April 12: The Tigers announced today that Manning has been placed on the 15-day injured list with infielder Tyler Nevin recalled to take his place on the roster.
April 11: Tigers starter Matt Manning fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during tonight’s loss to the Blue Jays, the team informed reporters (including Chris McCosky of the Detroit News). The right-hander was in a walking boot in the clubhouse.
Manning sustained the injury on his final pitch of the start. An Alejandro Kirk comebacker bounced off his foot and rolled to Spencer Torkelson at first base. Manning was able to scramble to first base to receive the throw from Torkelson and record the putout. That likely would’ve ended his start regardless, as he finished the sixth inning on 85 pitches. It wasn’t until after the game that it became clear Manning had been injured on the play.
The 25-year-old downplayed the issue after the game, stating he hoped he’d be back relatively shortly (via Jason Beck of MLB.com). It’s hard to imagine he won’t require at least a brief stint on the 15-day injured list, though, which would represent another setback in his young career. Manning lost most of the first half of the 2022 campaign to shoulder inflammation. The foot issue is a fluke incident that isn’t likely to present the same kind of overarching concern of last year’s shoulder problem, but it seems likely to cost him some time.
A former ninth overall pick, Manning has long been viewed as a potential core piece in Detroit. The Tigers anchored their rebuild around young pitching, with Manning joining Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and 2020 third overall pick Jackson Jobe as hopeful impact starters. Unfortunately, all four of those hurlers have battled significant injury issues. Mize could miss the entire season recovering from last summer’s Tommy John surgery. Skubal is on the 60-day injured list after undergoing a flexor tendon repair last August. Jobe could miss the majority of the minor league campaign due to lumbar spine inflammation.
The Tigers have turned to a starting five of Matthew Boyd, Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull, Manning and Joey Wentz to open the year. Righty Michael Lorenzen was signed to a free agent deal to hold down a job. He started the year on the IL with a minor groin strain but is expected to be reinstated later in the week after making a rehab start for Triple-A Toledo last Saturday. Should Manning require an IL stint, the Tigers could plug Lorenzen into his spot and keep Wentz in the starting five.

Can’t catch a break. Jeez.

Are we in LMAO territory yet? What a club we got.

Great- just what they needed…
At least they’re finally done with Miguel Cabrera’s sorry ass after this season.
goalieguy41
And you could do better?
Motor City Beach Bum
Did you change your user name again? I thought that was you but you weren’t slamming everyone left right and center. At least you’re consistent. I keep trying to think of a long time Marlin we could slam but can’t come up with anyone given the fire sales they have every time they start to do well…which includes getting fleeced for Cabrera
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I kinda wish they would bat Miggie first, every game, and then remove him if he is not expected to be in the line up that day. Have you ever heard stories of when Mantle retired?
Bill Freehan saying, “Here it comes,Mick, fastball right down the middle”…… – HR!
Baseball players used to be pretty cool about stuff like that. It’s a show. They love the fans and the fans love them.
The Tigers are such a powerhouse this year, such a threat, I could picture stuff like that happening!
It would be pretty cool.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
“Here it comes, Mick…fastball, right down the middle”…..BOOM!…….-HR!
Bill Freehan was ALWAYS one of EVERY TIGER FANS’ FAVORITE! They were way cool guys and true men.
avenger65
I thinkiggy deserves to go out like the hof’er he is. If the pitcher wants to groove one down the middle and the catcher tips him off, I would be OK with that. It didn’t tarnish Mantle’s place in history and it won’t to Miggt’s. This is the team of Ty Cobb who I consider the best player of all time. Although if Cobb knew a pitcher was gonna throw one down the middle of the plate for Cobb to hit Cobb would’ve probably beaten him to a pulp.
Ace_
9’er is still considered Mr. Marlin, fyi. Jeffrey Conine.
avenger65
These attacks on anyone who’s ever played baseball is Ace’s – I mean deGro. Texas Ranger – way of getting attention. The best way to get back at him is to ignore him. Then he’ll REALLY throw a tantrum, which should also be ignored. Let’s keep this site for the more informed fans.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I believe it’s called sarcasm..and it did spark a pretty good conversation….since we have so little Tiger TR news….hey… it is a way to start a thread…..this article is about Mannings’ injury…..
GarryHarris
DET would be best served just releasing Miguel Cabrera the way LAA released Albert Pujols. Cabrera will be picked up by a higher visible team in contention. DET can move on. I see Cabrera as a distraction.
