The Tigers today announced a number of injury updates on some of the minor league players, with Evan Woodbery of MLive.com among those to relay the info (Twitter links). Per the release, right-hander Jackson Jobe has lumbar spine inflammation and will be sidelined for three-to-six months. Meanwhile, catcher Dillon Dingler received a meniscectomy on his right knee and will be in rehab for the next four weeks before starting a return to play progression.
Jobe, 20, was the club’s first round pick in 2021, getting selected third overall that year. He spent last year between Class-A and Class-A Advanced, posting a 3.84 ERA in 77 1/3 innings. Based on his draft pedigree and strong professional debut, he is currently considered the club’s top prospect by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline.
Jobe wasn’t going to be a factor for the Tigers here in 2023, as he still has yet to reach Double-A and only made three starts at Class-A Advanced last year. However, it’s surely not ideal for him to miss most or perhaps all of a year that would have otherwise been spent developing his skills. It’s also notable as it continues an incredibly frustrating run of poor health for the club’s top young pitchers. One year ago, the Tigers were set to head into the season with a rotation headlined by homegrown starters like Matt Manning, Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal, with Jobe headlining the next wave. Instead, Mize made just two starts last year before requiring Tommy John surgery, Skubal went under the knife for flexor tendon surgery and was recently placed on the 60-day injured list, while Manning was held back by various ailments and only made 12 starts last year.
Dingler, 24, was a second round pick of the Tigers in 2020 and has been generally considered to be one of the club’s top 10 prospects in the years since, with his defense earning especially high praise. Last year, he played 107 games at Double-A, hitting 14 home runs in that time. He struck out in 31.9% of his plate appearances but also drew walks at a 10% clip. His .238/.333/.419 batting line amounted to a 107 wRC+, indicating he was 7% better than the league average hitter.
Dingler went to the Arizona Fall League at the end of last year but was shut down after four games due to knee soreness. He’ll now have to miss the next four weeks before he can even start to ramp up towards returning to action. His prospect stock isn’t considered quite as high as Jobe’s but it’s still another blow to the club’s farm. He still hasn’t reached Triple-A and was looking up a catching corps of Eric Haase, Jake Rogers and Donny Sands. He might not have factored into the 2023 plans but he is Rule 5 eligible this coming winter and will miss some crucial time between now and then.
Since neither of these two players were likely to make an immediate jump to the big leagues this season, today’s news isn’t going to have a huge impact the near-term fortunes of the club. However, the Tigers aren’t expected to compete this season after a 66-96 campaign last year. Given that they are future-focused at the moment, these two injuries bring some more frustration to a franchise that has had much of it lately.

Quick, Avila defenders, TO THE COMMENTS!

There are less Avila Defenders than there are Madoff Defenders.
There were more Trevor Bauer Defenders from the jump than Avila Defenders,
There are more Covid Defenders than Avila Defenders.
All with good cause shown.

Maybe all our injuries will happen in the minor leagues this year instead of the majors. Ugghhh.

Wonder how Marcelo Mayer is doing? Wish Tiger’s had somebody like him.
dsett75
He’s doing well for Boston from what I’ve heard. I wanted him too because we hadn’t any good hitting prospects at the time. Except for Torkelson and Greene, but Tork is looking like a bust unless he takes a major step forward this season.

If your last name is Dingler, why would you name your son Dillon? Sounds like Goober’s assistant at the fillin’ station in Mayberry.

At least he doesn’t have a hyphenated name… like Dingler-Barry.

