this. The hypocrisy says it all.
You don’t already know the answer, you just made something up and decided it was the answer because it validates what you already believe. It’s a distinction few people seem to understand anymore.
Unruly behavior by fans can result in them being ejected from the ballpark. Unprofessional behavior from ballplayers can result in them being suspended and fined. Irresponsibility comes with consequences. That’s the way it works. No sociological theories required.
Rendon took a swing. Now, ambulance chasing sleazy lawyers will now have Rendon and MLB funding their Superbowl commercials.
@BlueSkies LA
1/ You do not know what I “believe”, but you may infer all you like.
2/ Show me the code of conduct for guests at Coliseum from Oakland A’s website.
The following behaviour is prohibited at Truist Park under the Guest code of conduct for the Atlanta Braves.
The Atlanta Braves reserve the right to refuse entry to any person or to remove any person who violates this Guest Code of Conduct.
*Betting-related, abusive speech and/or behavior that is directed at Players, Players’ family members, Club personnel, or umpires
Show me the same for the Coliseum and provide the link for the Oakland Athletics code of conduct for guests.
I didn’t have to infer anything. I simply pointed out that you made a completely unsustained assertion. I guess I inferred that you believe it. It’s also pretty strange to suggest that the Coliseum doesn’t have a fan code of conduct, just like every other sports venue, especially when you apparently didn’t bother to look for it yourself. So, for the google challenged, here it is:
Oakland Athletics Code of Conduct:
The Oakland Athletics are committed to creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience. Our staff has been trained to proactively intervene where necessary to help ensure a family entertainment environment:
Guests will follow the specified policies regarding carry-in items. Guests will allow any acknowledged representative at the gate of entrance to search items being brought into the stadium.
Guests will show their ticket when requested and sit only in their ticketed seat.
The progress of the game will not be disrupted by guests’ actions or unauthorized persons entering the playing field.
Guests will enjoy the baseball experience free from foul/abusive language or obscene gestures.

Blue Skies LA
Once again you’re making unsustained assertions that I inferred that Oakland didn’t have a code of conduct for its guests, merely because I asked you to provide the same as for the Atlanta Braves. However, you’ve pulled that up from OaklandArena.com, go find that under the banner of their ballclub, it isn’t there. You do not need to be arrogant & snarky about it, because as I’ve pointed out it isn’t under the Oakland Athletics baseball club, and there’s no link to it, the link is 404. As for using Google, you’re from the area so you knew what to look for, It isn’t under just “Coliseum code of conduct for guests”..

Good day.
The people sitting in the stands in that stadium have a history of trouble with ballplayers. There was a really ugly incident there about 15 years ago between the people in the stands there and multiple members of the Rangers bullpen.
1 incident in 15 years is your sample?? Wow, you don’t know to analyze things very well.
Hopefully the fan doesn’t announce that he is trans otherwise this will become a hate crime.
Lol. I was just about to say that Rendon must be a conservative. Otherwise they’d just let it go.
I’m not sure what comes of this. But I’ll say there’s a strong likelihood that walkway gets covered. Great idea…have drunk fans at the end of a game elevated above a narrow path for visiting players. Has this happened before? And why couldn’t Rendon just walk on. You can’t tell me as an MLB star (and after some lousy seasons) he doesn’t get heckled. Why this chump?
Rendon putting the smack down on the fans and asserting his authority over the common people
Thus proving the fan was correct.
No matter what was said, a player can’t touch a fan in a threatening way. Period.
Rendon should get a 5 game suspension.
He’s lucky his hand swipe missed because that would have cost him another 20 games.
The league will have to put out a statement condemning any MLB or MiLB players from ever physically engaging with a fan.
A disappointing situation for sure…. The Angels need Rendon in the line up and not back on the bench serving time for a suspension. Raw emotions are hard to control at times but somehow you have to find away to control them, if not for yourself then for your team. Disrespect seems to be common place in this country anymore, where it has become accepted simply because there are no consequences. Fan’s should not be permitted to behave in such a matter and players when taken to the brink should find a better way of handling their emotions. Again, if not for themselves then for the team. Very disssapointing.