Jurassic Carl
Luckily your not a GM. Distraction? He’s a first ballot hall of famer having his final season. What are you even talking about? Cut him at 40? You act like he didn’t win a triple crown with Detroit the last active MLB player to do so….since Yaz. Go back to watching volleyball it’s more suited for you.
sergefunction
Really. Attacking the messenger for speaking truth. How original.
Cabrera disrespected the game by getting dreadfully out of shape years ago once he got his.
Look at the Cabrera-like Padres contracts and wonder if the character of those players will lead to Cabrera-like results. Hope not for the franchise and fans of that club.
Have you seen the guy play in recent years? Apparently not, Mr. Volleyball. It’s been a 6-7 year curtain call which has evidently led his owner to give up and surround the guy with minimum contracts out of spite, disgust, greed or whatever.
You want to see Yaz still suiting up at age 83? Why not? HOF. Triple Crown.
The whole thing is a sorry mess and you crush a disappointed fan for pointing it out? Nonsense.
stymeedone
Yeah, just like the Yankees would have been better off without Jeter his final year. Just like Jeter, Cabrera isn’t going anywhere.
sergefunction
Obviously, but don’t shovel the manure that he remains some valued asset.
His bat speed is as if he’s swinging under water. His foot speed is slower than that, and his glovework hasn’t been league average for a very long time.
He’s at least 280 lbs, which is a total lack of … everything.
But, duh, they won’t be releasing him but reasonable fans can dream. Why show respect to someone who has ripped off and disrespected the franchise if not the game for years.
kylek58
Can we catch a break? It’s just one blow after the next.
LordD99
I feel like MLB is running out of players and everyone is on the IL. I’m sure that’s wrong, but I’m going to start loosening up my arm just in case help is needed.
rd42
It’s not going to be a short stint, as in 15 days. I’m literally out right now with the same injury. There is a high chance of re-injuring it if you don’t let it heal.
He’ll be able to keep his arm moving to an extent. He’ll just be in a boot. Ive played catch and long toss with my son. But I just hit the 6 week mark. Then have to build it back up and a bullpen or two. Hes going to miss a minimum of 6 weeks. Probably closer to 8.
ThonolansGhost
With a broken pinky toe? I doubt he’ll miss a month.
ThonolansGhost
Nevermind, I had just read an article that stated Manning had broken his toe. Now I realize that he broke the bone in his foot that leads to the toe. I have no idea how long it will take to heal that sort of injury.
waitsfornoone
I broke the fifth metatarsal on my left foot in my early 30’s. It still took eight weeks in a boot before I could begin to strengthen that leg.
I realize he’s in his 20’s and is a world class athlete, buts still …
Steve Lawrence
I have a hunch attendance will plummet this season. Crappy team fatigue.
GarryHarris
If Matt Manning is to contribute to the future of the Tigers, he doesn’t need to be wasting his time pitching for the year’s team anyway.
C Yards Jeff
To your point, I didn’t get why they actively used him as a starter on the back half of last year. The season was lost. Thought maybe better to do simulated games mixed in with work out of the bullpen to build back arm strength.
JrodFunk5
Becuase he was in his 7th year with the franchise. He has to be in the majors at some point.
stymeedone
Young pitchers don’t arrive from the minors ready to go 200 innings (Hell, managers don’t seem to let them, anyway). They still have to work up the stamina to start 32-35 games. If they don’t take a step this year, how will they be ready when the season matters.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Keeping healthy should be HIS top priority. He should not let the Tigets hurry him back until he is not only healed but also STRONG. I hope he gets advise from his family and his agent to be looking out for his own best interests for the LONG TERM.
Since, I am such an expert, I hope Meadows keeps.busy by immersing himself in PLAYING BASEBALL, not parausing around inside his head. He is obviously a smart guy. Most people don’t have the intelligence to do that and I don’t think people.can handle it anyways. That’s why we generally don’t do that.
Jobe needs to take great care of his back. Don’t let them rush him! You know how young guys are……
tigerdoc616
6-8 weeks out will be likely. That is a freak injury. I have seen people do that just walking or after a night of dancing. But yea, he’ll need time to heal then time to get back in pitching shape. Lorenzen was set to come back soon and Wentz can stay in the rotation.
BSHH
Lorenzen was very bad in his rehab stint AAA game recently. If I were the Tigers GM, I would rather call up Faedo for the next start to let him gather valuable MLB experience and give Lorenzen more time. Re-shifting Alexander into the rotation would be another option, but I prefer him as a reliever.