Shoulda named him Dirk.
tigerdoc616
Give it a rest. As much as I wanted Mayer, that ship has sailed. He hasn’t made the majors yet either and he could blow his knee out tomorrow and be done as well.
amk1920
He hasn’t made the majors because he was in high school less than 2 years ago lmao
dsett75
Mayer’s doing really well though. I can’t believe that Torkelson is starting to look like a bust. He better take a major step forward this season.
BigB96
It’s wild to think that Detroit could be in a different spot if they sold Fulmer at peak value, kept Verlander, and didn’t bid against themselves for Miggy.
Not that the team would be amazing, but it could have at least battled in the central for a couple of seasons.
In regards to Mize’s injury, I can’t think of a starting pitcher with a splitter that hasn’t had arm troubles. Hopefully, Trumbull and Boyd comeback strong and Skulbal returns, otherwise this team is going to lose 100 games again
stymeedone
What was Fulmer’s peak value? What amazing offer did they supposedly decline? Verlander would have played out his option, and they would have got a 2nd round pick. Miggy would have earned his milestones elsewhere. His contract was never a factor in their spending. Doesn’t appear it would be much different, but they wouldn’t have Rogers, and they would have one more Dingler type prospect in the system.
BigB96
Fulmer’ speak value was around the same time Archer had been traded to Pit. Assuming one of Meadows, Glasnow, or Baz could have been had, it would have been a good deal.
If JV stays, Tigers don’t need to draft as many pitchers hoping to find his replacement. A couple of bats and the team is in a lot better shape.
I’d have to disagree with Miggy. The Tigers extended him over a year before free agency. No Team was going to give him 200 million. Could have retained him on less years and slightly less AAV.
Overall, Detroit could have saved itself a lot of problems by not overthinking it.
Jubilation
Miggy got his deal 2 yrs before FA
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Don’t forget the signing was also a way to grab headlines and announce the Tigers were in it to win it.
There is the promotional aspect to that kind of signing.
BigB96
The Tigers didn’t need Miggy. At the time of the extension they had JV.
We have to stop giving the Tigers credit. This is a team that had Miggy playing 3B and Prince Fielder playing first – they make bad moves all the time. The Tigers were straight up embarrassing to watch against the Giants in the World Series that year.
Tigers fans would have backed a team without Miggy. No other franchise was signing a 1B/DH over 30 to a 150 million dollar deal
stymeedone
Pittsburgh did not make that offer to Detroit. Please list all the rookie of the year pitchers who were immediately traded. Yes, he got injured. Its called the breaks. Verlander only had 1.5 years on his contract when he was traded. He was not going to stay with Detroit thru a rebuild, and Detroit was not going to pay him during a rebuild, so they would have still been drafting pitching. Miggy got paid by Mr I, evidently more than you liked. His contract did not limit the Tigers moves in any way, After 10 years of competing, a rebuild was imminent. The farm needed to be improved and Avila got it to #3, before the majority graduated last year. If they did it wrong, it sure fooled all the experts.
placido my polanco
Miggy was essential and every tigers fan wanted him to stay. But if they hadn’t jumped the gun, they could have kept him around at a much more reasonable rate. He got the extension after winning back to back MVPs. His value was sky-high, the contract didn’t expire for two more years, and he played the last 2 months of 2013 with a bad leg. Red flags everywhere but they signed him anyway. Rats
Motor City Beach Bum
I’m pretty sure I read once upon a time that Alex Bregman was in play in a deal for Fulmer. Hindsight being 20-20 we sure should have jumped at that deal. That prospect deal would have worked out as opposed to the one we made for Verlander. Trading for prospects is always a dicey option.
GarryHarris
According to second hand information, Tigers scouts say that the offers for Michael Fullmer and Matt Boyd were underwhelming. Did you trust Al Avila to bring value in a trade?
Motor City Beach Bum
His trade record and free agent signings were spotty at best. Trade rumors are just that until they become reality but I remember reading the one on Bregman. Baez was the other one discussed at the time (back in his younger days when he was in Chicago). Al had few good trades…Candelario from Chicago, Olson from Milwaukee.
dsett75
Olson hasn’t done jack yet. As a matter of fact, I think he’s hurt already and hasn’t even pitched yet this spring.
Motor City Beach Bum
Ummhhh Olson was ranked the number 87 prospect in baseball by Kiley McDaniel I believe and getting him for Daniel Norris, hurt or not, was a steal.
dsett75
Motor City…..If you were talking to me, I knew he was ranked in the top 100 on one of the lists. I hope Olson turns out to be great, but we shall see.
DarkSide830
The Tigers should have been willing to Move Boyd years ago for whatever was offered. It was very clear at tbe time he was due to regress. Paul Blackman, Caleb Smith, etc.
JoeBrady
To me, it was a either a complete lack of recognition of where they were, or maybe the owner was too old for a rebuild. In 2018, they were in the middle of their second straight 64-win season. The only talent they had were Castellanos, Boyd & Fulmer.
Had they tanked, their 47-win team in 2019 might’ve been a bit more tolerable.
BigB96
Detroit has another 3-5 years before being competitive again. Had they moved pieces in 2017 and earlier in a way that the Rays and Cards do, they wouldn’t lose 60% of their games in the easiest division in baseball.
This may be the benchmark for worst ran team over the course of the last 10 years. Tons of whiffs on trades, prospects not developing, injuries, bad extensions and free agent deals, etc. The team could have been competitive with a few tweaks, but it seems like everything is going wrong.
dsett75
Hopefully, E-Rod will pitch well and we’ll get a good haul for him. I doubt this, but it’d be nice if Baez could have a good year and we can get a major league ready prospect. We won’t get more than that because if Baez does have a good season, he’ll opt out. So, nobody will give alot for what they think will be a rental.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Holy Toledo! They could not have only had a V8,but they also could have hired…..
The Superfife!
SportsFan0000
No! The Tigers made the right move by keeping Boyd who was an innings eating quality top of the rotation starter and popular with the fans.
Taking a lowball offer for Boyd would have been much worse.
GarryHarris
No matter who the Tigers get in trade or who they draft, they simply don’t develop players. The focus is on the highest draft choices who are not always the best players. Look at the last Championship. The core was developed from within. History shows that the best players come from later rounds:
First rounders: 1974 Lance Parrish, 1975 Dave Brookens, 1976 Ph 2 Steve Kemp, 1976 Pat Underwood, 1978 Kirk Gibson, 1979 P2 Howard Johnson, 1979 Rick Leach, 1980 Glenn Wilson,…
1972 R4 Dan Meyer
1972 R10 Dave Roberts
1972 R17 Vern Ruhle
1974 R10 Mark Fidrych
1975 Ph2 R4 Dave Rozema
1975 R4 Jason Thompson
1975 R5 Lou Whitaker
1976 R2 Alan Trammel
1976 R4 Dan Petry
1976 R5 Jack Morris
1977 R7 Rick Peters
.
It doesn’t matter much after this because Sparky Anderson had pets and generally didn’t give young players real chances. The only players on note were Mike Henneman 1984 R4 and Travis Fryman 1987 R1 developed under Sparky. Tony Clark 1990 R1 and Bobby Higginson 1992 R12 came up when Sparky Managed his last season and already “checked out”. To make matters worse, Tom Monaghan turned out to be a “Slum Lord”.
.
1985 R22 John Smoltz
My point is that a good MiLB system is necessary first before anything else.. Currently it is broken and free agency is a waste of time without a core.
Motor City Beach Bum
You had me at Kirk Gibson…we should just clone him. You are right that you can’t overrely on your early round draft picks to develop into the studs that will carry you and need to find gems in the later rounds. Tarik Skubal is our best example currently, Beau Brueske would be another one. That 84 roster was awesome.
dsett75
Harris….And then in our last good run, we made some excellent trades and pickups, but home grown Verlander and Zumaya were huge for us.

