Red Sox outfielder Adam Duvall left his game after suffering an apparent wrist injury while making a diving play in center field, as noted by Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. As noted by Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, Duvall had x-rays done on his wrist, the same one on which he underwent season-ending surgery in 2022, following his exit from today’s game. No results have been announced regarding Duvall’s x-ray. Duvall signed with the club this past offseason on a one-year, $7MM guarantee.
Should Duvall miss significant time, Boston figures to rely on some combination of Raimel Tapia and Jarren Duran in center field, though the heavily left-handed Red Sox could also give Yu Chang additional starts at shortstop, allowing Enrique Hernandez to move from the infield back into center field, where he spent the majority of the past two seasons. Regardless of who ultimately replaces Duvall in the lineup, any missed time would be a real blow to Boston’s offense early in the season, as Duvall has raked to open the 2023 campaign. In his first 33 plate appearances this season, Duvall has slashed a whopping .483/.545/1.138 with four home runs, five doubles, and a triple while either scoring or knocking in 25 of the club’s 55 runs.
More injury updates…
- Starling Marte left today’s game against the Marlins after the first inning due to what the Mets described as a neck strain. Marte suffered the injury while stealing third base in the bottom of the first, as Marte’s slide took him headfirst into the knee of Miami third baseman Jean Segura. He remained in the game for the remainder of the inning, but Jeff McNeil moved from second base to take Marte’s spot in the right field for the top of the second. Manager Buck Showalter expressed optimism regarding Marte, telling reporters (including Laura Albanese of Newsday) “so far so good” as it pertains to Marte having avoided a concussion. Any missed time by Marte seems likely to benefit outfielder Tommy Pham in terms of playing time, though it’s also possible that the club could call up a player like Danny Mendick to take some starts if Marte requires a trip to the injured list.
- The Marlins had a pair of players leave today’s game as well, with Avisail Garcia exiting the game with what was termed “left hamstring soreness”, according to the Miami Herald’s Jordan McPherson, while J.T. Chargois exited with an apparent injury just three pitches into the seventh inning. Chargois, who the Marlins acquired from the Rays via trade back in November, has been a useful reliever in recent years, recording a 2.36 ERA with a 23.6% strikeout rate and 8% walk rate in 80 innings since the start of the 2021 season. Garcia, on the other hand, is entering the second season of a four-year deal he signed with the Marlins prior to the 2021 season that he has struggled to live up to to this point. Despite entering the contract as a career 104 wRC+ hitter coming off a strong 29-homer season in 2021 where he posted a wRC+ of 116, Garcia has slashed just .216/.259/.310 (62 wRC+) in his first 106 games as a Marlin, with a 28.9% strikeout rate above his career norms and just nine home runs.

I think we’ve been saying that about the Marlins for the past 5 years

People have been saying this for like 20 years.

@rct
Things can be worse. Some people have been saying the Mets are serious World Series championship contenders for 37 years.
Tigers3232
@rct, well the people saying it 20 years ago would have been right considering they won the World Series in 2003
bronxmac77
They did indeed. But I think the majority of that 2003 team was in other uniforms by the time they got their rings.

@Ace
In order to do that, this will need to be Kim Ng’s last season of sending the Marlins backwards from where they already were.

Everyone seems to be getting hurt. Too bad about Duvall. I always liked him as a player (even when he’s been helping kick my Tigers ass). Hope he’s back at it soon. He was having a hell of a start to the year.
richardc
When Duvall gets hot he can really carry a team on his back, but unfortunately his hot spells are all too often followed by droughts of him racking up a bunch of Ks..
Wishing him the best though, he was a great guy for the Braves, and was really hoping this was going to be his breakout year again…
He didn’t complain one single time when the Braves sent him down to AAA, kept his head up, and just kept battling. He ultimately helped the team to another division title, and it had to be super gratifying and rewarding for him.
Hope this injury isn’t serious..Wrist issues are a power hitters worst nightmare…
avenger65
I was so happy when Duvall signed with the Sox, but he has exceeded the high expectations I had for him. Hopefully his injury won’t be long term. By the way, why does MLBTR refer to Kike Hernandez as Enrique? I know his full name is Enrique but I’ve never heard of anyone calling him anything but Kike except MLBTR.
Fever Pitch Guy
avenger – Maybe something has changed since then, but whenever I used to post comments with his nickname it would get flagged as the slur word with the same spelling. So maybe that’s why it’s not used in articles?
deweybelongsinthehall
Exactly.