Consequences certainly happen. I’m sure we’ve all seen unruly fans led out of ballparks. It isn’t automatic — they have to be caught, either by being reported by another fan or spotted by an usher or security. The fan in this case no doubt would have been escorted to the parking lot had he been caught. But the player mooted that possibility by behaving unprofessionally, and he can’t escape the consequences.
If Rendon had punched him in the face it would have been justified. I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often, given the prevalence of annoying loud-mouthed drunks at sporting events. And of course Oakland has plenty of these.
Absolutely no reason the player should be acknowledging might as well conversing with a fan during a game. No excuse. Fan has nothing to lose and player (and his team) have everything to lose. Makes no difference if it is a racial slur, a threat, no difference. Have the authorities take out the unruly fans. Distance yourself from the fools.
The funny part is Rendon spent all spring training smiling and laughing, the Angel announcers were always gushing about how “relaxed” and “happy” he was.
It’s like returning from a month long work retreat and then he snaps on the first day at the office. I didn’t buy into all the laughter during the games. He didn’t show any intensity. He just is either happy or rage. Weird.
He had a great spring batting like over .500 and finally appeared to be fully healthy. His positive attitude was likely genuine in spring. But that opening day loss was brutal; a frustrating loss as the Angels’ pen blew the lead at the end. It wasn’t a good time for A’s fans to be spewing out names at Angels players.
Maybe he’s on lithium?
Or perhaps should be.
Or Midol. Lithium or Midol.
Or Pamprin.
here for the “not surprised he failed to make contact” jokes
Perfect! I’m here for the “There were fans at an A’s game?” jokes.
It doesn’t matter what the fan said. Your representing MLB and the Anaheim Angels. He needs to be suspended for 20 games
The fan should’ve neen yanked over the railing and suitably thrashed.
Umm LA Angelsit’s been 10 years. Time to get up to speed.
an apology for loosing his cool a signed baseball bat (just because it was battery and ironic to me) and a small fine., assuming that is just something he lost his cool on, having a bad day or something.
Sure I hope he regrets it but that’s not good enough. There’s this thing called accountability. It sucks, but baseball needs to send a message. I just watched a video he was way, way over the line.
What about Tommy Pham? Didn’t he wait for a fan who talked trash and challenge him to a fight?
In fact, Tommy Pham has had a few “unsaid” negative interactions with fans and has faced no disciplinary actions.
Rendon, yes was more aggressive but nothing happened at the end of the day!
Let’s admit it, you get fans have gotten a lot more ignorant and reckless. Think of the last couple of years. The incident at Yankee stadium, San Diego with the throwing of junk on the filed…just to name a couple of situations. If crap like this continues to happen players will snap.
I’m not making excuses for the players and I am not generalizing all fans. I am just trying to give a different perspective.
Plus, getting beat by Oakland on opening day in Oakland completely sucks!
Just like getting routed by the Rockies at home on opening day!
You need to have a line in the sand. Physical contact of any kind is a good clear line. You let a shirt grab go and then what do you do if the next one is a chest push ? You deem that one ok and the next one is a face palm…..
I believe we draw the line at face palm. Two or three facepalms.
“You gonna do something? Or just stand there and bleed?”
I’ve been with guys who deserved a smack in the face. That’s just the way it is with alcohol and fans who think they have special privileges..
Agree. I usually ask security to deal with alcohol fueled ash hats.
Everyone. Just google

I follow my A”s , and I can say 100% that they’re a bunch of jaxkasses . That go there to make stupid noises. , or say dumb stuff. . The only stadium where you would have to listen to a loser say Lets Go Oakland for 3 hours . The video was funny to me . Don’t bother players .
Of course the real shocker is that there were fans at an A’s game.