SportsFan0000
I was on shortstops Marcelo Mayer and/or Jordan Lawler who are both hitting and defending quite well in the minor leagues instead of Jobe in the draft.
The Tigers have had one of the worst runs of player and prospect injuries that I have seen with an MLB organization in on a long time.
Everyone needs pitching.
But, the young pitching has been very injury prone in recent years and has been a big gamble. that has not, so far, payed off for the Tigers and cost the last GM his job.
Draft a little more like the Baltimore Orioles have drafted and the Tigers will be very competitive in 2-3 years in the AL Central.
Mark Fichtel
Correct. For a team that had less than zero hitting in the minors, Mayer and Lawlar were no-brainer picks. I, too, have been saying that since before the draft …. And have been mad at the Tigers for drafting Jobe since that draft night. Brandon, nobody could see this injury coming, the point remains Avila was a terrible GM
stymeedone
Tigers just did the opposite of Baltimore. They went with pitching first, and then drafted hitting. Baltimore currently has all hitting and the pitching will hopefully follow. If you put the Tigers pitching with the Baltimore position players, that would be something!
brodie-bruce
imo if your picking that high in the draft you grab the best hitter you can, you grab pitchers lower in the draft. then again that’s just my opinion just seems like all the good hitters are gone within the top 10.
stymeedone
See Mike Trout.
brodie-bruce
@stymeedone not saying you can’t find hitters later in the draft cards got al real late in the draft. then again the mlb draft is a real crapshoot and takes about 2-4 years to see if the pick was worth it.
SportsFan0000
Baltimore did a more balanced approached.
Mike Elias was successful with the Cardinals and Astros
Elias spread out his resources and, at times passed on players expecting to get maximum value so that he could fit many more multiples of players into his draft pool money pot.
Elias would “fall back”, take players he really liked that were not the top of the board, save money by not paying “full tilt” on top of the board guys
and then work out deals with equally talented players, in multiples, further down the draft board.
That is what I meant by drafting smarter like the Orioles.
Ditto with the International bonus pool money…
spread it around on more players, hedge your bets etc..
not every player makes it,
It is a numbers game etc..
GarryHarris
The Cards have a great development system and the Os revamped theirs. The Tigers only hope that their first rounder makes it. Subsequent draft picks appear to be ignored.
amk1920
Yeah, can’t draft a top 10 prospect in baseball cause you have to hand Javy Baez a terrible contract
SportsFan0000
Dumb strategy.
Baez is a better player when surrounded with top quality hitters and players.
Baez cannot carry a team on his back as we have seen.
amk1920
This isn’t the NFL. You draft the best player available period. Nobody compares their impending draft picks to free agent signings
SportsFan0000
The smart GMs and teams spread their bonus pool around and try to get a higher volume of players and not to spend it all on 1 guy in some years.
Read Mayer did not want to play for Tigers.
Lawler is just as good SS who can hit with power.
Lawler should have been the pick.