I’ve never heard of anyone calling him anything but

It’s progressiveness at its worst. Different words mean different things in different cultures. If it is used in a culturally appropriate manner, it should be okay.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Try MLB The Show or about a half dozen fantasy baseball sites. He hasn’t been called Kike since he left the Dodgers.
bronxmac77
True. Possibly due to being slang for an anti-Semitic slur. We live in ultra-sensitive times.
I’ve been flagged for using the word snaaaaatch… As in someone got snaaaaatched up! Go figure!
MafiaBass
It’s harder to differentiate his nickname from the anti-Semitic slur in print. I was pretty surprised that they would print it without some sort of accenting at first. On the west coast, though, since there are so many more Spanish speakers, they are less likely to see it and think about the slur. There is a far greater Jewish population in New England, and I’d imagine they’re a little more sensitive about it. I listen to the WEEI broadcasts, and they seem to announce him as Enrique, but refer to him as Kiké when talking about him.
RSmith
Use ‘Kiki instead, problem solved.
bronxmac77
I believe hall-of-famer Kiki Cuyler was called Kiki because he had a st-st-studdering problem. I bet he ki-ki-kicked some peoples’ ashes growing up.

richard – “No results” on x-rays is usually a bad sign, as in they found a fracture so they are planning further testing to confirm. If they had come back negative, they would likely have announced it by now. The way he immediately headed off the field was also an ominous sign.
Replacing Duvall with Chang in the lineup will be a massive reduction in offense. The only positive would be Hernandez moving off SS, where he has been brutal this season (5 errors already).
Cooperdooper7
How about sending Yu Chang down to the minors…. where he belongs. If Duval is heading for the DL… Bring up Duran replace Chang with either Hamilton, Dalbec or Valdez.
all in the suit that you wear
Dalbec will reportedly join the team in Tampa. No corresponding move yet.

kingken67
It could also be the x-rays were inconclusive. With the small bones of the wrist it’s sometimes hard to tell if there’s a break or not. Fiber imaging is usually required.
kingken67
Finer imaging. I hate typing on a phone sometimes.
GASoxFan
Dalbec is the smart choice over Duran and company. He can help spell casas who needs a breath and to slow things down a bit and get out of his slump. Add a RH bat, and, let’s you still have depth if you need to move Kike around to be a solid extra OF, if you wind up with no other choice.
Really someone who isn’t Kike at SS makes the team stronger, but, making that move this early admits the entire offseason plan of using him at SS was as bad of an idea as his history indicated it would be. And admitting failure isn’t a strong suit for this front office and coaching staff. So, they likely keep running him out there to try and settle in, hope for the best of mondesi/story ASAP.
But, that left left side of the field has been bad early on. Between yoshida’s defense showing early decision making issues, and, lack of arm/speed/range, and the IF not getting in place to give him NPB-styled cutoffs on his throws, added to the infield error machine, it’s already cost in the win column.