He grabbed the guy’s shirt after being called a b**** by him. This was not a crime, or at least it should not be. In fact, I say that the guy got off light. If you don’t know any better than to call a grown man a b****, then you deserve whatever comes back at you.
In the eyes of the law that’s assault. If a word hurts your feelings to elicit a physical response find a hobby.
Or at least wait till you’re out of camera range.
Apologize to the drunken fan. Invite him down to the dugout and Offer him some signed merch. Get him out of cell phone range. Then work him over until he bleeds Angel red from every orifice.
Aloha.
🙁
My guess is he’s not interested in anything signed by Rendon
Your guess is a good one.
Maybe a curbstomping would make him change his mind.
My guess is some people need to examine their own souls. They’re going to need a microscope.
Start with loud drunk fans with obscenity laced tirades at total strangers.
🙁 Start with yourself.
Enough with the morality plays.
It’s getting tired.
🙁 🙁
Didn’t you know, Blue Skies LA could cast the first stone.
🙁
Yeah, I heard you the first time Ike.
Angels are spanking some Oakland A’ss today. 11-0!
Pretty sure this guy can press charges. No matter what a fans says you can put your hands on them man
Great civil discourse, folks! Nobody slapping anyone despite philosophical differences. That’s what we’re all about!
Over 25 years ago, the late Ken Caminiti endured abuse by a loudmouth fan at a spring training game. After a couple of innings, he was removed. He showered, dressed, and quietly took a seat behind the loudmouth. Then he asked him if people came to the fan’s place of employment and yelled obscenities at him. The loudmouth fan was strangely quiet.
There is no line of work where you can attack a customer for being a loudmouth. Are loudmouths unreasonable disgusting people? Of course they are. You just can’t lower yourself to their level. I’m thinking that if you’re being paid millions of dollars like Rendón is you should be keenly aware of that.
Despite Cammy’s flaws, all of his teammates loved him and spoke very highly of him.
The point is that Cammy, who was built like a linebacker, chose the high road. While simultaneously scaring the beejeezus out of a formerly obnoxious loudmouth.
Angel’s brass should put Rendon on waivers. Release this POS. Not worth a roster spot. Drury can pay 3B as well as Urshela.
Worst take in MLBTR history.
Rendon was suspended last year for his part in a baseball brawl. You can argue about who instigated it but I believe the jomboy recap showed Rendon throwing the first punch.
Rondon threw first but it was obvious if he didn’t he’d have been hit first.
Dude walked to the Angels dugout specifically to fight. And Rondon only had one hand. Other hand was in a soft cast after surgery.
He kind of had to swing first or he’d have gotten clocked.
Winkler was headed towards the dugout. Rendon ran onto field and he had a cast. Theres no reason for him to run out..was not threatened. There was plenty of other Angels blocking path to dugout that’s why he received a lengthy suspension then. Does show his temper. You can google fight and see it.
Rendon was at the top of the steps and took perhaps one or two steps to get on level ground. He was no more than a couple feet away from the dugout.
Winker was dead set on fighting someone. Rendon just happened to be first. If it wasn’t Rendon, Winker would’ve punched whoever he got to first.
Blaming that on the guy who moved two feet instead of the hothead who walked across the entire field screaming at the other team is ridiculous.
Sometimes the fight comes to you. And when it does, you might as well swing first.
I’m not blaming it on the guy I’m saying Winkler was not coming specifically for Rendon. You make it sound like he was on a bead forhim. That is not case..yes Winkler blew up and wanted fight but didn’t pick out Rendon. Issue was over being hit with bal and was building over two games.Rendon wasn’t specific threatened. He could have stayed in dugout and been fine but he chose to come out and join fight with a cast on.
“He called me a b***h. So I b***h-slapped him. What’s the problem?”
– A. ‘Rendition’ Rondon
I remember SI did an article years back about A’s fans. ! Yankee player said a A’s fan yelled at him. “What ya call a mouse with a weak bladder? Mickey Rivers”
Rendon should be in prison for grand theft. Worst contract in baseball.