Detroit is a major work in process, I feel bad for the young fans because there will probably be high turn over the next few years. That said it’s probably a great time to be in that position. There is no real rush, the central division is the worst, and no one is trying to buy a title here. As a fan I’m sure we all have our question’s. Is Tork a bust ? There is no one pushing him down on the farm so we’ll wait to see what the summer draft brings in. If its the best, and biggest college first baseman that will give us our answer. .
I like Hasse, and Rogers. Tiger’s have control over both for 4 years, and both are in their prime years. Will this be the last season Austin Meadows plays here ? His younger brother is bigger, and seems more exciting to watch. We all hope Austin can return to who he was in Tampa, but at 4 million if n0t he’ll be gone. Trading Baez, and E rod may be as high on the list as anything too. At a million point 2 a month, how long is Schoop around ? He’s lost so much weight I did not recognize him his first at bat this spring. Will good shape mean good results ?
There is a lot of work to be done in Detroit, and it’s going to take time. The quick games may be God sent. Sure it’s like watching videos of Babe Ruth playing, but there is a lot to said for being the quick an the dead.
Motor City Beach Bum
I have no idea why you even watch the Tigers. You are negative about everyone…you hate Hinh, you hate Harris, you hate Fetter. What is wrong with you??? Fetter rocks and I’m not sure what Hinch did other than his team overachieved his first year then suffered injuries to most of their pitching staff and had a bad year in his second.
SportsFan0000
No. One of the major problems was Avila telling the press everything and hurting his own ability to make trades and sign free agents.
And, smart GMs don’t say “the rebuild is over” when they have swiss cheese holes on the team and farm everywhere.
A team that was terrible and tanking should have been focused on building through the draft and international signings etc and not saying “the rebuild is over” so let’s over pay for a handful of veterans starting their decline cycle.
Signing Baez was a huge mistake. That money could have been used more productively on draft picks and international signings.
Saying you are going to sign a big free agent SS and pay him a lot of money was foolish!
Draft Lawler or Mayer and then you have your future SS in a few years promoted from the minors cost controlled for 6 years.
stymeedone
@sportsfan
Draft picks and international signings have spending limits designated by MLB. The Tigers used their full amount. Obviously, you did not know this. The money they spend to sign MLB free agents cannot be used in those areas. While I agree with you on Baez, SS was the one position that they did not have ready or near ready in the pipeline. They gave Correa his highest offer, but refused to bid against themselves. I give them credit for that.
SportsFan0000
I am aware of that!. But, before the rules were changed by MLB on International signings, The Tigers still did not make a major investment in International signings like other teams.
Even after the MLB rule changes, teams like the Astros, Dodgers, Padres, Yankees and more were still finding bushel loads of players on the International market. Some of the recently signed studs in the Astros rotation, bullpen etc. signed for relatively low bonus money(3 -4 young stars in the Astros World Series Championship rotation were very low bonus baby players.
It comes down to scouting, decision-making, player development etc.
The Padres just signed an international 5 tool catcher who is just 16 years old
and has already started a Spring Training game for the big league club and his future is so bright he will need to wear maximum polaroids.
So even with rules changes, the smart MLB teams are piling up with International prospects.
WestVillageTiger
Remember one of the lessons from Moneyball: Never burn your first round pick on a high school pitcher.
detigs6884
Colavita, I have to agree with MCBB. Why do you watch the Tigers? You seem to have nothing good to say and you feel you have all the answers. Do you work in a MLB position that makes you an expert? Or is you baseball knowledge based on hindsight, box scores and ESPN highlights? If you were paying attention Scott Harris has addressed many of the issues regarding the health and conditioning of the players to combat the injuries. His on field signings and trades reflect the direction the Tigers are moving in. One big name star is not enough at this point to put them in contention and stay there. Fetter is doing a great job with the pitchers in my opinion. As far as Hinch goes quit living in the past. If he was the cheater you say he is wouldn’t the Tigers have a winning team?
burrwick
NEVER draft a high school pitcher that high. Ugh.