Garcia can stay injured the rest of the season. He only contributes negative value when he plays
MarlinsFanBase
Yes! Yes! Yes!
gbs42
Garcia signed his Marlins contract prior to the 2022 season, not 2021.
formerlyz
Never want to see guys get hurt, but was desperately hoping for someone else to get Avisail Garcia’s ABs, and this at least hopefully means that. The Marlins should regardless have a short leash on him trying to rebound, with so many guys that they could use in that spot, and the unlikelihood of him turning it around enough for someone to take his contract in a trade
MarlinsFanBase
Agreed. I prefer to see Sanchez and maybe Burdick taking those ABs. Even when Garcia gets back, to me de la Cruz and Jazz are playing everyday at the other two OF spots, and Garcia, at best, can platoon with Sanchez…assuming that Sanchez hasn’t taken the job by the time Garcia returns.
formerlyz
Several options both already on the roster, and in the upper minors. I’d even rather see Garrett Cooper out there in certain situations b/c I’d much rather have Gurriel at the plate in situations Garcia has been, like on Saturday multiple times.
I also dont think the Jazz in CF move is working, and since it isnt like they have an internal great defensive option on the current big league roster, I’d rather see him back at SS than out there, where I feel like he has already avoided 6 injuries…
Also even more salty about the Brian Anderson situation, especially while including signing Segura, and other stuff they did, most of which are almost elevated versions of Marlins type stuff they’ve done over the years, in terms of lacking in logic
MarlinsFanBase
I actually was wondering of a way to have Gurriel and Cooper there. My thought was putting Cooper at DH (and to avoid his eventual injury), and putting Soler in RF for the bulk of the time.
I agree with Jazz at SS. It’s brutal. He’s almost Junior Felix-esque out there. I’d prefer de la Cruz in CF as our internal option for this year.. I’d look at a starting group as follows:
C – Stallings/Fortes (until Fortes hits, I prefer Stallings defense in there more)
1B – Gurriel
2B – Arraez
SS – Jazz
3B – Segura
LF – Sanchez/Burdick/Encarnacion
CF – de la Cruz
RF – Soler
DH – Cooper
And yeah, this Brian Anderson thing is stinging, and it will sting if he stays healthy this year, puts up 20+ HRs, 70+ RBI and is once again a finalist for the GG that he’ll lose to Arenado. Hopefully in the offseason, Arraez is moved to 1B, Segura to 2B and a real 3B is brought in. Of course, if Ng is retained, we know that she’ll make some more stupid moves that she’ll wait until late January or early February to make when she sees that they’re weeks away from pitchers and catchers to report.
mlb fan
Avisail is a DOG; the analytics bozos who don’t really watch much MLB told us he was exceptional after his Milwaukee yrs.
Pangolin
Which specific analyst are you talking about? I don’t recall anyone being hyped on Garcia’s contract with the Marlins.
JoeBrady
Avi was always mediocre. From 2012-202, he averaged 1.6 bWAR/650 PAs. He had a 3.0 in his walk year, and Miami thought he had found the fountain of youth at the ripe old age of 31. He was always likely to revert to his baseline of 1.6.
Pangolin
My point exactly. I can’t imagine any “analytics bozos” singing Garcia’s praises – all the analytical numbers suggest the exact opposite.
MarlinsFanBase
Avi Garcia is starting to make me think that he’s one of those guys that used something to get a contract, and stopped using it after he got his guaranteed deal for four years. Every bit of it has the odor of that. He’s even thinned out a bit.
At this point, at best, he platoons with Sanchez…unless Sanchez wins the job outright. de la Cruz should not be out of the lineup.
JoeBrady
I’m always suspicious of that. That’s why I tend to disregard hitting stats from his walk year. If you’ve done nothing thru age 30, you are unlikely to be better from 31-34 than you were from 27-30.
MarlinsFanBase
For me, it isn’t that Garcia sucked. It’s the pattern of having decent years every couple of years, mainly in the second year of 2-year deals…then he gets this 4-year deal from the Marlins and looks like he may not be having a decent year until the fourth year of the contract because he is absolutely ineffective out there and has nothing that points to getting out of it. He’s dropped a great deal of torque off of bat contact.