Some of these players are great athletes and – yes – actually bad people.
I was there at the game Rendon flipped out; if I had the decision making Rendon would be suspended rest of the season.
It can’t be grand theft if both responsible parties signed the contract.
Must suck making millions and being called a b-tch.
Rendon personifies bad baseball contracts and is aloof, almost smug. So he is a focus of fan frustration and contempt. That’s the explanation, not justification.
Mo Vaughn…same type of situation.
“Only my wife gets to call me that!!!”
Morally, I have zero problem with this. If you are going to call another man a b****, I have no issue with him grabbing your shirt and reminding you that no, he is not, at all. But this is unfortunately not the world we live in and he’s probably at risk for battery charges here.
Hope he gets a warning and more than anything, I hope the fan gets absolutely no compensation whatsoever.
Rendon is just the latest in a long line of really awful free agent signings by the Angels. Though he has proven to be both brittle and a reprobate he is not alone. Consider:
Josh Hamilton
Vernon Wells
Anthony Rendon
C.J. Wilson
Trevor Cahill
Luis Valbuena
Cody Allen
Matt Harvey
Julio Teheran
Joe Blanton
Gary Matthews Jr.
Woof. Thats alot of Artie’s money up the spout.
When Angels fans want to know why they have not improved in recent years…look no further.
Good list. Half could have been avoided with a psyche eval in advance.
Rendon would be headed to the IL with a left eye contusion if he put his hands on me that way.
Sure thing, Rambo
Everybody is a badass.
Until I show up.
Heh heh heh…
Whatever you do, don’t take Jim Rice’s hat. He will come for it.
Honestly, fans who are jerks need to be banned from the sacred grounds of the ballpark. There’s no place for their crap.
That said, we will never know what really happened when the article starts out with the words “MLB Investigating”.
“Here comes the pizza!”
Classic.
The obnoxiousness of the modern fan vs. today’s generationally thin-skinned athletes aside, Rendon has to be smarter than to put his hands on, and swipe at a knuckled fan, regardless of what he was called. Rendon has hundreds of millions of dollars to his name. The other dude probably has enough to hire a lawyer.
Good for Rendon! He scared the crap out of that out of shape loud mouthed fan. That alone is worth the chump change he’ll pay in a fine. If you’re not ready to back up your words you better keep your mouth shut.
Fkn-ay.
Honestly when I saw this, it looked like it was nothing but a player /fan interaction. Rendon was smiling and laughing.
The Angels should settle with the loudmouth fan like DiNiro in Casino.
“Arright, you can get cash after we smash your hand with this bat, or you can walk out of here with nothing. But you can’t have both.”
“I just wanna get out of here. I made a mistake.”
“Damn right. Catch you here again we’ll smash you AND your friends. Now get outta here. Don’t come back.”
“Thank yo. Thank you Mister Rendon.”
HOME RUN!
Angels 3, A’s zip.
Hit it for Anthony. BaZINGA!
Saw the incident. Rendon didn’t look mad. This issue is a nothingburger that will fade when that embarrassed fan disappears into the crowd.
I hope you’re right.
You are correct.
TROUT-A-HERE!
Sho-go-YARD!
Back to back jacks.
That oughta shut up some loud A’ss fans.
Don’t forget he is away from his daughter who last week broke her arm and he flew back home to see her in Texas.
There is a possibility that the stress of losing the game coupled with not being able to transfer his great Spring into the regular season and missing his injured child has been building up inside and he let out his frustration on that annoying fan.
He needs to apologize and admit his fault and agree to meet with aanger management counselor.
Admit this isn’t who you are and your embarrassed about the incident.
Doing this now will allow him to get ahead of the MLB investigation and possibly reduce the severity of the eventual suspension.
Get this quickly over with and get back to bringing the Angels A Championship.
Trout & Ohtani with back to back jacks. And no irate Angels handing out fan smacks! A good day!