Does Jobe perform the Tigers’ TJS in-house?
gotigers68
The Tigers are cursed.

Never draft a pitcher in the first round, except what about that Verlander guy?
SportsFan0000
Verlander was exceptional. That was a Dave Dombrowski draft.
It went downhill all the way after Dave Dombrowski left Detroit.
REBB248
The ghost of Al Avila continues to cast an ominous shadow over the Tigers’ organization! When have you ever seen a team have to rebuild a rebuild? In 2021, with Mize, Manning and Faedo on the horizon for the Tigers’ pitching staff. And, the consensus No. 1 overall prospect in that Draft, Marcelo Mayer drops into the Tigers lap at No. 3. And a player at a position (SS) bare of talent within the Tigers’ system. Avila passes on Mayer to take Jobe, a HS RHP? IMO, it was all about the money. Chris Ilitch didn’t want to give Mayer a $10MM signing bonus? Get ready for those 110 losses this season.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Well, it’s obvious, Al was a nice guy….but it was the Dom who started own downfall by lowballing Max.
Al had bad luck and was poor. Here we are…everybody giving the new guy a free pass….another excuse to not invest.
SportsFan0000
No! It was Mike Illitch’s fault. Dombrowski wanted to start a retooling or rebuild years earlier. The Tigers would be like the Astros know if they had kept Dombrowski and let him rebuild the team.
Scherzer’s agent is Boros. Boros wants most of his clients to go on the auction market with all teams to get maximum money.
Mike Ilitch should have let Dombrowski trade Scherzer for a Soto like trade return and they Tigers would have infused the team with young, great talent and not gone in the toilet like they did after Dave left.
Who would you prefer to rebuild/retool your team?!
Dombrowski or Avila?!
No contest. Dave D.
Motor City Beach Bum
HE HASNT EVEN BEEN HERE A YEAR!!!!Avila was here how long??? Maybe you should give the guy a chance. If he doesn’t get the job done I’ll join you in calling for his head but not when he’s only been here a few months. The Giants won 107 games doing things the way he is doing it.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Who is calling for anyone’s head?
What I have said or implied is that baseball has gone from a sport,a business run as secondary business by rich guys, who were ok with just not losing thier shirts, who ran the teams with a sense of cutltural pride, a cultural service…to full on screwing the American public, maximizing profits, hiring Ivy Leaguers to do so. Baseball is no longer for the working class or even a cultural service. (at least they kept up.the fasade)
They have realized, my generation was raised on baseball, apple pie and mom. We are obligated, brainwashed, to support baseball or we will feel UnAmerican like a GD commie.
They are taking advantage. I like Harris, I liked Al. When Mr. I left the building, I was very saddened. I understood things needed to settle financially. That was not Chris’s fault. That was not Al’s fault. And what is going on is not Harris’s fault.
I am not in league with the Red queen but soon Maximus will enter the arena and shout out to the world, “Are you not entertained?”