What did Manfred do to the balls this year? With the rule changes it would be the perfect time to juice the ball and blame the offensive explosion on more steals and a pitch clock.
bronxmac77
Manfred is always playing around with his balls. The ghostrunner rule… Nothing says ‘my game is boring, let’s get it over with…’ like a softball rule.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
Duvall is injured so they call up… Bobby Dalbec. Does this team have any clue what they’re doing??
bronxmac77
Are you all Bloom and Gloom?
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
I expected nothing from this team to begin with. This is pretty much what I expected. I certainly didn’t expect Duvall to hit as well as he did
all in the suit that you wear
Mango: Who would you call up instead of Dalbec? Maybe Duran to play CF. Hernandez can also play CF. Maybe David Hamilton could play SS.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
Probably not Duran, I haven’t liked what I saw from him up to this point. Hamilton would probably be the move, Hernandez hasn’t exactly looked great at short. Which I seem to remember being the book on him when he was in LA
all in the suit that you wear
I doubt Hamilton is great defensively on the infield. Hopefully, he has improved, but I saw him make a horrible error at 2B last year in person.
GASoxFan
Pedro – the sox are going to be facing a lefty heavy dose of SP… as in I think the next week plus of starters project to be lefties.
Duran is a lefty bat, so, among his other questions he is best to sort at AAA, dalbec being a righty makes sense in the lineup.
Add to the fact that you may see a better alignment using some combo of dalbec/arroyo up the middle and slide Kike to CF for a bit. See how it takes. That would be the smart change, but, I suspect that isn’t what you get. Cora wants Kike to get SS reps and be comfortable there. So dalbec on the bench, Kike as your new 4th OF option, and Tapia on the field may be what you see. Work dalbec in to get casas a bit of a breather after his struggles.
The sox played 3 series against some of the worst of mlb. They’ve barely fought to break. 500, as expected overall except they should’ve cleaned up against the weak teams better if they think they are going anywhere this year.
Lots of movable parts, the roster is versatile, just not particularly talented with its versatility. What’s the old saying, Jack of all trades master of none? Well, we’ve got lots of guys who can play lots of spots around or slightly below league average in many of them.
Jimmy joe
Dalbec played some SS in spring training and has played it a couple of times for the Woo Sox so far. Like it or not I think he’s going to be playing some SS. I would have thought Hamilton would have been the logical pick. Anything at SS would be an improvement over Hernandez. Maybe Refsnyder and Tapia will platoon in CF with Hernandez rotating between CF and SS.
GASoxFan
Funny you imply how many errors Kike has so far at SS. Everyone thought I was all doom and gloom when I pointed out his history at the position which was far from favorable.
It’s only a week into the season, but, to channel a funny (nfl) coach quote (and beer commercial)…. “They are who we thought they were.”
All along throughout this offseason build the team mainly shopped in the scratch and dent section of free agency. You figured there would be a LOT of mixing, matching, call-ups, and IL time at most positions on the diamond. Amd it’s already shown true through ST and the early season, but not from some of the guys you expected.
We’re still not far into the season, but, this team sinks or swims based on health more than most – that is to say, while every team needs to stay healthy to be good, the red sox have more questionable health guys on their roster than most other clubs.
KD17
GA –
I thought they put Kiki next to Devers so Devers didn’t look so bad?
That’s not why? Heck, I was told they put Yoshida behind Devers for the same reason!!!
As long as the score keepers can justify 38 misplayed balls to Devers in 2022 as hits not errors, I don’t think it matters if Kiki or Yoshida catch anything. The score keeper will make sure the numbers look good.
Yep, 38 times last year Devers mishandled a hit. I personally think Kiki can top that.
It’s got to be great being a pitcher for the Red Sox. Especially a lefty who lives down and in on right handed batters!!
JoeBrady
Everyone thought I was all doom and gloom when I pointed out his history at the position which was far from favorable.
==============================
You are 100% negative on every RS move. It’s not like you tried to assess this from an objective perspective.
GASoxFan
Not true Joe.
I’m only negative on the BAD moves the front office makes, which, are in abundance.
When bloom makes a RARE move that looks objectively good, I say so. Same with when they are neutral and don’t matter.
RSmith
Dalbec cant be worse than Kiki, who looks terrible at SS. Kiki goes back to center, and Yu Chang takes over SS, with Dalbec being utility. Improves SS defense, improves CF defense, drops utility defense.
Oh, and a big hit to Offense with Duvall’s bat gone.
Right now is the time for one of the kids to find the baseball version of Jesus, and step up big.
Cooperdooper7
Yu Chang’s value to this team is as a defensive replacement only…. there is a reason why he played for 4 teams last year. Bring up Hamilton or Valdez
JoeBrady
Emmanuel Valdez? I like him well enough, but he doesn’t SS. If it is a minimum stay on the DL, Hamilton might be fun to watch, but likely overwhelmed.
JoeBrady
If the injury is minor, I’d bring up Duran. I hate the L/L with him and Tapia, but Duran’s K/W is much better this year. You can never tell when an injury morphs into an opportunity to see a late-developing prospect.
MarlinsFanBase
Is there a bad contract that the Marlins can trade Avi Garcia for?
GASoxFan
Garcia has 3 seasons left on his deal counting this one, and, including his $5m buyout on another year option on top of that. As much as you’d hope he can ‘turn it around’ not many teams can run a guy out there to try who has been 33% worse than league average, or, probably roughly replacement level player production since end of ’21.
So…
Maybe swap for Corbin from WAS, where the Nats kick in a little cash or a player to get out from under the deal? That’s one option.
Other teams that normally might come to mind are dead ends. Yes, the Yankees would love to move some of their aging dead money, but, can’t think of anything they’d do with Garcia.
Expected bad teams like Det and the As have pared down and don’t have a bad deal to send back. Pit and Bal are looking to climb back upwards, and Garcia would be a drag on what they’re trying to do.
KC doesn’t really have an incentive to like many other lower to mid pack teams. With the Bally shenanigans going on, ‘buying’ a prospect or two by absorbing the deal loses luster for many clubs you might argue had lower future obligations and otherwise might.
lloyd_christmas
A Hicks for Garcia to change the scenery? Hicks has ‘no idea’ why he’s not starting in the outfield…
JoeBrady
No, you’re doomed. You’re generally better off hoping he can revert. I’ve seen some teams trade for contracts that wind up being even worse and the cycle perpetuates itself.
MarlinsFanBase
I pretty much see that it may be the hope for him to get back on track, but I don’t see it. He is absolutely not making adjustments now for the entire time in Miami, often seeming surprised that pitchers are throwing the same pitches over and over that he can’t hit. When he hits the balls, there is very little generation of explosion and torque. He literally looks like a guy that does not belong in MLB except if he uses a PED to generate enough power that helps him get away with grazing the many pitches that he doesn’t barrel up.
AL34
I do not like Bloom but the Duvall pickup was a good one. I hope his season is not ruined with an injury. He looked like a very good fit