Gruß,
BSHH
weaselpuppy
Tigers need robot pitchers, not robot umps.
Also, Javier Baez is literally the worst hitter in MLB as of today. .111/.179/.111 -16 OPS+
What in the holy hell happened to this guy? Juice run out? Supply chain issues?
BStrowman
Javy Baez was a terrible signing from day 1. He’s wildly inconsistent because he struggles to make contact. Bad Baez is really bad.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
You have to wonder if Hinch spending time together at his ranch in Fla. was a good idea. I have to say 100% unequivically, I AM 100% JEALOUS of owning a ranch in Florida. So, maybe Baez has met his goal and this contract takes him all the way through MLB retirement payments. I probably shouldn’t say anything other than I wish I owned a ranch in Florida.
I hope he heats up. Tiger fans are not in the habit of booing. Just plain out not playing him at all for a long period….say two weeks to a month or more would be really hard for a personal friend to do. That would shock and embarass him. I’d bet someone got inside his head as well.
Hoping he heats up!
stymeedone
Due to his low average and low on base, Baez should not be batting higher than 7th in the lineup. At least he seems to be fielding better so far this year. Maybe if they start giving Kreidler some starts at SS, and sit Baez, he will choose to opt out, to find more playing time. If they keep playing him, he will stick around for the money. I don’t think anyone believes he will have the positive type of year that would get him to opt out on his own.
ThonolansGhost
I haven’t given up on Baez yet. I still think he can potentially provide 3-5 bWAR per season for the next few years.
gotigers68
And so it begins……
Motown is My Town
I originally stated 68 wins, but after watching them so far this season I’m reducing my win total prediction to 59. Unfortunately this team can’t hit, can’t pitch and has no bullpen or defense.
Can we just do the NFL draft and move forward w/ football training camp so us Detroit fans can begin focusing there since the baseball season is already over in Detroit????
ThonolansGhost
I still say they’ll get about 75 wins, but they need to show substantial improvement for that to happen.
ThonolansGhost
At least Nevin gets a chance to prove himself, let’s hope he can take advantage of this opportunity.
sabres3277
I hope they give Manning the proper time to heal it’s not like it’s going to make a difference if they give extended rehab time. I am seeing the comments about Miggy and I agree he is totally out of shape and his bat speed is awful. But to say disrespectful things about this future HOF and ripping him for the last 6 six years of his contract is wrong. Miggy is a Tiger legend and he should be treated with respect. The Tigers knew when they signed him to the deal that the last few years of the contract will be rough on the teams ability to add talent with this albatross of a contract in the way. The Baez signing is worse than the Cabrera contract even at this point. Avila put this franchise in financial hell by signing a guy who has never been able to hit a slider, has no plate discipline and his fielding is poor at best and he is out of position. He should be a second baseman and on another team but he is not going to opt-out so we are stuck through next year. I am a die-hard Tiger fan but this team is so bad it’s hard to watch but I still do. .
REBB248
With this being Miguel Cabrera’s last year with Detroit. And, his huge salary coming off the Tigers’ books. That Chris Ilitch doesn’t use Javy Baez’ contract as an excuse not to open up the purse strings, going into next season?
REBB248
Great! Could this season get any worser for the Tigers?
SportsFan0000
Tigers have had the worst luck with injuries over the last few years.
SportsFan0000
Bad Break for the Tigers!
Joey Wentz has earned a spot in the Tigers rotation and that former Braves
draft pick should stay in the rotation and not go back to AAA.
Wentz was one of the best pitchers in the AFL league of MLB’s future stars.
2023 is a “lost season” for the Tigers anyways.
It is a season for New Pres of Baseball Ops and his Revamped Front Office and Scouting Team to evaluate the Tigers team and the farm system top to bottom.
Some young players will emerge as keepers.
Others will be traded or discarded as not in the Tigers future plans.
Give the Tigers at least 2-3 more “top ten” MLB player Drafts and international signings/drafts and they may be ready to contend.
Obviously, the Tigers must go heavy on hitters and position players for at least the next 3 drafts. Pitching is available in later rounds.
Cabrera is on his well deserved “Thank you” Tour.
Former Owner Mike Ilitch was rightfully criticized for overpaying veleran players and extending them with too long contracts.
Guys like “Big Papi” David Ortiz were extended on 2, 3, 4 year deals only.
Glad that Tigers have, finally, moved Cabrera further down the batting order which is long overdue.