We are comparing Dombrowski with Avila.
No one on here is criticizing New Tigers Pres of Baseball OPs Scott Harris.
Scott Harris is doing what needed to be done at the tail end of Mike Illitch’s Tigers ownership reign whether it be with Dave Dombrowski or Scott Harris
or some one else not named Avila.
REBB248
Mike Ilitch got pi$$ed off when Scherzer spurned the Tigers lowball offer. So, he took that $140MM and gave raises to Cabrera and JV.
SportsFan0000
It was not a l;owball offer” at the time for Scherzer/
And, Scherzer’s agent was Boras.
Boras wants his clients to do free agent bidding wars/
After all the Boras clients that Mike Illitch signed and payed “over market” for ,
Mike Ilitch felt betrayed when Boros was ready to walk out the door
with Scherzer to the free agent auction./
Mike Illitch’s biggest mistake was he did not allow Dave Dombrowski to trade Scherzer after Scherzer and his agent rejected Illitch’s final offer.
Tigers could had landed a huge Soto like return of 5-6 top young players and prospects for a #1 All Star, Cy Young Starter like Scherzer in his prime.
Mike Illitch would not let Dave Dombrowski make that deal.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
That may be but no doubt it was a lowball offer. Max won the S.O. AL regular season leader. Was it like $11M? Remember despite any advice, the decision is the players. Looks like he got good advice, but I still think topping or equaling V’s salary and a really good sales pitch could have gotten it done. The fact that he wasn’t traded means to me, he was valued as contributing to a possible WS winner. I never thought I would.ever be interested in watching a Mets game after Seaver…..but I am. Funny because I kinda root for the Yankees when in NYC.
SportsFan0000
The Tigers did not “lowball” Scherzer and agent Boros. At the time, they made a very competitive offer.
Boros wanted an auction for Scherzer.
Surprisingly, the demand was not there for a big auction.
The Tigers offered 6 years at $24 million per year =144M which Scherzer and his agent Boras rejected.
The market for Max was nowhere near as strong as you’d think so he settled for the his “7 yr $210 million” contact with the Nats that is actually a 14 yr $15 million per year contract with 7 yrs deferred. Apr 6, 2020. With the Tigers entering a rebuild cycle with an aging, faltering team, there was no way Scherzer was staying in Detroit in any case.
As soon as Scherzer/Boras turned down the deal, Mike Illitch blew it by not letting Dave Dombrowski trade Scherzer in a 5 or 6 top young players and prospects for 1 Scherzer (Soto like deal).
A Soto like deal and the Tigers rebuild/retool could have happened without them falling out of contention.
REBB248
I’m sure Scherzer probably felt like the proverbial red-headed step-child with the Tigers. In his first year, he got demoted to AAA. The year after winning the AL-Cy Young, Max was disrespected by not getting the Opening Day nod. And, finally the lowball offer. Max is an alpha male. And, he was never ok with playing second fiddle to Verlander. So, the lowball offer from the Tigers was the last straw for Max.
SportsFan0000
The Tigers “made Scherzer” the pitcher he is today.
In the 4-5 years prior to Scherzer’s Cy Young with Detroit,
Scherzer had an average ERA of 3.80.
And, if anything, Mike Illitch was known for over paying veteran players.
Mike Illtch did not “low ball” players he wanted to sign on long term deals.
The Tigers offer would have made Scherzer, at the time, one of the 6 highest paid pitchers in MLB.
Scherzer and his agent Boras wanted to test the market and had no intention of accepting the Tigers and Mike Illitch’s very generous offer.
Motor City Beach Bum
